Covariant calculation of the partition function of the two-dimensional sigma model on compact two-surfaces

Motivated by string theory connection, a covariant procedure for perturbative calculation of the partition function of the two-dimensional generalized $σ$-model is considered. The importance of a consistent regularization of the measure in the path integral is emphasized. The partition function is computed for a number of specific 2-manifolds: sphere, disk and torus.

Mixed-symmetry continuous-spin fields in flat and AdS spaces

In the framework of light-cone gauge approach, bosonic and fermionic mixed-symmetry continuous-spin fields in AdS space and flat space are considered. For such fields, the light-cone gauge actions are found. Realization of relativistic symmetries of AdS and flat spaces on the continuous-spin fields is also presented. Simple realization of spin operators is found. With respect to vector variable entering the continuous-spin fields, the spin operators for the fields in flat space turn out to be first-order differential operators, while, for the the fields in AdS space, the spin operators are realized as the second-order differential operators. By product, we obtain also the simple description of triplectic mixed-symmetry continuous-spin fields.

Superfield approach to interacting N=2 massive and massless supermultiplets in 3d flat space

Massive arbitrary spin supermultiplets and massless (scalar and spin one-half) supermultiplets of the N=2 Poincare superalgebra in three-dimensional flat space are considered. Both the integer spin and half-integer spin supermultiplets are studied. For such massive and massless supermultiplets, a formulation in terms of light-cone gauge unconstrained superfields defined in a momentum superspace is developed. For the supermultiplets under consideration a superspace first derivative representation for all cubic interaction vertices is obtained. A superspace representation for dynamical generators of the N=2 Poincare superalgebra is also found.

Cubic interactions for arbitrary spin N-extended massless supermultiplets in 4d flat space

N-extended massless arbitrary integer and half-integer spin supermultiplets in four dimensional flat space are studied in the framework of light-cone gauge formalism. For such multiplets, by using light-cone momentum superspace, we build unconstrained light-cone gauge superfield formulation. The superfield formulation is used to develop a superspace representation for all cubic interactions vertices of the N-extended massless supermultiplets. Our suitable treatment of the light-cone gauge superfields allows us to obtain attractively simple superspace representation for the cubic interaction vertices. Superspace realization of relativistic symmetries of the N-extended Poincare superalgebra on space of interacting fields is also obtained.

BRST-BV approach to conformal fields

Using the BRST--BV approach, we consider totally symmetric arbitrary integer spin conformal fields propagating in flat space. For such fields, we obtain the ordinary-derivative BRST--BV Lagrangian that is invariant under gauge transformations. In our approach, the ordinary-derivative Lagrangian and gauge transformations are constructed in terms of the respective traceless gauge fields and traceless gauge transformation parameters. We also obtain a realization of conformal algebra symmetries on the space of fields and antifields entering the BRST--BV formulation of conformal fields.

Extended hamiltonian action for arbitrary spin fields in flat and AdS spaces

Totally symmetric arbitrary spin massless and massive free fields in flat and AdS spaces and conformal fields in flat space are studied. Extended gauge invariant hamiltonian action for such fields is obtained. The action is constructed out of phase space fields and Lagrange multipliers which are free of algebraic constraints. Gauge transformations of the phase space fields and Lagrange multipliers are derived. Use of the Poincare parametrization of AdS space allows us to treat fields in flat space and AdS space on equal footing.

Light-cone AdS/CFT-adapted approach to AdS fields/currents, shadows, and conformal fields

Light-cone gauge formulation of fields in AdS space and conformal field theory in flat space adapted for the study of AdS/CFT correspondence is developed. Arbitrary spin mixed-symmetry fields in AdS space and arbitrary spin mixed-symmetry currents, shadows, and conformal fields in flat space are considered on an equal footing. For the massless and massive fields in AdS and the conformal fields in flat space, simple light-cone gauge actions leading to decoupled equations of motion are found. For the currents and shadows, simple expressions for all 2-point functions are also found. We demonstrate that representation of conformal algebra generators on space of currents, shadows, and conformal fields can be built in terms of spin operators entering the light-cone gauge formulation of AdS fields. This considerably simplifies the study of AdS/CFT correspondence. Light-cone gauge actions for totally symmetric arbitrary spin long conformal fields in flat space are presented. We apply our approach to the study of totally antisymmetric (one-column) and mixed-symmetry (two-column) fields in AdS space and currents, shadows, and conformal fields in flat space.

