Boosting HDR Image Reconstruction via Semantic Knowledge Transfer

Recovering High Dynamic Range (HDR) images from multiple Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) images become challenging when the SDR images exhibit noticeable degradation and missing content. Leveraging scene-specific semantic priors offers a promising solution for restoring heavily degraded regions. However, these priors are typically extracted from sRGB SDR images, the domain/format gap poses a significant challenge when applying it to HDR imaging. To address this issue, we propose a general framework that transfers semantic knowledge derived from SDR domain via self-distillation to boost existing HDR reconstruction. Specifically, the proposed framework first introduces the Semantic Priors Guided Reconstruction Model (SPGRM), which leverages SDR image semantic knowledge to address ill-posed problems in the initial HDR reconstruction results. Subsequently, we leverage a self-distillation mechanism that constrains the color and content information with semantic knowledge, aligning the external outputs between the baseline and SPGRM. Furthermore, to transfer the semantic knowledge of the internal features, we utilize a Semantic Knowledge Alignment Module (SKAM) to fill the missing semantic contents with the complementary masks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our framework significantly boosts HDR imaging quality for existing methods without altering the network architecture.

EAPFusion: Intrinsic Evolving Auxiliary Prior Guidance for Infrared and Visible Image Fusion

Infrared-visible image fusion aims to create an information-rich fused image by integrating the complementary thermal saliency from infrared sensing and fine textures from visible imaging. Such accurate fusion is essential for real-world perception applications in complex scenes, including nighttime autonomous driving, search and rescue, and surveillance, and can further benefit downstream tasks such as semantic segmentation. However, most existing fusion methods rely upon static trained weights that cannot adapt to scene-specific content at inference time, and often suffer from a granularity mismatch when coarse auxiliary semantics are injected, which makes it difficult to simultaneously highlight targets and preserve details. In this work, we propose EAPFusion to address these issues by using self-evolving intrinsic priors instead of relying on external auxiliary models. Concretely, EAPFusion maintains a compact set of intrinsic priors and progressively updates them across scales. These evolved priors are utilized to dynamically generate convolutional kernels, shifting the paradigm from fixed, pre-trained filters to instance-adaptive parameters via prior-conditioned dynamic convolution. Furthermore, we design a channel-level fusion module that shuffles and interleaves infrared and visible channels, applying local channel mixing to boost cross-modal complementarity. Experiments on different datasets, including cross-dataset evaluation and semantic segmentation, show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art quantitative and qualitative fusion results, and consistently boosts downstream performance. Uncertainty-Guided Dual-Domain Learning for Reliable Skin Lesion Segmentation

Accurate skin lesion segmentation is vital for dermoscopic Computer-Aided Diagnosis. However, visual ambiguity and morphological irregularity often defeat spatial modeling, necessitating multi-domain architectures. Existing paradigms frequently overlook the active use of prediction uncertainty, leading to deterministic frameworks that suffer from blind cross-domain fusion and overfit to label noise. To address these issues, we propose the Uncertainty-Guided Dual-Domain Network (UGDD-Net). UGDD-Net introduces a novel "Glance-and-Gaze" mechanism to transform uncertainty into an active guiding signal. Specifically, the Uncertainty-Guided Bi-directional Feature Fusion (UGBFF) module uses pixel-level uncertainty to modulate spatial-spectral interactions. The Uncertainty-Guided Graph Refinement (UGGR) module constructs a topology-aware graph to propagate reliable semantic consensus and refine uncertain nodes. Finally, the Uncertainty-Guided Margin-Adaptive Loss (UGML) enforces strict constraints on confident pixels while relaxing penalties on uncertain ones to improve statistical calibration. Extensive experiments on ISIC2017, ISIC2018, PH2, and HAM10000 datasets demonstrate that UGDD-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance, especially on "Hard Samples". Our uncertainty maps align with expert inter-observer variability, providing robust interpretability for human-machine collaborative diagnosis.

Exploring and Evaluating Image Restoration Potential in Dynamic Scenes

In dynamic scenes, images often suffer from dynamic blur due to superposition of motions or low signal-noise ratio resulted from quick shutter speed when avoiding motions. Recovering sharp and clean results from the captured images heavily depends on the ability of restoration methods and the quality of the input. Although existing research on image restoration focuses on developing models for obtaining better restored results, fewer have studied to evaluate how and which input image leads to superior restored quality. In this paper, to better study an image's potential value that can be explored for restoration, we propose a novel concept, referring to image restoration potential (IRP). Specifically, We first establish a dynamic scene imaging dataset containing composite distortions and applied image restoration processes to validate the rationality of the existence to IRP. Based on this dataset, we investigate several properties of IRP and propose a novel deep model to accurately predict IRP values. By gradually distilling and selective fusing the degradation features, the proposed model shows its superiority in IRP prediction. Thanks to the proposed model, we are then able to validate how various image restoration related applications are benefited from IRP prediction. We show the potential usages of IRP as a filtering principle to select valuable frames, an auxiliary guidance to improve restoration models, and even an indicator to optimize camera settings for capturing better images under dynamic scenarios.

