Discrete and Continuous Symmetry Transformation Operators and Their Algebraic Structures: A $3D$ Field-Theoretic System

We discuss the discrete as well as the continuous symmetry transformations for a three $(2+1)$-dimensional $(3D)$ combined system of the free Abelian 1-form and 2-form gauge theories within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism and establish their relevance in the context of the algebraic structures that are obeyed by the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. In fact, our present field-theoretic system respects six continuous symmetry transformations and a couple of very useful discrete duality symmetry transformations. Out of the above six continuous symmetry transformations four are off-shell nilpotent (i.e. fermionic) in nature and two are bosonic. The algebraic structures, obeyed by the symmetry operators, are reminiscent of the algebra satisfied by the de Rham cohomological operators. Hence, our present $3D$ field-theoretic system provides a perfect example for Hodge theory where there is convergence of ideas from the physical aspects of the BRST formalism and mathematical ingredients that are connected with the cohomological operators of differential geometry at the algebraic level. One of the highlights of our present investigation is the appearance of a pseudo-scalar field in our theory (on the symmetry ground alone) which carries the negative kinetic term. Thus, it is one of the possible candidates for the ``phantom" fields of the cyclic, bouncing and self-accelerated cosmological models of the Universe.

Nilpotency Property, Physicality Criteria, Constraints and Standard BRST Algebra: A 4D Field-Theoretic System

Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we discuss the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST and the bosonic ghost-scale symmetries of a set of coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangian densities for the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) combined field-theoretic system of the free Abelian 3-form and 1-form gauge theories. We demonstrate that the Noether (anti-)BRST charges are non-nilpotent due to the presence of a set of non-trivial Curci-Ferrari (CF) type restrictions on our theory. These CF-type restrictions are derived and discussed from different theoretical angles in our present endeavor. In addition to it, we obtain the nilpotent versions of the above (anti-)BRST charges from their counterparts non-nilpotent versions and discuss the physicality criteria w.r.t. the nilpotent charges to show that the physical states (existing in the total quantum Hilbert space of states) are those that are annihilated by the operator forms of the first-class constraints of our classical 4D combined field-theoretic system. The standard BRST algebra among the nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges and the bosonic ghost charge is derived, too.

Nilpotent Symmetries of a Model of 2D Diffeomorphism Invariant Theory: BRST Approach

Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we discuss the full set of proper BRST and anti-BRST transformations for a 2D diffeomorphism invariant theory which is described by the Lagrangian density of a standard bosonic string. The above (anti-)BRST transformations are off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting. The latter property is valid on a submanifold of the space of the quantum fields where the 2D version of the universal (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF) type of restrictions are satisfied. We derive the precise forms of the BRST and anti-BRST invariant Lagrangian densities as well as the exact expressions for the conserved (anti-)BRST and ghost charges. The lucid derivation of the proper anti-BRST symmetry transformations and the emergence of the CF-type restrictions are completely novel results for our present bosonic string which has already been discussed earlier in literature where only the BRST symmetry transformations have been pointed out. We briefly mention the derivation of the CF-type restrictions from the modified version of Bonora-Tonin superfield approach, too.

Nilpotent Symmetries of a Modified Massive Abelian 3-Form Theory: Augmented Superfield Approach

We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for any arbitrary D-dimensional St$\ddot u$ckelberg-modified massive Abelian 3-form theory within the framework of augmented version of superfield approach (AVSA) to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism where, in addition to the horizontality condition (HC), we exploit the theoretical strength of the gauge invariant restriction (GIR) to deduce the proper transformations for the gauge, associated (anti-)ghost fields, auxiliary fields, St$\ddot u$ckelberg compensating field, etc. In fact, it is an elegant and delicate combination of HC and GIR (within the ambit of AVSA) that is crucial for all our discussions and derivations. One of the highlights of our present endeavor is the deduction of a new set of (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restrictions which are not found in the massless version of our present theory where only the HC plays an important role in the derivation of all the (anti-)BRST transformations and a very specific set of CF-type restrictions. The alternative ways of the derivation of the full set of the latter, from various theoretical considerations, are also interesting results of our present investigation.

Superfield Approaches to a Model of Bosonic String: Curci-Ferrari Type Restrictions

Exploiting the theoretical potential of the modified Bonora-Tonin superfield approach (MBTSA) as well as the (anti-)chiral superfield approach (ACSA) to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we derive the complete set of off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to the classical two $(1 + 1)$-dimensional (2D) diffeomorphism symmetry transformations on the world-sheet (that is traced out by the motion of a model of bosonic string). Only the BRST symmetry transformations for this model have been discussed in the earlier literature. We derive the (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF) type restrictions (using MBTSA) which turn out to be the root-cause behind the absolute anticommutativity of the above (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations. We capture the symmetry invariance of the (anti-)BRST invariant Lagrangian densities within the ambit of ACSA. The derivation of the proper anti-BRST transformations (corresponding to the already known BRST transformations) and the (anti-)BRST invariant CF-type restrictions are the novel results in our present endeavor.

A Massive Field-Theoretic Model for Hodge Theory

Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we show that the four $(3+1)$-dimensional (4D) massive Abelian 2-form gauge theory (without any interaction with matter fields) is a model for the Hodge theory because its discrete and continuous symmetry transformations (and their corresponding Noether conserved charges) provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry at the algebraic level. For this purpose, we incorporate the pseudo-scalar and axial-vector fields which appear in the theory with negative kinetic terms (but with proper definition of mass). The negative kinetic terms, for the above fields, are essential so that our theory could respect the discrete symmetry transformations which provide the physical realizations of the Hodge duality operation in the domain of differential geometry. Thus, our present endeavour, not only provides the physical realizations of all the mathematical ingredients connected with the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry, it also sheds light on the existence and emergence of fields with negative kinetic terms. We discuss the implications and relevance of the latter fields in the context of current models of dark matter and dark energy as well as the bouncing models of Universe.