Long, partial-short, and special conformal fields

In the framework of metric-like approach, totally symmetric arbitrary spin bosonic conformal fields propagating in flat space-time are studied. Depending on the values of conformal dimension, spin, and dimension of space-time, we classify all conformal field as long, partial-short, short, and special conformal fields. An ordinary-derivative (second-derivative) Lagrangian formulation for such conformal fields is obtained. The ordinary-derivative Lagrangian formulation is realized by using double-traceless gauge fields, Stueckelberg fields, and auxiliary fields. Gauge-fixed Lagrangian invariant under global BRST transformations is obtained. The gauge-fixed BRST Lagrangian is used for the computation of partition functions for all conformal fields. Using the result for the partition functions, numbers of propagating D.o.F for the conformal fields are also found.

BRST-BV approach to massless fields adapted to AdS/CFT correspondence

Using BRST-BV formulation of relativistic dynamics, arbitrary spin massless and massive field propagating in flat space and arbitrary spin massless fields propagating in AdS space are considered. For such fields, BRST-BV Lagrangians invariant under gauge transformations are obtained. The Lagrangians and gauge transformations are built in terms of traceless gauge fields and traceless gauge transformation parameters. The use of the Poincare parametrization of AdS space allows us to get simple BRST-BV Lagrangian for AdS fields. By imposing the Siegel gauge condition, we get gauge-fixed Lagrangian which leads to decoupled equations of motion for AdS fields. Such equations of motion considerably simplify the study of AdS/CFT correspondence. In the basis of conformal algebra, realization of relativistic symmetries on space of fields and antifields entering the BRST-BV formulation of AdS fields is obtained.

Arbitrary spin conformal fields in (A)dS

Totally symmetric arbitrary spin conformal fields in (A)dS space of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Ordinary-derivative and gauge invariant Lagrangian formulation for such fields is obtained. Gauge symmetries are realized by using auxiliary fields and Stueckelberg fields. We demonstrate that Lagrangian of conformal field is decomposed into a sum of gauge invariant Lagrangians for massless, partial-massless, and massive fields. We obtain a mass spectrum of the partial-massless and massive fields and confirm the conjecture about the mass spectrum made in the earlier literature. In contrast to conformal fields in flat space, the kinetic terms of conformal fields in (A)dS space turn out to be diagonal with respect to fields entering the Lagrangian. Explicit form of conformal transformation which maps conformal field in flat space to conformal field in (A)dS space is obtained. Covariant Lorentz-like and de-Donder like gauge conditions leading to simple gauge-fixed Lagrangian of conformal fields are proposed. Using such gauge-fixed Lagrangian, which is invariant under global BRST transformations, we explain how the partition function of conformal field is obtained in the framework of our approach.

BRST invariant effective action of shadow fields, conformal fields, and AdS/CFT

Totally symmetric arbitrary spin massless and massive fields in AdS space are studied. For such fields, we obtain Lagrangians which are invariant under global BRST transformations. The Lagrangians are used for computation of partition functions and effective actions. We demonstrate that BRST invariant bulk action for massless field evaluated on the solution of Dirichlet problem for gauge massless fields and Faddeev-Popov fields leads to BRST invariant effective action for canonical shadow gauge fields and shadow Faddeev-Popov fields, while the BRST invariant bulk action for massive field evaluated on the solution of Dirichlet problem for gauge massive fields and Faddeev-Popov fields leads to BRST invariant effective action for anomalous shadow gauge fields and shadow Faddeev-Popov fields. The leading logarithmic divergence of the regularized effective action for the canonical shadow field leads to simple BRST invariant action of conformal field. We demonstrate that the Nakanishi-Laudrup fields entering the BRST invariant Lagrangian of conformal field can geometrically be interpreted as boundary values of massless AdS fields.

