Dual Description of Gauge Theories from an Iterative Noether Approach

An iterative Noether scheme, advocated by Deser, is used to introduce gauge invariant couplings to nonrelativistic matter with global symmetries related to usual charge conservation and dipole conservation recently discussed in fractonic theories. No reference to any gauge principle, fractonic or otherwise, is required. A dual description is found where the theory is defined either in terms of the usual vector gauge field or, alternatively, in terms of higher derivatives of a symmetric tensor field. A connection between these two descriptions is obtained by providing an explicit map between the vector and tensor fields. This method yields a novel `minimal' prescription for the tensor fields which is identified with the usual minimal prescription for the vector fields by using the mapping. It also spells out the structure of the pure gauge field action in both formulations. Extension of the abelian $U(1)$ invariance to the nonabelian $SU(N)$ invariance is done for the standard formulation.

A new approach for nonrelativistic bosonic string in flat space time

A new approach to the study of nonrelativistic bosonic string in flat space time is introduced, basing on a holistic hamiltonian analysis of the minimal action for the string. This leads to a structurally new form of the action which is, however, equivalent to the known results since, under appropriate limits, it interpolates between the minimal action (Nambu Goto type) where the string metric is taken to be that induced by the embedding and the Polyakov type of action where the world sheet metric components are independent fields. The equivalence among different actions is established by a detailed study of symmetries using constraint analysis. Various vexing issues in the existing literature are clarified. The interpolating action mooted here is shown to reveal the geometry of the string and may be useful in analyzing nonrelativistic string coupled with curved background.

Hamiltonian Formulation of Higher Rank Symmetric Gauge Theories

Recent discussions of higher rank symmetric (fractonic) gauge theories have revealed the important role of Gauss constraints. This has prompted the present study where a detailed hamiltonian analysis of such theories is presented. Besides a general treatment, the traceless scalar charge theory is considered in details. A new form for the action is given which, in 2+1 dimensions, yields area preserving diffeomorphisms. Investigation of global symmetries reveals that this diffeomorphism invariance induces a noncommuting charge algebra that gets exactly mapped to the algebra of coordinates in the lowest Landau level problem. Connections of this charge algebra to noncommutative fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics are shown.

Canonical Formulation of a New Action for a Non-relativistic Particle Coupled to Gravity

A detailed canonical treatment of a new action for a nonrelativistic particle coupled to background gravity, recently given by us, is performed both in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations. The equation of motion is shown to satisfy the geodesic equation in the Newton-Cartan background, thereby clearing certain confusions. The Hamiltonian analysis is done in the gauge independent as well as gauge fixed approaches, following Dirac's analysis of constraints. The physical (canonical) variables are identified and the path to canonical quantisation is outlined by explicitly deriving the Schroedinger equation.

Demystification of Non-relativistic Theories in Curved Background

We discuss a new formalism for constructing a non-relativistic (NR) theory in curved background. Named as galilean gauge theory, it is based on gauging the global galilean symmetry. It provides a systematic algorithm for obtaining the covariant curved space time generalisation of any NR theory defined in flat space time. The resulting background is just the Newton- Cartan manifold. The example of NR free particle is explicitly demonstrated.

Fluctuation-Dissipation relation from anomalous stress tensor and Hawking effect

We show a direct connection between Kubo's fluctuation-dissipation relation and Hawking effect that is valid in any dimensions for any stationary or static black hole. The relevant correlators corresponding to the fluctuating part of the force, computed from the known expressions for the anomalous stress tensor related to gravitational anomalies, are shown to satisfy the Kubo relation, from which the temperature of a black hole as seen by an observer at an arbitrary distance is abstracted. This reproduces the Tolman temperature and hence the Hawking temperature as that measured by an observer at infinity.

Non-relativistic Reduction of Spinors, New Currents and their Algebra

A specific mapping is introduced to reduce the Dirac action to the non-relativistic (Pauli - Schrödinger) action for spinors. Using this mapping, the structures of the vector and axial vector currents in the non-relativistic theory are obtained. The implications of the relativistic Ward identities in the non-relativistic limit are discussed. A new non-abelian type of current in the Pauli - Schrödinger theory is obtained. As we show, this is essential for the closure of the algebra among the usual currents. The role of parity in the non-relativistic theory is also discussed.

Meissner effect in holographic superconductors with Dirac-Born-Infeld electrodynamics

In this paper, we have investigated the Meissner effect of holographic superconductors in the presence of Dirac-Born-Infeld electrodynamics. The matching method is applied to obtain the critical magnetic field and the critical temperature. The critical magnetic field obtained from this investigation shows the effects of the DBI parameter $b$ and differs from that obtained from Born electrodynamics because of the extra $\vec{E}.\vec{B}$ term in the Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. It is observed that the critical magnetic field increases in Dirac-Born-Infeld theory compared to that in the Born theory.