Massive Spinning Relativistic Particle: Revisited Under BRST and Supervariable Approaches

We discuss the continuous and infinitesimal gauge, supergauge, reparameterization, nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetries and derive corresponding nilpotent charges for the one (0+1)-dimensional (1D) massive model of a spinning relativistic particle. We exploit the theoretical potential and power of the BRST and supervariable approaches to derive the (anti-)BRST symmetries and coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangians for this system. In particular, we capture the off-shell nilpotency and absolute anticommutatvity of the conserved (anti-)BRST charges within the framework of the newly proposed (anti-)chiral supervariable approach (ACSA) to BRST formalism where only the (anti-)chiral supervariables (and their suitable super expansions are taken into account along the Grassmannian direction(s)). One of the novel observations of our present investigation is the derivation of the Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restriction by the requirement of the absolute anticommutatvity of the (anti-)BRST charges in the ordinary space. We obtain the same restriction within the framework of ACSA to BRST formalism by (i) the symmetry invariance of the coupled Lagrangians, and (ii) the proof of the absolute anticommutatvity of the conserved and nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges. The observation of the anticommutativity property of the (anti-)BRST charges is a novel result in view of the fact that we have taken into account only the (anti-)chiral super expansions.

Modified 2D Proca Theory: Revisited Under BRST and (Anti-)Chiral Superfield Formalisms

Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) approach, we discuss mainly the fermionic (i.e. off-shell nilpotent) (anti-)BRST, (anti-)co-BRST and some discrete dual-symmetries of the appropriate Lagrangian densities for a two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) modified Proca (i.e. a massive Abelian 1-form) theory without any interaction with matter fields. One of the novel observations of our present investigation is the existence of some kinds of restrictions in the case of our present Stückelberg-modified version of the 2D Proca theory which is not like the standard Curci-Ferrari (CF)-condition of a non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory. Some kinds of similarities and a few differences between them have been pointed out in our present investigation. To establish the sanctity of the above off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST symmetries, we derive them by using our newly proposed (anti-)chiral superfield formalism where a few specific and appropriate sets of invariant quantities play a decisive role. We express the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST conserved charges in terms of the superfields that are obtained after the applications of (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariant restrictions and prove their off-shell nilpotency and absolute anticommutativity properties, too. Finally, we make some comments on (i) the novelty of our restrictions/obstructions, and (ii) the physics behind the negative kinetic term associated with the pseudo-scalar field of our present theory.

Basic Brackets of a 2D Model for the Hodge Theory without its Canonical Conjugate Momenta

We deduce the canonical brackets for a two (1 + 1)-dimensional (2D) free Abelian 1-form gauge theory by exploiting the beauty and strength of the continuous symmetries of a Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) invariant Lagrangian density that respects, in totality, six continuous symmetries. These symmetries entail upon this model to become a field theoretic example of Hodge theory. Taken together, these symmetries enforce the existence of exactly the same canonical brackets amongst the creation and annihilation operators that are found to exist within the standard canonical quantization scheme. These creation and annihilation operators appear in the normal mode expansion of the basic fields of this theory. In other words, we provide an alternative to the canonical method of quantization for our present model of Hodge theory where the continuous internal symmetries play a decisive role. We conjecture that our method of quantization is valid for a class of field theories that are tractable physical examples for the Hodge theory. This statement is true in any arbitrary dimension of spacetime.

Novel symmetries in an interacting N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical model

We demonstrate the existence of a set of novel discrete symmetry transformations in the case of an interacting N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical model of a system of an electron moving on a sphere in the background of a magnetic monopole and establish its interpretation in the language of differential geometry. These discrete symmetries are, over and above, the usual three continuous symmetries of the theory which together provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. We derive the nilpotent N = 2 SUSY transformations by exploiting our idea of supervariable approach and provide geometrical meaning to these transformations in the language of Grassmannian translational generators on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold on which our N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical model is generalized. We express the conserved supercharges and the invariance of the Lagrangian in terms of the supervariables (obtained after the imposition of the SUSY invariant restrictions) and provide the geometrical meaning to (i) the nilpotency property of the N = 2 supercharges, and (ii) the SUSY invariance of the Lagrangian of our N = 2 SUSY theory.

Superspace Unitary Operator in Superfield Approach to Non-Abelian Gauge Theory with Dirac Fields

Within the framework of augmented version of the superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we derive the superspace unitary operator (and its Hermitian conjugate) in the context of four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) interacting non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory with Dirac fields. The ordinary 4D non-Abelian theory, defined on the flat 4D Minkowski spacetime manifold, is generalized onto a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold which is parameterized by the spacetime bosonic coordinates x^μ(with μ= 0, 1, 2, 3) and a pair of Grassmannian variables (θ, \barθ) which satisfy the standard relationships: θ^2 = {\barθ}^2 = 0, θ\,\barθ+ \barθ\,θ= 0. Various consequences of the application of the above superspace (SUSP) unitary operator (and its Hermitian conjugate) are discussed. In particular, we obtain the results of the application of horizontality condition (HC) and gauge invariant restriction (GIR) in the language of the above SUSP operators. One of the novel results of our present investigation is the derivation of explicit expressions for the SUSP unitary operator (and its Hermitian conjugate) without imposing any Hermitian conjugation condition from outside on the parameters and (super)fields of the supersymmetric version of our 4D interacting non-Abelian 1-form theory with Dirac fields.

Supervariable Approach to the Nilpotent Symmetries for a Toy Model of the Hodge Theory

We exploit the standard techniques of the supervariable approach to derive the nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for a toy model of the Hodge theory (i.e. a rigid rotor) and provide the geometrical meaning and interpretation to them. Furthermore, we also derive the nilpotent (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations for this theory within the framework of the above supervariable approach. We capture the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariance of the Lagrangian of our present theory within the framework of augmented supervariable formalism. We also express the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST charges in terms of the supervariables (obtained after the application of the (dual-)horizontality conditions and (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariant restrictions) to provide the geometrical interpretations for their nilpotency and anticommutativity properties. The application of the dual-horizontality condition and ensuing proper (i.e. nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting) fermionic (anti-)co-BRST symmetries are completely novel results in our present investigation.