Light-cone gauge approach to arbitrary spin fields, currents, and shadows

Totally symmetric arbitrary spin fields in AdS space, conformal fields, conformal currents, and shadow fields in flat space are studied. Light-cone formulation for such fields, currents, and shadows is obtained. Use of the Poincare parametrization of AdS space allows us to treat fields in flat and AdS spaces on equal footing. Light-cone gauge realization of relativistic symmetries for fields, currents, and shadows is also obtained. The light-cone formulation for fields is obtained by using the gauge invariant Lagrangian which is presented in terms of the modified de Donder divergence, while the light-cone formulation for currents and shadows is obtained by using gauge invariant approach to currents and shadows. This allows us to demonstrate explicitly how ladder operators entering the gauge invariant formulation of fields, currents, and shadows manifest themselves in the light-cone formulation for fields, currents, and shadows.

Mixed-symmetry fields in AdS(5), conformal fields, and AdS/CFT

Mixed-symmetry arbitrary spin massive, massless, and self-dual massive fields in AdS(5) are studied. Light-cone gauge actions for such fields leading to decoupled equations of motion are constructed. Light-cone gauge formulation of mixed-symmetry anomalous conformal currents and shadows in 4d flat space is also developed. AdS/CFT correspondence for normalizable and non-normalizable modes of mixed-symmetry AdS fields and the respective boundary mixed-symmetry anomalous conformal currents and shadows is studied. We demonstrate that the light-cone gauge action for massive mixed-symmetry AdS field evaluated on solution of the Dirichlet problem amounts to the light-cone gauge 2-point vertex of mixed-symmetry anomalous shadow. Also we show that UV divergence of the action for mixed-symmetry massive AdS field with some particular value of mass parameter evaluated on the Dirichlet problem amounts to the action of long mixed-symmetry conformal field, while UV divergence of the action for mixed-symmetry massless AdS field evaluated on the Dirichlet problem amounts to the action of short mixed-symmetry conformal field. We speculate on string theory interpretation of a model which involves short low-spin conformal fields and long higher-spin conformal fields.

CFT adapted approach to massless fermionic fields, AdS/CFT, and fermionic conformal fields

Fermionic totally symmetric arbitrary spin massless fields in AdS space of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Using Poincaré parametrization of AdS space, CFT adapted gauge invariant formulation for such fields is developed. We demonstrate that the curvature and radial coordinate contributions to Lagrangian and gauge transformation of the AdS fields can be expressed in terms of ladder operators. Covariant and modified de Donder gauge conditions are proposed. The modified de Donder gauge leads to decoupled equations of motion which can easily be solved in terms of the Bessel function. The AdS/CFT correspondence for conformal current and shadow field and the respective normalizable and non-normalizable modes of fermionic massless AdS field is studied. The AdS field is considered by using the modified de Donder gauge which simplifies considerably the study of AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that on-shell leftover gauge symmetries of bulk massless field are related to gauge symmetries of boundary conformal current and shadow field. We compute the bulk action on solution of the Dirichlet problem and obtain two-point gauge invariant vertex of shadow field. Also we shown that the UV divergence of the two-point gauge invariant vertex gives higher-derivative action of fermionic conformal field.