Canonical formulation for nonrelativistic Euler fluids and Schwinger type conditions

We present a new approach, based on Noether's energy-momentum tensor, to construct the lagrangian for nonrelativistic nonisentropic Euler fluids. An advantage of this approach is that it naturally provides a generalised Clebsh decomposition for the fluid velocity. This is used to develop a hamiltonian formulation inolving a noncanonical algebra. This algebra is very simply obtained from the symplectic structure. It is used to show that the components of the Noether's energy-momentum tensor satisfy certain Schwinger-type relations. These relations, which are reminiscent of corresponding relations in relativistic field theory, are new.

New approach to nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariance and its applications

A comprehensive account of a new structured algorithm for obtaining nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariances in both space and spacetime by gauging the Galilean symmetry in a generic nonrelativistic field theoretical model is provided. Various applications like the obtention of nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariance, the introduction of Chern-Simons term and its role in fractional quantum Hall effect, induction of diffeomorphism in irrotational fluid model, abstraction of Newton-Cartan geometry and the emergence of Horava-Lifshitz gravity are discussed in details.

New approach to nonrelativistic ideal magnetohydrodynamics

We provide a novel action principle for nonrelativistic ideal magnetohydrodynamics in the Eulerian scheme exploiting a Clebsch-type parametrisation. Both Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations have been considered. Within the Hamiltonian framework, two complementary approaches have been discussed using Dirac's constraint analysis. In one case the Hamiltonian is canonical involving only physical variables but the brackets have a noncanonical structure, while the other retains the canonical structure of brackets by enlarging the phase space. The special case of incompressible magnetohydrodynamics is also considered where, again, both the approaches are discussed in the Hamiltonian framework. The conservation of the stress tensor reveals interesting aspects of the theory.

Torsional Newton-Cartan geometry from Galilean gauge theory

Using the recently advanced Galilean gauge theory (GGT) we give a comprehensive construction of torsional Newton Cartan geometry. The coupling of a Galilean symmetric model with background NC geometry following GGT is illustrated by a free nonrelativistic scalar field theory. The issue of spatial diffeomorphisn \cite{SW, BMM3} is focussed from a new angle. The expression of the torsionful connection is worked out which is in complete parallel with the relativistic theory. Also smooth transition of the connection to its well known torsionless expression is demonstrated. A complete (implicit) expression of the torsion tensor for the Newton Cartan spacetime is provided where the first order variables occur in a suggestive way. The well known result for the temporal part of torsion is reproduced from our expression.

$PT$ symmetry and a dynamical realization of the SU(1,1) algebra

We show that the elementary modes of the planar harmonic oscillator can be quantised in the framework of quantum mechanics based on pseudo-hermitian hamiltonians. These quantised modes are demonstrated to act as dynamical structures behind a new Jordan - Schwinger realization of the SU(1,1) algebra. This analysis complements the conventional Jordan - Schwinger construction of the SU(2) algebra based on hermitian hamiltonians of a doublet of oscillators.

Dynamical construction of Horava-Lifshitz geometry

We derive the projectable version of Horava - Lifshitz gravity from the localisation of the Galilean symmetry. Specifically we provide a dynamical construction of the metric, from first principles, that reproduces the transformations of the physical variables - lapse, shift and spatial component of the metric. Also, the measure defining the action is reproduced. The geometrical basis of the Horava-Lifshitz gravity is thereby revealed which also elucidates its difference from the Newton-Cartan geometry - the spacetime of Newtonian gravity. The connection of Newton's gravity with Horava-Lifshitz gravity is elucidated.

Entropy current in two dimensional anomalous hydrodynamics and a bound on the sum of the response parameters

The exact expression for the entropy current of a fluid in presence of two dimensional gravitational anomalies is given. To make it compatible with the second law of thermodynamics; i.e. positivity of the entropy production rate of a system (which is considered to be fundamental), we find a bound on the sum of the two response parameters ($\bar{C}_1$ and $\bar{C}_2$), in terms of the trace and diffeomorphism anomaly coefficients ($c_w$ and $c_g$). The precise expression, we obtain here, is $\bar{C}_1 + \bar{C}_2\leq 4π^2c_w + 8π^2 c_g$. Interestingly, when the bound is saturated corresponding to a reversible process, the result reproduces earlier findings obtained by either studying field theory on the cone or using the {\it Israel-Hartle-Hawking} boundary condition. Finally, possible physical implications and connections with the existing approaches are addressed.