Universal Superspace Unitary Operator for Some Interesting Abelian Models: Superfield Approach

Within the framework of augmented version of superfield formalism, we derive the superspace unitary operator and show its usefulness in the derivation of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for a set of interesting models for the Abelian 1-form gauge theories. These models are (i) a one (0+1)-dimensional (1D) toy model of a rigid rotor, (ii) the two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) modified versions of the Proca and anomalous Abelian 1-form gauge theories, and (iii) the 2D self-dual bosonic gauge field theory. We provide, in some sense, the alternatives to the horizontality condition (HC) and the gauge invariant restrictions (GIRs) in the language of the above superspace (SUSP) unitary operator. One of the key observations of our present endeavor is the result that the SUSP unitary operator and its hermitian conjugate are found to be the same for all the Abelian models under consideration (including the 4D interacting Abelian 1-form gauge theories with Dirac and complex scalar fields which have been discussed earlier). Thus, we establish the universality of the SUSP operator for the above Abelian theories.

A Free N = 2 Supersymmetric System: Novel Symmetries

We discuss a set of novel discrete symmetries of a free N = 2 supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanical system which is the limiting case of a widely-studied interacting SUSY model of a charged particle constrained to move on a sphere in the background of a Dirac magnetic monopole. The usual continuous symmetries of this model provide the physical realization of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. The interplay between the novel discrete symmetries and usual continuous symmetries leads to the physical realization of relationship between the (co-)exterior derivatives of differential geometry. We have also exploited the supervariable approach to derive the nilpotent N = 2 SUSY symmetries of the theory and provided the geometrical origin and interpretation for the nilpotency property. Ultimately, our present study (based on innate symmetries) proves that our free N = 2 SUSY example is a tractable model for the Hodge theory.

Augmented Superfield Approach to Nilpotent Symmetries in the Modified Version of 2D Proca Theory

We derive the complete set of off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST), anti-BRST and (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations for all the fields of the modified version of two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) Proca theory by exploiting the "augmented" superfield formalism where the (dual-)horizontality conditions and (dual-)gauge-invariant restrictions are exploited together. We capture the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariance of the Lagrangian density in the language of superfield formalism. We also express the nilpotency and absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST charges within the framework of augmented superfield formalism. This exercise leads to some novel observations which have, hitherto, not been pointed out in the literature within the framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. For the sake of completeness, we also mention, very briefly, a unique bosonic symmetry, the ghost-scale symmetry and discrete symmetries of the theory and show that the algebra of conserved charges captures the cohomological aspects of differential geometry. Thus, our present modified 2D Proca theory is a model for the Hodge Theory.

Canonical brackets of a toy model for the Hodge theory without its canonical conjugate momenta

We consider the toy model of a rigid rotor as an example of the Hodge theory within the framework of the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism and show that the internal symmetries of this theory lead to the derivation of canonical brackets amongst the creation and annihilation operators of the dynamical variables where the definition of the canonical conjugate momenta is not required. We invoke only the spin-statistics theorem, normal ordering and basic concepts of continuous symmetries (and their generators) to derive the canonical brackets for the model of a one (0 + 1)-dimensional (1D) rigid rotor without using the definition of the canonical conjugate momenta anywhere. Our present method of derivation of the basic brackets is conjectured to be true for a class of theories that provide a set of tractable physical examples for the Hodge theory.

N = 2 Supersymmetric Harmonic Oscillator: Basic Brackets Without Canonical Conjugate Momenta

We exploit the ideas of spin-statistics theorem, normal-ordering and the key concepts behind the symmetry principles to derive the canonical (anti)commutators for the case of a one (0 + 1)-dimensional (1D) N = 2 supersymmetric (SUSY) harmonic oscillator (HO) without taking the help of the mathematical definition of canonical conjugate momenta with respect to the bosonic and fermionic variables of this toy model for the Hodge theory (where the continuous and discrete symmetries of the theory provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry). In our present endeavor, it is the full set of continuous symmetries and their corresponding generators that lead to the derivation of basic (anti)commutators amongst the creation and annihilation operators that appear in the normal mode expansions of the dynamical fermionic and bosonic variables of our present N = 2 SUSY theory of a HO. These basic brackets are in complete agreement with such kind of brackets that are derived from the standard canonical method of quantization scheme.

N = 2 SUSY symmetries for a moving charged particle under influence of a magnetic field: Supervariable approach

We exploit the supersymmetric invariant restrictions (SUSYIRs) on the supervariables to derive the nilpotent N = 2 SUSY transformations for the supersymmetric quantum mechanical model of the motion of a charged particle in the X-Y plane (where the magnetic field (B_z) is applied along the Z-direction). The supervariables are defined on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parametrized by a bosonic "time" variable t and a pair of Grassmannian variables θand \barθ(with θ^2 = {\barθ}^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). We take the (anti-)chiral supervariables for our purpose so that the nilpotency property of the N = 2 SUSY symmetry transformations could be captured within the framework of supervariable approach. We express the Lagrangian as well as supercharges in terms of the supervariables (that are obtained after the application of the appropriate SUSYIRs) and provide geometrical basis, within the framework of our supervariable approach, for (i) the nilpotency property of the above SUSY transformations, and (ii) the SUSY invariance of the Lagrangian.

Superspace Unitary Operator in QED with Dirac and Complex Scalar Fields: Superfield Approach

We exploit the strength of the superspace (SUSP) unitary operator to obtain the results of the application of the horizontality condition (HC) within the framework of augmented version of superfield formalism that is applied to the interacting systems of Abelian 1-form gauge theories where the U(1) Abelian 1-form gauge field couples to the Dirac and complex scalar fields in the physical four (3 + 1)-dimensions of spacetime. These interacting theories are generalized onto a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold that is parametrized by the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) spacetime variables and a pair of Grassmannian variables. To derive the (anti-)BRST symmetries for the matter fields, we impose the gauge invariant restrictions (GIRs) on the superfields defined on the (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold. We discuss various outcomes that emerge out from our knowledge of the SUSP unitary operator and its hermitian conjugate. The latter operator is derived without imposing any operation of hermitian conjugation on the parameters and fields of our theory from outside. This is an interesting observation in our present investigation.

