Explicit uniform bounds for Brauer groups of singular K3 surfaces

Let $k$ be a number field. We give an explicit bound, depending only on $[k:\mathbf{Q}]$ and the discriminant of the Néron--Severi lattice, on the size of the Brauer group of a K3 surface $X/k$ that is geometrically isomorphic to the Kummer surface attached to a product of isogenous CM elliptic curves. As an application, we show that the Brauer--Manin set for such a variety is effectively computable. Conditional on GRH, we can also make the explicit bound depend only on $[k:\mathbf{Q}]$ and remove the condition that the elliptic curves be isogenous. In addition, we show how to obtain a bound, depending only on $[k:\mathbf{Q}]$, on the number of $\mathbf{C}$-isomorphism classes of singular K3 surfaces defined over $k$, thus proving an effective version of the strong Shafarevich conjecture for singular K3 surfaces.

Explicit methods for the Hasse norm principle and applications to $A_n$ and $S_n$ extensions

Let $K/k$ be an extension of number fields. We describe theoretical results and computational methods for calculating the obstruction to the Hasse norm principle for $K/k$ and the defect of weak approximation for the norm one torus $R^1_{K/k} \mathbb{G}_m$. We apply our techniques to give explicit and computable formulae for the obstruction to the Hasse norm principle and the defect of weak approximation when the normal closure of $K/k$ has symmetric or alternating Galois group.

A bound on the primes of bad reduction for CM curves of genus 3

We give bounds on the primes of geometric bad reduction for curves of genus three of primitive CM type in terms of the CM orders. In the case of genus one, there are no primes of geometric bad reduction because CM elliptic curves are CM abelian varieties, which have potential good reduction everywhere. However, for genus at least two, the curve can have bad reduction at a prime although the Jacobian has good reduction. Goren and Lauter gave the first bound in the case of genus two. In the cases of hyperelliptic and Picard curves, our results imply bounds on primes appearing in the denominators of invariants and class polynomials, which are important for algorithmic construction of curves with given characteristic polynomials over finite fields.

Shadow lines in the arithmetic of elliptic curves

Let E/Q be an elliptic curve and p a rational prime of good ordinary reduction. For every imaginary quadratic field K/Q satisfying the Heegner hypothesis for E we have a corresponding line in E(K)\otimes Q_p, known as a shadow line. When E/Q has analytic rank 2 and E/K has analytic rank 3, shadow lines are expected to lie in E(Q)\otimes Q_p. If, in addition, p splits in K/Q, then shadow lines can be determined using the anticyclotomic p-adic height pairing. We develop an algorithm to compute anticyclotomic p-adic heights which we then use to provide an algorithm to compute shadow lines. We conclude by illustrating these algorithms in a collection of examples.

Bad reduction of genus $3$ curves with complex multiplication

Let $C$ be a smooth, absolutely irreducible genus-$3$ curve over a number field $M$. Suppose that the Jacobian of $C$ has complex multiplication by a sextic CM-field $K$. Suppose further that $K$ contains no imaginary quadratic subfield. We give a bound on the primes $\mathfrak{p}$ of $M$ such that the stable reduction of $C$ at $\mathfrak{p}$ contains three irreducible components of genus $1$.

Computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 3-Selmer group of an elliptic curve

We extend the method of Cassels for computing the Cassels-Tate pairing on the 2-Selmer group of an elliptic curve, to the case of 3-Selmer groups. This requires significant modifications to both the local and global parts of the calculation. Our method is practical in sufficiently small examples, and can be used to improve the upper bound for the rank of an elliptic curve obtained by 3-descent.
