Thermopower in the quantum Hall regime

We consider the effect of disorder on the themopower in quantum Hall systems. For a sample in the Corbino geometry, where dissipative currents are not carried by edge states, we find that thermopower behaves at high temperatures like a system with a gap and has a maximum which increases as the temperature is reduced. At lower temperatures this maximum reduces as a function of temperature as a result of tunneling across saddle points in the background potential. Our model assumes that the mean saddle point height varies linearly with the deviation in filling factor from the quantized value. We test this hypothesis against observations for the dissipative electrical conductance as a function of temperature and field and find good agreement with experiment around the minimum.

Localized quasiholes and the Majorana fermion in fractional quantum Hall state at nu=5/2 via direct diagonalization

Using exact diagonalization in the spherical geometry, we investigate systems of localized quasiholes at nu=5/2 for interactions interpolating between the pure Coulomb and the three-body interaction for which the Moore-Read state is the exact ground state. We show that the charge e/4 quasihole can be easily localized by means of a delta-function pinning potential. Using a tuned smooth pinning potential, the quasihole radius can be limited to approximately three magnetic length units. For systems of two quasiholes, adiabatic continuity between the Moore-Read and the Coulomb limit holds for the ground state, while for four quasiholes, the lowest two energy states exhibit adiabatic continuity. This implies the existence of a Majorana fermion for pure Coulomb interaction. We also present preliminary results in the Coulomb limit for braiding in systems containing four quasiholes, with up to 14 electrons, diagonalizing in the full spin-polarized sector of the second Landau-level Hilbert space.

Model for Dissipative Conductance in Fractional Quantum Hall States

We present a model of dissipative transport in the fractional quantum Hall regime. Our model takes account of tunneling through saddle points in the effective potential for excitations created by impurities. We predict the temperature range over which activated behavior is observed and explain why this range nearly always corresponds to around a factor two in temperature in both integer quantum Hall and fractional quantum Hall systems. We identify the ratio of the gap observed in the activated behavior and the temperature of the inflection point in the Arrhenius plot as an important diagnostic for determining the importance of tunneling in real samples.

The Fractional Quantum Hall state at nu=5/2 and the Moore-Read Pfaffian

Results from exact diagonalization show that the spin-polarized Coulomb ground state at nu=5/2 is adiabatically connected with the Moore-Read wave function for systems with up to Nel = 16 electrons on the surface of a sphere. Varying the Haldane pseudopotentials v1 and v3, keeping all others at their value for Coulomb interaction, energy gap and (v1,v3)-dependent ground state overlap with the Moore-Read state form two ridges whose peak positions and extent in the (v1,v3)-plane essentially coincide. Thus, the physics of the Coulomb ground state at nu=5/2 is indeed captured by the Moore-Read state and that non-Abelian statistics can be expected under experimental conditions. Such adiabatic connection is not observed at nu=1/2, unless the width of the interface wave function and/or Landau level mixing effects are sufficiently large. Varying the width, an excitation gap is found for all system sizes Nel \le 18 studied. However, its system size dependence casts doubt on the existence of a Moore-Read-phase at nu=1/2 in the thermodynamic limit.