General algorithm for non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariance

An algorithmic approach towards the formulation of non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariance has been developed which involves both matter and gauge fields. A step by step procedure has been provided which can accommodate all types of (abelian) gauge interaction. The algorithm is applied to the problem of a two dimensional electron moving under an external field and also under the Chern-Simons dynamics.

Hamiltonian analysis of interacting fluids

Ideal fluid dynamics is studied as a relativistic field theory with particular importance on its hamiltonian structure. The Schwinger condition, whose integrated version yields the stress tensor conservation, is explicitly verified both in equal-time and light-cone coordinate systems. We also consider the hamiltonian formulation of fluids interacting with an external gauge field. The complementary roles of the canonical(Noether) stress tensor and the symmetric one obtained by metric variation are discussed. Finally, a non-relativistic reduction of the system in light-cone coordinates has been carried out which reproduces results found earlier in the literature.

Non relativistic diffeomorphism and the geometry of the fractional quantum Hall effect

We show that our recently proposed method\cite{BMM1,BMM2,BMM3,BM4} of constructing nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariant field theories by gauging the Galilean symmetry provides a natural connection with the geometry of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE). Specifically, the covariant derivative that appears on gauging, exactly reproduces the form that yields the Hall viscosity and Wen-Zee shift \cite{CYF}.

A new formulation of non-relativistic diffeomorphism invariance

We provide a new formulation of nonrelativistic diffeomorphism invariance. It is generated by localising the usual global Galilean Symmetry. The correspondence with the type of diffeomorphism invariant models currently in vogue in the theory of fractional quantum Hall effect has been discussed. Our construction is shown to open up a general approach of model building in theoretical condensed matter physics. Also, this formulation has the capacity of obtaining Newton - Cartan geometry from the gauge procedure.

Constitutive relations and response parameters in two dimensional hydrodynamics with gauge and gravitational anomalies

We obtain the constitutive relations for the stress tensor and gauge current in $(1+1)$ dimensional hydrodynamics in the presence of both gauge and gravitational (conformal as well as diffeomorphism) anomalies. The relations between response parameters and anomaly coefficients are also found. The role of the Israel-Hartle-Hawking vacuum is emphasized. Finally, in the absence of gauge fields, earlier results obtained by a hydrodynamic expansion are reproduced.

Exact results in two dimensional chiral hydrodynamics with gravitational anomalies

An exact formulation of two dimensional chiral hydrodynamics with diffeomorphism and conformal anomalies is provided. The constitutive relation involving the stress tensor is computed. It reveals a one parameter class of solutions which is a new result. For a particular value of this parameter, the results found in the gradient expansion scheme are reproduced. Moreover, the constitutive relation is analogous to the corresponding relation for an ideal fluid, appropriately modified to include the chirality property, which has also been derived here.

Generalized supersymmetry and sigma models

In this paper, we discuss the generalizations of exact supersymmetries present in the supersymmetrized sigma models. These generalizations are made by making the supersymmetric transformation parameter field-dependent. Remarkably, the supersymmetric effective actions emerge naturally through the Jacobian associated with the generalized supersymmetry transformations. We explicitly demonstrate these for two different supersymmetric sigma models, namely, one dimensional sigma model and topological sigma model for hyperinstantons on quaternionic manifold.

Localisation of the Galilean symmetry and dynamical realisation of Newton-Cartan geometry

Newtonian gravity was formulated as a geometrodynamic theory as far back in 1930s by Elie Cartan in what is named aptly as Newton Cartan space time. Though there are several approaches of realizing the algebraic structure of the Newton Cartan geometry from a contraction of the relativistic results, a dynamical (field theoretic) realization of it is lacking. In this paper we present such a realization from the localisation of the Galilean Symmetry of nonrelativistic matter field theories.

New Hamiltonian analysis of Regge Teitelboim minisuperspace cosmology

A new Hamiltonian formulation of the minisuperspace cosmology following from the geodetic brane gravity model introduced by Regge and Teitelboim is presented. The model is considered in the framework of higher derivative theories which facilitates Hamiltonian formulation. The analysis is done using the equivalent first order approach. The constraint algebra is shown to realize a truncated Virasoro algebra. The gauge generator containing the exact number of gauge parameters is constructed. Equivalence between the gauge and reparametrization symmetries has been demonstrated. Complete gauge fixed computations have been provided and formal quantization is indicated.

