Angular analysis of D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays and search for CPCP violation

The first full angular analysis and an updated measurement of the decay-rate CPCP asymmetry of the D0→π+π−μ+μ−D^0 \to π^+π^-μ^+μ^- and D0→K+K−μ+μ−D^0 \to K^+K^-μ^+μ^- decays are reported. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. The full set of CPCP-averaged angular observables and their CPCP asymmetries are measured as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with expectations from the standard model and with CPCP symmetry.

Constraints on the CKM angle γγ from B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays using D→h±h′∓π0D\rightarrow h^\pm h^{\prime\mp}π^0 final states

A data sample collected with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1} is used to measure eleven CPCP violation observables in B±→Dh±B^\pm\to Dh^\pm decays, where hh is either a kaon or a pion. The neutral DD meson decay is reconstructed in the three-body final states: K±π∓π0K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0}; π+π−π0π^+π^-π^0; K+K−π0K^+K^-π^0 and the suppressed π±K∓π0π^\pm K^\mpπ^0 combination. The mode where a large CPCP asymmetry is expected, B±→[π±K∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [π^\pm K^\mpπ^0]_DK^\pm, is observed with a significance greater than seven standard deviations. The ratio of the partial width of this mode relative to that of the favoured mode, B±→[K±π∓π0]DK±B^\pm\to [K^\pmπ^\mpπ^0]_D K^\pm, is RADS(K)=(1.27±0.16±0.02)×10−2R_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = (1.27\pm0.16\pm0.02)\times 10^{-2}. Evidence for a large CPCP asymmetry is also seen: AADS(K)=−0.38±0.12±0.02A_{{\rm ADS}(K)} = -0.38\pm0.12\pm0.02. Constraints on the CKM angle γγ are calculated from the eleven reported observables.

First measurement of the Z→μ+μ−Z\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- angular coefficients in the forward region of pppp collisions at s=13\sqrt{s}=13 TeV

The first study of the angular distribution of μ+μ−μ^+ μ^- pairs produced in the forward rapidity region via the Drell-Yan reaction pp→γ∗/Z+X→l+l−+Xpp \rightarrow γ^{*}/Z +X \rightarrow l^+ l^- + X is presented, using data collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb−1\rm{fb}^{-1}. The coefficients of the five leading terms in the angular distribution are determined as a function of the dimuon transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared to various theoretical predictions of the ZZ-boson production mechanism and can also be used to probe transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions within the proton.

Measurement of the charm mixing parameter yCP−yCPKπy_{CP} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} using two-body D0D^0 meson decays

A measurement of the ratios of the effective decay widths of D0→π−π+D^0 \to π^-π^+ and D0→K−K+D^0 \to K^-K^+ decays over that of D0→K−π+D^0 \to K^-π^+ decays is performed with the LHCb experiment using proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13 \, \mathrm{TeV}, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6 fb−16 \, \mathrm{fb^{-1}}. These observables give access to the charm mixing parameters yCPππ−yCPKπy_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} and yCPKK−yCPKπy_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ}, and are measured as yCPππ−yCPKπ=(6.57±0.53±0.16)×10−3y_{CP}^{ππ} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.57 \pm 0.53 \pm 0.16) \times 10^{-3}, yCPKK−yCPKπ=(7.08±0.30±0.14)×10−3y_{CP}^{KK} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (7.08 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-3}, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The combination of the two measurements is yCP−yCPKπ=(6.96±0.26±0.13)×10−3y_{CP} - y_{CP}^{Kπ} = (6.96 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.13) \times 10^{-3}, which is four times more precise than the previous world average.

Observation of Λb0→D+pπ−π−Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^+ p π^-π^- and Λb0→D∗+pπ−π−Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^{*+} p π^-π^- decays

The multihadron decays Λb0→D+pπ−π−Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^+ p π^-π^- and Λb0→D∗+pπ−π−Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^{*+} p π^-π^- are observed in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb−1^{-1}, collected in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8TeV by the LHCb detector. Using the~decay Λb0→Λc+π+π−π−Λ_b^0\rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^+ π^-π^- as a normalisation channel, the ratio of branching fractions is measured to be B(Λb0→D+pπ−π−)B(Λb0→Λc+π+π−π−)×B(D+→K−π+π+)B(Λc+→pK−π+)=(5.35±0.21±0.16)% , \frac { {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^+ p π^-π^- ) } { {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_b^0\rightarrow Λ_c^+ π^+ π^-π^- ) } \times \frac { {\mathcal{B}} ( D^+ \rightarrow K^-π^+π^+) } { {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_c^+ \rightarrow p K^-π^+ ) } = ( 5.35 \pm 0.21 \pm 0.16 ) \% \,, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The ratio of branching fractions for Λb0→D∗+pπ−π−Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^{*+} p π^-π^- and Λb0→D+pπ−π−Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^+ p π^-π^- decays is found to be B(Λb0→D∗+pπ−π−)B(Λb0→D+pπ−π−)×(B(D∗+→π0)+B(D∗+→γ))=(61.3±4.3±4.0)% . \frac{ {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^{*+} p π^-π^- )} { {\mathcal{B}} ( Λ_b^0\rightarrow D^{+} p π^-π^- )} \times ( {\mathcal{B}}( D^{*+} \rightarrow π^0 ) + {\mathcal{B}}( D^{*+} \rightarrow γ)) = ( 61.3 \pm 4.3 \pm 4.0 ) \% \,.

