Calibration and Characterization of the IceCube Photomultiplier Tube

Over 5,000 PMTs are being deployed at the South Pole to compose the IceCube neutrino observatory. Many are placed deep in the ice to detect Cherenkov light emitted by the products of high-energy neutrino interactions, and others are frozen into tanks on the surface to detect particles from atmospheric cosmic ray showers. IceCube is using the 10-inch diameter R7081-02 made by Hamamatsu Photonics. This paper describes the laboratory characterization and calibration of these PMTs before deployment. PMTs were illuminated with pulses ranging from single photons to saturation level. Parameterizations are given for the single photoelectron charge spectrum and the saturation behavior. Time resolution, late pulses and afterpulses are characterized. Because the PMTs are relatively large, the cathode sensitivity uniformity was measured. The absolute photon detection efficiency was calibrated using Rayleigh-scattered photons from a nitrogen laser. Measured characteristics are discussed in the context of their relevance to IceCube event reconstruction and simulation efforts.

Search Capability for η→νe,τνˉe,τη\to ν_{e,τ}\barν_{e,τ} Decays in Cubic Kilometer Neutrino Detectors

We investigate the discovery potential of cubic kilometer neutrino observatories such as IceCube to set stringent limits on the forbidden decays η→νeνˉeη\toν_e\barν_e and η→ντνˉτη\toν_τ\barν_τ. The signatures for these decays are cascade events resulting from the charged-current reactions of νe,ντν_e, ν_τ, νˉe\barν_e and νˉτ\barν_τ on nuclei in such detectors. Background cascade events are mainly due to νeν_e's from atmospheric μμ, K+K^+, and KS0K^{0}_S decays and to a lesser extent from atmospheric νμν_μ neutral current interactions with nuclei. A direct upper limit for the branching ratio η→νe,τνˉe,τη\to ν_{e,τ} \barν_{e,τ} of 4.5×10−44.5\times10^{-4} at 90% CL can be achieved.

The first search for extremely-high energy cosmogenic neutrinos with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory

We report on the results of the search for extremely-high energy (EHE) neutrinos with energies above 10710^7 GeV obtained with the partially (∼\sim30%) constructed IceCube in 2007. From the absence of signal events in the sample of 242.1 days of effective livetime, we derive a 90% C.L. model independent differential upper limit based on the number of signal events per energy decade at E2ϕνe+νμ+ντ≃1.4×10−6E^2 ϕ_{ν_e+ν_μ+ν_τ}\simeq 1.4 \times 10^{-6} GeV cm−2^{-2} sec−1^{-1} sr−1^{-1} for neutrinos in the energy range from 3×1073\times10^7 to 3×1093\times10^9 GeV.

Tests of Lorentz violation in muon antineutrino to electron antineutrino oscillations

A recently developed Standard-Model Extension (SME) formalism for neutrino oscillations that includes Lorentz and CPT violation is used to analyze the sidereal time variation of the neutrino event excess measured by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector (LSND) experiment. The LSND experiment, performed at Los Alamos National Laboratory, observed an excess, consistent with neutrino oscillations, of νˉe{\barν}_e in a beam of νˉμ{\barν}_μ. It is determined that the LSND oscillation signal is consistent with no sidereal variation. However, there are several combinations of SME coefficients that describe the LSND data; both with and without sidereal variations. The scale of Lorentz and CPT violation extracted from the LSND data is of order 10−1910^{-19} GeV for the SME coefficients aLa_L and E×cLE \times c_L. This solution for Lorentz and CPT violating neutrino oscillations may be tested by other short baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, such as the MiniBooNE experiment.

Search for π0→νμνˉμπ^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ Decay in LSND

We observe a net beam-excess of 8.7±6.38.7 \pm 6.3 (stat) ±2.4\pm 2.4 (syst) events, above 160 MeV, resulting from the charged-current reaction of νμν_μ and/or νˉμ\barν_μ on C and H in the LSND detector. No beam related muon background is expected in this energy regime. Within an analysis framework of π0→νμνˉμπ^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ, we set a direct upper limit for this branching ratio of Γ(π0→νμνˉμ)/Γ(π0→all)<1.6×10−6Γ(π^0 \to ν_μ\barν_μ) / Γ(π^0 \to all) < 1.6 \times 10^{-6} at 90% confidence level.
