Field-induced valence fluctuation in YbB12_{12}

We performed high-magnetic-field ultrasonic experiments on YbB12_{12} up to 59 T to investigate the valence fluctuations in Yb ions. In zero field, the longitudinal elastic constant C11C_{11}, the transverse elastic constants C44C_{44} and (C11−C12)/2\left( C_{11} - C_{12} \right)/2, and the bulk modulus CBC_\mathrm{B} show a hardening with a change of curvature at around 35 K indicating a small contribution of valence fluctuations to the elastic constants. When high magnetic fields are applied at low temperatures, CBC_\mathrm{B} exhibits a softening above a field-induced insulator-metal transition signaling field-induced valence fluctuations. Furthermore, at elevated temperatures, the field-induced softening of CBC_\mathrm{B} takes place at even lower fields and CBC_\mathrm{B} decreases continuously with field. Our analysis using the multipole susceptibility based on a two-band model reveals that the softening of CBC_\mathrm{B} originates from the enhancement of multipole-strain interaction in addition to the decrease of the insulator energy gap. This analysis indicates that field-induced valence fluctuations of Yb cause the instability of the bulk modulus CBC_\mathrm{B}.

Bond Directional Anapole Order in a Spin-Orbit Coupled Mott Insulator Sr2_2(Ir1−x_{1-x}Rhx_x)O4_{4}

An anapole state that breaks inversion and time reversal symmetries with preserving translation symmetry of underlying lattice has aroused great interest as a new quantum state, but only a few candidate materials have been reported. Recently, in a spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator \SIR, the emergence of a possible hidden order phase with broken inversion symmetry has been suggested at TΩT_Ω above the Néel temperature by optical second harmonic generation measurements. Moreover, polarized neutron diffraction measurements revealed the broken time reversal symmetry below TΩT_Ω, which was supported by subsequent muon spin relaxation experiments. However, the nature of this mysterious phase remains largely elusive. Here, we investigate the hidden order phase through the combined measurements of the in-plane magnetic anisotropy with exceptionally high-precision magnetic torque and the nematic susceptibility with elastoresistance. A distinct two-fold in-plane magnetic anisotropy along the [110] Ir-O-Ir bond direction sets in below ∼TΩ\sim T_Ω, providing thermodynamic evidence for a nematic phase transition with broken C4C_4 rotational symmetry. However, in contrast to the even-parity nematic transition reported in other correlated electron systems, the nematic susceptibility exhibits no divergent behavior towards TΩT_Ω. These results provide bulk evidence for an odd-parity order parameter with broken rotational symmetry in the hidden order state. We discuss the hidden order in terms of an anapole state, in which polar toroidal moment is induced by two current loops in each IrO6_6 octahedron of opposite chirality. Contrary to the simplest loop-current pattern previously suggested, the present results are consistent with a pattern in which the intra-unit cell loop-current flows along only one of the diagonal directions in the IrO4_4 square.

Bulk quantum Hall effect of spin-valley-coupled Dirac fermions in a polar antiferromagnet BaMnSb2_2

Unconventional features of relativistic Dirac/Weyl quasi-particles in topological materials are most evidently manifested in the 2D quantum Hall effect (QHE), whose variety is further enriched by their spin and/or valley polarization. Although its extension to three dimensions has been long-sought and inspired theoretical proposals, material candidates have been lacking. Here we have discovered valley-contrasting spin-polarized Dirac fermions in a multilayer form in bulk antiferromagnet BaMnSb2_2, where the out-of-plane Zeeman-type spin splitting is induced by the in-plane inversion symmetry breaking and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the distorted Sb square net. Furthermore, we have observed well-defined quantized Hall plateaus together with vanishing interlayer conductivity at low temperatures as a hallmark of the half-integer QHE in a bulk form. The Hall conductance of each layer is found to be nearly quantized to 2(N+1/2)e2/h2(N+1/2)e^2/h with NN being the Landau index, which is consistent with two spin-polarized Dirac valleys protected by the strong spin-valley coupling.

Effect of quenched disorder on a quantum spin liquid state of triangular-lattice antiferromagnet 1T-TaS2_2

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic state of matter characterized by quantum entanglement and the absence of any broken symmetry. A long-standing open problem, which is a key for fundamental understanding the mysterious QSL states, is how the quantum fluctuations respond to randomness due to quenched disorder. Transition metal dichalcogenide 1T-TaS2_2 is a candidate material that hosts a QSL ground state with spin-1/2 on the two-dimensional perfect triangular lattice. Here, we performed systematic studies of low-temperature heat capacity and thermal conductivity on pure, Se-substituted and electron irradiated crystals of 1T-TaS2_2. In pure 1T-TaS2_2, the linear temperature term of the heat capacity γTγT and the finite residual linear term of the thermal conductivity in the zero-temperature limit κ0/T≡κ/T(T→0)κ_{0}/T\equivκ/T(T\rightarrow0) are clearly resolved, consistent with the presence of gapless spinons with a Fermi surface. Moreover, while the strong magnetic field slightly enhances κ0/Tκ_0/T, it strongly suppresses γγ. These unusual contrasting responses to magnetic field imply the coexistence of two types of gapless excitations with itinerant and localized characters. Introduction of additional weak random exchange disorder in 1T-Ta(S1−x_{1-x}Sex_x)2_2 leads to vanishing of κ0/Tκ_0/T, indicating that the itinerant gapless excitations are sensitive to the disorder. On the other hand, in both pure and Se-substituted systems, the magnetic contribution of the heat capacity obeys a universal scaling relation, which is consistent with a theory that assumes the presence of localized orphan spins forming random singlets. Electron irradiation in pure 1T-TaS2_2 largely enhances γγ and changes the scaling function dramatically, suggesting a possible new state of spin liquid.

High-Field Ultrasonic Study of Quadrupole Ordering and Crystal Symmetry Breaking in CeRhIn5

We performed an ultrasonic measurement for the heavy-fermion compound CeRhIn5_5 to investigate the origin of the field-induced anisotropic phase in high magnetic fields. The transverse elastic constant CT=(C11−C12)/2C_\mathrm{T} = (C_{11} - C_{12})/2 and the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient αTα_\mathrm{T} show clear anomaly at B⋆=28.5B^\star = 28.5 T, which was discussed as the electronic nematic transition point. In addition, CTC_\mathrm{T} exhibits acoustic de Haas-van Alphen oscillation below 28.5 T. These elastic anomalies around B⋆B^\star indicate an electric quadrupole ordering of Ox2−y2O_{x^2-y^2} accompanied by B1gB_\mathrm{1g} crystal symmetry breaking and Fermi surface reconstruction due to the quadrupole-strain coupling, which results from itinerant 4f4f electrons and the pp-ff hybridized state.
