Universal to Non-Universal Transition of the statistics of Rare Events During the Spread of Random Walks

Particle hopping is a common feature in heterogeneous media. We explore such motion by using the widely applicable formalism of the continuous time random walk and focus on the statistics of rare events. Numerous experiments have shown that the decay of the positional probability density function P (X, t), describing the statistics of rare events, exhibits universal exponential decay. We show that such universality ceases to exist once the threshold of exponential distribution of particle hops is crossed. While the mean hop is not diverging and can attain a finite value; the transition itself is critical. The exponential universality of rare events arises due to the contribution of all the different states occupied during the process. Once the reported threshold is crossed, a single large event determines the statistics. In this realm, the big jump principle replaces the large deviation principle, and the spatial part of the decay is unaffected by the temporal properties of rare events.

General approach to stochastic resetting

We address the effect of stochastic resetting on diffusion and subdiffusion process. For diffusion we find that MSD relaxes to a constant only when the distribution of reset times possess finite mean and variance. In this case, the leading order contribution to the PDF of a Gaussian propagator under resetting exhibits a cusp independent of the specific details of the reset time distribution. For subdiffusion we derive the PDF in Laplace space for arbitrary resetting protocol. Resetting at constant rate allows evaluation of the PDF in terms of H-function. We analyze the steady state and derive the rate function governing the relaxation behavior. For a subdiffusive process the steady state could exist even if the distribution of reset times possesses only finite mean.

Inclusive $α$ Production for $^{6}$Li+$^{51}$V System

Measurement of angular distributions and energy spectra of $α$ and deuterons through breakup, transfer and incomplete fusion processes to dis-entangle their relative contributions and to investigate relative importance of breakup-fusion compared to transfer. Inclusive $α$ production cross-sections have been measured for $^6$Li + $^{51}$V system near Coulomb barrier energies. Theoretical calculations for estimation of various reaction channels contributing to $α$ production have been performed with finite range coupled reaction method using \textsc{FRESCO} code. The cross-sections from non-capture breakup (NCBU) ($α$ + \textit{d}) and 1\textit{n}, 1\textit{p}, and 1\textit{d} transfer channels, compound nuclear decay channel and incomplete fusion (ICF) leading to $α$ production were estimated to get the cumulative production cross-sections. Contributions from breakup, transfer and incomplete fusion channels could reproduce the integral direct $α$ production cross-sections and their angular distributions quite well. The direct $α$ production cross-sections are in agreement with other targets. The $α$ production cross-sections are higher compared to the deuteron production. Kinematic analysis of the energy spectra of $α$ particles and deuterons suggest that $α$ particle spectra is dominated by breakp-fusion and deuteron spectra have contribution of breakup and transfer reactions. A systematic study of direct $α$ production with various targets follow a universal behavior on average but noticeable differences are observed for different targets. A ratio of $α$ and deuteron yields for a wide mass range of targets shows a saturation above barrier and an increasing production of $α$ particles relative to deuteron around Coulomb barrier.

Effect of magnetic field on the laterally colliding plasma plumes

An experimental investigation of laser produced colliding plasma of aluminium target in the presence of external magnetic field in vacuum is done. Characteristic parameters and line emission of plasma plume in the presence of magnetic field are compared with those for field free case. Axial expansion of the plasma is slowed down in the presence of magnetic field as compared to the field free case. Contrary to the field free case no sharp interaction zone is observed. Higher electron temperature and increased ionic line emission from singly as well as doubly ionized aluminium can be attributed to the Joule heating phenomenon.

Numerical study of the effect of mass of the background gas on the lateral interactions of two plasma plumes at high pressure

The characteristic of the lateral interaction of two plasma plumes in $Ar$ background gas at high pressures was reported in recent publication [Yadav {\it et. al.}, J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. {\bf 50}, 053421 (2017)]. Further we have investigated the interaction characteristics of plumes in $He$, $Ne$, $Ar$ and $Xe$ background gases to see the effect of mass on the interaction. The present work illustrate the applicability of the present model for theoretical understanding of dynamics, structure, density variation, shock wave formations and their interactions of two propagating plasma plumes in a wide range of ambient conditions. The formation of interaction region, geometrical shape and strength of the shock fronts and subsequent regular and Mach reflections in accordance with the nature and pressure of ambient gas are successfully captured in the simulations. The observed results are supported by the reported experimental observations under identical conditions.