Abelian p-Form (p = 1, 2, 3) Gauge Theories as the Field Theoretic Models for the Hodge Theory

Taking the simple examples of an Abelian 1-form gauge theory in two (1 + 1)-dimensions, a 2-form gauge theory in four (3 + 1)-dimensions and a 3-form gauge theory in six (5 + 1)-dimensions of spacetime, we establish that such gauge theories respect, in addition to the gauge symmetry transformations that are generated by the first-class constraints of the theory, additional continuous symmetry transformations. We christen the latter symmetry transformations as the dual-gauge transformations. We generalize the above gauge and dual-gauge transformations to obtain the proper (anti-)BRST and (anti-)dual-BRST transformations for the Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of BRST formalism. We concisely mention such symmetries for the 2D free Abelian 1-form and 4D free Abelian 2-form gauge theories and briefly discuss their topological aspects in our present endeavor. We conjecture that any arbitrary Abelian p-form gauge theory would respect the above cited additional symmetry in D = 2p (p = 1, 2, 3,...) dimensions of spacetime. By exploiting the above inputs, we establish that the Abelian 3-form gauge theory, in six (5 + 1)-dimensions of spacetime, is a perfect model for the Hodge theory whose discrete and continuous symmetry transformations provide the physical realizations of all aspects of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. As far as the physical utility of the above nilpotent symmetries is concerned, we demonstrate that the 2D Abelian 1-form gauge theory is a perfect model of a new class of topological theory and 4D Abelian 2-form as well as 6D Abelian 3-form gauge theories are the field theoretic models for the quasi-topological field theory.

An Interacting Gauge Field Theoretic Model for the Hodge Theory: Basic Canonical Brackets

We derive the basic canonical brackets amongst the creation and annihilation operators for a two (1 + 1)-dimensional (2D) gauge field theoretic model of an interacting Hodge theory where a U(1) gauge field (A_μ) is coupled with the fermionic Dirac fields (ψand \bar ψ). In this derivation, we exploit the spin-statistics theorem, normal ordering and the strength of the underlying six infinitesimal continuous symmetries (and the concept of their generators) that are present in the theory. We do not use the definition of the canonical conjugate momenta (corresponding to the basic fields of the theory) anywhere in our whole discussion. Thus, we conjecture that our present approach provides an alternative to the canonical method of quantization for a class of gauge field theories that are physical examples of Hodge theory where the continuous symmetries (and corresponding generators) provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry at the algebraic level.

General N = 2 Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanical Model: Supervariable Approach to its Off-Shell Nilpotent Symmetries

Using the supersymmetric (SUSY) invariant restrictions on the (anti-)chiral supervariables, we derive the off-shell nilpotent symmetries of the general one (0 + 1)-dimensional N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical (QM) model which is considered on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold (parametrized by a bosonic variable t and a pair of Grassmannian variables θand \barθwith θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). We provide the geometrical meanings to the two SUSY transformations of our present theory which are valid for any arbitrary type of superpotential. We express the conserved charges and Lagrangian of the theory in terms of the supervariables (that are obtained after the application of SUSY invariant restrictions) and provide the geometrical interpretation for the nilpotency property and SUSY invariance of the Lagrangian for the general N = 2 SUSY quantum theory. We also comment on the mathematical interpretation of the above symmetry transformations.

Nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting symmetries in the Freedman-Townsend model: augmented superfield formalism

We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations, corresponding to the (1-form) Yang-Mills (YM) and (2-form) tensorial gauge symmetries of the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) Freedman-Townsend (FT) model, by exploiting the augmented version of Bonora-Tonin's (BT) superfield approach to BRST formalism where the 4D flat Minkowskian theory is generalized onto the (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold. One of the novel observations is the fact that we are theoretically compelled to go beyond the horizontality condition (HC) to invoke an additional set of gauge-invariant restrictions (GIRs) for the derivation of the full set of proper (anti-)BRST symmetries. To obtain the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, corresponding to the tensorial (2-form) gauge symmetries within the framework of augmented version of BT-superfield approach, we are logically forced to modify the FT-model to incorporate an auxiliary 1-form field and the kinetic term for the antisymmetric (2-form) gauge field. This is also a new observation in our present investigation. We point out some key differences between the modified FT-model and Lahiri-model (LM) of the dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theories.

Self-Dual Chiral Boson: Augmented Superfield Approach

We exploit the standard tools and techniques of the augmented version of Bonora-Tonin (BT) superfield formalism to derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST symmetry transformations for the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) invariant Lagrangian density of a self-dual bosonic system. In the derivation of the full set of the above transformations, we invoke the (dual-)horizontality conditions, (anti-)BRST and (anti-)co-BRST invariant restrictions on the superfields that are defined on the (2, 2)-dimensional supermanifold. The latter is parameterized by the bosonic variable x^μ\,(μ= 0,\, 1) and a pair of Grassmanian variables θand \barθ(with θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0 and θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). The dynamics of this system is such that, instead of the full (2, 2) dimensional superspace coordinates (x^μ, θ, \barθ), we require only the specific (1, 2)-dimensional super-subspace variables (t, θ, \barθ) for its description. This is a novel observation in the context of superfield approach to BRST formalism. The application of the dual-horizontality condition, in the derivation of a set of proper (anti-)co-BRST symmetries, is also one of the new ingredients of our present endeavor where we have exploited the augmented version of superfield formalism which is geometrically very intuitive.

Superfield approach to nilpotent symmetries in 3D Jackiw-Pi model of massive non-Abelian theory

In the available literature, only the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) symmetries are known for the Jackiw-Pi model of the three (2 + 1)-dimensional (3D) massive non-Abelian gauge theory. We derive the off-shell nilpotent (s_{(a)b}^2 = 0) and absolutely anticommuting (s_b \,s_{ab} + s_{ab}\, s_b = 0) (anti-)BRST transformations s_{(a)b} corresponding to the usual Yang-Mills gauge transformations of this model by exploiting the "augmented" superfield formalism where the horizontality condition and gauge invariant restrictions blend together in a meaningful manner. There is a non-Yang-Mills (NYM) symmetry in this theory, too. However, we do not touch the NYM symmetry in our present endeavor. This superfield formalism leads to the derivation of an (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari restriction which plays a key role in the proof of absolute anticommutativity of s_{(a)b}. The derivation of the proper anti-BRST symmetry transformations is important from the point of view of geometrical objects called gerbes. A novel feature of our present investigation is the derivation of the (anti-)BRST transformations for the auxiliary field ρfrom our superfield formalism which is neither generated by the (anti-)BRST charges nor obtained from the requirements of nilpotency and/or absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST symmetries for our present 3D non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory.

