Crystal dynamics and thermal properties of neptunium dioxide

We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the lattice dynamics and thermal properties of the actinide dioxide NpO$_2$. The energy-wavevector dispersion relation for normal modes of vibration propagating along the $[001]$, $[110]$, and $[111]$ high-symmetry lines in NpO$_2$ at room temperature has been determined by measuring the coherent one-phonon scattering of X-rays from a $\sim$1.2 mg single-crystal specimen, the largest available single crystal for this compound. The results are compared against ab initio phonon dispersions computed within the first-principles density functional theory in the generalized gradient approximation plus Hubbard $U$ correlation (GGA+$U$) approach, taking into account third-order anharmonicity effects in the quasiharmonic approximation. Good agreement with the experiment is obtained for calculations with an on-site Coulomb parameter $U = 4$ eV and Hund's exchange $J= 0.6$ eV in line with previous electronic structure calculations. We further compute the thermal expansion, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, phonon linewidth, and thermal phonon softening, and compare with available experiments. The theoretical and measured heat capacities are in close agreement with another. About 27% of the calculated thermal conductivity is due to phonons with energy higher than 25 meV ($\sim$ 6 THz ), suggesting an important role of high-energy optical phonons in the heat transport. The simulated thermal expansion reproduces well the experimental data up to about 1000 K, indicating a failure of the quasiharmonic approximation above this limit.

Gallium substitution in PuCoGa5

The substitution of gallium by aluminum, germanium, tin and indium in PuCoGa5, the actinide-based superconductor with the highest critical temperature, has been investigated. Only systems with 20% substitution by Al and Ge (i.e. PuCoGa4Al and PuCoGa4Ge) have been successfully synthesized by annealing arc-melted samples. X-ray powder diffraction refinements indicate an enhanced c/a ratio in these two compounds but the magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a large reduction of the critical temperature Tc compared to PuCoGa5. DFT+ED calculations indicate significant changes in the Fermi surface, probably related to the decrease of Tc, in these compounds. In addition, the isotopic effect of the atomic mass of gallium, using 69Ga and 71Ga isotopes, was also investigated without observable influence on the critical temperature of PuCoGa5.

Synthesis and properties of A$_x$V$_2$Al$_{20}$ (A = Th, U, Np, Pu) ternary actinide aluminides

Polycrystalline samples of A$_x$V$_2$Al$_{20}$ (A = Ce, Th, U, Np, Pu; 0.7 =< x =< 1.0) actinide intermetallics were synthesized using the arc-melting method. Crystal structure studies were performed by means of powder x-ray diffraction and the Rietveld refinement method. All studied compounds crystallize in the CeCr$_{2}$Al$_{20}$-type structure (space group Fd-3m, no. 227) with the actinide or Ce atom located in the oversized cage formed by Al atoms. Comparison of the crystallographic results with the reported data for LnV$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ (Ln = lanthanoids) counterparts reveals distinctly different behavior of the lanthanide- and actinide-bearing compounds. This difference is suggested to be caused by fairly localized character of the 4f electrons, whereas itinerant character of the 5f electrons is likely seen for U- and Np-containing phases. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements did not reveal any magnetic ordering in U$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, Np$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ and Pu$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ down to 2.5 K. A small anomaly in low-temperature specific heat of Ce$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, U$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$, and Np$_{0.8}$V$_{2}$Al$_{20}$ is observed, likely arising from a low-energy Einstein mode.

Magnetic polarization of the americium $J = 0$ ground state in AmFe$_{2}$

Trivalent americium has a non-magnetic ($J$ = 0) ground state arising from the cancelation of the orbital and spin moments. However, magnetism can be induced by a large molecular field if Am$^{3+}$ is embedded in a ferromagnetic matrix. Using the technique of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, we show that this is the case in AmFe$_2$. Since $\langle J_z \rangle$ = 0, the spin component is exactly twice as large as the orbital one, the total Am moment is opposite to that of Fe, and the magnetic dipole operator $\langle T_{z} \rangle$ can be determined directly; we discuss the progression of the latter across the actinide series.

Antiferromagnetic ground state in NpCoGe

NpCoGe, the neptunium analogue of the ferromagnetic superconductor UCoGe, has been investigated by dc-magnetization, ac-susceptibility, specific heat, electrical resistivity, Hall effect, 237Np Moessbauer spectroscopy and LSDA calculations. NpCoGe exhibits an antiferromagnetic ground state with a Neel temperature TN = 13 K and an average ordered magnetic moment <mNp> = 0.80 mB. The magnetic phase diagram has been determined and shows that the antiferromagnetic structure is destroyed by the application of a magnetic field (around 3 T). The value of the isomer shift suggests a Np3+ charge state (configuration 5f4). A high Sommerfeld coefficient value for NpCoGe (170 mJ mol-1K-2) is inferred from specific heat. LSDA calculations indicate strong magnetic anisotropy and easy magnetization along the c-axis. Moessbauer data and calculated exchange interactions support the possible occurrence of an elliptical spin spiral structure in NpCoGe. The comparison with NpRhGe and uranium analogues suggests the leading role of 5f-d hybridization, the rather delocalized character of 5f electrons in NpCoGe and the possible proximity of NpRuGe or NpFeGe to a magnetic quantum critical point.

