$\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ long-range magnetic order in centennialite CaCu$_3$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2$$\cdot$0.6D$_2$O: A spin-1/2 perfect kagome antiferromagnet with $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$

Crystal and magnetic structures of the mineral centennialite CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O are investigated by means of synchrotron x-ray diffraction and neutron diffraction measurements complemented by density functional theory (DFT) and pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) calculations. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O crystallizes in the $P\bar{3}m1$ space group and Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a geometrically perfect kagome network with antiferromagnetic $J_1$. No intersite disorder between Cu$^{2+}$ and Ca$^{2+}$ ions is detected. CaCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$H$_2$O enters a magnetic long-range ordered state below $T_\text{N}=7.2$~K, and the $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic structure with negative vector spin chirality is obtained. The ordered moment at 0.3~K is suppressed to $0.58(2)μ_\text{B}$. Our DFT calculations indicate the presence of antiferromagnetic $J_2$ and ferromagnetic $J_d$ superexchange couplings of a strength which places the system at the crossroads of three magnetic orders (at the classical level) and a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ PFFRG analysis shows a dominance of $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ type magnetic correlations, consistent with and indicating proximity to the observed $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ spin structure. The results suggest that this material is located close to a quantum critical point and is a good realization of a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_d$ kagome antiferromagnet.

Bulk superconductivity in undoped T'-La$_{1.9}$Y$_{0.1}$CuO$_4$ probed by muon spin rotation

The Meissner effect has been directly demonstrated by depth-resolved muon spin rotation measurements in high-quality thin films of the T'-structured cuprate, T'-La$_{1.9}$Y$_{0.1}$CuO$_4$, to confirm bulk superconductivity ($T_c\simeq21$ K) in its {\sl undoped} state. The gradual expelling of an external magnetic field is observed over a depth range of $\sim$100 nm in films with a thickness of 275(15) nm, from which the penetration depth is deduced to be 466(22) nm. Based on this result, we argue that the true ground state of the "parent" compound of the $n$-type cuprates is not a Mott insulator but a strongly correlated metal with colossal sensitivity to apical oxygen impurities.

Emergence of non-equilibrium charge dynamics in a charge-cluster glass

Non-equilibrium charge dynamics, such as cooling-rate-dependent charge vitrification and physical aging, have been demonstrated for a charge-cluster glass in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$CsZn(SCN)$_4$ using electron transport measurements. The temperature evolution of the relaxation time obeys the Arrhenius law, indicating that the glass-forming charge liquid can be classified as a "`strong" liquid in the scheme of canonical structural-glass formers. X-ray diffuse scattering further reveals that the spatial growth of charge clusters in the charge liquid is frozen below the glass transition temperature, indicating an intrinsic relationship between dynamics and structure in the charge-cluster glass.

Polarization Switching Ability Dependent on Multidomain Topology in a Uniaxial Organic Ferroelectric

The switching of electric polarization induced by electric fields -a fundamental functionality of ferroelectrics- is closely associated with the motions of the domain walls that separate regions with distinct polarization directions. Therefore, understanding domain-walls dynamics is of essential importance for advancing ferroelectric applications. In this Letter, we show that the topology of the multidomain structure can have an intrinsic impact on the degree of switchable polarization. Using a combination of polarization hysteresis measurements and piezoresponse force microscopy on a uniaxial organic ferroelectric, alpha-6,6'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridinium chloranilate, we found that the head-to-head (or tail-to-tail) charged domain walls are strongly pinned and thus impede the switching process; in contrast, if the charged domain walls are replaced with electrically neutral antiparallel domain walls, bulk polarization switching is achieved. Our findings suggest that manipulation of the multidomain topology can potentially control the switchable polarization.

