Isochronous island bifurcations driven by resonant magnetic perturbations in Tokamaks

Recent evidences show that heteroclinic bifurcations in magnetic islands may be caused by the amplitude variation of resonant magnetic perturbations in tokamaks. To investigate the onset of these bifurcations, we consider a large aspect ratio tokamak with an ergodic limiter composed of two pairs of rings that create external primary perturbations with two sets of wave numbers. An individual pair produces hyperbolic and elliptic periodic points, and its associated islands, that are consistent with the Poincaré-Birkhoff fixed point theorem. However, for two pairs producing external perturbations resonant on the same rational surface, we show that different configurations of isochronous island chains may appear on phase space according to the amplitude of the electric currents in each pair of the ergodic limiter. When one of the electric currents increases, isochronous bifurcations take place and new islands are created with the same winding number as the preceding islands. We present examples of bifurcation sequences displaying (a) direct transitions from the island chain configuration generated by one of the pairs to the configuration produced by the other pair, and (b) transitions with intermediate configurations produced by the limiter pairs coupling. Furthermore, we identify shearless bifurcations inside some isochronous islands, originating nonmonotonic local winding number profiles with associated shearless invariant curves.

Effects of the spike timing-dependent plasticity on the synchronisation in a random Hodgkin-Huxley neuronal network

In this paper, we study the effects of spike timing-dependent plasticity on synchronisation in a network of Hodgkin-Huxley neurons. Neuron plasticity is a flexible property of a neuron and its network to change temporarily or permanently their biochemical, physiological, and morphological characteristics, in order to adapt to the environment. Regarding the plasticity, we consider Hebbian rules, specifically for spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP), and with regard to network, we consider that the connections are randomly distributed. We analyse the synchronisation and desynchronisation according to an input level and probability of connections. Moreover, we verify that the transition for synchronisation depends on the neuronal network architecture, and the external perturbation level.

Complementary action of chemical and electrical synapses to perception

We study the dynamic range of a cellular automaton model for a neuronal network with electrical and chemical synapses. The neural network is separated into two layers, where one layer corresponds to inhibitory, and the other corresponds to excitatory neurons. We randomly distribute electrical synapses in the network, in order to analyse the effects on the dynamic range. We verify that electrical synapses have a complementary effect on the enhancement of the dynamic range. The enhancement depends on the proportion of electrical synapses, and also depends on the layer where they are distributed.

Super persistent transient in a master-slave configuration with Colpitts oscillators

Master-slave systems have been intensively investigated to model the application of chaos to communications. We considered Colpitts oscillators coupled according to a master-slave configuration to study chaos synchronisation. We revealed the existence of super persistent transients in this coupled system. Moreover, we showed that an additive noise added to the slave system may suppress chaos synchronisation. When synchronisation is not suppressed, the noise induces longer transients.

Effective transport barriers in nontwist systems

In fluids and plasmas with zonal flow reversed shear, a peculiar kind of transport barrier appears in the shearless region, one that is associated with a proper route of transition to chaos. Using a symplectic nontwist maps, which model such zonal flows, we investigate these barriers. In particular, the standard nontwist map, a paradigm of nontwist systems, is used to analyze the parameter dependence of the transport through a broken shearless barrier. Varying a proper control parameter, we identify the onset of structures with high stickiness that give rise to an effective barrier near the broken shearless curve. Several diagnostics are used: stickiness is measured by escape time and transmissivity plots, while barriers that separate different regions of stickiness are identified by employing two indicators in the phase space, the finite-time rotation number and the finite-time Lyapunov exponent.

Bursting synchronization in networks with long-range coupling mediated by a diffusing chemical substance

Many networks of physical and biological interest are characterized by a long-range coupling mediated by a chemical which diffuses through a medium in which oscillators are embedded. We considered a one-dimensional model for this effect for which the diffusion is fast enough so as to be implemented through a coupling whose intensity decays exponentially with the lattice distance. In particular, we analyzed the bursting synchronization of neurons described by two timescales (spiking and bursting activity), and coupled through such a long-range interaction network. One of the advantages of the model is that one can pass from a local (Laplacian) type of coupling to a global (all-to-all) one by varying a single parameter in the interaction term. We characterized bursting synchronization using an order parameter which undergoes a transition as the coupling parameters are changed through a critical value. We also investigated the role of an external time-periodic signal on the bursting synchronization properties of the network. We show potential applications in the control of pathological rhythms in biological neural networks.

Finite-time rotation number: a fast indicator for chaotic dynamical structures

Lagrangian coherent structures are effective barriers, sticky regions, that separate phase space regions of different dynamical behavior. The usual way to detect such structures is via finite-time Lyapunov exponents. We show that similar results can be obtained for single-frequency systems from finite-time rotation numbers, which are much faster to compute. We illustrate our claim by considering examples of continuous and discrete-time dynamical systems of physical interest.

Turing instability in oscillator chains with non-local coupling

We investigate analytically and numerically the conditions for the Turing instability to occur in a one-dimensional chain of nonlinear oscillators coupled non-locally in such a way that the coupling strength decreases with the spatial distance as a power-law. A range parameter makes possible to cover the two limiting cases of local (nearest-neighbor) and a global (all-to-all) couplings. We consider an example from a non-linear auto-catalytic reaction-diffusion model.

Global synchronization of bursting neurons in clustered networks

We investigate the collective dynamics of bursting neurons on clustered network. The clustered network is composed of subnetworks each presenting a small-world property, and in a given subnetwork each neuron has a probability to be connected to the other subnetworks. We give bounds for the critical coupling strength to obtain global burst synchronization in terms of the network structure, i.e., intracluster and intercluster probabilities connections. As the heterogeneity in the network is reduced the network global synchronization is improved. We show that the transitions to global synchrony may be abrupt or smooth depending on the intercluster probability.
