Almost pure $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 1/2$ Mott state of In$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ in the limit of reduced inter-site hopping

The pyrochlore iridate In$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is a strong $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 1/2$ Mott insulator with frustrated magnetism. Despite the large trigonal crystal field, a small admixture of $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 3/2$ component in the $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 1/2$ bands and a small splitting of $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 3/2$ bands are observed as compared with other pyrochlore iridates A$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ (A: trivalent cation). We argue that the reduced inter-site hopping between the $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 1/2$ and the $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 3/2$ manifold plays a predominant role in the distinct behavior of In$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ compared with other A$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. The effect of the intersite hopping should not be dismissed in the local physics of spin-orbital-entangled $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 1/2$ Mott insulators.

Persistent paramagnons deep in the metallic phase of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$

We have studied the magnetic excitations of electron-doped Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.10$) using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L$_3$-edge. The long range magnetic order is rapidly lost with increasing $x$, but two-dimensional short-range order (SRO) and dispersive magnon excitations with nearly undiminished spectral weight persist well into the metallic part of the phase diagram. The magnons in the SRO phase are heavily damped and exhibit anisotropic softening. Their dispersions are well described by a pseudospin-1/2 Heisenberg model with exchange interactions whose spatial range increases with doping. We also find a doping-independent high-energy magnetic continuum, which is not described by this model. The spin-orbit excitons arising from the pseudospin-3/2 manifold of the Ir ions broaden substantially in the SRO phase, but remain largely separated from the low-energy magnons. Pseudospin-1/2 models are therefore a good starting point for the theoretical description of the low-energy magnetic dynamics of doped iridates.

Hyper-honeycomb iridate $β$-Li2IrO3 as a platform for Kitaev magnetism

The realization of Kitaev spin liquid, where spins on a honeycomb lattice are coupled ferromagnetically by bond-dependent anisotropic interactions, has been a sought-after dream. 5d iridium oxides $α$-Li2IrO3 and $α$-Na2IrO3 with a honeycomb lattice of Jeff = 1/2 moments recently emerged as a possible materialization. Strong signature of Kitaev physics, however, was not captured. Here we report the discovery of a complex iridium oxide $β$-Li2IrO3 with Jeff = 1/2 moments on "hyper-honeycomb" lattice, a three-dimensional analogue of honeycomb lattice. A positive Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_{CW}$ ~ 40 K indicated dominant ferromagnetic interactions among Jeff = 1/2 moments in $β$-Li2IrO3. A magnetic ordering with a small entropy change was observed at Tc = 38 K, which, with the application of magnetic field of only 3 T, changed to a fully polarized state of Jeff = 1/2 moments. Those results imply that hyper-honeycomb beta-Li2IrO3 is located in the vicinity to a Kitaev spin liquid.

Structural instability of EuTiO3 from X-ray powder diffraction

We have recently predicted and subsequently verified experimentally by specific heat measurements that EuTiO3 undergoes a structural phase transition at elevated temperature TS = 282 K. The origin of the phase transition has been attributed to the softening of a transverse acoustic mode stemming from an oxygen octahedral rotation analogous to SrTiO3. Here we demonstrate that the theoretical interpretation is correct by using high resolution laboratory X-ray powder diffraction which evidences a cubic to tetragonal phase transition in EuTiO3. The room temperature structure could be refined in with a = 3.9082(2) Å and at 100 K the refinement in the tetragonal space group resulted in a = 5.5192(2) and c = 7.8164(8) Å.