Two dimensional hydrodynamics with gauge and gravitational anomalies

We present a new approach to discuss two dimensional chiral and non-chiral hydrodynamics with gauge and gravitational anomalies. Exact constitutive relations for the stress tensor and charge current are obtained. For the chiral theory, the constitutive relations may be put in the ideal (chiral) fluid form whereas the constitutive relations corresponding to non-chiral case do not take the ideal fluid form. The constitutive relations in the presence of both gravity and gauge sectors are new. These expressions, in the absence of the gauge sector, reproduce the results obtained in the gradient expansion approach.

BRST symmetry and $W$-algebra in higher derivative models

In this paper we discuss the (anti-)BRST symmetries and $W$-algebra of higher derivative theories of relativistic particles satisfying general gauge conditions. Using this formalism, the connection between the (anti-)BRST symmetries and $W$-algebra for the rigid relativistic particle is established. Incidentally, the full $W$-algebra emerges only when the anti-BRST transformations are considered in tandem with the BRST ones. Further, the BRST symmetry is made finite and coordinate-dependent. We show that such finite coordinate-dependent BRST symmetry changes the BRST invariant gauge-fixing fermion within the functional integration. This is exploited to connect two different arbitrary gauge conditions.

Holographic s-wave condensate with non-linear electrodynamics: A nontrivial boundary value problem

In this paper, considering the probe limit, we analytically study the onset of holographic s-wave condensate in the planar Schwarzschild-AdS background. Inspired by various low energy features of string theory, in the present work we replace the conventional Maxwell action by a (non-linear) Born-Infeld (BI) action which essentially corresponds to the higher derivative corrections of the gauge fields. Based on a variational method, which is commonly known as the Sturm-Liouville (SL) eigenvalue problem and considering a non-trivial asymptotic solution for the scalar field, we compute the critical temperature for the s-wave condensation. The results thus obtained analytically agree well with the numerical findings\cite{hs19}. As a next step, we extend our perturbative technique to compute the order parameter for the condensation. Interestingly our analytic results are found to be of the same order as the numerical values obtained earlier.

New (Ghost-Free) Formulation of the Pais-Uhlenbeck Oscillator

We provide a new formulation of the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator which is a prototype of a higher derivative model. Different parametrisations that reveal the model as a combination of two simple harmonic oscillators are introduced. Conventional results are reproduced in one realisation. In another, all problems related to lack of unitarity or boundedness of energy are eliminated since the hamiltonian is expressed as a sum of the hamiltonians of two decoupled harmonic oscillators. Recourse to imaginary scaling transformation or PT-symmetry, as advocated in the literature, are totally avoided.

A unified picture of phase transition: from liquid-vapour systems to AdS black holes

Based on fundamental concepts of thermodynamics we examine phase transitions in black holes defined in Anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces. The method is in line with that used a long ago to understand the liquid-vapour phase transition where the first order derivatives of Gibbs potential are discontinuous and Clausius-Clapeyron equation is satisfied. The idea here is to consider the AdS black holes as grand-canonical ensembles and study phase transition defined by the discontinuity of second order derivatives of Gibbs potential. We analytically check that this phase transition between the `smaller' and `larger' mass black holes obey Ehrenfest relations defined at the critical point and hence confirm a second order phase transition. This include both the rotating and charged black holes in Einstein gravity.

Critical behavior of Born Infeld AdS black holes in higher dimensions

Based on a canonical framework, we investigate the critical behavior of Born-Infeld AdS black holes in higher dimensions. As a special case, considering the appropriate limit, we also analyze the critical phenomena for Reissner Nordstrom AdS black holes. The critical points are marked by the divergences in the heat capacity at constant charge. The static critical exponents associated with various thermodynamic entities are computed and shown to satisfy the thermodynamic scaling laws. These scaling laws have also been found to be compatible with the static scaling hypothesis. Furthermore, we show that the values of these exponents are universal and do not depend on the spatial dimensionality of the AdS space. We also provide a suggestive way to calculate the critical exponents associated with the spatial correlation which satisfy the scaling laws of second kind.

preprint2012arXiv

Critical phenomena in Born-Infeld AdS black holes

We investigate the thermodynamics of critical phenomena in Born-Infeld AdS black holes using a canonical ensemble. The critical behavior has been studied near the critical point which is characterized by a discontinuity in the heat capacity at constant charge. We explicitly calculate the critical exponents of the relevant thermodynamic quantities. These exponents satisfy all the thermodynamic scaling laws. We also check the Generalized Homogeneous Function (GHF) hypothesis (or the scaling hypothesis) which is shown to be compatible with the thermodynamic scaling laws. Finally we check the validity of the scaling laws of second kind which include the critical exponents associated with the spatial correlation. In the appropriate limit our results also provide the corresponding expressions for the Reissner Nordstrom AdS case.

