Large phase shift of (1+1)-dimensional nonlocal spatial solitons in lead glass

The large phase shift of strongly nonlocal spatial optical soliton(SNSOS) in the (1+1)-dimensional [(1+1)D] lead glass is investigated using the perturbation method. The fundamental soliton solution of the nonlocal nonlinear Schodinger equation(NNLSE) under the second approximation in strongly nonlocal case is obtained. It is found that the phase shift rate along the propagation direction of such soliton is proportional to the degree of nonlocality, which indicates that one can realize Pi-phase-shift within one Rayleigh distance in (1+1)D lead glass. A full comprehension of the nonlocality-enhancement to the phase shift rate of SNSOS is reached via quantitative comparisons of phase shift rates in different nonlocal systems.

Spiraling elliptic breathers in saturable nonlinear media with linear anisotropy

We have introduced a class of spiraling elliptic breathers in saturable nonlinear media with linear anisotropy. Two kinds of evolution behaviors of the breathers, rotating and pendulum-like librating, are both predicted by the variational approach, and confirmed by the numerical simulation. The spiraling elliptic breathers can rotate even though they have no initial orbital angular momentum (OAM). Due to the linear anisotropy of the media, the OAM is no longer conserved. Therefore, the angular velocity is found to be not a constant but a periodic function of the propagation distance. When the linear anisotropy is large enough, the spiraling elliptic breathers can librate like the pendulum. The spiraling elliptic breathers exist in the media with not only the saturable nonlinearity but also the nonlocal nonlinearity, as a matter of fact, they are universal in the nonlinear media with the linear anisotropy.

Large phase shift of spatial soliton in lead glass by cross-phase modulation in pump-signal geometry

We investigate the large phase shifts of the bi-color spatial soliton pair in a cylindrical lead glass rod. The theoretical study suggests a synchronous propagation of a strong pump beam and a weak signal beam under the required initial condition. We experimentally obtain a $π$ phase shift of the signal beam by changing the power of the pump beam by about 14 mW around the soliton critical power, which agrees qualitatively with our theoretical result. The ratio of the phase shift rate of the signal soliton to that of the pump soliton shows a close match to the theoretical estimation.

Large phase shift of spatial solitons in lead glass

The phenomenon of the large phase shift of the strongly nonlocal spatial optical soliton was predicted by Guo et al. within the phenomenological framework [Q. Guo, et al., Phys. Rev. E 69, 016602 (2004)], but has not been experimentally confirmed so far. We theoretically and experimentally investigate the large phase shift of that propagating in the lead glass. It is verified that the change of the optical power carried by the optical beam about 10 mW around the critical power for the soliton can lead to a π phase shift, which would be of its potential in the application of all-optical switchings.

Spiraling elliptic solitons in nonlocal nonlinear media without anisotropy

The optical spatial solitons with ellipse-shaped spots have generally been considered to be a result of either linear or nonlinear anisotropy. In this paper, we introduce a class of spiraling elliptic solitons in the nonlocal nonlinear media without both linear and nonlinear anisotropy. The spiraling elliptic solitons carry the orbital angular momentum, which plays a key role in the formation of such solitons, and are stable for any degree of nonlocality except the local case when the response function of the material is Gaussian function. The formation of such solitons can be attributable to the effective anisotropic diffraction (linear anisotropy) resulting from the orbital angular momentum. Our variational analytical result is confirmed by direct numerical simulation of the nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation.

The boundary force exerted on spatial solitons in cylindrical strongly nonlocal media

We investigate the propagation of the spatial soliton in cylindrical strongly nonlocal media by a novel method of image beam of light. The effect of the boundary on the soliton acting as the dynamic force for the soliton steering is equivalent to the force between the soliton beam and the image beam. The trajectory of the soliton is analytically studied which is in good agreement with the experimental results.