Observation of the B0→D‾∗0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*0}K^{-}π^{+} decays

The first observations of B0→D‾∗(2007)0K+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{+}π^{-} and Bs0→D‾∗(2007)0K−π+B_s^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}K^{-}π^{+} decays are presented, and their branching fractions relative to that of the B0→D‾∗(2007)0π+π−B^0\rightarrow\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0}π^{+}π^{-} decay are reported. These modes can potentially be used to investigate the spectroscopy of charm and charm-strange resonances and to determine the angle γγ of the CKM unitarity triangle. It is also important to understand them as a source of potential background in determinations of γγ from B+→DK+B^{+}\rightarrow DK^{+} and B0→DK+π−B^{0}\rightarrow DK^{+}π^{-} decays. The analysis is based on a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4 ~\rm{fb}^{-1} of proton--proton collision data at 13 TeV13 ~\rm{TeV} centre-of-mass energy recorded with the LHCb detector. The D‾∗(2007)0\overline{D}^{*}(2007)^{0} mesons are fully reconstructed in the D‾0π0\overline{D}^{0}π^{0} and D‾0γ\overline{D}^{0}γ channels, with the D‾0→K+π−\overline{D}^{0} \rightarrow K^{+}π^{-} decay. A novel weighting method is used to subtract background while simultaneously applying an event-by-event efficiency correction to account for resonant structures in the decays.

The Ξcc++→Ξc′+π+\it{Ξ_{cc}^{++}\to Ξ_{c}^{'+}π^{+}} decay is observed using proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV13\mathrm{\,Te\kern -0.1em V}, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb−15.4\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}. The Ξcc++→Ξc′+π+\it{Ξ_{cc}^{++}\to Ξ_{c}^{'+}π^{+}} decay is reconstructed partially, where the photon from the Ξc′+→Ξc+γ\it{Ξ_{c}^{'+} \to Ξ_{c}^{+}γ} decay is not reconstructed and the pK−π+pK^-π^+ final state of the Ξc+\it{Ξ_{c}^{+}} baryon is employed. The Ξcc++→Ξc′+π+\it{Ξ_{cc}^{++}\to Ξ_{c}^{'+}π^{+}} branching fraction relative to that of the Ξcc++→Ξc+π+\it{Ξ_{cc}^{++}\to Ξ_{c}^{+}π^{+}} decay is measured to be 1.41±0.17±0.101.41 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.10, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Precision measurement of forward ZZ boson production in proton-proton collisions at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV

A precision measurement of the ZZ boson production cross-section at s=13\sqrt{s} = 13 TeV in the forward region is presented, using pppp collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 fb−1^{-1}. The production cross-section is measured using Z→μ+μ−Z\rightarrowμ^+μ^- events within the fiducial region defined as pseudorapidity 2.0<η<4.52.0<η<4.5 and transverse momentum pT>20p_{T}>20 GeV/cc for both muons and dimuon invariant mass 60<Mμμ<12060<M_{μμ}<120 GeV/c2c^2. The integrated cross-section is determined to be \begin{equation*} σ(Z\rightarrowμ^+μ^-) = 196.4 \pm 0.2 \pm 1.6 \pm 3.9~pb, \end{equation*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is due to the luminosity determination. The measured results are in agreement with theoretical predictions within uncertainties.

Progress report on the online processing upgrade at the NA62 experiment

A new FPGA-based low-level trigger processor has been installed at the NA62 experiment. It is intended to extend the features of its predecessor due to a faster interconnection technology and additional logic resources available on the new platform. With the aim of improving trigger selectivity and exploring new architectures for complex trigger computation, a GPU system has been developed and a neural network on FPGA is in progress. They both process data streams from the Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector of the experiment to extract in real time high level features for the trigger logic. Description of the systems, latest developments and design flows are reported in this paper.