Trivial symmetries in a 3D topological torsion model of gravity

We study the gauge symmetries in a Mielke-Baekler type model of gravity in 2+1 dimensions. The model is built in a Poincare gauge theory framework where localisation of Poincare symmetries lead to gravity. However, explicit construction of gauge symmetries in the model through a Hamiltonian procedure yields an apparently different set of symmetries, as has been noted by various authors. Here, we show that the two sets of symmetries are actually equivalent in a canonical sense, their difference being just a set of trivial symmetries.

preprint2011arXiv

Gauge symmetry and W-algebra in higher derivative systems

The problem of gauge symmetry in higher derivative Lagrangian systems is discussed from a Hamiltonian point of view. The number of independent gauge parameters is shown to be in general {\it{less}} than the number of independent primary first class constraints, thereby distinguishing it from conventional first order systems. Different models have been considered as illustrative examples. In particular we show a direct connection between the gauge symmetry and the W-algebra for the rigid relativistic particle.

Hamiltonian analysis of symmetries in a massive theory of gravity

We construct the generator of hamiltonian gauge symmetries in a 2+1 dimensional massive theory of gravity, proposed recently, through a systematic off-shell algorithm. Using a field dependant map among gauge parameters we show that the symmetries obtained from this generator are on-shell equivalent to the Poincaré gauge symmetries. We also clarify certain subtle issues concerning the implementation of this map.

New approach to phase transitions in black holes

We develop an analogy between fluids and black holes to study phase transitions in the latter. The entropy-temperature graph shows the onset of a phase transition without any latent heat. The nature of this continuous (higher order) phase transition is examined in details. We find that the second order derivatives of the free energy diverge at the critical temperature. Also, the transition is smeared instead of sharp, so that the usual Ehrenfest's scheme breaks down. A generalised version of this scheme is formulated which is shown to be consistent with the phase transition curves.

preprint2011arXiv

Poincaré gauge symmetries, hamiltonian symmetries and trivial gauge transformations

We resolve a problem of finding the Poincare symmetries from hamiltonian gauge symmetries constructed through a canonical procedure of handling constrained systems. Through the use of Noether identities corresponding to the symmetries, we motivate a procedure of finding the map between the hamiltonian and Poincare gauge parameters. Using this map, we show that the Poincare and hamiltonian gauge symmetries are equivalent, modulo trivial gauge transformations.

Second Order Phase Transition and Thermodynamic Geometry in Kerr-AdS Black Hole

We discuss a scheme based on Ehrenfest like equations to exhibit and classify transitions between two phases (with "smaller" and "larger" masses) of Kerr AdS black holes. We show that for fixed angular velocity this phase transition is of second order as both Ehrenfest's equations are satisfied. Finally we make a close connection of the results found from this analysis with those obtained from the thermodynamic state space geometry approach.

Thermodynamics of phase transition in higher dimensional AdS black holes

We investigate the thermodynamics of phase transition for $ (n+1) $ dimensional Reissner Nordstrom (RN)-AdS black holes using a grand canonical ensemble. This phase transition is characterized by a discontinuity in specific heat. The phase transition occurs from a lower mass black hole with negative specific heat to a higher mass black hole with positive specific heat. By exploring Ehrenfest's scheme we show that this is a second order phase transition. Explicit expressions for the critical temperature and critical mass are derived. In appropriate limits the results for $ (n+1) $ dimensional Schwarzschild AdS black holes are obtained.

A Superspace formulation of Yang-Mills theory on sphere

A superspace approach to the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism for the Yang-Mills theory on an n-dimensional unit sphere, S_1^{n}, is developed in a manifestly covariant manner based on the rotational supersymmetry characterized by the supergroup OSp(n+1|2). This is done by employing an (n+2)-dimensional unit supersphere, S_1^{n|2}, parametrized by n commutative and 2 anticommutative coordinate variables so that it includes S_1^{n} as a subspace and realizes the OSp(n+1|2) supersymmetry. In this superspace formulation, referred to as the supersphere formulation, the so-called horizontality condition is concisely expressed in terms of the rank-3 field strength tensor of a Yang-Mills superfield on S_1^{n|2}. The supersphere formulation completely covers the BRST gauge-fixing procedure for the Yang-Mills theory on S_1^{n} provided by us [R. Banerjee and S. Deguchi, Phys. Lett. B 632 (2006) 579, arXiv:hep-th/0509161]. Furthermore, this formulation admits the (massive) Curci-Ferrari model defined on S_1^{n}, describing the gauge-fixing and mass terms on S_1^{n} together as a mass term on S_1^{n|2}.

