Construction of storage codes of rates approaching one on triangle-free graphs

Consider an assignment of bits to the vertices of a connected graph $Γ(V, E)$ with the property that the value of each vertex is a function of the values of its neighbors. A collection of such assignments is called a storage code of length $|V|$ on $Γ$. In this paper we construct an infinite family of binary linear storage codes on triangle-free graphs with rates arbitrarily close to one.

Constructions of tight sets of the Hermitian polar space $\mc{H}(2r-1,q^2)$

In this paper, we construct two infinite families of tight sets with parameters $(q^{2r-2}-1)$ and $(q^{2r-1}-q^{2r-2})$, respectively, in the Hermitian polar space $\mathcal{H}(2r-1,q^2)$ for any $r\ge 2$ and any prime power $q$. Both families admit $(q-1).\PGL(r,q^2).2.2e$ as the full automorphism group, where $q=p^e$, $p$ is a prime, and $e$ a positive integer.

Linear representations of finite geometries and associated LDPC codes

The {\it linear representation} of a subset of a finite projective space is an incidence system of affine points and lines determined by the subset. In this paper we use character theory to show that the rank of the incidence matrix has a direct geometric interpretation in terms of certain hyperplanes. We consider the LDPC codes defined by taking the incidence matrix and its transpose as parity-check matrices, and in the former case prove a conjecture of Vandendriessche that the code is generated by words of minimum weight called plane words. In the latter case we compute the minimum weight in several cases and provide explicit constructions of minimum weight codewords.

New Bounds for Partial Spreads of $H(2d-1, q^2)$ and Partial Ovoids of the Ree-Tits Octagon

Two results are obtained that give upper bounds on partial spreads and partial ovoids respectively. The first result is that the size of a partial spread of the Hermitian polar space $\mathsf{H}(3, q^2)$ is at most $\left(\frac{2p^3+p}{3} \right)^t+1$, where $q=p^t$, $p$ is a prime. For fixed $p$ this bound is in $o(q^3)$, which is asymptotically better than the previous best known bound of $(q^3+q+2)/2$. Similar bounds for partial spreads of $\mathsf{H}(2d-1, q^2)$, $d$ even, are given. The second result is that the size of a partial ovoid of the Ree-Tits octagon $\mathsf{O}(2^t)$ is at most $26^t+1$. This bound, in particular, shows that the Ree-Tits octagon $\mathsf{O}(2^t)$ does not have an ovoid.

Characterization of intersecting families of maximum size in $PSL(2,q)$

We consider the action of the $2$-dimensional projective special linear group $PSL(2,q)$ on the projective line $PG(1,q)$ over the finite field $\F_q$, where $q$ is an odd prime power. A subset $S$ of $PSL(2,q)$ is said to be an intersecting family if for any $g_1,g_2 \in S$, there exists an element $x\in PG(1,q)$ such that $x^{g_1}= x^{g_2}$. It is known that the maximum size of an intersecting family in $PSL(2,q)$ is $q(q-1)/2$. We prove that all intersecting families of maximum size are cosets of point stabilizers for all odd prime powers $q>3$.

A family of $m$-ovoids of parabolic quadrics

We construct a family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$, the parabolic quadric of $\textup{PG}(4,q)$, for $q\equiv 3\pmod 4$. The existence of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$ was only known for $q=3, 7,$ or $11$. Our construction provides the first infinite family of $\frac{(q-1)}{2}$-ovoids of $Q(4,q)$.Along the way, we also give a construction of $\frac{q+1}{2}$-ovoids in $Q(4,q)$ for $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$.

Cameron-Liebler line classes with parameter $x=\frac{q^2-1}{2}$

In this paper, we give an algebraic construction of a new infinite family of Cameron-Liebler line classes with parameter $x=\frac{q^2-1}{2}$ for $q\equiv 5$ or $9\pmod{12}$, which generalizes the examples found by Rodgers in \cite{rodgers} through a computer search. Furthermore, in the case where $q$ is an even power of $3$, we construct the first infinite family of affine two-intersection sets in $\mathrm{AG}(2,q)$.

