Detailed magnetic and structural analysis mapping a robust magnetic C4 dome in Sr1-xNaxFe2As2

The recently discovered $C_4$ tetragonal magnetic phase in hole-doped members of the iron-based superconductors provides new insights into the origin of unconventional superconductivity. Previously observed in Ba$_{1-x}A_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (with $A =$ K, Na), the $C_4$ magnetic phase exists within the well studied $C_2$ spin-density wave (SDW) dome, arising just before the complete suppression of antiferromagnetic (AFM) order but after the onset of superconductivity. Here, we present detailed x-ray and neutron diffraction studies of Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.10 \leq\ x \leq\ 0.60$) to determine their structural evolution and the extent of the $C_4$ phase. Spanning $Δx\sim 0.14$ in composition, the $C_4$ phase is found to extend over a larger range of compositions, and to exhibit a significantly higher transition temperature, $T_r \sim 65$K, than in either of the other systems in which it has been observed. The onset of this phase is seen near a composition ($x \sim 0.30$) where the bonding angles of the Fe$_2$As$_2$ layers approach the perfect $109.46^\circ$ tetrahedral angle. We discuss the possible role of this return to a higher symmetry environment for the magnetic iron site in triggering the magnetic reorientation and the coupled re-entrance to the tetragonal structure. Finally, we present a new phase diagram, complete with the $C_4$ phase, and use its observation in a third hole-doped 122 system to suggest the universality of this phase.

Double-Q spin-density wave in iron arsenide superconductors

Elucidating the nature of the magnetic ground state of iron-based superconductors is of paramount importance in unveiling the mechanism behind their high temperature superconductivity. Until recently, it was thought that superconductivity emerges only from an orthorhombic antiferromagnetic stripe phase, which can in principle be described in terms of either localized or itinerant spins. However, we recently reported that tetragonal symmetry is restored inside the magnetically ordered state of a hole-doped BaFe2As2. This observation was interpreted as indirect evidence of a new double-Q magnetic structure, but alternative models of orbital order could not be ruled out. Here, we present Mossbauer data that show unambiguously that half of the iron sites in this tetragonal phase are non-magnetic, establishing conclusively the existence of a novel magnetic ground state with a non-uniform magnetization that is inconsistent with localized spins. We show that this state is naturally explained as the interference between two spin-density waves, demonstrating the itinerant character of the magnetism of these materials and the primary role played by magnetic over orbital degrees of freedom.

Emergence of coherence in the charge-density wave state of 2H-NbSe$_2$

A charge-density wave (CDW) state has a broken symmetry described by a complex order parameter with an amplitude and a phase. The conventional view, based on clean, weak-coupling systems, is that a finite amplitude and long-range phase coherence set in simultaneously at the CDW transition temperature T$_{cdw}$. Here we investigate, using photoemission, X-ray scattering and scanning tunneling microscopy, the canonical CDW compound 2H-NbSe$_2$ intercalated with Mn and Co, and show that the conventional view is untenable. We find that, either at high temperature or at large intercalation, CDW order becomes short-ranged with a well-defined amplitude that impacts the electronic dispersion, giving rise to an energy gap. The phase transition at T$_{cdw}$ marks the onset of long-range order with global phase coherence, leading to sharp electronic excitations. Our observations emphasize the importance of phase fluctuations in strongly coupled CDW systems and provide insights into the significance of phase incoherence in `pseudogap' states.

Q-dependence of the spin fluctuations in the intermediate valence compound CePd3

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a single crystal of the intermediate valence compound CePd3. At 300 K the magnetic scattering is quasielastic, with halfwidth of 23 meV, and is independent of momentum transfer Q. At low temperature, the Q-averaged magnetic spectrum is inelastic, exhibiting a broad peak centered near Emax = 55 meV. These results, together with the temperature dependence of the susceptibility, 4f occupation number, and specific heat, can be fit by the Kondo/Anderson impurity model. The low temperature scattering near Emax, however, shows significant variations with Q, reflecting the coherence of the 4f lattice. The intensity is maximal at (1/2, 1/2,0), intermediate at (1/2,0,0) and (0,0,0), and weak at (1/2,1/2,1/2). We discuss this Q-dependence in terms of current ideas about coherence in heavy fermion systems.

Symmetry of re-entrant tetragonal phase in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2: Magnetic versus orbital ordering mechanism

Magneto-structural phase transitions in Ba1-xAxFe2As2 (A = K, Na) materials are discussed for both magnetically and orbitally driven mechanisms, using a symmetry analysis formulated within the Landau theory of phase transitions. Both mechanisms predict identical orthorhombic space-group symmetries for the nematic and magnetic phases observed over much of the phase diagram, but they predict different tetragonal space-group symmetries for the newly discovered re-entrant tetragonal phase in Ba1-xNaxFe2As2 (x ~ 0.24-0.28). In a magnetic scenario, magnetic order with moments along the c-axis, as found experimentally, does not allow any type of orbital order, but in an orbital scenario, we have determined two possible orbital patterns, specified by P4/mnc1' and I4221' space groups, which do not require atomic displacements relative to the parent I4/mmm1' symmetry and, in consequence, are indistinguishable in conventional diffraction experiments. We demonstrate that the three possible space groups are however, distinct in resonant X-ray Bragg diffraction patterns created by Templeton & Templeton scattering. This provides an experimental method of distinguishing between magnetic and orbital models.