Supervariable approach to nilpotent symmetries of a couple of N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical models

We derive the on-shell as well as off-shell nilpotent supersymmetric (SUSY) symmetry transformations for the N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical model of a one (0 + 1)-dimensional (1D) free SUSY particle by exploiting the SUSY invariant restrictions (SUSYIRs) on the (anti-)chiral supervariables of the SUSY theory that is defined on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold (parametrized by a bosonic variable t and a pair of Grassmannian variables θand \barθwith θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0). Within the framework of our novel approach, we express the Lagrangian and conserved SUSY charges in terms of the (anti-)chiral supervariables to demonstrate the SUSY invariance of the Lagrangian as well as the nilpotency of the SUSY conserved charges in a simple manner. Our approach has the potential to be generalized to the description of other N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical systems with physically interesting potential functions. To corroborate the above assertion, we apply our method to derive the N = 2 continuous and nilpotent SUSY transformations for one of the simplest interacting SUSY system of a 1D harmonic oscillator.

A novel observation in the BRST approach to a free spinning relativistic particle

For the newly proposed coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangians for the supersymmetric (SUSY) system of a one (0 + 1)-dimensional spinning relativistic particle, we derive the Noether conserved charges corresponding to its (super)gauge, Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST), anti-BRST and ghost-scale symmetry transformations. We deduce the underlying algebra amongst the continuous symmetry operators and corresponding conserved charges. We point out a novel observation that emerges, for this specific SUSY system, when we discuss it within the framework of BRST formalism. In particular, the requirement of the physicality criteria with the (anti-)BRST charges leads to a completely new observation because, as it turns out, one of the primary constraints does not annihilate the physical state of the theory. We have never come across this kind of result in the realm of BRST approach to usual gauge theories. We provide the physical and theoretical reasons behind the above observation.

Curci-Ferrari Type Condition in Hamiltonian Formalism: A Free Spinning Relativistic Particle

The Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type of restriction emerges in the description of a free spinning relativistic particle within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism when the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for this system are derived from the application of horizontality condition (HC) and its supersymmetric generalization (SUSY-HC) within the framework of superfield formalism. We show that the above CF-condition, which turns out to be the secondary constraint of our present theory, remains time-evolution invariant within the framework of Hamiltonian formalism. This time-evolution invariance (i) physically justifies the imposition of the (anti-)BRST invariant CF-type condition on this system, and (ii) mathematically implies the linear independence of BRST and anti-BRST symmetries of our present theory.

Modified 2D Proca theory: off-shell nilpotent symmetries and their mathematical as well as physical implications

We derive the off-shell nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST), anti-BRST, (anti-)co-BRST, a bosonic and the ghost-scale symmetry transformations for a couple of equivalent Lagrangian densities of the two (1 + 1)-dimensional (2D) Stueckelberg-modified version of Proca theory which also incorporates a pseudo-scalar field. We also discuss algebraically suitable discrete symmetry transformations of the theory. Finally, we demonstrate the relevance of the above continuous and discrete symmetries in the context of differential geometry and establish that our present massive 2D theory is a tractable field theoretic model for the Hodge theory. One of the key novel observations of our present investigation is the appearance of Curci-Ferrari (CF) type restrictions even in the case of our present massive 2D Abelian 1-form gauge theory. We also point out the mathematical as well as physical implications of the above pseudo-scalar field in our present theory.

Novel discrete symmetries in the general N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical model

In addition to the usual supersymmetric (SUSY) continuous symmetry transformations for the general N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical model, we show the existence of a set of novel discrete symmetry transformations for the Lagrangian of the above SUSY quantum mechanical model. Out of all these discrete symmetry transformations, a unique discrete transformation corresponds to the Hodge duality operation of differential geometry and the above SUSY continuous symmetry transformations (and their anticommutator) provide the physical realizations of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. Thus, we provide a concrete proof of our earlier conjecture that any arbitrary N= 2 SUSY quantum mechanical model is an example of a Hodge theory where the cohomological operators find their physical realizations in the language of symmetry transformations of this theory. Possible physical implications of our present study are pointed out, too.

Novel symmetries in N = 2 supersymmetric quantum mechanical models

We demonstrate the existence of a novel set of discrete symmetries in the context of N = 2 supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum mechanical model with a potential function f(x) that is a generalization of the potential of the 1D SUSY harmonic oscillator. We perform the same exercise for the motion of a charged particle in the X-Y plane under the influence of a magnetic field in the Z-direction. We derive the underlying algebra of the existing continuous symmetry transformations (and corresponding conserved charges) and establish its relevance to the algebraic structures of the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. We show that the discrete symmetry transformations of our present general theories correspond to the Hodge duality operation. Ultimately, we conjecture that any arbitrary N = 2 SUSY quantum mechanical system can be shown to be a tractable model for the Hodge theory.

Novel symmetries in the modified version of two dimensional Proca theory

By exploiting Stueckelberg's approach, we obtain a gauge theory for the two (1+1)-dimensional (2D) Proca theory and demonstrate that this theory is endowed with, in addition to the usual Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetries, the on-shell nilpotent (anti-)co-BRST symmetries, under which the total gauge-fixing term remains invariant. The anticommutator of the BRST and co-BRST (as well as anti-BRST and anti-co-BRST) symmetries define a unique bosonic symmetry in the theory, under which the ghost part of the Lagrangian density remains invariant. To establish connections of the above symmetries with the Hodge theory, we invoke a pseudo-scalar field in the theory. Ultimately, we demonstrate that the full theory provides a field theoretic example for the Hodge theory where the continuous symmetry transformations provide a physical realization of the de Rham cohomological operators and discrete symmetries of the theory lead to the physical realization of the Hodge duality operation of differential geometry. We also mention the physical implications and utility of our present investigation.