From black holes to emergent gravity

Many inequivalent approaches to study black holes yield identical results. Any meaningful theory of gravity should explain the origin of this property. Here we show that the basic holomorphic modes characterising the underlying two dimensional conformal symmetry near the horizon bring about this universality. Moreover these modes lead to a law of equipartition of energy for black holes which suggests a statistical origin of gravity. This emergent nature of gravity is further bolstered by showing the equivalence of entropy with the action $\left(S=-\frac{i}{\hbar}\,I\right)$ and expressing the generalised Smarr formula for mass as a thermodynamic relation, $S=\frac{E}{2T}$ where $S$, $E$ and $T$ are the entropy, energy and temperature, respectively, of a black hole.

Generalised Uncertainty Principle, Remnant Mass and Singularity Problem in Black Hole Thermodynamics

We have derived a new Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP) based on certain general assumptions. This GUP is consistent with predictions from string theory. It is then used to study Schwarzschild black hole thermodynamics. Corrections to the mass-temperature relation, area law and heat capacity are obtained. We find that the evaporation process stops at a particular mass, referred as the remnant mass. This is instrumental in bypassing the well known singularity problem that occurs in a semiclassical approach.

Glassy Phase Transition and Stability in Black Holes

Black hole thermodynamics, confined to the semi-classical regime, cannot address the thermodynamic stability of a black hole in flat space. Here we show that inclusion of correction beyond the semi-classical approximation makes a black hole thermodynamically stable. This stability is reached through a phase transition. By using Ehrenfest's scheme we further prove that this is a glassy phase transition with a Prigogine-Defay ratio close to 3. This value is well placed within the desired bound (2 to 5) for a glassy phase transition. Thus our analysis indicates a very close connection between the phase transition phenomena of a black hole and glass forming systems. Finally, we discuss the robustness of our results by considering different normalisations for the correction term.

Killing Symmetries and Smarr Formula for Black Holes in Arbitrary Dimensions

We calculate the effective Komar conserved quantities for the $N+1$ dimensional charged Myers-Perry spacetime. At the event horizon we derive a new identity $K_{χ^μ}=2ST$ where the left hand side is the Komar conserved quantity corresponding to the null Killing vector $χ^μ$ while in the right hand side $S,~T$ are the black hole entropy and Hawking temperature. From this identity we also derive the generalized Smarr formula connecting the macroscopic parameters $M,~J,~Q$ of the black hole with its surface gravity and horizon area. The consistency of this new formula is established by an independent algebraic approach.

preprint2010arXiv

Komar energy and Smarr formula for noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole

We calculate the Komar energy $E$ for a noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole. A deformation from the conventional identity $E=2ST_H$ is found in the next to leading order computation in the noncommutative parameter $θ$ (i.e. $\mathcal{O}(\sqrtθe^{-M^2/θ})$) which is also consistent with the fact that the area law now breaks down. This deformation yields a nonvanishing Komar energy at the extremal point $T_{H}=0$ of these black holes. We then work out the Smarr formula, clearly elaborating the differences from the standard result $M=2ST_H$, where the mass ($M$) of the black hole is identified with the asymptotic limit of the Komar energy. Similar conclusions are also shown to hold for a deSitter--Schwarzschild geometry.

New type of phase transition in Reissner Nordström - AdS black hole and its thermodynamic geometry

The phase transition of a RN-AdS black hole is studied in details using Ehrenfest's equations. There is no discontinuity in entropy which signals a lack of any first order phase transition. We then show that although Ehrenfest's first equation is satisfied, the second is not, so that a true second order phase transition is also ruled out. However this deviation from the second Ehrenfest's equation, for a certain range of the black hole charge, indicates the existence of a new glassy type transition. We finally study the thermodynamic behaviour using state space geometry and find that the scalar curvature diverges exactly at those points where the heat capacity diverges.

Quantum gravitational correction to the Hawking temperature from the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi model

We solve the quantum constraint equations of the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi model in a semiclassical approximation in which an expansion is performed with respect to the Planck length. We recover in this way the standard expression for the Hawking temperature as well as its first quantum gravitational correction. We then interpret this correction in terms of the one-loop trace anomaly of the energy-momentum tensor and thereby make contact with earlier work on quantum black holes.

Quantum tunneling and black hole spectroscopy

The entropy-area spectrum of a black hole has been a long-standing and unsolved problem. Based on a recent methodology introduced by two of the authors, for the black hole radiation (Hawking effect) as tunneling effect, we obtain the entropy spectrum of a black hole. In Einstein's gravity, we show that both entropy and area spectrum are evenly spaced. But in more general theories (like Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity), although the entropy spectrum is equispaced, the corresponding area spectrum is not.

