Calibration and Characterization of the IceCube Photomultiplier Tube

Over 5,000 PMTs are being deployed at the South Pole to compose the IceCube neutrino observatory. Many are placed deep in the ice to detect Cherenkov light emitted by the products of high-energy neutrino interactions, and others are frozen into tanks on the surface to detect particles from atmospheric cosmic ray showers. IceCube is using the 10-inch diameter R7081-02 made by Hamamatsu Photonics. This paper describes the laboratory characterization and calibration of these PMTs before deployment. PMTs were illuminated with pulses ranging from single photons to saturation level. Parameterizations are given for the single photoelectron charge spectrum and the saturation behavior. Time resolution, late pulses and afterpulses are characterized. Because the PMTs are relatively large, the cathode sensitivity uniformity was measured. The absolute photon detection efficiency was calibrated using Rayleigh-scattered photons from a nitrogen laser. Measured characteristics are discussed in the context of their relevance to IceCube event reconstruction and simulation efforts.

Search Capability for η→νe,τνˉe,τη\to ν_{e,τ}\barν_{e,τ} Decays in Cubic Kilometer Neutrino Detectors

We investigate the discovery potential of cubic kilometer neutrino observatories such as IceCube to set stringent limits on the forbidden decays η→νeνˉeη\toν_e\barν_e and η→ντνˉτη\toν_τ\barν_τ. The signatures for these decays are cascade events resulting from the charged-current reactions of νe,ντν_e, ν_τ, νˉe\barν_e and νˉτ\barν_τ on nuclei in such detectors. Background cascade events are mainly due to νeν_e's from atmospheric μμ, K+K^+, and KS0K^{0}_S decays and to a lesser extent from atmospheric νμν_μ neutral current interactions with nuclei. A direct upper limit for the branching ratio η→νe,τνˉe,τη\to ν_{e,τ} \barν_{e,τ} of 4.5×10−44.5\times10^{-4} at 90% CL can be achieved.

Relative abundances of cosmic ray nuclei B-C-N-O in the energy region from 10 GeV/n to 300 GeV/n. Results from ATIC-2 (the science flight of ATIC)

The ATIC balloon-borne experiment measures the energy spectra of elements from H to Fe in primary cosmic rays from about 100 GeV to 100 TeV. ATIC is comprised of a fully active bismuth germanate calorimeter, a carbon target with embedded scintillator hodoscopes, and a silicon matrix that is used as the main charge detector. The silicon matrix produces good charge resolution for protons and helium but only partial resolution for heavier nuclei. In the present paper, the charge resolution of ATIC was improved and backgrounds were reduced in the region from Be to Si by using the upper layer of the scintillator hodoscope as an additional charge detector. The flux ratios of nuclei B/C, C/O, N/O in the energy region from about 10 GeV/nucleon to 300 GeV/nucleon obtained from this high-resolution, high-quality charge spectra are presented, and compared with existing theoretical predictions.

Search for π0→νμνˉμπ^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ Decay in LSND

We observe a net beam-excess of 8.7±6.38.7 \pm 6.3 (stat) ±2.4\pm 2.4 (syst) events, above 160 MeV, resulting from the charged-current reaction of νμν_μ and/or νˉμ\barν_μ on C and H in the LSND detector. No beam related muon background is expected in this energy regime. Within an analysis framework of π0→νμνˉμπ^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ, we set a direct upper limit for this branching ratio of Γ(π0→νμνˉμ)/Γ(π0→all)<1.6×10−6Γ(π^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ) / Γ(π^0 \to all) < 1.6 \times 10^{-6} at 90% confidence level.
