Utilising physics-guided deep learning to overcome data scarcity

Deep learning (DL) relies heavily on data, and the quality of data influences its performance significantly. However, obtaining high-quality, well-annotated datasets can be challenging or even impossible in many real-world applications, such as structural risk estimation and medical diagnosis. This presents a significant barrier to the practical implementation of DL in these fields. Physics-guided deep learning (PGDL) is a novel type of DL that can integrate physics laws to train neural networks. This can be applied to any systems that are controlled or governed by physics laws, such as mechanics, finance and medical applications. It has been demonstrated that, with the additional information provided by physics laws, PGDL achieves great accuracy and generalisation in the presence of data scarcity. This review provides a detailed examination of PGDL and offers a structured overview of its use in addressing data scarcity across various fields, including physics, engineering and medical applications. Moreover, the review identifies the current limitations and opportunities for PGDL in relation to data scarcity and offers a thorough discussion on the future prospects of PGDL.

Weighted Sum-Rate Maximization for Multi-IRS Aided Cooperative Transmission

This paper investigates multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) aided wireless network, where the IRSs are deployed to cooperatively assist communications between a multi-antenna base station (BS) and multiple single-antenna cell-edge users. We aim at maximizing the weighted sum rate of all the cell-edge users by jointly optimizing the BS's transmit beamforming and IRS's phase shifts. Especially, the beamforming is optimally solved by the Lagrangian method, and the phase shifts are obtained based on the Riemannian manifold conjugate gradient (RMCG) method. Numerical results show that a significant throughput is improved with aid of multiple IRSs.

Electronic and magnetic properties of dopant atoms in SnSe monolayer: a first-principles study

SnSe monolayer with orthorhombic Pnma GeS structure is an important two-dimensional (2D) indirect band gap material at room temperature. Based on first-principles density functional theory calculations, we present systematic studies on the electronic and magnetic properties of X (X = Ga, In, As, Sb) atoms doped SnSe monolayer. The calculated electronic structures show that Ga-doped system maintains semiconducting property while In-doped SnSe monolayer is half-metal. The As- and Sb- doped SnSe systems present the characteristics of n-type semiconductor. Moreover, all considered substitutional doping cases induce magnetic ground states with the magnetic moment of 1μB. In addition, the calculated formation energies also show that four types of doped systems are thermodynamic stable. These results provide a new route for the potential applications of doped SnSe monolayer in 2D photoelectronic and magnetic semiconductor devices.