Symmetries of topological gravity with torsion in the hamiltonian and lagrangian formalisms

A systematic analysis of the symmetries of topological 3D gravity with torsion and a cosmological term, in the first order formalism, has been performed in details - both in the hamiltonian and lagrangian formalisms. This illuminates the connection between the symmetries of curved spacetime (diffeomorphisms plus local Lorentz transformations) with the Poincare gauge transformations. The Poincare gauge symmetries of the action are shown to be inequivalent to its gauge symmetries. Finally, the complete analysis is compared with the metric formulation where the diffeomorphism symmetry is shown to be equivalent to the gauge symmetry.

Voros product, Noncommutative Schwarzschild Black Hole and Corrected Area Law

We show the importance of the Voros product in defining a noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole. The corrected entropy/area-law is then computed in the tunneling formalism. Two types of corrections are considered; one, due to the effects of noncommutativity and the other, due to the effects of going beyond the semiclassical approximation. The leading correction to the semiclassical entropy/area-law is logarithmic and its coefficient involves the noncommutative parameter.

Aspects of Diffeomorphism and Conformal invariance in classical Liouville theory

The interplay between the diffeomorphism and conformal symmetries (a feature common in quantum field theories) is shown to be exhibited for the case of black holes in two dimensional classical Liouville theory. We show that although the theory is conformally invariant in the near horizon limit, there is a breaking of the diffeomorphism symmetry at the classical level. On the other hand, in the region away from the horizon, the conformal symmetry of the theory gets broken with the diffeomorphism symmetry remaining intact.

Connecting anomaly and tunneling methods for Hawking effect through chirality

The role of chirality is discussed in unifying the anomaly and the tunneling formalisms for deriving the Hawking effect. Using the chirality condition and starting from the familiar form of the trace anomaly, the chiral (gravitational) anomaly, manifested as a nonconservation of the stress tensor, near the horizon of a black hole, is derived. Solution of this equation yields the stress tensor whose asymptotic infinity limit gives the Hawking flux. Finally, use of the same chirality condition in the tunneling formalism gives the Hawking temperature that is compatible with the flux obtained by anomaly method.

Quantum Tunneling Beyond Semiclassical Approximation

Hawking radiation as tunneling by Hamilton-Jacobi method beyond semiclassical approximation is analysed. We compute all quantum corrections in the single particle action revealing that these are proportional to the usual semiclassical contribution. We show that a simple choice of the proportionality constants reproduces the one loop back reaction effect in the spacetime, found by conformal field theory methods, which modifies the Hawking temperature of the black hole. Using the law of black hole mechanics we give the corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking area law following from the modified Hawking temperature. Some examples are explicitly worked out.

Deformed Symmetry in Snyder Space and Relativistic Particle Dynamics

We describe the deformed Poincare-conformal symmetries implying the covariance of the noncommutative space obeying Snyder's algebra. Relativistic particle models invariant under these deformed symmetries are presented. A gauge (reparametrisation) independent derivation of Snyder's algebra from such models is given. The algebraic transformations relating the deformed symmetries with the usual (undeformed) ones are provided. Finally, an alternative form of an action yielding Snyder's algebra is discussed where the mass of a relativistic particle gets identified with the inverse of the noncommutativity parameter.

Gauge Symmetries on $θ$-Deformed Spaces

A Hamiltonian formulation of gauge symmetries on noncommutative ($θ$ deformed) spaces is discussed. Both cases- star deformed gauge transformation with normal coproduct and undeformed gauge transformation with twisted coproduct- are considered. While the structure of the gauge generator is identical in either case, there is a difference in the computation of the graded Poisson brackets that yield the gauge transformations. Our analysis provides a novel interpretation of the twisted coproduct for gauge transformations.

Duality Symmetry and Plane Waves in Non-Commutative Electrodynamics

We generalise the electric-magnetic duality in standard Maxwell theory to its non-commutative version. Both space-space and space-time non-commutativity are necessary. The duality symmetry is then extended to a general class of non-commutative gauge theories that goes beyond non-commutative electrodynamics. As an application of this symmetry, plane wave solutions are analysed. Dispersion relations following from these solutions show that general non-commutative gauge theories other than electrodynamics admits two waves with distinct polarisations propagating at different velocities in the same direction.

Seiberg-Witten maps and commutator anomalies in noncommutative electrodynamics

We exploit the Seiberg-Witten maps for fields and currents in a U(1) gauge theory relating the noncommutative and commutative (usual) descriptions to obtain the O(θ) structure of the commutator anomalies in noncommutative electrodynamics. These commutators involve the (covariant) current-current algebra and the (covariant) current-field algebra. We also establish the compatibility of the anomalous commutators with the noncommutative covariant anomaly through the use of certain consistency conditions derived here.