Systematic Variations in the Charge-Glass-Forming Ability of Geometrically Frustrated $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$ Organic Conductors

The critical cooling rate $R_{\rm c}$ above which charge ordering is kinetically avoided upon cooling, which results in charge-glass formation, was investigated for the geometrically frustrated system $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$. X-ray diffraction experiments revealed that $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$TlCo(SCN)$_4$ exhibits a horizontally charge-ordered state, and kinetic avoidance of this state requires rapid cooling of faster than 150 K/min. This value is markedly higher than that reported for two other isostructural $θ$-type compounds, thus demonstrating the lower charge-glass-forming ability of $X$ $=$ TlCo(SCN)$_4$. In accounting for the systematic variations of $R_{\rm c}$ among the three $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2X$, we found that stronger charge frustration leads to superior charge-glass former. Our results suggest that charge frustration tends to slow the kinetics of charge ordering.

Charge-cluster glass in an organic conductor

Geometrically frustrated spin systems often do not exhibit long-range ordering, resulting in either quantum-mechanically disordered states, such as quantum spin liquids, or classically disordered states, such as spin ices or spin glasses. Geometric frustration may play a similar role in charge ordering, potentially leading to unconventional electronic states without long-range order; however, there are no previous experimental demonstrations of this phenomenon. Here, we show that a charge-cluster glass evolves upon cooling in the absence of long-range charge ordering for an organic conductor with a triangular lattice, theta-(BEDT-TTF)2RbZn(SCN)4. A combination of time-resolved transport measurements and x-ray diffraction reveal that the charge-liquid phase has charge clusters that fluctuate extremely slowly (<10-100 Hz) and heterogeneously. Upon further cooling, the cluster dynamics freeze, and a charge-cluster glass is formed. Surprisingly, these observations correspond to recent ideas regarding the structural glass formation of supercooled liquids, indicating that a glass-forming charge liquid relates correlated-electron physics to glass physics in soft matter.

The change of electronic state and crystal structure by post-annealing in superconducting SrFe2(As0.65P0.35)2

We investigated the annealing effects on the physical properties of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($x=0.35$). The superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) increased from 26 K to 33 K by annealing. The X-ray diffraction measurement suggested that the annealed crystals have the shorter/longer $a/c$-axes and the larger pnictogen height $h_\mathrm{Pn}$. This must be linked to the $T_c$-enhancement by annealing. Moreover, it was found that the post-annealing decreased the electronic specific heat coefficient at $T$=0 K, $γ_r$, and changed the magnetic field ($H$) dependence from sub-linear $γ_r\propto H^{0.7}$ to $H$-linear $γ_r\propto H$. This can be attributed the electronic change from dirty to clean superconductors with $s_{\pm}$ gap.

Ferrimagnetism and spontaneous ordering of transition-metals in La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films

We report on atomic ordering of B-site transition-metals and magnetic properties of epitaxial La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite films grown by pulsed-laser deposition under various conditions. The highest ordered sample exhibited a fraction of antisite-disorder of only 0.05 and a saturation magnetization of ~2μ_{B} per formula unit at 5 K. The result is consistent with the antiferromagnetic ordering of local spin moment (3d^{3}_{\downarrow}3d^{5}_{\uparrow}; S = -3/2+5/2 = 1). Therefore, the magnetic ground state of La2CrFeO6 double-perovskite that has been long debate is unambiguously revealed to be ferrimagnetic. Our results present a wide opportunity to explore novel magnetic properties of binary transition-metal perovskites upon epitaxial stabilization of the ordered phase.

Pseudogap of metallic layered nickelate R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu) crystals measured using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We have investigated charge dynamics and electronic structures for single crystals of metallic layered nickelates, R2-xSrxNiO4 (R=Nd, Eu), isostructural to La2-xSrxCuO4. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the barely-metallic Eu0.9Sr1.1NiO4 (R=Eu, x=1.1) has revealed a large hole surface of x2-y2 character with a high-energy pseudogap of the same symmetry and comparable magnitude with those of underdoped (x<0.1) cuprates, although the antiferromagnetic interactions are one order of magnitude smaller. This finding strongly indicates that the momentum-dependent pseudogap feature in the layered nickelate arises from the real-space charge correlation.