Low temperature magnetic properties of NpNi$_5$

We present the result of an extended experimental characterization of the hexagonal intermetallic Haucke compound NpNi$_{5}$. By combining macroscopic and shell-specific techniques, we determine the 5$f$-shell occupation number $n_f$ close to 4 for the Np ions, together with orbital and spin components of the ordered moment in the ferromagnetic phase below T$_C$ = 16 K ($μ_{S}$ = -1.88~$μ_{B}$ and $μ_{L}$ = 3.91~$μ_{B}$). The apparent coexistence of ordered and disordered phases observed in the Mössbauer spectra is explained in terms of slow relaxation between the components of a quasi-triplet ground state. The ratio between the expectation value of the magnetic dipole operator and the spin magnetic moment ($3\langle T_{z}\rangle/ \langle S_{z}\rangle$ = +1.43) is positive and large, suggesting a localized character of the 5$f$ electrons. The angular part of the spin-orbit coupling ($\langle\vec{\ell}\cdot\vec{s}\rangle$ = -5.55) is close to the value of -6.25 calculated for trivalent Np ions in intermediate coupling approximation. The results are discussed against the prediction of first-principle electronic structure calculations based on the spin-polarized local spin density approximation plus Hubbard interaction, and of a mean field model taking into account crystal field and exchange interactions.

Multipolar, magnetic and vibrational lattice dynamics in the low temperature phase of uranium dioxide

We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed with triple-axis spectrometers to investigate the low-temperature collective dynamics in the ordered phase of uranium dioxide. The results are in excellent agreement with the predictions of mean-field RPA calculations emphasizing the importance of multipolar superexchange interactions. By comparing neutron scattering intensities in different polarization channels and at equivalent points in different Brillouin zones, we show the mixed magneto-vibrational-quadrupolar character of the observed excitations. The high energy resolution afforded by the cold triple-axis spectrometer allowed us to study in detail the magnon-phonon interaction giving rise to avoided crossings along the $[00ξ]$ reciprocal space direction.

Non-magnetic ground state of PuO$_2$

The correlated band theory implemented as a combination of the local density approximation with the exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model is applied to PuO$_2$. We obtain an insulating electronic structure consistent with the experimental photoemission spectra. The calculations yield the band gap of 1.8 eV and a non-magnetic singlet ground state that is characterized by a non-integer filling of the plutonium $f$ shell ($n_f\approx 4.5$). Due to sizeable hybridization of the $f$ shell with the $p$ states of oxygen, the ground state is more complex than the four-electron Russell--Saunders ${}^5{\rm I}_4$ manifold split by the crystal field. The inclusion of hybridization improves the agreement between the theory and experiment for the magnetic susceptibility.

Unexpected phase locking of magnetic fluctuations in the multi-k magnet USb

The spin waves in the multi-k antiferromagnet, USb, soften and become quasielastic well below the AFM ordering temperature, T_N. This occurs without a magnetic or structural transition. It has been suggested that this change is in fact due to de-phasing of the different multi-k components: a switch from 3-k to 1-k behaviour. In this work, we use inelastic neutron scattering with tri-directional polarisation analysis to probe the quasielastic magnetic excitations and reveal that the 3-k structure does not de-phase. More surprisingly, the paramagnetic correlations also maintain the same clear phase correlations well above T_N (up to at least 1.4T_N). This precursor regime has not been observed before in a multi-k system.

Unified character of correlation effects in unconventional Pu-based superconductors and δ-Pu

Electronic structure calculations combining the local-density approximation with an exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model show an intermediate 5f^5-5f^6-valence ground state and delocalization of the 5f^5 multiplet of the Pu atom 5f-shell in PuCoIn_5, PuCoGa_5, and δ-Pu. The 5f-local magnetic moment is compensated by a moment formed in the surrounding cloud of conduction electrons. For PuCoGa_5 and δ-Pu the compensation is complete and the Anderson impurity ground state is a singlet. For PuCoIn_5 the compensation is partial and the Pu ground state is magnetic. We suggest that the unconventional d-wave superconductivity is likely mediated by the 5f-states antiferromagnetic fluctuations in PuCoIn_5, and by valence fluctuations in PuCoGa_5.

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments and theory of transuranium Laves phase compounds

The actinide cubic Laves compounds NpAl2, NpOs2, NpFe2, and PuFe2 have been examined by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the actinide M4,5 absorption edges and Os L2,3 absorption edges. The XMCD experiments performed at the M4,5 absorption edges of Np and Pu allow us to determine the spectroscopic branching ratio, which gives information on the coupling scheme in these materials. In all materials the intermediate coupling scheme is found appropriate. Comparison with the SQUID data for NpOs2 and PuFe2 allows a determination of the individual orbital and spin magnetic moments and the magnetic dipole contribution mmd. The resulting orbital and spin magnetic moments are in good agreement with earlier values determined by neutron diffraction, and the values of mmd are non-negligible, and close to those predicted for intermediate coupling. There is a comparatively large induced moment on the Os atom in NpOs2 such that the Os contribution to the total moment per formula unit is ~30% of the total. The spin and orbital moments at the Os site are parallel, in contrast to the anti-parallel configuration of Os impurities in 3d ferromagnetic transition metals. Calculations using the LDA+U technique are reported. The ab initio computed XMCD spectra show good agreement with experimental spectra for small values (0-1eV) of the Hubbard U parameter, which underpins that 5f electrons in these compounds are relatively delocalized.