Exact Seiberg-Witten Map, Induced Gravity and Topological Invariants in Noncommutative Field Theories

We revisit the exact Seiberg-Witten (SW) map on Dirac-Born-Infeld actions, making a connection with the deformation quantization scheme. The picture on field dependent induced gravity from noncommutativity becomes more transparent in the context of deformation quantization. We also find an exact SW map for an adjoint scalar field, consistent with that deduced from RR couplings of unstable non-BPS D-branes. The dual description via the exact SW map can again be interpreted as the ordinary field theory coupling to gravity induced by gauge fields. Using the exact SW maps, we further discuss several aspects of topological invariants in noncommutative (NC) gauge theory. Especially, it is shown that the K-theory class on NC instantons is mapped to the usual second Chern class via exact SW map and it leads to an exact SW map between commutative and NC Chern-Simons terms.

Noncommutative Tachyon Kinks as D$(p-1)$-branes from Unstable D$p$-brane

We study noncommutative (NC) field theory of a real NC tachyon and NC U(1) gauge field, describing the dynamics of an unstable D$p$-brane. For every given set of diagonal component of open string metric $G_{0}$, NC parameter $θ_{0}$, and interpolating electric field ${\hat E}$, we find all possible static NC kinks as exact solutions, in spite of complicated NC terms, which are classified by an array of NC kink-antikink and topological NC kinks. By computing their tensions and charges, those configurations are identified as an array of D0${\bar {\rm D}}$0 and single stable D0 from the unstable D1, respectively. When the interpolating electric field has critical value as $G_{0}^{2}={\hat E}^{2}$, the obtained topological kink becomes a BPS object with nonzero thickness and is identified as BPS D0 in the fluid of fundamental strings. Particularly in the scaling limit of infinite $θ_{0}$ and vanishing $G_{0}$ and ${\hat E}$, while keeping $G_{0}θ_{0}={\hat E}θ_{0}=1$, finiteness of the tension of NC kink corresponds to tensionless kink in ordinary effective field theory. An extension to stable D$(p-1)$ from unstable D$p$ is straightforward for pure electric cases with parallel NC parameter and interpolating two-form field.

Anomalies in noncommutative gauge theories, Seiberg-Witten transformation and Ramond-Ramond couplings

We propose an exact expression for the unintegrated form of the star gauge invariant axial anomaly in an arbitrary even dimensional gauge theory. The proposal is based on the inverse Seiberg-Witten map and identities related to it, obtained earlier by comparing Ramond-Ramond couplings in different decsriptions. The integrated anomalies are expressed in terms of a simplified version of the Elliott formula involving the noncommutative Chern character. These anomalies, under the Seiberg-Witten transformation, reduce to the ordinary axial anomalies. Compatibility with existing results of anomalies in noncommutative theories is established.

A Canonical Approach to the Quantization of the Damped Harmonic Oscillator

We provide a new canonical approach for studying the quantum mechanical damped harmonic oscillator based on the doubling of degrees of freedom approach. Explicit expressions for Lagrangians of the elementary modes of the problem, characterising both forward and backward time propagations are given. A Hamiltonian analysis, showing the equivalence with the Lagrangian approach, is also done. Based on this Hamiltonian analysis, the quantization of the model is discussed.

On the Associativity of Star Product in Systems with Nonlinear Constraints

The noncommutative star product of phase space functions is, by construction, associative for both non-degenerate and degenerate case (involving only second class constraints) as has been shown by Berezin, Batalin and Tyutin. However, for the latter case, the manifest associativity is lost if an arbitrary coordinate system is used but can be restored by using an unconstrained canonical set. The existence of such a canonical transformation is guaranteed by a theorem due to Maskawa and Nakajima. In terms of these new variables, the Kontsevich series for the star product reduces to an exponential series which is manifestly associative. We also show, using the star product formalism, that the angular momentum of a particle moving on a circle is quantized.

Seiberg Witten Map and the Axial Anomaly in Noncommutative Field Theory

Using the point-splitting regularisation, we calculate the axial anomaly in an arbitrary even dimensional Non-Commutative (NC) field theory. Our result is (star) gauge invariant in its {\it unintegrated} form, to the leading order in the NC parameter. Exploiting the Seiberg Witten map, this result gets transformed to the familiar Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in ordinary space-time. Furthermore, using this map, we derive an expression for the unintegrated axial anomaly for constant fields in NC space-time, that is valid to all finite orders of the NC parameter.