NTIRE 2022 Challenge on High Dynamic Range Imaging: Methods and Results

This paper reviews the challenge on constrained high dynamic range (HDR) imaging that was part of the New Trends in Image Restoration and Enhancement (NTIRE) workshop, held in conjunction with CVPR 2022. This manuscript focuses on the competition set-up, datasets, the proposed methods and their results. The challenge aims at estimating an HDR image from multiple respective low dynamic range (LDR) observations, which might suffer from under- or over-exposed regions and different sources of noise. The challenge is composed of two tracks with an emphasis on fidelity and complexity constraints: In Track 1, participants are asked to optimize objective fidelity scores while imposing a low-complexity constraint (i.e. solutions can not exceed a given number of operations). In Track 2, participants are asked to minimize the complexity of their solutions while imposing a constraint on fidelity scores (i.e. solutions are required to obtain a higher fidelity score than the prescribed baseline). Both tracks use the same data and metrics: Fidelity is measured by means of PSNR with respect to a ground-truth HDR image (computed both directly and with a canonical tonemapping operation), while complexity metrics include the number of Multiply-Accumulate (MAC) operations and runtime (in seconds).

3D Gated Recurrent Fusion for Semantic Scene Completion

This paper tackles the problem of data fusion in the semantic scene completion (SSC) task, which can simultaneously deal with semantic labeling and scene completion. RGB images contain texture details of the object(s) which are vital for semantic scene understanding. Meanwhile, depth images capture geometric clues of high relevance for shape completion. Using both RGB and depth images can further boost the accuracy of SSC over employing one modality in isolation. We propose a 3D gated recurrent fusion network (GRFNet), which learns to adaptively select and fuse the relevant information from depth and RGB by making use of the gate and memory modules. Based on the single-stage fusion, we further propose a multi-stage fusion strategy, which could model the correlations among different stages within the network. Extensive experiments on two benchmark datasets demonstrate the superior performance and the effectiveness of the proposed GRFNet for data fusion in SSC. Code will be made available.

Attention-based network for low-light image enhancement

The captured images under low light conditions often suffer insufficient brightness and notorious noise. Hence, low-light image enhancement is a key challenging task in computer vision. A variety of methods have been proposed for this task, but these methods often failed in an extreme low-light environment and amplified the underlying noise in the input image. To address such a difficult problem, this paper presents a novel attention-based neural network to generate high-quality enhanced low-light images from the raw sensor data. Specifically, we first employ attention strategy (i.e. channel attention and spatial attention modules) to suppress undesired chromatic aberration and noise. The channel attention module guides the network to refine redundant colour features. The spatial attention module focuses on denoising by taking advantage of the non-local correlation in the image. Furthermore, we propose a new pooling layer, called inverted shuffle layer, which adaptively selects useful information from previous features. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority of the proposed network in terms of suppressing the chromatic aberration and noise artifacts in enhancement, especially when the low-light image has severe noise.

COVID-19 Chest CT Image Segmentation -- A Deep Convolutional Neural Network Solution

A novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was detected and has spread rapidly across various countries around the world since the end of the year 2019, Computed Tomography (CT) images have been used as a crucial alternative to the time-consuming RT-PCR test. However, pure manual segmentation of CT images faces a serious challenge with the increase of suspected cases, resulting in urgent requirements for accurate and automatic segmentation of COVID-19 infections. Unfortunately, since the imaging characteristics of the COVID-19 infection are diverse and similar to the backgrounds, existing medical image segmentation methods cannot achieve satisfactory performance. In this work, we try to establish a new deep convolutional neural network tailored for segmenting the chest CT images with COVID-19 infections. We firstly maintain a large and new chest CT image dataset consisting of 165,667 annotated chest CT images from 861 patients with confirmed COVID-19. Inspired by the observation that the boundary of the infected lung can be enhanced by adjusting the global intensity, in the proposed deep CNN, we introduce a feature variation block which adaptively adjusts the global properties of the features for segmenting COVID-19 infection. The proposed FV block can enhance the capability of feature representation effectively and adaptively for diverse cases. We fuse features at different scales by proposing Progressive Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling to handle the sophisticated infection areas with diverse appearance and shapes. We conducted experiments on the data collected in China and Germany and show that the proposed deep CNN can produce impressive performance effectively.