Search for the decay B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\toϕμ^+μ^-

A search for the decay B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\toϕμ^+μ^- is performed using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. No evidence for the B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\to ϕμ^+ μ^- decay is found and an upper limit on the branching fraction, excluding the ϕϕ and charmonium regions in the dimuon spectrum, of 4.4×10−34.4 \times 10^{-3} at a 90%\% credibility level, relative to that of the Bs0→ϕμ+μ−B^0_s \to ϕμ^+ μ^- decay, is established. Using the measured Bs0→ϕμ+μ−B^0_s\toϕμ^+μ^- branching fraction and assuming a phase-space model, the absolute branching fraction of the decay B0→ϕμ+μ−B^0\to ϕμ^+ μ^- in the full q2q^2 range is determined to be less than 3.2×10−93.2 \times 10^{-9} at a 90%\% credibility level.

Study of charmonium and charmonium-like contributions in B+→J/ψηK+B^+ \rightarrow J/ψηK^+ decays

A study of B+→J/ψηK+B^+ \rightarrow J/ψηK^+ decays, followed by J/ψ→μ+μ−J/ψ\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- and η→γγη\rightarrow γγ, is performed using a dataset collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb−1^{-1}. The J/ψηJ/ψη mass spectrum is investigated for contributions from charmonia and charmonium-like states. Evidence is found for the B+→(ψ2(3823)→J/ψη)K+B^+\rightarrow \left( ψ_2(3823) \rightarrow J/ψη\right) K^+ and B+→(ψ(4040)→J/ψη)K+B^+\rightarrow \left( ψ(4040) \rightarrow J/ψη\right) K^+ decays with significance of 3.4 and 4.7~standard deviations, respectively. This constitutes the~first~evidence for the ψ2(3823)→J/ψηψ_2(3823) \rightarrow J/ψη decay.

ChPT tests at the NA48 and NA62 experiments at CERN

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4 modes: Ke4(+-) (K±→π+π−e±νK^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm ν) and Ke4(00) (K±→π0π0e±νK^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm ν) with nearly one percent background contamination. The detailed study of form factors and branching rates, based on these data, has been completed recently. The results brings new inputs to low energy strong interactions description and tests of Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) and lattice QCD calculations. In particular, new data support the ChPT prediction for a cusp in the π0π0π^0π^0 invariant mass spectrum at the two charged pions threshold for Ke4(00) decay. New final results from an analysis of about 400 K±→π±γγK^\pm \to π^\pm γγ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN during low intensity runs with minimum bias trigger configurations are presented. The results include a model-independent decay rate measurement and fits to ChPT description.

GPU-based Real-time Triggering in the NA62 Experiment

Over the last few years the GPGPU (General-Purpose computing on Graphics Processing Units) paradigm represented a remarkable development in the world of computing. Computing for High-Energy Physics is no exception: several works have demonstrated the effectiveness of the integration of GPU-based systems in high level trigger of different experiments. On the other hand the use of GPUs in the low level trigger systems, characterized by stringent real-time constraints, such as tight time budget and high throughput, poses several challenges. In this paper we focus on the low level trigger in the CERN NA62 experiment, investigating the use of real-time computing on GPUs in this synchronous system. Our approach aimed at harvesting the GPU computing power to build in real-time refined physics-related trigger primitives for the RICH detector, as the the knowledge of Cerenkov rings parameters allows to build stringent conditions for data selection at trigger level. Latencies of all components of the trigger chain have been analyzed, pointing out that networking is the most critical one. To keep the latency of data transfer task under control, we devised NaNet, an FPGA-based PCIe Network Interface Card (NIC) with GPUDirect capabilities. For the processing task, we developed specific multiple ring trigger algorithms to leverage the parallel architecture of GPUs and increase the processing throughput to keep up with the high event rate. Results obtained during the first months of 2016 NA62 run are presented and discussed.

Recent NA48/2 and NA62 results

The NA48/2 Collaboration at CERN has accumulated and analysed unprecedented statistics of rare kaon decays in the Ke4K_{e4} modes: Ke4(+−)K_{e4}(+-) (K±→π+π−e±νK^\pm \to π^+ π^- e^\pm ν) and Ke4(00)K_{e4}(00) (K±→π0π0e±νK^\pm \to π^0 π^0 e^\pm ν) with nearly one percent background contamination. It leads to the improved measurement of branching fractions and detailed form factor studies. New final results from the analysis of 381 K±→π±γγK^\pm \to π^\pm γγ rare decay candidates collected by the NA48/2 and NA62 experiments at CERN are presented. The results include a decay rate measurement and fits to Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) description.