Optic phonons and the soft mode in 2H-NbSe2

We present an investigation of the lattice dynamics of the charge-density-wave compound 2H-NbSe2. We analyze the precise nature of the wave vector dependent electron-phonon coupling (EPC) and derive the bare dispersion of the charge-density-wave (CDW) soft phonon mode using inelastic x-ray scattering combined with ab-initio calculations. Experimentally, phonon modes along the Γ - M line, i.e. q = (h, 0, 0) with 0 <= h <= 0.5, with the same longitudinal symmetry (Σ1) as the CDW soft mode were investigated up to 32 meV. In agreement with our calculations we observe significant EPC in the optic modes at h <= 0.2. We analyze the EPC in the optic as well as acoustic modes and show that the q dependences stem from scattering processes between two bands at the Fermi surface both having Nb 4d character. Finally, we demonstrate that the soft mode dispersion at T = 33 K (= {T_{CDW}}) can be well described on the basis of a strongly q dependent EPC matrix element and an acoustic-like bare phonon dispersion in agreement with observations near room temperature.

Electron-phonon coupling in the conventional superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C at high phonon energies studied by time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy

We report an inelastic neutron scattering investigation of phonons with energies up to 159 meV in the conventional superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C. Using the SWEEP mode, a newly developed time-of-flight technique involving the continuous rotation of a single crystal specimen, allowed us to measure a four dimensional volume in (Q,E) space and, thus, determine the dispersion surface and linewidths of the $A_{1g}$ (~ 102 meV) and $A_u$ (~ 159 meV) type phonon modes for the whole Brillouin zone. Despite of having linewidths of $Γ= 10 meV$, $A_{1g}$ modes do not strongly contribute to the total electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$. However, experimental linewidths show a remarkable agreement with ab-initio calculations over the complete phonon energy range demonstrating the accuracy of such calculations in a rare comparison to a comprehensive experimental data set.

Effect of Fermi Surface Nesting on Resonant Spin Excitations in Ba1-xKxFe2As2

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the resonant spin excitations in Ba1-xKxFe2As2 over a broad range of electron band filling. The fall in the superconducting transi- tion temperature with hole doping coincides with the magnetic excitations splitting into two incom- mensurate peaks because of the growing mismatch in the hole and electron Fermi surface volumes, as confirmed by a tight-binding model with s+- symmetry pairing. The reduction in Fermi surface nesting is accompanied by a collapse of the resonance binding energy and its spectral weight caused by the weakening of electron-electron correlations.

Electron-Phonon Coupling and the Soft Phonon Mode in TiSe$_2$

We report high-resolution inelastic x-ray measurements of the soft phonon mode in the charge-density-wave compound TiSe$_2$. We observe a complete softening of a transverse optic phonon at the L point, i.e. q = (0.5, 0, 0.5), at T ~ T_{CDW}. Renormalized phonon energies are observed over a large wavevector range $(0.3, 0, 0.5) \le \mathbf{q} \le (0.5, 0, 0.5)$. Detailed ab-initio calculations for the electronic and lattice dynamical properties of TiSe2 are in quantitative agreement with experimental frequencies for the phonon branch involving the soft mode. The observed broad range of renormalized phonon frequencies is directly related to a broad peak in the electronic susceptibility stabilizing the charge-density-wave ordered state. Our analysis demonstrates that a conventional electron-phonon coupling mechanism can explain a structural instability and the charge-density-wave order in TiSe_2 although other mechanisms might further boost the transition temperature.

Extended Phonon Collapse and the Origin of the Charge-Density-Wave in NbSe$_2$

We report inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of the temperature dependence of phonon dispersion in the prototypical charge-density-wave (CDW) compound NbSe2. Surprisingly, acoustic phonons soften to zero frequency and become overdamped over an extended region around the CDW wavevector. This extended phonon collapse is dramatically different from the sharp cusp in the phonon dispersion expected from Fermi surface nesting. Instead, our experiments combined with ab initio calculations, show that it is the wavevector dependence of the electron-phonon coupling that drives the CDW formation in NbSe$_2$ and determines its periodicity. This mechanism explains the so far enigmatic behavior of CDW in NbSe$_2$ and may provide a new approach to other strongly correlated systems where electron-phonon coupling is important.

Response of acoustic phonons to charge and orbital order in the 50\% doped bilayer manganite LaSr$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$

We report an inelastic neutron scattering study of acoustic phonons in the charge and orbitally ordered bilayer manganite LaSr$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$. For excitation energies less than $15\,\rm{meV}$, we observe an abrupt increase (decrease) of the phonon energies (linewidths) of a transverse acoustic phonon branch at $\mathbf{q} = (h, h, 0)$, $h\le0.3$, upon entering the low temperature charge and orbital ordered state ($T_{COO} = 225\,\rm{K}$). This indicates a reduced electron-phonon coupling due to a decrease of electronic states at the Fermi level leading to a partial removal of the Fermi surface below $T_{COO}$ and provides direct experimental evidence for a link between electron-phonon coupling and charge order in manganites.