Abelian 3-form gauge theory: superfield approach

We discuss a D-dimensional Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of Bonora-Tonin's superfield formalism and derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for this theory. To pay our homage to Victor I. Ogievetsky (1928-1996), who was one of the inventors of Abelian 2-form (antisymmetric tensor) gauge field, we go a step further and discuss the above D-dimensional Abelian 3-form gauge theory within the framework of BRST formalism and establish that the existence of the (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF) type of restrictions is the hallmark of any arbitrary p-form gauge theory (discussed within the framework of BRST formalism).

Dual-BRST symmetry: 6D Abelian 3-form gauge theory

Within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, we demonstrate the existence of the novel off-shell nilpotent (anti-)dual-BRST symmetries in the context of a six (5 + 1)-dimensional (6D) free Abelian 3-form gauge theory. Under these local and continuous symmetry transformations, the total gauge-fixing term of the Lagrangian density remains invariant. This observation should be contrasted with the off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations, under which, the total kinetic term of the theory remains invariant. The anticommutator of the above nilpotent (anti-)BRST and (anti-)dual-BRST transformations leads to the derivation of a bosonic symmetry in the theory. There exists a discrete symmetry transformation in the theory which provides a thread of connection between the nilpotent (anti-)BRST and (anti-)dual-BRST transformations. This theory is endowed with a ghost-scale symmetry, too. We discuss the algebra of these symmetry transformations and show that the structure of the algebra is reminiscent of the algebra of de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry.

Superfield Approach to Nilpotent Symmetries of the Freedman-Townsend Model: Novel Features

We perform the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) analysis of the Freedman-Townsend (FT) model of topologically massive non-Abelian theory by exploiting its (1-form) Yang-Mills (YM) gauge transformations to show the existence of some novel features that are totally different from the results obtained in such a kind of consideration carried out for the dynamical non-Abelian 2-form theory. We tap here the potential and power of the "augmented" version of Bonora-Tonin's superfield approach to BRST formalism to derive the full set of off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations where, in addition to the horizontality condition (HC), we are theoretically compelled to exploit the appropriate gauge-invariant restrictions (GIRs) on the (super)fields for the derivation of the appropriate symmetry transformations for all the relevant fields. We compare our key results with that of the other such attempt for the discussion of the present model within the framework of BRST formalism.

Supersymmetrization of horizontality condition: nilpotent symmetries for a free spinning relativistic particle

We derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for a supersymmetric system of a free spinning relativistic particle within the framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. A novel feature of our present investigation is the consistent and clear supersymmetric modification of the celebrated horizontality condition for the precise determination of the proper (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for all the bosonic and fermionic dynamical variables of our theory which is considered on a (1, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parameterized by an even (bosonic) variable (τ) and a pair of odd (fermionic) variables θand \barθ(with θ^2 = \barθ^2 = 0,\; θ\barθ+ \barθθ= 0) of the Grassmann algebra. One of the most important features of our present investigation is the derivation of (anti-)BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari type restriction which turns out to be responsible for the absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations and existence of the coupled (but equivalent) Lagrangians for the present theory of a supersymmetric system.

BRST analysis of topologically massive gauge theory: novel observations

A dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory (with B \wedge F term) is endowed with the "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetry transformations. In our present endeavor, we exploit the latter gauge symmetry transformations and perform the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) analysis of the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory. We demonstrate the existence of some novel features that have, hitherto, not been observed in the context of BRST approach to 4D (non-)Abelian 1-form as well as Abelian 2-form and 3-form gauge theories. We comment on the differences between the novel features that emerge in the BRST analysis of the "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetries of the theory.

Comments on the dual-BRST symmetry

In view of a raging controversy on the topic of dual-Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (dual-BRST/co-BRST) and anti-co-BRST symmetry transformations in the context of four (3+1)-dimensional (4D) Abelian 2-form and 2D (non-)Abelian 1-form gauge theories, we attempt, in our present short note, to settle the dust by taking the help of mathematics of differential geometry, connected with the Hodge theory, which was the original motivation for the nomenclature of "dual-BRST symmetry" in our earlier set of works. It has been claimed, in a recent set of papers, that the co-BRST symmetries are not independent of the BRST symmetries. We show that the BRST and co-BRST symmetries are independent symmetries in the same fashion as the exterior and co-exterior derivatives are independent entities belonging to the set of de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry.

New observations in the BRST analysis of dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory

We generalize the usual gauge transformations connected with the 1-form gauge potential to the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the four (3+1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive non-Abelian gauge theory that incorporates the famous (B\wedge F) term where there is an explicit topological coupling between 1-form and 2-form gauge fields. A novel feature of our present investigation is the observation that the (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for the auxiliary 1-form field (K_μ) and 2-form gauge potential (B_{0i}) are not generated by the (anti-)BRST charges that are derived by exploiting all the relevant (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to all the fields of the present theory. This observation is a new result because it is drastically different from the application of the BRST formalism to (non-)Abelian 1-form and Abelian 2-form as well as 3-form gauge theories.

Notoph Gauge Theory: Superfield Formalism

We derive absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the 4D free Abelian 2-form gauge theory by exploiting the superfield approach to BRST formalism. The antisymmetric tensor gauge field of the above theory was christened as the "notoph" (i.e. the opposite of "photon") gauge field by Ogievetsky and Palubarinov way back in 1966-67. We briefly outline the problems involved in obtaining the absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-) BRST transformations and their resolution within the framework of geometrical superfield approach to BRST formalism. One of the highlights of our results is the emergence of a Curci-Ferrari type of restriction in the context of 4D Abelian 2-form (notoph) gauge theory which renders the nilpotent (anti-) BRST symmetries of the theory to be absolutely anticommutative in nature.

Symmetry invariance, anticommutativity and nilpotency in BRST approach to QED: superfield formalism

We provide the geometrical interpretation for the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry invariance of the Lagrangian density of a four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) interacting U(1) gauge theory within the framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. This interacting theory, where there is an explicit coupling between the U(1) gauge field and matter (Dirac) fields, is considered on a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parametrized by the four spacetime variables x^μ(μ= 0, 1, 2, 3) and a pair of Grassmannian variables θand \barθ(with θ^2 = \bar θ^2 = 0, θ\barθ+ \bar θθ= 0$). We express the Lagrangian density and (anti-)BRST charges in the language of the superfields and show that (i) the (anti-)BRST invariance of the 4D Lagrangian density is equivalent to the translation of the super Lagrangian density along the Grassmannian direction(s) (θand/or \barθ) of the (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold such that the outcome of the above translation(s) is zero, and (ii) the anticommutativity and nilpotency of the (anti-)BRST charges are the automatic consequences of our superfield formulation.

