Unfolded Point Particle as a Field in Minkowski Space

Point-particle dynamics is reformulated as a field theory. This is achieved by using the unfolded dynamics approach that makes it possible to give dynamical interpretation to the concept of physical dimension which is 1 for a point particle in the $d$-dimensional space-time. The main idea for the description of a $k$-dimensional on-shell system in the $d$-dimensional space is to keep the evolution along $d-k$ dimensions off-shell or, alternatively, restrict it in a specific way respecting the compatibility conditions of the resulting unfolded system. The developed approach gives some hints how a non-linear realization of the symmetry $G$ of a larger-dimensional space in a lower-dimensional system can emerge from a geometrical realization on the fields in an appropriate $G$-invariant space. For the example of a relativistic point particle considered in this paper, $ G$ is the Poincare group. The proposed general scheme is illustrated by simple examples that reproduce conventional results.

On the variational principle in the unfolded dynamics

The interplay between off-shell and on-shell unfolded systems is analysed. The formulation of invariant constraints that put an off-shell system on shell is developed by adding new variables and derivation in the target space, that extends the original $Q$-derivation of the unfolded system to a bicomplex. The analogue of the Euler-Lagrange equations in the unfolded dynamics is suggested. The general class of invariant on-shell equation constraints is defined in cohomological terms. The necessary and sufficient condition for the on-shell equation constraints being Euler-Lagrange for some Lagrangian system is proven. The proposed construction is illustrated by the scalar field example.

Projectively-Compact Spinor Vertices and Space-Time Spin-Locality in Higher-Spin Theory

The concepts of compact and projectively-compact spin-local spinor vertices are introduced. Vertices of this type are shown to be space-time spin-local, i.e. their restriction to any finite subset of fields is space-time local. The known spinor spin-local cubic vertices with the minimal number of space-time derivatives are verified to be projectively-compact. This has the important consequence that spinor spin-locality of the respective quartic vertices would imply their space-time spin-locality. More generally, it is argued that the proper class of solutions of the non-linear higher-spin equations that leads to the minimally non-local (presumably space-time spin-local) vertices is represented by the projectively-compact vertices. The related aspects of the higher-spin holographic correspondence are briefly discussed.

Homotopy Properties and Lower-Order Vertices in Higher-Spin Equations

New homotopy approach to the analysis of nonlinear higher-spin equations is developed. It is shown to directly reproduce the previously obtained local vertices. Simplest cubic (quartic in Lagrangian nomenclature) higher-spin interaction vertices in four dimensional theory are examined from locality perspective by the new approach and shown to be local. The results are obtained in a background independent fashion.

Spin-Locality of $η^2$ and $\barη^2$ Quartic Higher-Spin Vertices

Higher-spin theory contains a complex coupling parameter $η$. Different higher-spin vertices are associated with different powers of $η$ and its complex conjugate $\bar η$. Using $Z$-dominance Lemma, that controls spin-locality of the higher-spin equations, we show that the third-order contribution to the zero-form $B(Z;Y;K)$ admits a $Z$-dominated form that leads to spin-local vertices in the $η^2$ and $\bar η^2$ sectors of the higher-spin equations. These vertices include, in particular, the $η^2$ and $\bar η^2$ parts of the $ϕ^4$ scalar field vertex.

Limiting Shifted Homotopy in Higher-Spin Theory and Spin-Locality

Higher-spin vertices containing up to quintic interactions at the Lagrangian level are explicitly calculated in the one-form sector of the non-linear unfolded higher-spin equations using a $β\to-\infty$--shifted contracting homotopy introduced in the paper. The problem is solved in a background independent way and for any value of the complex parameter $η$ in the HS equations. All obtained vertices are shown to be spin-local containing a finite number of derivatives in the spinor space for any given set of spins. The vertices proportional to $η^2$ and $\bar η^2$ are in addition ultra-local, i.e. zero-forms that enter into the vertex in question are free from the dependence on at least one of the spinor variables $y$ or $\bar y$. Also the $η^2$ and $\bar η^2$ vertices are shown to vanish on any purely gravitational background hence not contributing to the higher-spin current interactions on $AdS_4$. This implies in particular that the gravitational constant in front of the stress tensor is positive being proportional to $η\bar η$. It is shown that the $β$-shifted homotopy technique developed in this paper can be reinterpreted as the conventional one but in the $β$-dependent deformed star product.

