cardiGAN: A Generative Adversarial Network Model for Design and Discovery of Multi Principal Element Alloys

Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs), inclusive of high entropy alloys (HEAs), continue to attract significant research attention owing to their potentially desirable properties. Although MPEAs remain under extensive research, traditional (i.e. empirical) alloy production and testing is both costly and time-consuming, partly due to the inefficiency of the early discovery process which involves experiments on a large number of alloy compositions. It is intuitive to apply machine learning in the discovery of this novel class of materials, of which only a small number of potential alloys has been probed to date. In this work, a proof-of-concept is proposed, combining generative adversarial networks (GANs) with discriminative neural networks (NNs), to accelerate the exploration of novel MPEAs. By applying the GAN model herein, it was possible to directly generate novel compositions for MPEAs, and to predict their phases. To verify the predictability of the model, alloys designed by the model are presented and a candidate produced; as validation. This suggests that the model herein offers an approach that can significantly enhance the capacity and efficiency of development of novel MPEAs.

Photoinduced modulation of refractive index in Langmuir-Blodgett films of Azo-based H-shaped liquid crystal molecules

The development of optically active area consisting of organic molecules are essential for the devices like optical switches and waveguides, as it can be easily maneuvered by the application of suitable electromagnetic (EM) waves. In this article, we report the development of a photoactive surface by the deposition of a single layer of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) film of a novel H-shaped liquid crystal (HLC) molecule. The synthesized HLC molecules possess azo-groups and nitro-groups. The azo-group can be isomerized (trans-cis transformation) by irradiating them with ultraviolet (UV) light. The nitro-group can provide sufficient amphiphilicity to the HLC molecules to form a stable Langmuir monolayer at air-water interface. The Langmuir monolayer of the HLC molecules exhibited gas and liquid-like phases. A single layer of LB film of HLC molecules was deposited on a gold chip of a home-built surface plasmon resonance (SPR) instrument. The azo-groups of the molecules in LB film was excited by UV irradiation leading to a change in morphology due to trans-cis transformation. Such a change in morphology can lead to a miniscule change in refractive index (RI) of the LB film. SPR is a label free and highly sensitive optical phenomenon for the measurement of such changes in RI. In our studies, we found systematic changes in the resonance angle of the LB film of HLC molecules as a function of intensity of the UV irradiation. We measured switch-on and switch-off intensity which may suggest that the LB film of HLC molecules can find applications in optical switches or waveguides.

On exact solutions, conservation laws and invariant analysis of the generalized Rosenau-Hyman equation

In this paper, the nonlinear Rosenau-Hyman equation with time dependent variable coefficients is considered for investigating its invariant properties, exact solutions and conservation laws. Using Lie classical method, we derive symmetries admitted by considered equation. Symmetry reductions are performed for each components of optimal set. Also nonclassical approach is employed on considered equation to find some additional supplementary symmetries and corresponding symmetry reductions are performed. Later three kinds of exact solutions of considered equation are presented graphically for different parameters. In addition, local conservation laws are constructed for considered equation by multiplier approach.

A model for anomalous moisture diffusion through a polymer-clay nanocomposite

Experimental data are reported on moisture diffusion and the elastoplastic response of an intercalated nanocomposite with vinyl ester resin matrix and montmorillonite clay filler at room temperature. Observations in diffusion tests show that water transport in the neat resin is Fickian, whereas it becomes anomalous (non-Fickian) with the growth of the clay content. This transition is attributed to immobilization of penetrant molecules on the surfaces of hydrophilic clay layers. Observations in uniaxial tensile tests demonstrate that the response of vinyl ester resin is strongly elastoplastic, whereas an increase in the clay content results in a severe decrease of plastic strains observed as a noticeable reduction of curvatures of the stress--strain diagrams. This is explained by slowing down of molecular mobility in the host matrix driven by confinement of chains in galleries between platelets. Constitutive equations are developed for the anomalous moisture diffusion through and the elastoplastic behavior of a nanocomposite. Adjustable parameters in these relations are found by fitting the experimental data. Fair agreement is demonstrated between the observations and the results of numerical simulation. A striking similarity is revealed between changes in diffusivity, ultimate water uptake and the rate of plastic flow with an increase in the clay content.