Topologically massive non-Abelian theory: superfield formalism

We apply the well-established techniques of geometrical superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism in the context of four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) dynamical non-Abelian 2-form gauge theory by exploiting its inherent "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetry transformations and derive the corresponding off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting BRST and anti-BRST symmetry transformations. Our approach leads to the derivation of three (anti-) BRST invariant Curci-Ferrari (CF)-type restrictions that are found to be responsible for the absolute anticommutativity of the BRST and anti-BRST symmetry transformations. We derive the coupled Lagrangian densities that respect the (anti-) BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to the "vector" gauge transformations. We also capture the (anti-) BRST invariance of the CF-type restrictions and coupled Lagrangian densities within the framework of our superfield approach. We obtain, furthermore, the off-shell nilpotent (anti-) BRST symmetry transformations when the (anti-) BRST symmetry transformations corresponding to the "scalar" and "vector" gauge symmetries are merged together. These off-shell nilpotent "merged" (anti-) BRST symmetries are, however, found to be not absolutely anticommuting in nature.

A note on the (anti-)BRST invariant Lagrangian densities for the free abelian 2-form gauge theory

We show that the previously known off-shell nilpotent (s_{(a)b}^2 = 0) and absolutely anticommuting (s_b s_{ab} + s_{ab} s_b = 0) Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) transformations (s_b) and anti-BRST transformations (s_{ab}) are the symmetry transformations of the appropriate Lagrangian densities of a four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory which do not explicitly incorporate a very specific constrained field condition through a Lagrange multiplier 4D vector field. The above condition, which is the analogue of the Curci-Ferrari restriction of the non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory, emerges from the Euler-Lagrange equations of motion of our present theory and ensures the absolute anticommutativity of the transformations s_{(a)b}. Thus, the coupled Lagrangian densities, proposed in our present investigation, are aesthetically more appealing and more economical.

Absolutely anticommuting (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for topologically massive Abelian gauge theory

We demonstrate the existence of the nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations for the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) topologically massive Abelian U(1) gauge theory that is described by the coupled Lagrangian densities (which incorporate the celebrated (B \wedge F) term). The absolute anticommutativity of the (anti-) BRST symmetry transformations is ensured by the existence of a Curci-Ferrari type restriction that emerges from the superfield formalism as well as from the equations of motion that are derived from the above coupled Lagrangian densities. We show the invariance of the action from the point of view of the symmetry considerations as well as superfield formulation. We discuss, furthermore, the topological term within the framework of superfield formalism and provide the geometrical meaning of its invariance under the (anti-) BRST symmetry transformations.

We obtain the (anti-) BRST invariant coupled Lagrangian densities that respect the above nilpotent symmetry transformations. We discuss, furthermore, this (anti-) BRST invariance in the language of the superfield formalism. Rigid Rotor as a Toy Model for Hodge Theory

We apply the superfield approach to the toy model of a rigid rotor and show the existence of the nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and anti-BRST symmetry transformations, under which, the kinetic term and action remain invariant. Furthermore, we also derive the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-) co-BRST symmetry transformations, under which, the gauge-fixing term and Lagrangian remain invariant. The anticommutator of the above nilpotent symmetry transformations leads to the derivation of a bosonic symmetry transformation, under which, the ghost terms and action remain invariant. Together, the above transformations (and their corresponding generators) respect an algebra that turns out to be a physical realization of the algebra obeyed by the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry. Thus, our present model is a toy model for the Hodge theory.

Absolute anticommutativity of the nilpotent symmetries in the Hamiltonian formalism: free Abelian 2-form gauge theory

The celebrated Curci-Ferrari (CF) type of restrictions are invoked to obtain the off-shell nilpotent and absolutely anticommuting (anti-) BRST as well as (anti-) co-BRST symmetry transformations in the context of the Lagrangian description of the physical four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) free Abelian 2-form gauge theory. We show that the above CF type conditions, which turn out to be the secondary constraints of the theory, remain invariant with respect to the time-evolution of the above 2-form gauge system in the Hamiltonian formulation. This time-evolution invariance (i) physically ensures the linear independence of the BRST versus anti-BRST as well as co-BRST versus anti-co-BRST symmetry transformations, and (ii) provides a logical reason behind the imposition of the above CF type restrictions in the proof of the absolute anticommutativity of the off-shell nilpotent (anti-) BRST as well as (anti-) co-BRST symmetry transformations.

The above 4D theory, where there is an explicit coupling between the non-Abelian 1-form gauge field and the Dirac fields, is considered on a (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold, parameterized by the bosonic 4D space-time variables and a pair of Grassmannian variables. On free 4D Abelian 2-form and anomalous 2D Abelian 1-form gauge theories

We demonstrate a few striking similarities and some glaring differences between (i) the free four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) Abelian 2-form gauge theory, and (ii) the anomalous two (1 + 1)-dimensional (2D) Abelian 1-form gauge theory, within the framework of Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism. We demonstrate that the Lagrangian densities of the above two theories transform in a similar fashion under a set of symmetry transformations even though they are endowed with a drastically different variety of constraint structures. Taking the help of our understanding of the 4D Abelian 2-form gauge theory, we prove that the gauge invariant version of the anomalous 2D Abelian 1-form gauge theory is a new field-theoretic model for the Hodge theory where all the de Rham cohomological operators of differential geometry find their physical realizations in the language of proper symmetry transformations. The corresponding conserved charges obey an algebra that is reminiscent of the algebra of the cohomological operators. Augmented Superfield Approach To Unique Nilpotent Symmetries For Complex Scalar Fields In QED