Nonlinear higher spin theories in various dimensions

In this article, an introduction to the nonlinear equations for completely symmetric bosonic higher spin gauge fields in anti de Sitter space of any dimension is provided. To make the presentation self-contained we explain in detail some related issues such as the MacDowell-Mansouri-Stelle-West formulation of gravity, unfolded formulation of dynamical systems in terms of free differential algebras and Young tableaux symmetry properties in terms of Howe dual algebras.

Spin-Locality of Higher-Spin Theories and Star-Product Functional Classes

The analysis of spin-locality of higher-spin gauge theory is formulated in terms of star-product functional classes appropriate for the $β\to -\infty$ limiting shifted homotopy proposed recently in arXiv:1909.04876 where all $ω^2 C^2$ higher-spin vertices were shown to be spin-local. For the $β\to -\infty$ limiting shifted contracting homotopy we identify the class of functions ${\mathcal H}^{+0}$, that do not contribute to the r.h.s. of HS field equations at a given order. A number of theorems and relations that organize analysis of the higher-spin equations are derived including extension of the Pfaffian Locality Theorem of arXiv:1805.11941 to the $β$-shifted contracting homotopy and the relation underlying locality of the $ω^2 C^2$ sector of higher-spin equations. Space-time interpretation of spin-locality of theories involving infinite towers of fields is proposed as the property that the theory is space-time local in terms of original constituent fields $Φ$ and their local currents $J(Φ)$ of all ranks. Spin-locality is argued to be a proper substitute of locality for theories with finite sets of fields for which the two concepts are equivalent.

Scattering amplitudes as multi-particle higher-spin charges in the correspondence space

Following the proposal of arXiv:1312.6673, multi-particle scattering amplitudes are represented as conserved higher-spin charges. The advantage of such reformulation is that multi-particle amplitudes acquire the form of an integral of a closed form in the correspondence unifying usual space-time with the twistor-like spinor space. This allows one to identify seemingly different formulae for amplitudes in terms of twistor and space-time integrals. Example of tree MHV amplitudes of Yang-Mills theory is considered in detail. Our results are derived using unfolded dynamics formulation of massless fields. In these terms all information on the amplitude is contained in a single function $η$ that, even for lower spin amplitudes, can be interpreted as a higher-spin symmetry parameter. The proposed technique can be useful to relate different approaches to amplitude calculations.

Higher-Rank Fields and Currents

$Sp(2M)$ invariant field equations in the space ${\cal M}_M$ with symmetric matrix coordinates are classified. Analogous results are obtained for Minkowski-like subspaces of ${\cal M}_M$ which include usual $4d$ Minkowski space as a particular case. The constructed equations are associated with the tensor products of the Fock (singleton) representation of $Sp(2M)$ of any rank ${\mathbf{r }}$. The infinite set of higher-spin conserved currents multilinear in rank-one fields in ${\cal M}_M$ is found. The associated conserved charges are supported by $({\mathbf{r }} M-\frac{\mathbf{r } ({\mathbf{r }} -1)}{2})-$dimensional differential forms in ${\cal M}_M$, that are closed by virtue of the rank-$2{\mathbf{r }}$ field equations. The cohomology groups $H^p(σ^{\mathbf{r }}_-)$ with all $p$ and ${\mathbf{r }}$, which determine the form of appropriate gauge fields and their field equations, are found both for ${\cal M}_M$ and for its Minkowski-like subspace.

Perturbative analysis in higher-spin theories

A new scheme of the perturbative analysis of the nonlinear HS equations is developed giving directly the final result for the successive application of the homotopy integrations which appear in the standard approach. It drastically simplifies the analysis and results from the application of the standard spectral sequence approach to the higher-spin covariant derivatives, allowing us in particular to reduce multiple homotopy integrals resulting from the successive application of the homotopy trick to a single integral. Efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated by various examples. In particular, it is shown how the Central on-shell theorem of the free theory immediately results from the nonlinear HS field equations with no intermediate computations.