Anomalous conformal currents, shadow fields and massive AdS fields

In the framework of gauge invariant approach involving Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields, totally symmetric arbitrary spin anomalous conformal current and shadow field in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant differential constraints for such anomalous conformal current and shadow field and realization of global conformal symmetries are obtained. Gauge invariant two-point vertex of the arbitrary spin anomalous shadow field is also obtained. In Stueckelberg gauge frame, the two-point gauge invariant vertex becomes the standard two-point vertex of CFT. Light-cone gauge two-point vertex of the arbitrary spin anomalous shadow field is derived. The AdS/CFT correspondence for arbitrary spin anomalous conformal current and shadow field and the respective normalizable and non-normalizable modes of massive arbitrary spin AdS field is studied. The AdS field is considered in modified de Donder gauge which simplifies considerably the study of AdS/CFT correspondence. We show that on-shell leftover gauge symmetries of bulk massive field are related to gauge symmetries of boundary anomalous conformal current and shadow field, while the modified de Donder gauge condition for bulk massive field is related to differential constraints for boundary anomalous conformal current and shadow field.

BRST-BV approach to cubic interaction vertices for massive and massless higher-spin fields

Using BRST-BV formulation of relativistic dynamics, we study arbitrary spin massive and massless fields propagating in flat space. Generating functions of gauge invariant off-shell cubic interaction vertices for mixed-symmetry and totally symmetric fields are obtained. For the case of totally symmetric fields, we derive restrictions on the allowed values of spins and the number of derivatives, which provide a classification of cubic interaction vertices for such fields. As by product, we present simple expressions for the Yang-Mills and gravitational interactions of massive totally symmetric arbitrary spin fields.

Cubic interaction vertices for fermionic and bosonic arbitrary spin fields

Using the light-cone gauge approach to relativistic field dynamics, we study arbitrary spin fermionic and bosonic fields propagating in flat space of dimension greater than or equal to four. Generating functions of parity invariant cubic interaction vertices for totally symmetric and mixed-symmetry massive and massless fields are obtained. For the case of totally symmetric fields, we derive restrictions on the allowed values of spins and the number of derivatives. These restrictions provide a complete classification of parity invariant cubic interaction vertices for totally symmetric fermionic and bosonic fields. As an example of application of the light-cone formalism, we obtain simple expressions for the Yang-Mills and gravitational interactions of massive arbitrary spin fermionic fields. For some particular cases, using our light-cone cubic vertices, we discuss the corresponding manifestly Lorentz invariant and on-shell gauge invariant cubic vertices.

Ordinary-derivative formulation of conformal totally symmetric arbitrary spin bosonic fields

Conformal totally symmetric arbitrary spin bosonic fields in flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Second-derivative (ordinary-derivative) formulation for such fields is developed. We obtain gauge invariant Lagrangian and the corresponding gauge transformations. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving the Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields. Realization of global conformal boost symmetries on conformal gauge fields is obtained. Modified de Donder gauge condition and de Donder-Stueckelberg gauge condition are introduced. Using the de Donder-Stueckelberg gauge frame, equivalence of the ordinary-derivative and higher-derivative approaches is demonstrated. On-shell degrees of freedom of the arbitrary spin conformal field are analyzed. Ordinary-derivative light-cone gauge Lagrangian of conformal fields is also presented. Interrelations between the ordinary-derivative gauge invariant formulation of conformal fields and the gauge invariant formulation of massive fields are discussed.

6d conformal gravity

In the framework of ordinary-derivative approach, conformal gravity in space-time of dimension six is studied. The field content, in addition to conformal graviton field, includes two auxiliary rank-2 symmetric tensor fields, two Stueckelberg vector fields and one Stueckelberg scalar field. Gauge invariant Lagrangian with conventional kinetic terms and the corresponding gauge transformations are obtained. One of the rank-2 tensor fields and the scalar field have canonical conformal dimension. With respect to these fields, the Lagrangian contains, in addition to other terms, a cubic potential. Gauging away the Stueckelberg fields and excluding the auxiliary fields via equations of motion, the higher-derivative Lagrangian of 6d conformal gravity is obtained. The higher derivative Lagrangian involves quadratic and cubic curvature terms. This higher-derivative Lagrangian coincides with the simplest Weyl invariant density discussed in the earlier literature. Generalization of de Donder gauge conditions to 6d conformal fields is also obtained.