The derivation of the exact and unique nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST)- and anti-BRST symmetries for the matter fields, present in any arbitrary interacting gauge theory, has been a long-standing problem in the framework of superfield approach to BRST formalism. These nilpotent symmetry transformations are deduced for the four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) complex scalar fields, coupled to the U(1) gauge field, in the framework of augmented superfield formalism. This interacting gauge theory (i.e. QED) is considered on a six (4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parametrized by four even spacetime coordinates and a couple of odd elements of the Grassmann algebra. In addition to the horizontality condition (that is responsible for the derivation of the exact nilpotent symmetries for the gauge field and the (anti-)ghost fields), a new restriction on the supermanifold, owing its origin to the (super) covariant derivatives, has been invoked for the derivation of the exact nilpotent symmetry transformations for the matter fields. Nilpotent Symmetries For A Free Relativistic Particle In Augmented Superfield Formalism

In the framework of the augmented superfield formalism, the local, covariant, continuous and off-shell (as well as on-shell) nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations are derived for a $(0 + 1)$-dimensional free scalar relativistic particle that provides a prototype physical example for the more general reparametrization invariant string- and gravitational theories. The trajectory (i.e. the world-line) of the free particle, parametrized by a monotonically increasing evolution parameter $τ$, is embedded in a $D$-dimensional flat Minkowski target manifold. This one-dimensional system is considered on a $(1 + 2)$-dimensional supermanifold parametrized by an even element $τ$ and a couple of odd elements ($θ$ and $\barθ$) of a Grassmannian algebra. The horizontality condition and the invariance of the conserved (super)charges on the (super)manifolds play very crucial roles in the above derivations of the nilpotent symmetries. The geometrical interpretations for the nilpotent (anti-)BRST charges are provided in the framework of augmented superfield approach.

Nilpotent Symmetries For Matter Fields In Non-Abelian Gauge Theory: Augmented Superfield Formalism

In the framework of superfield approach to Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism, the derivation of the (anti-)BRST nilpotent symmetries for the matter fields, present in any arbitrary interacting gauge theory, has been a long-standing problem. In our present investigation, the local, covariant, continuous and off-shell nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations for the Dirac fields $(ψ, \barψ)$ are derived in the framework of the augmented superfield formulation where the four $(3 + 1)$-dimensional (4D) interacting non-Abelian gauge theory is considered on the six $(4 + 2)$-dimensional supermanifold parametrized by the four even spacetime coordinates $x^μ$ and a couple of odd elements ($θ$ and $\barθ$) of the Grassmann algebra. The requirement of the invariance of the matter (super)currents and the horizontality condition on the (super)manifolds leads to the derivation of the nilpotent symmetries for the matter fields as well as the gauge- and the (anti-)ghost fields of the theory in the general scheme of the augmented superfield formalism.

Cohomological aspects of gauge theories: superfield formalism

Some of the key cohomological features of the two $(1+1)$-dimensional (2D) free Abelian- and self-interacting non-Abelian gauge theories (having no interaction with matter fields) are briefly discussed first in the language of symmetry properties of the Lagrangian densities and the same issues are subsequently addressed in the framework of superfield formulation on the four ($2 + 2)$-dimensional supermanifold. Special emphasis is laid on the on-shell- and off-shell nilpotent (co-)BRST symmetries that emerge after the application of (dual) horizontality conditions on the supermanifold. The (anti-)chiral superfields play a very decisive role in the derivation of the on-shell nilpotent symmetries. The study of the present superfield formulation leads to the derivation of some new symmetries for the Lagrangian density and the symmetric energy-momentum tensor. The topological nature of the above theories is captured in the framework of superfield formulation and the geometrical interpretations are provided for some of the topologically interesting quantities.

New topological field theories in two dimensions

It is shown that two$(1 + 1)$-dimensional (2D) free Abelian- and self-interacting non-Abelian gauge theories (without any interaction with matter fields) belong to a new class of topological field theories. These new theories capture together some of the key features of Witten- and Schwarz type of topological field theories because they are endowed with symmetries that are reminiscent of the Schwarz type theories but their Lagrangian density has the appearance of the Witten type theories. The topological invariants for these theories are computed on a 2D compact manifold and their recursion relations are obtained. These new theories are shown to provide a class of tractable field theoretical models for the Hodge theory in two dimensions of flat (Minkowski) spacetime where there are no propagating degrees of freedom associated with the 2D gauge boson.

QUANTIZATION OF A $q$-DEFORMED FREE RELATIVISTIC PARTICLE

A $q$-deformed free scalar relativistic particle is discussed in the framework of the BRST formalism. The on-shell equivalence of these BRST charges requires the deformation parameter to be $ \pm 1 $ under certain identifications. The same restriction ($ q= \pm 1 $) emerges from the conservation of the $q$-deformed BRST charge on an arbitrary (unconstrained) manifold and the validity of the BRST algebra. Boussinesq-type equations from nonlinear realizations of $W_3$

We construct new coset realizations of infinite-dimensional linear $W_3^{\infty}$ symmetry associated with Zamolodchikov's $W_3$ algebra which are different from the previously explored $sl_3$ Toda realization of $W_3^{\infty}$. We deduce the Boussinesq and modified Boussinesq equations as constraints on the geometry of the corresponding coset manifolds. The main characteristic features of these realizations are:i. Among the coset parameters there are the space and time coordinates $x$ and $t$ which enter the Boussinesq equations, all other coset parameters are regarded as fields depending on these coordinates;ii. The spin 2 and 3 currents of $W_3$ and two spin 1 $U(1)$ Kac- Moody currents as well as two spin 0 fields related to the $W_3$currents via Miura maps, come out as the only essential parameters-fields of these cosets. The remaining coset fields are covariantly expressed through them;iii. The Miura maps get a new geometric interpretation as $W_3^{\infty}$ covariant constraints which relate the above fields while passing from one coset manifold to another; iv. The Boussinesq equation and two kinds of the modified Boussinesq equations appear geometrically as the dynamical constraints accomplishing $W_3^{\infty}$ covariant reductions of original coset manifolds to their two-dimensional geodesic submanifolds;v. The zero-curvature representations for these equations arise automatically as a consequence of the covariant reduction. The approach proposed could provide a universal geometric description of the relationship between $W$-type algebras and integrable hierarchies.