Gauge Non-Invariant Higher-Spin Currents in $4d$ Minkowski Space

Conserved currents of any spin $t>0$ built from symmetric massless gauge fields of any integer spin $s \geq t$ in {4d} Minkowski space are found. In particular, stress-energy tensor for a higher-spin field of any spin is constructed. Analogously to spin-two stress (pseudo)tensor, currents considered in this paper are not gauge invariant. However, they are shown to generate gauge invariant conserved charges. Besides expected parity even HS currents, we found unexpected parity odd currents that generate less symmetries than the even ones. It is argued that these odd currents unlikely admit a consistent $AdS$ deformation.

Star-Product Functions in Higher-Spin Theory and Locality

Properties of the functional classes of star-product elements associated with higher-spin gauge fields and gauge parameters are elaborated. Cohomological interpretation of the nonlinear higher-spin equations is given. An algebra ${\mathcal H}$, where solutions of the nonlinear higher-spin equations are valued, is found. A conjecture on the classes of star-product functions underlying (non)local maps and gauge transformations in the nonlinear higher-spin theory is proposed.

Unfolded Equations for Current Interactions of 4d Massless Fields as a Free System in Mixed Dimensions

Interactions of massless fields of all spins in four dimensions with currents of any spin is shown to result from a solution of the linear problem that describes a gluing between rank-one (massless) system and rank-two (current) system in the unfolded dynamics approach. Since the rank-two system is dual to a free rank-one higher-dimensional system, that effectively describes conformal fields in six space-time dimensions, the constructed system can be interpreted as describing a mixture between linear conformal fields in four and six dimensions. Interpretation of the obtained results in spirit of AdS/CFT correspondence is discussed.

Higher-Spin Theory and Space-Time Metamorphoses

Introductory lectures on higher-spin gauge theory given at 7 Aegean workshop on non-Einstein theories of gravity. The emphasis is on qualitative features of the higher-spin gauge theory and peculiarities of its space-time interpretation. In particular, it is explained that Riemannian geometry cannot play a fundamental role in the higher-spin gauge theory. The higher-spin symmetries are argued to occur at ultra high energy scales beyond the Planck scale. This suggests that the higher-spin gauge theory can help to understand Quantum Gravity. Various types of higher-spin dualities are briefly discussed.

Off-Shell Scalar Supermultiplet in the Unfolded Dynamics Approach

We show how manifestly supersymmetric action for Wess-Zumino model can be constructed within the unfolded dynamics approach. The off-shell unfolded system for N = 1, D = 4 scalar supermultiplet is found. The action is presented in the form of integral of a closed 4-form over any (4, 0) surface in superspace as well as a superspace integral of an integral form or a chiral integral form. The proposed method is argued to provide a most general tool for the analysis of manifestly supersymmetric functionals.

Multiparticle extension of the higher-spin algebra

Multiparticle extension of a higher-spin algebra $l$ is introduced as the Lie superalgebra associated with the universal enveloping algebra $U(l)$. While conventional higher-spin symmetry does not mix $n$-particle states with different $n$, multiparticle symmetries do so. Quotients of multiparticle algebras are considered, that act on the space of $n$-particle states with $0\leq n\leq k$ analogous to the space of first $k$ Regge trajectories of String Theory. Original higher-spin algebra is reproduced at $k=1$. Full multiparticle algebras are conjectured to describe vacuum symmetries of string-like extensions of higher-spin gauge theories. Relation of the multiparticle algebras with 3d current operator algebras is described. The central charge parameter, to be related to the parameter ${\mathcal N}$ in $AdS/CFT$ correspondence, enters via the definition of supertrace. Extension to higher $p$-brane-like symmetries is introduced inductively.

Operator algebra of free conformal currents via twistors

Operator algebra of (not necessarily free) higher-spin conformal conserved currents in generalized matrix spaces, that include 3d Minkowski space-time as a particular case, is shown to be determined by an associative algebra $M$ of functions on the twistor space. For free conserved currents, $M$ is the universal enveloping algebra of the higher-spin algebra. Proposed construction greatly simplifies computation and analysis of correlators of conserved currents. Generating function for $n$-point functions of 3d (super)currents of all spins, built from $N$ free constituent massless scalars and spinors, is obtained in a concise form of certain determinant. Our results agree with and extend earlier bulk computations in the HS $AdS_4/CFT_3$ framework. Generating function for $n$-point functions of 4d conformal currents is also presented.