Spatial Inhomogeneity in RFeAsO1-xFx (R =Pr, Nd) Determined from Rare Earth Crystal Field Excitations

We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of crystal field transitions in PrFeAsO, PrFeAsO0.87F0.13, and NdFeAsO0.85F0.15. Doping with fluorine produces additional crystal field excitations, providing evidence that there are two distinct charge environments around the rare earth ions, with probabilities that are consistent with a random distribution of dopants on the oxygen sites. The 4f electrons of the Pr3+ and Nd3+ ions have non-magnetic and magnetic ground states, respectively, indicating that the enhancement of Tc compared to LaFeAsO1-xFx is not due to rare earth magnetism.

d-d Excitations in Bilayer Manganites Probed by Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

We report a high resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering investigation of the bilayer manganites La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ with $x = 0.36$ and $0.5$. The momentum dependence along the crystallographic $(110)$ direction for energy losses $1\,\rm{eV} \leq ΔE \leq 15\,\rm{eV}$ has been measured in detail with the data analysis focusing on the energy loss region $1\,\rm{eV} \leq ΔE \leq 5\,\rm{eV}$, which includes a strong peak located at $ΔE \approx 2\,\rm{eV}$. We observe a clear dispersion of up to $0.5\,\rm{eV}$ in the measured $\textbf{q}$ range, which is direct evidence of the non-local character of this excitation. Further, we found that the intensity in this low energy region strongly depends on both the reduced wave vector $\textbf{q} = (h, h, 0)$, $h = 0.1 - 0.5$, and temperature, i.e. different ordered phases. Results can be explained via an intersite $d-d$ charge transfer excitation, proposed for pseudo-cubic manganites, where the hopping rate is strongly increased (decreased) by ferromagnetic (antiferromagnetic) alignment of neighboring in-plane Mn ion core spins.

Incommensurate spin-density wave and magnetic lock-in transition in CaFe4As3

The magnetic structure for the newly discovered iron-arsenide compound \CaFeAs has been studied by neutron powder diffraction. Long-range magnetic order is detected below 85K, with an incommensurate modulation described by the propagation vector k=(0,$δ$,0), $δ\sim$ 0.39. Below $\sim$ 25K, our measurements detect a first-order phase transition where $δ$ locks into the commensurate value 3/8. A model of the magnetic structure is proposed for both temperature regimes, based on Rietveld refinements of the powder data and symmetry considerations. The structures correspond to longitudinal spin-density-waves with magnetic moments directed along the \textit{b}-axis. A Landau analysis captures the change in thermodynamic quantities observed at the two magnetic transitions, in particular the drop in resistivity at the lock-in transition.

Inelastic Neutron Scattering Studies of the Spin and Lattice Dynamics in Iron Arsenide Compounds

Neutrons have played an important role in advancing our understanding of the pairing mechanism and the symmetry of the superconducting energy gap in the iron arsenide compounds. Neutron measurements of the phonon density-of-state are in good agreement with ab initio calculations, provided the magnetism of the iron atoms is taken into account. However, the predicted superconducting transition temperatures are less than 1 K, making a conventional phononic mechanism for superconductivity highly unlikely. Measurements of the spin dynamics within the spin density wave phase of the parent compounds show evidence of strongly dispersive spin waves with exchange interactions consistent with the observed magnetic order. Antiferromagnetic fluctuations persist in the normal phase of the superconducting compounds, but they are more diffuse. Below Tc, there is evidence compounds that these fluctuations condense into a resonant spin excitation at the antiferromagnetic wavevector with an energy that scales with Tc, consistent with unconventional superconductivity of extended-s+/- wave symmetry.

Resonant Spin Excitation in the High Temperature Superconductor Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2

The recent observations of superconductivity at temperatures up to 55K in compounds containing layers of iron arsenide have revealed a new class of high temperature superconductors that show striking similarities to the more familiar cuprates. In both series of compounds, the onset of superconductivity is associated with the suppression of magnetic order by doping holes and/or electrons into the band leading to theories in which magnetic fluctuations are either responsible for or strongly coupled to the superconducting order parameter. In the cuprates, theories of magnetic pairing have been invoked to explain the observation of a resonant magnetic excitation that scales in energy with the superconducting energy gap and is suppressed above the superconducting transition temperature, Tc. Such resonant excitations have been shown by inelastic neutron scattering to be a universal feature of the cuprate superconductors, and have even been observed in heavy fermion superconductors with much lower transition temperatures. In this paper, we show neutron scattering evidence of a resonant excitation in Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2, which is a superconductor below 38K, at the momentum transfer associated with magnetic order in the undoped compound, BaFe2As2, and at an energy transfer that is consistent with scaling in other strongly correlated electron superconductors. As in the cuprates, the peak disappears at Tc providing the first experimental confirmation of a strong coupling of the magnetic fluctuation spectrum to the superconducting order parameter in the new iron arsenide superconductors.