Transport and tumbling of polymers in viscoelastic shear flow

Polymers in shear flow are ubiquitous and we study their motion in a viscoelastic fluid under shear. Employing dumbbells as representative, we find that the center of mass motion follows: $\langle x^2_c(t) \rangle \sim \dotγ^2 t^{α+2}, ~0< α<1$, generalizing the earlier result: $\langle x^2_c(t) \rangle \sim \dotγ^2t^3 ~(α= 1)$. Motion of the relative coordinate, on the other hand, is quite intriguing in that $\langle x^2_r(t) \rangle \sim t^β$ with $β= 2(1-α)$ for small $α$. This implies nonexistence of the steady state. We remedy this pathology by introducing a nonlinear spring with FENE-LJ interaction and study tumbling dynamics of the dumbbell. The overall effect of viscoelasticity is to slow down the dynamics in the experimentally observed ranges of the Weissenberg number. We numerically obtain the characteristic time of tumbling and show that small changes in $α$ result in large changes in tumbling times.

Synchronization in an evolving network

In this work we study the dynamics of Kuramoto oscillators on a stochastically evolving network whose evolution is governed by the phases of the individual oscillators and degree distribution. Synchronization is achieved after a threshold connection density is reached. This cumulative effect of topology and dynamics has many real-world implications, where synchronization in a system emerges as a collective property of its components in a self-organizing manner. The synchronous state remains stable as long as the connection density remains above the threshold value, with additional links providing resilience against network fluctuations.

Investigation of phonon dynamics of perovskite multiferroic manganites: RMnO3 (R=Tb, Dy, Ho)

We have used a shell model to study the phonon dynamics of multiferroic manganites RMnO3 (R= Tb, Dy, Ho). The calculated phonon dynamical properties, crystal structure, Raman frequencies and specific heat are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data. Besides, the phonon density of states, elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves along high symmetry directions (sigma, delta and lambda) have also been computed. A zone-center imaginary Au mode is revealed in these phonon dispersion curves, which indicates the occurrence of metastability of the perovskite phase. The Gibbs free energy values of orthorhombic phase, when compared with those of hexagonal phase, indicate the possibility of coexistence of these two phases of these multiferroic manganites under ambient conditions.

New Physics at the LHC. A Les Houches Report: Physics at TeV Colliders 2009 - New Physics Working Group

We present a collection of signatures for physics beyond the standard model that need to be explored at the LHC. First, are presented various tools developed to measure new particle masses in scenarios where all decays include an unobservable particle. Second, various aspects of supersymmetric models are discussed. Third, some signatures of models of strong electroweak symmetry are discussed. In the fourth part, a special attention is devoted to high mass resonances, as the ones appearing in models with warped extra dimensions. Finally, prospects for models with a hidden sector/valley are presented. Our report, which includes brief experimental and theoretical reviews as well as original results, summarizes the activities of the "New Physics" working group for the "Physics at TeV Colliders" workshop (Les Houches, France, 8-26 June, 2009).

Suppression of the critical temperature of superconducting NdFeAs(OF) single crystals by Kondo-like defect sites induced by alpha-particle irradiation

We report a comprehensive investigation of the suppression of the critical temperature Tc of NdFeAs(OF) single crystal by alpha-particle irradiation. Our data indicate that irradiation defects produce both nonmagnetic and magnetic scattering, resulting in the Kondo-like excess resistance $Δρ(T)\propto ln T$ over 2 decades in temperatures above $T_c$. Despite high densities of irradiation defects, the dose at which $T_c$ is suppressed to zero is comparable to that for MgB2 but is well above the corresponding values for cuprates.

The derivative of the topological susceptibility at zero momentum and an estimate of $η'$ mass in the chiral limit

The anomaly-anomaly correlator is studied using QCD sum rules. Using the matrix elements of anomaly between vacuum and pseudoscalars $π, eta$ and $η'$, the derivative of correlator $chi'(0)$ is evaluated and found to be $\approx 1.82 \times 10^{-3}$ GeV$^2$. Assuming that $χ'(0)$ has no significant dependence on quark masses, the mass of $η'$ in the chiral limit is found to be $\approx$723 MeV. The same calculation also yields for the singlet pseudoscalar decay constant in the chiral limit a value of $\approx 178$ MeV.

The role of polarized positrons and electrons in revealing fundamental interactions at the Linear Collider

The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.
