Maximizing the density of KtK_t's in graphs of bounded degree and clique number

Zykov showed in 1949 that among graphs on nn vertices with clique number ω(G)≤ωω(G) \le ω, the Turán graph Tω(n)T_ω(n) maximizes not only the number of edges but also the number of copies of KtK_t for each size tt. The problem of maximizing the number of copies of KtK_t has also been studied within other classes of graphs, such as those on nn vertices with maximum degree Δ(G)≤ΔΔ(G) \le Δ. We combine these restrictions and investigate which graphs with Δ(G)≤ΔΔ(G) \le Δ and ω(G)≤ωω(G) \le ω maximize the number of copies of KtK_t per vertex. We define ft(Δ,ω)f_t(Δ,ω) as the supremum of ρtρ_t, the number of copies of KtK_t per vertex, among such graphs, and show for fixed tt and ωω that ft(Δ,ω)=(1+o(1))ρt(Tω(Δ+⌊Δω−1⌋))f_t(Δ,ω) = (1+o(1))ρ_t(T_ω(Δ+\lfloor\fracΔ{ω-1}\rfloor)). For two infinite families of pairs (Δ,ω)(Δ,ω), we determine ft(Δ,ω)f_t(Δ,ω) exactly for all t≥3t\ge 3. For another we determine ft(Δ,ω)f_t(Δ,ω) exactly for the two largest possible clique sizes. Finally, we demonstrate that not every pair (Δ,ω)(Δ,ω) has an extremal graph that simultaneously maximizes the number of copies of KtK_t per vertex for every size tt.

A contact model for the yielding of caked granular materials

We present a visco-elastic coupling model between caked spheres, suitable for DEM simulations, which incorporates the different loading mechanisms (tension, shear, bending, torsion) in a combined manner and allows for a derivation of elastic and failure properties on a common basis. In pull, shear, and torsion failure tests with agglomerates of up to 10000 particles, we compare the failure criterion to different approximative variants of it, with respect to accuracy and computational cost. The failure of the agglomerates, which behave according to elastic parameters derived from the contact elasticity, gives also insight into the relative relevance of the different load modes.

Electron gas polarization effect induced by heavy H-like ions of moderate velocities channeled in a silicon crystal

We report on the observation of a strong perturbation of the electron gas induced by 20 MeV/u U91+^{91+} ions and 13 MeV/u Pb81+^{81+} ions channeled in silicon crystals. This collective response (wake effect) in-duces a shift of the continuum energy level by more than 100 eV, which is observed by means of Radiative Electron Capture into the K and L-shells of the projectiles. We also observe an increase of the REC probability by 20-50% relative to the probability in a non-perturbed electron gas. The energy shift is in agreement with calculations using the linear response theory, whereas the local electron density enhancement is much smaller than predicted by the same model. This shows that, for the small values of the adiabaticity parameter achieved in our experiments, the density fluctuations are not strongly localized at the vicinity of the heavy ions.