Ordinary-derivative formulation of conformal low-spin fields

Conformal fields in flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Second-derivative formulation for spin 0,1,2 conformal bosonic fields and first-derivative formulation for spin 1/2,3/2 conformal fermionic fields are developed. For the spin 1,3/2,2 conformal fields, we obtain gauge invariant Lagrangians and the corresponding gauge transformations. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving Stueckelberg fields and auxiliary fields. Realization of global conformal boost symmetries is obtained. Modified Lorentz and de Donder gauge conditions are introduced. Ordinary-derivative Lagrangian of interacting Weyl gravity in 4d is obtained. In our approach, the field content of Weyl gravity, in addition to conformal graviton field, includes one auxiliary rank-2 symmetric tensor field and one Stueckelberg vector field. With respect to the auxiliary tensor field, the Lagrangian contains, in addition to other terms, the Pauli-Fierz mass term. Using the ordinary-derivative Lagrangian of Weyl gravity, we discuss interrelation of Einstein AdS gravity and Weyl gravity via breaking conformal gauge symmetries. Also, we demonstrate use of the light-cone gauge for counting on-shell degrees of freedom in higher-derivative conformal field theories.

CFT adapted gauge invariant formulation of massive arbitrary spin fields in AdS

Using Poincare parametrization of AdS space, we study massive totally symmetric arbitrary spin fields in AdS space of dimension greater than or equal to four. CFT adapted gauge invariant formulation for such fields is developed. Gauge symmetries are realized by using Stueckelberg formulation of massive fields. We demonstrate that the mass parameter, curvature and radial coordinate contributions to the gauge transformation and Lagrangian of the AdS massive fields can be expressed in terms of ladder operators. Three representations for the Lagrangian are discussed. Realization of the global AdS symmetries in the conformal algebra basis is obtained. Modified de Donder gauge leading to simple gauge fixed Lagrangian is found. The modified de Donder gauge leads to decoupled equations of motion which can easily be solved in terms of the Bessel function. New simple representation for gauge invariant Lagrangian of massive (A)dS field in arbitrary coordinates is obtained. Light-cone gauge Lagrangian of massive AdS field is also presented.

Conformal self-dual fields in flat space-time of even dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Ordinary-derivative formulation of such fields is developed. Gauge invariant Lagrangian with conventional kinetic terms and corresponding gauge transformations are obtained. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving the Stueckelberg fields. Realization of global conformal symmetries is obtained. Light-cone gauge Lagrangian is found. Also, we demonstrate use of the light-cone gauge for counting of on-shell degrees of freedom of the conformal self-dual fields.

Gauge invariant approach to low-spin anomalous conformal currents and shadow fields

Conformal low-spin anomalous currents and shadow fields in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant formulation for such currents and shadow fields is developed. Gauge symmetries are realized by involving Stueckelberg and auxiliary fields. Gauge invariant differential constraints for anomalous currents and shadow fields and realization of global conformal symmetries are obtained. Gauge invariant two-point vertices for anomalous shadow fields are also obtained. In Stueckelberg gauge frame, these gauge invariant vertices become the standard two-point vertices of CFT. Light-cone gauge two-point vertices of the anomalous shadow fields are derived. AdS/CFT correspondence for anomalous currents and shadow fields and the respective normalizable and non-normalizable solutions of massive low-spin AdS fields is studied. The bulk fields are considered in modified de Donder gauge that leads to decoupled equations of motion. We demonstrate that leftover on-shell gauge symmetries of bulk massive fields correspond to gauge symmetries of boundary anomalous currents and shadow fields, while the modified (Lorentz) de Donder gauge conditions for bulk massive fields correspond to differential constraints for boundary anomalous currents and shadow fields.