Bulk properties and electronic structure of PuFeAsO

Here we present bulk property measurements and electronic structure calculations for PuFeAsO, an actinide analogue of the iron-based rare-earth superconductors RFeAsO. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity data suggest the occurrence of an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=50 K. No further anomalies have been observed down to 2 K, the minimum temperature that we have been able to achieve. Structural measurements indicate that PuFeAsO, with its more localized 5f electrons, bears a stronger resemblance to the RFeAsO compounds with larger R ions, than NpFeAsO does.

Negative thermal expansion and antiferromagnetism in the actinide oxypnictide NpFeAsO

A neptunium analogue of the LaFeAsO tetragonal layered compound has been synthesized and characterized by a variety of experimental techniques. The occurrence of long-range magnetic order below a critical temperature T_N = 57 K is suggested by anomalies in the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and specific heat curves. Below T_N, powder neutron diffraction measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic structure of the Np sublattice, with an ordered magnetic moment of 1.70(0.07) μ_B aligned along the crystallographic c-axis. No magnetic order has been observed on the Fe sublattice, setting an upper limit of about 0.3 μ_B for the ordered magnetic moment on the iron. High resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements exclude the occurrence of lattice transformations down to 5 K, in sharp contrast to the observation of a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic distortion in the rare-earth analogues, which has been associated with the stabilization of a spin density wave on the iron sublattice. Instead, a significant expansion of the NpFeAsO lattice parameters is observed with decreasing temperature below T_N, corresponding to a relative volume change of about 0.2% and to an invar behavior between 5 and 20 K. First-principle electronic structure calculations based on the local-spin density plus Coulomb interaction and the local density plus Hubbard-I approximations provide results in good agreement with the experimental findings.

Strong-coupling d-wave superconductivity in PuCoGa_5 probed by point contact spectroscopy

A century on from its discovery, a complete fundamental understanding of superconductivity is still missing. Considerable research efforts are currently devoted to elucidating mechanisms by which pairs of electrons can bind together through the mediation of a boson field different than the one associated to the vibrations of a crystal lattice. PuCoGa_5, a 5f-electron heavy-fermion superconductor with a record critical temperature T_c=18.5 K, is one of the many compounds for which the short-range, isotropic attraction provided by simple electron-phonon coupling does not appear as an adequate glue for electron pairing. Here, we report the results of point-contact spectroscopy measurements in single crystals of PuCoGa_5. Andreev reflection structures are clearly observed in the low-temperature spectra, and unambiguously prove that the paired superconducting electrons have wavefunction with the d-wave symmetry of a four-leaf clover. A straightforward analysis of the spectra provide the amplitude of the gap and its temperature dependence, Δ(T). We obtain Δ(T -> 0) = 5.1 \pm 0.3 meV and a gap ratio, 2Δ/k_B T_c = 6.5 \pm 0.3, indicating that the compound is in the regime of strong electron-boson coupling. The gap value and its temperature dependence can be well reproduced within the Eliashberg theory for superconductivity if the spectral function of the mediating bosons has a spin-fluctuations-like shape, with a peak energy of 6.5 meV. Electronic structure calculations, combining the local density approximation with an exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model, provide a hint about the possible origin of the fluctuations.

5d-5f Electric-multipole Transitions in Uranium Dioxide Probed by Non-resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Non-resonant inelastic x ray scattering (NIXS) experiments have been performed to probe the 5d-5f electronic transitions at the uranium O(4,5) absorption edges in uranium dioxide. For small values of the scattering vector q, the spectra are dominated by dipole-allowed transitions encapsulated within the giant resonance, whereas for higher values of q the multipolar transitions of rank 3 and 5 give rise to strong and well-defined multiplet structure in the pre-edge region. The origin of the observed non-dipole multiplet structures is explained on the basis of many-electron atomic spectral calculations. The results obtained demonstrate the high potential of NIXS as a bulk-sensitive technique for the characterization of the electronic properties of actinide materials.

Direct observation of electric-quadrupolar order in UO$_{2}$

We report direct experimental evidence for long-range antiferro ordering of the electric-quadrupole moments on the U ions. Resonant x-ray scattering experiments at the uranium $M_{4}$ absorption edge show a characteristic dependence in the integrated intensity upon rotation of the crystal around the scattering vector. Although quadrupolar order in uranium dioxide was advocated already in the 1960s no experimental evidence for this phenomenon was provided until now. We conclude with a possible model to explain the phase diagram of the solid solutions of UO$_{2}$ and NpO$_{2}$. We suggest that in the region $0.30 < x < 0.75$ neither the transverse nor the longitudinal quadrupole ordering can dominate, leading to frustration and only short-range ordering.