Three-valued Gauss periods, circulant weighing matrices and association schemes

Gauss periods taking exactly two values are closely related to two-weight irreducible cyclic codes and strongly regular Cayley graphs. They have been extensively studied in the work of Schmidt and White and others. In this paper, we consider the question of when Gauss periods take exactly three rational values. We obtain numerical necessary conditions for Gauss periods to take exactly three rational values. We show that in certain cases, the necessary conditions obtained are also sufficient. We give numerous examples where the Gauss periods take exactly three vlaues. Furthermore, we discuss connections between three-valued Gauss periods and combinatorial structures such as circulant weighing matrices and 3-class association schemes.

Constructions of Strongly Regular Cayley Graphs and Skew Hadamard Difference Sets from Cyclotomic Classes

In this paper, we give a construction of strongly regular Cayley graphs and a construction of skew Hadamard difference sets. Both constructions are based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields, and they generalize the constructions given by Feng and Xiang \cite{FX111,FX113}. Three infinite families of strongly regular graphs with new parameters are obtained. The main tools that we employed are index 2 Gauss sums, instead of cyclotomic numbers.

Lifting Constructions of Strongly Regular Cayley Graphs

We give two "lifting" constructions of strongly regular Cayley graphs. In the first construction we "lift" a cyclotomic strongly regular graph by using a subdifference set of the Singer difference set. The second construction uses quadratic forms over finite fields and it is a common generalization of the construction of the affine polar graphs \cite{CK86} and a construction of strongly regular Cayley graphs given in \cite{FWXY}. The two constructions are related in the following way: The second construction can be viewed as a recursive construction, and the strongly regular Cayley graphs obtained from the first construction can serve as starters for the second construction. We also obtain association schemes from the second construction.

Exterior algebras and two conjectures on finite abelian groups

Let G be a finite abelian group with |G|>1. Let a_1,...,a_k be k distinct elements of G and let b_1,...,b_k be (not necessarily distinct) elements of G, where k is a positive integer smaller than the least prime divisor of |G|. We show that there is a permutation $π$ on {1,...,k} such that a_1b_{π(1)},...,a_kb_{π(k)} are distinct, provided that any other prime divisor of |G| (if there is any) is greater than k!. This in particular confirms the Dasgupta-Karolyi-Serra-Szegedy conjecture for abelian p-groups. We also pose a new conjecture involving determinants and characters, and show that its validity implies Snevily's conjecture for abelian groups of odd order. Our methods involve exterior algebras and characters.

Partial difference sets from quadratic forms and $p$-ary weakly regular bent functions

We generalize the construction of affine polar graphs in two different ways to obtain new partial difference sets and amorphic association schemes. The first generalization uses a combination of quadratic forms and uniform cyclotomy. In the second generalization we replace the quadratic form in the affine polar graph construction by higher degree homogeneous functions that are $p$-ary weakly regular bent. The negative Latin square type partial difference sets arising from the first generalization are new.

Permutation Polynomials of Degree 6 or 7 over Finite Fields of Characteristic 2

In \cite{D1}, Dickson listed all permutation polynomials up to degree 5 over an arbitrary finite field, and all permutation polynomials of degree 6 over finite fields of odd characteristic. The classification of degree 6 permutation polynomials over finite fields of characteristic 2 was left incomplete. In this paper we complete the classification of permutation polynomials of degree 6 over finite fields of characteristic 2. In addition, all permutation polynomials of degree 7 over finite fields of characteristic 2 are classified.

The permutation action of finite symplectic groups of odd characteristic on their standard modules

Motivated by the incidence problems between points and flats of a symplectic polar space, we study a large class of submodules of the space of functions on the standard module of a finite symplectic group of odd characteristic. Our structure results on this class of submodules allow us to determine the $p$-ranks of the incidence matrices between points and flats of the symplectic polar space. In particular, we give an explicit formula for the $p$-rank of the generalized quadrangle ${\rm W}(3,q)$, where $q$ is an odd prime power. Combined with the earlier results of Sastry and Sin on the 2-rank of ${\rm W}(3,2^t)$, it completes the determination of the $p$-ranks of ${\rm W}(3,q)$.