Unfolded Scalar Supermultiplet

Unfolded equations of motion for N = 1, D = 4 scalar supermultiplet are presented. We show how the superspace formulation emerges from the unfolded formulation. To analyze supersymmetric unfolded equations we extend the σ_-cohomology technics to the case with several operators σ_. The role of higher σ_-cohomology in the derivation of constraints is emphasized and illustrated by the example of scalar supermultiplet.

A New Natural Gamma Radiation Measurement System for Marine Sediment and Rock Analysis

A new high-efficiency and low-background system for the measurement of natural gamma radioactivity in marine sediment and rock cores retrieved from beneath the seabed was designed, built, and installed on the JOIDES Resolution research vessel. The system includes eight large NaI(Tl) detectors that measure adjacent intervals of the core simultaneously, maximizing counting times and minimizing statistical error for the limited measurement times available during drilling expeditions. Effect to background ratio is maximized with passive lead shielding, including both ordinary and low-activity lead. Large-area plastic scintillator active shielding filters background associated with the high-energy part of cosmic radiation. The new system has at least an order of magnitude higher statistical reliability and significantly enhances data quality compared to other offshore natural gamma radiation (NGR) systems designed to measure geological core samples. Reliable correlations and interpretations of cored intervals are possible at rates of a few counts per second.

Unfolding versus BRST and currents in Sp(2M) invariant higher-spin theory

The correspondence between BRST and unfolded formulations of field equations on group manifolds and homogeneous spaces is described. The previously introduced nonstandard BRST operator, that underlies Sp(2M) invariant higher-spin field equations, is shown to admit a natural oscillator-like realization. The coordinate independent form of conserved currents in the Sp(2M) invariant higher-spin theory is derived from the BRST formulation on Sp(2M) extended by the Heisenberg group.

Bosonic conformal higher--spin fields of any symmetry

Free Lagrangians are found both for gauge and non-gauge bosonic conformal fields of any symmetry type and in any space-time dimension. Conformal gauge fields of various types, their gauge transformations and gauge invariant field strengths (generalized Weyl tensors), which are derived by the $σ_-$ cohomology technics in the frame-like formulation, are shown to correspond to supersymmetric vacua of certain supersymmetric matrix mechanics. The correspondence between conformal and $AdS_d$ higher-spin models, that turn out to have identical generalized Weyl tensors, is discussed.

Measurement of P_{mu}xi in Polarized Muon Decay

The quantity P_{mu}^{pi}xi, where xi is one of the muon decay parameters and $P_μ^π$ is the degree of muon polarization in pion decay, has been measured. The value P_{mu}^{pi}xi = 1.0003 +- 0.0006 stat. +- 0.0038 syst. was obtained. This result agrees with previous measurements but is over a factor of two more precise. It also agrees with the Standard Model prediction for P_{mu}^{pi}xi and thus leads to restrictions on left-right symmetric models.

Cubic Interactions of Bosonic Higher Spin Gauge Fields in $AdS_5$

The dynamics of totally symmetric free massless higher spin fields in $AdS_d$ is reformulated in terms of the compensator formalism for AdS gravity. The $AdS_5$ higher spin algebra is identified with the star product algebra with the $su(2,2)$ vector (i.e., $o(4,2)$ spinor) generating elements. Cubic interactions of the totally symmetric bosonic higher spin gauge fields in $AdS_5$, including the interaction with gravity, are formulated at the action level.

Absolute Drell-Yan Dimuon Cross Sections in 800 GeV/c pp and pd Collisions

The Fermilab E866/NuSea Collaboration has measured the Drell-Yan dimuon cross sections in 800 GeV/$c$ $pp$ and $pd$ collisions. This represents the first measurement of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pp$ collisions over a broad kinematic region and the most extensive study to date of the Drell-Yan cross section in $pd$ collisions. The results indicate that recent global parton distribution fits provide a good description of the light antiquark sea in the nucleon over the Bjorken-$x$ range $0.03 \lesssim x < 0.15$, but overestimate the valence quark distributions as $x \to 1$.