Gauge invariant two-point vertices of shadow fields, AdS/CFT, and conformal fields

In the framework of gauge invariant Stueckelberg approach, totally symmetric arbitrary spin shadow fields in flat space-time of dimension greater than or equal to four are studied. Gauge invariant two-point vertices for such shadow fields are obtained. We demonstrate that, in Stueckelberg gauge frame, these gauge invariant vertices become the standard two-point vertices of CFT. Light-cone gauge two-point vertices of the shadow fields are also obtained. AdS/CFT correspondence for the shadow fields and the non-normalizable solutions of free massless totally symmetric arbitrary spin AdS fields is studied. AdS fields are considered in a modified de Donder gauge and this simplifies considerably the study of AdS/CFT correspondence. We demonstrate that the bulk action, when it is evaluated on solution of the Dirichlet problem, leads to the two-point gauge invariant vertex of shadow field. Also we shown that the bulk action evaluated on solution of the Dirichlet problem leads to new description of conformal fields. The new description involves Stueckelberg gauge symmetries and gives simple higher-derivative Lagrangian for the conformal arbitrary spin field. In the Stueckelberg gauge frame, our Lagrangian becomes the standard Lagrangian of conformal field. Light-cone gauge Lagrangian of the arbitrary spin conformal field is also obtained.

Massive totally symmetric fields in AdS(d)

Free totally symmetric arbitrary spin massive bosonic and fermionic fields propagating in AdS(d) are investigated. Using the light cone formulation of relativistic dynamics we study bosonic and fermionic fields on an equal footing. Light-cone gauge actions for such fields are constructed. Interrelation between the lowest eigenvalue of the energy operator and standard mass parameter for arbitrary type of symmetry massive field is derived.

How massless are massless fields in $AdS_d$

Massless fields of generic Young symmetry type in $AdS_d$ space are analyzed. It is demonstrated that in contrast to massless fields in Minkowski space whose physical degrees of freedom transform in irreps of $o(d-2)$ algebra, $AdS$ massless mixed symmetry fields reduce to a number of irreps of $o(d-2)$ algebra. From the field theory perspective this means that not every massless field in flat space admits a deformation to $AdS_d$ with the same number of degrees of freedom, because it is impossible to keep all of the flat space gauge symmetries unbroken in the AdS space. An equivalent statement is that, generic irreducible AdS massless fields reduce to certain reducible sets of massless fields in the flat limit. A conjecture on the general pattern of the flat space limit of a general $AdS_d$ massless field is made. The example of the three-cell ``hook'' Young diagram is discussed in detail. In particular, it is shown that only a combination of the three-cell flat-space field with a graviton-like field admits a smooth deformation to $AdS_d$.

Arbitrary spin massless bosonic fields in d-dimensional anti-de Sitter space

Arbitrary spin free massless bosonic fields propagating in even $d$ - dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime are investigated. Free wave equations of motion, subsidiary conditions and the corresponding gauge transformations for such fields are proposed. The lowest eigenvalues of the energy operator for the massless fields and the gauge parameter fields are derived. The results are formulated in $SO(d-1,2)$ covariant form as well as in terms of intrinsic coordinates. An inter-relation of two definitions of masslessness based on gauge invariance and conformal invariance is discussed.

Free totally (anti)symmetric massless fermionic fields in d-dimensional anti-de Sitter space

Free massless fermionic fields of arbitrary spins $s>0$ corresponding to totally (anti)symmetric tensor-spinor representations of the $SO(d-1)$ compact subgroup and in $d$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space are investigated. We propose the free equations of motion, subsidiary conditions and corresponding gauge transformations for such fields. The equations obtained are used to derive the lowest energy values for the above-mentioned representations. A new representation for equations of motion and gauge transformations in terms of generators of anti-de Sitter group $SO(d-1,2)$ is found. It is demonstrated that in contrast to the symmetric case the gauge parameter of the antisymmetric massless field is also a massless field.
