Spin-selective insulators in Bose-Fermi mixtures

We investigate an imbalanced mixture composed of two-color fermions and scalar bosons in the hard-core limit, considering repulsive and attractive interspecies and intraspecies interactions. The interplay between commensurability, repulsive interactions and imbalance generates three insulating phases: a mixed Mott state and two spin-selective insulators characterized by the commensurability relations $ρ_B+ρ^{\uparrow,(\downarrow)}_F=1$. For an attractive coupling between fermions and bosons, we found the relations $ρ_B-ρ^{\uparrow,(\downarrow)}_F=0$ for the spin-selective insulators. State-of-the-art cold-atoms setups constitute ideal platforms to implement these unveiled insulating states and verify their commensurability relations.

Universality and thermoelectric transport properties of quantum dot systems

We discuss the temperature-dependent thermoelectric transport properties of semiconductor nanostructures comprising a quantum dot coupled to quantum wires: the thermal dependence of the electrical conductance, thermal conductance, and thermopower. We explore the universality of the thermoelectric properties in the temperature range associated with the Kondo crossover. In this thermal range, general arguments indicate that any equilibrium property's temperature dependence should be a universal function of the ratio $T^{*}=T/T_{K}$, where $T_{K}$ is the Kondo temperature. Considering the particle-hole symmetric, spin-degenerate Anderson model, the zero-bias electrical conductance has already been shown to map linearly onto a universal conductance through a quantum dot embedded or side-coupled to a quantum wire. Employing rigorous renormalization-group arguments, we calculate universal thermoelectric transport coefficients that allow us to extend this result to the thermopower and the thermal conductance. We present numerical renormalization-group results to illustrate the physics in our findings. Applying the universal thermoelectric coefficients to recent experimental results of the electrical conductance and thermo-voltages versus $V_{gate}$, at different temperatures in the Kondo regime, we calculate all the thermoelectric properties and obtain simple analytical fitting functions that can be used to predict the experimental results of these properties. However, we cannot check all of them, due to the lack of available experimental results over a broad temperature range.

Spin-dependent beating patterns in thermoelectric properties: Filtering the carriers of the heat flux in a Kondo adatom system

We theoretically investigate the thermoelectric properties of a spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas hosting a Kondo adatom hybridized with an STM tip. Such a setup is treated within the single-impurity Anderson model in combination with the atomic approach for the Green's functions. Due to the spin dependence of the Fermi wavenumbers the electrical and thermal conductances, together with thermopower and Lorenz number reveal beating patterns as function of the STM tip position in the Kondo regime. In particular, by tuning the lateral displacement of the tip with respect to the adatom vicinity, the temperature and the position of the adatom level, one can change the sign of the Seebeck coefficient through charge and spin. This opens a possibility of the microscopic control of the heat flux analogously to that established for the electrical current.

Real-Time Dynamics of a Spin Chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interactions: Spiral Formation and Quantum Spin Oscillations

We studied the non-equilibrium short-time dynamics of a spin-1/2 chain with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions after a sudden quench by a transverse field. We found that inhomogeneous spin-spirals with opposite chiralities propagate from the edges towards the center of the chain. This propagation is accompanied by quantum spin oscillations which decay asymptotically with time. A theoretical description of this phenomenon is given to a good accuracy with the help of numerical calculations with the adaptive time-dependent density matrix renormalization group algorithm.

Phase diagram of the $CuO_{3}$ chains in $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+X}$ and $PrBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+X}$

We use a mapping of the multiband Hubbard model for $CuO_{3}$ chains in $RBa_{2}Cu_{3}0_{6+x}$ (R=Y or a rare earth) onto a $t-J$ model and the description of the charge dynamics of the latter in terms pf s spinless model, to study the electronic structure of the chains. We briefly review results for the optical conductivity and we calculate the quantum phase diagram of quarter filled chains including Coulomb repulsion up to that between next-nearest-neighbor $Cu$ atoms $V_{2}$, using the resulting effective Hamiltonian, mapped onto an XXZ chain, and the method of crossing of excitation spectra. The method gives accurate results for the boundaries of the metallic phase in this case. The inclusion of $V_{2}$ greatly enhances the region of metallic behavior of the chains.