On the Frame-Like Formulation of Mixed-Symmetry Massless Fields in (A)dS(d)

The frame-like covariant Lagrangian formulation of bosonic and fermionic mixed-symmetry type higher spin massless fields propagating on the AdS(d) background is proposed. Higher spin fields are described in terms of gauge p-forms which carry tangent indices representing certain traceless tensor or gamma transversal spinor-tensor representations of the AdS(d) algebra o(d-1,2) (or o(d,1) for bosonic fields in dS(d)). Manifestly gauge invariant Abelian higher spin field strengths are introduced for the general case. We describe the general framework and demonstrate how it works for the mixed-symmetry type fields associated with the three-cell "hook" and arbitrary two-row rectangular tableaux. The manifestly gauge invariant actions for these fields are presented in a simple form. The flat limit is also analyzed.

Conformal Higher Spin Symmetries of 4d Massless Supermultiplets and $osp(L,2M)$ Invariant Equations in Generalized (Super)Space

Realization of the conformal higher spin symmetry on the 4d massless field supermultiplets is given. The self-conjugated supermultiplets, including the linearized ${\cal N}=4$ SYM theory, are considered in some detail. Duality between non-unitary field-theoretical representations and the unitary doubleton--type representations of the 4d conformal algebra $su(2,2)$ is formulated in terms of a Bogolyubov transform. The set of 4d massless fields of all spins is shown to form a representation of $sp(8)$. The obtained results are extended to the generalized superspace invariant under $osp(L, 2M)$ supersymmetries. World line particle interpretation of the free higher spin theories in the $osp(2\N, 2M)$ invariant (super)space is given. Compatible with unitarity free equations of motion in the $osp(L,2M)$ invariant (super)space are formulated. A conjecture on the chain of $AdS_{d+1}/CFT_d \to AdS_{d}/CFT_{d-1} \to ...$ dualities in the higher spin gauge theories is proposed.

Relativity, Causality, Locality, Quantization and Duality in the $Sp(2M)$ Invariant Generalized Space-Time

We analyze properties of the Sp(2M) conformally invariant field equations in the recently proposed generalized $\half M(M+1)$-dimensional space-time $\M_M$ with matrix coordinates. It is shown that classical solutions of these field equations define a causal structure in $\M_M$ and admit a well-defined decomposition into positive and negative frequency solutions that allows consistent quantization in a positive definite Hilbert space. The effect of constraints on the localizability of fields in the generalized space-time is analyzed. Usual d-dimensional Minkowski space-time is identified with the subspace of the matrix space $\M_M$ that allows true localization of the dynamical fields. Minkowski coordinates are argued to be associated with some Clifford algebra in the matrix space $\M_M$. The dynamics of a conformal scalar and spinor in $\M_2$ and $\M_4$ is shown to be equivalent, respectively, to the usual conformal field dynamics of a scalar and spinor in the 3d Minkowski space-time and the dynamics of massless fields of all spins in the 4d Minkowski space-time. An extension of the electro-magnetic duality transformations to all spins is identified with a particular generalized Lorentz transformation in $\M_4$. The M=8 case is shown to correspond to a 6d chiral higher spin theory. The cases of M=16 (d=10) and M=32 (d=11) are discussed briefly.

How massless are massless fields in $AdS_d$

Massless fields of generic Young symmetry type in $AdS_d$ space are analyzed. It is demonstrated that in contrast to massless fields in Minkowski space whose physical degrees of freedom transform in irreps of $o(d-2)$ algebra, $AdS$ massless mixed symmetry fields reduce to a number of irreps of $o(d-2)$ algebra. From the field theory perspective this means that not every massless field in flat space admits a deformation to $AdS_d$ with the same number of degrees of freedom, because it is impossible to keep all of the flat space gauge symmetries unbroken in the AdS space. An equivalent statement is that, generic irreducible AdS massless fields reduce to certain reducible sets of massless fields in the flat limit. A conjecture on the general pattern of the flat space limit of a general $AdS_d$ massless field is made. The example of the three-cell ``hook'' Young diagram is discussed in detail. In particular, it is shown that only a combination of the three-cell flat-space field with a graviton-like field admits a smooth deformation to $AdS_d$.
