Optical spin locking of a solid-state qubit

Quantum control of solid-state spin qubits typically involves pulses in the microwave domain, drawing from the well-developed toolbox of magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Driving a solid-state spin by optical means offers a high-speed alternative, which in the presence of limited spin coherence makes it the preferred approach for high-fidelity quantum control. Bringing the full versatility of magnetic spin resonance to the optical domain requires full phase and amplitude control of the optical fields. Here, we imprint a programmable microwave sequence onto a laser field and perform electron spin resonance in a semiconductor quantum dot via a two-photon Raman process. We show that this approach yields full SU(2) spin control with over 98% pi-rotation fidelity. We then demonstrate its versatility by implementing a particular multi-axis control sequence, known as spin locking. Combined with electron-nuclear Hartmann-Hahn resonances which we also report in this work, this sequence will enable efficient coherent transfer of a quantum state from the electron spin to the mesoscopic nuclear ensemble.

Intrinsic limit to electron spin coherence in InGaAs quantum dots featuring strain-induced nuclear dispersion

The Zeeman-split spin-states of a single electron confined in a self-assembled quantum dot provide an optically-accessible spin qubit. For III-V materials the nuclear spins of the solid-state host provide an intrinsic noise source, resulting in electron-spin dephasing times of few nanoseconds. While a comprehensive study of electron-spin dynamics at low magnetic field has recently been carried out, what limits the electron coherence in these systems remains unclear, in part due to the dominant effect of measurement-induced dynamic polarisation of the nuclear bath. We develop an all-optical method to access the quantum dot spin-state without perturbing the nuclear environment. We use this method to implement Hahn-echo decoupling and reach the intrinsic limit to coherence set by inhomogeneous strain fields coupling to quadrupolar moments of the nuclear bath. These results indicate that the extension of electron spin coherence beyond this few-microsecond limit necessitates the reduction of strain-induced quadrupolar broadening in these materials.

Direct photonic coupling of a semiconductor quantum dot and a trapped ion

Coupling individual quantum systems lies at the heart of building scalable quantum networks. Here, we report the first direct photonic coupling between a semiconductor quantum dot and a trapped ion and we demonstrate that single photons generated by a quantum dot controllably change the internal state of an $\textrm{Yb}^+$ ion. We ameliorate the effect of the sixty-fold mismatch of the radiative linewidths with coherent photon generation and a high-finesse fiber-based optical cavity enhancing the coupling between the single photon and the ion. The transfer of information presented here via the classical correlations between the $σ_z$-projection of the quantum-dot spin and the internal state of the ion provides a promising step towards quantum state-transfer in a hybrid photonic network.
