Ultrahigh-Energy Gamma-ray Emission Associated with Black Hole-Jet Systems

Black holes (BH), one of the most intriguing objects in the universe, can manifest themselves through electromagnetic radiation initiated by the accretion flow. Some stellar-mass BHs drive relativistic jets when accreting matter from their companion stars, forming microquasars. Non-thermal emission from the radio to tera-electronvolt (TeV) gamma-ray band has been observed from microquasars, indicating the acceleration of relativistic particles. Here we report detection of four microquasars (SS 433, V4641 Sgr, GRS 1915+105, MAXI J1820+070) of spectrum extending to the ultrahigh-energy (UHE; photon energy $E>100$ TeV) band and one microquasar (Cygnus X-1) of spectrum approaching 100 TeV, using the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). Notably, the total emission associated with SS 433 cannot be interpreted with a single leptonic component. In the UHE band, its emission is in spatial coincidence with a giant atomic cloud, which is consistent with a hadronic origin. An elongated source is discovered from V4641 Sgr with the spectrum continuing up to 800 TeV. The detection of UHE gamma rays demonstrates that accreting BHs and their environments can operate as extremely efficient accelerators of particles out of 1 peta-electronvolt (PeV), suggesting microquasars to be important contributors to Galactic cosmic rays especially around the `knee' region.

Molecular states from $\bar{B}^{(*)}N$ interactions

In 2019, two new structures $Λ_b(6146)$ and $Λ_b(6152)$ were observed by the LHCb Collaboration at the invariant mass spectrum of $Λ_b^0π^{+}π^{-}$, which aroused a hot discussion about their inner structures. The $Λ_b(6146)$ and $Λ_b(6152)$ might still be molecular states because their masses are close to threshold of a $\bar{B}$ meson and a nucleon. In this work, we perform a systematical investigation of possible heavy baryonic molecular states from the $\bar{B}N$ interaction. Since the $\bar{B}N$ channel strongly couples to the $\bar{B}^{*}N$ channel, the possible $\bar{B}N-\bar{B}^{*}N$ bound states are also studied. The interaction of the system considered is described by the $t$-channel $σ$, $π$, $η$ ,$ω$, and $ρ$ mesons exchanges. By solving the non-relativistic Schrödinger equation with the obtained one-boson-exchange potentials, the $\bar{B}^{(*)}N$ bound states with different quantum numbers are searched. The calculation suggests that recently observed $Λ_b(6146)$ can be assigned as a $P$-wave $\bar{B}N$ molecular state with spin parity $J^P=3/2^{+}$ or a $\bar{B}N-\bar{B}^{*}N$ bound state. However, assignment of $Λ_b(6152)$ as an $F$-wave $\bar{B}N$ molecular is disfavored. The $Λ_b(6152)$ can be explained as meson-baryon molecular state with a small $\bar{B}N$ component. The calculation also predict the existence of two $S$-wave $\bar{B}N-\bar{B}^{*}N$ bound states that can be related to the experimentally observed $Λ_b(5912)$ and $Λ_b(5920)$.

Intrinsic Spin Hall Effect with Spin-Tensor-Momentum Coupling

We derive the spin continuity equation by using the Noether's theorem. A new type of spin-tensor Hall current is found in the continuity equation. The spin-tensor Hall current is originating from the coupling of the spin-tensor and the momentum. The intrinsic spin Hall effect in the two-dimensional fermion model with the spin-orbit coupling and spin-tensor-momentum coupling is studied. The total spin Hall conductivity with the presence of the spin-tensor Hall current is calculated. The numerical results indicate that the total spin Hall conductivity is enhanced by the contribution of the spin-tensor-momentum coupling. The spin-tensor-momentum coupling may increase the spin transport in the intrinsic spin Hall effect.

Origin of Strong Linear Polarization from Fast Radio Bursts

The detection of almost 100% linearly polarized emission from the fast radio burst source FRB 121102 implies coherent emission of relativistic electrons moving in perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. The origin of such a particle distribution is very intriguing. Given that FRB 121102 is likely driven by a neutron star, we explored orbits of charged particles trapped in a dipole magnetic field (the Störmer problem). Most previous studies focused on particles with relatively low energies so that the guiding center approximation may be applied. High energy particles usually have chaotic orbits except those on a periodic orbit or near stable periodic orbits. Via evaluation of the maximum Lyapunov exponent of orbits of particles launched from the equatorial plane with an axial velocity (the angular velocity sets the length and energy scales of the system), we found prominent regions of quasi-periodic orbits around stable periodic orbits in the equatorial plane at high-energies. Particles in these orbits oscillate around the equatorial plane and their radial distance from the dipole can vary by a factor of/,2. Relativistic electrons in such orbits may be responsible for the almost 100% polarized emission from FRB 121102.

Frustration-Induced Gaplessness in the Frustrated Transverse Ising Ring

New effects in the frustrated transverse Ising ring are predicted. The system is solved based on a mapping of Pauli spin operators to the Jordan-Wigner fermions. We group the low-lying energy levels into bands after imposing appropriate parity constraint, which projects out the redundant degrees of freedom brought about by the Jordan-Wigner fermions. In the region of strong antiferromagnetic coupling, we uncover an unusual gapless phase induced by the ring frustration. We demonstrate that its ground state exhibits a strong longitudinal spin-spin correlation and possesses a considerably large entropy of entanglement. The low-lying energy levels evolve adiabatically in the gapless phase, which facilitates us to work out new behaviors of density of states, low-temperature correlation functions and specific heat. We also propose an experimental protocol for observing this peculiar gapless phase.

Dimer XXZ Spin Ladders: Phase diagram and a Non-Trivial Antiferromagnetic Phase

We study the dimer $XXZ$ spin model on two-leg ladders with isotropic Heisenberg interactions on the rung and anisotropic $XXZ$ interactions along the rail in an external field. Combining both analytical and numerical methods, we set up the ground state phase diagram and investigate the quantum phase transitions and the properties of rich phases, including the full polarized, singlet dimer, Luttinger liquid, triplon solid, and a non-trivial antiferromagnetic phases with gap. The analytical analyses based on solvable effective Hamiltonians are presented for clear view of the phases and transitions. Quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization methods are employed on finite system to verify the exact nature of the phases and transitions. Of all the phases, we pay a special attention to the gapped antiferromagnetic phase, which is disclosed to be a non-trivial one that exhibits the time-reversal symmetry. We also discuss how our findings could be detected in experiment in the light of ultracold atoms technology advances.

Higgs-like Excitations of Cold Atom System with Spin-orbit Coupling

The Higgs-like excitations, which distinguish from the Higgs amplitude mode in many-body system, are single-particle excitations in system with non-Abelian gauge potential. We investigate the Higgs-like excitations of cold atom system in artificial non-Abelian gauge potential. We demonstrate that when a non-Abelian gauge potential is reduced to Abelian potential, its Abelian part constructs spin-orbit coupling, and its non-Abelian part emerges Higgs-like excitations. The Higgs-like excitations induce a mass of the non-Abelian gauge field, which offsets the defect of massless of the gauge theories. We show that the mass of gauge field can affect the spin Hall currents which are produced by the spin-orbit coupling. We also discuss the observation of these phenomena in real experiment.

Quantum phase transition of cold atoms in the bilayer hexagonal optical lattices

We propose a scheme to investigate the quantum phase transition of cold atoms in the bilayer hexagonal optical lattices. Using the quantum Monte Carlo method, we calculate the ground state phase diagrams which contain an antiferromagnet, a solid, a superfluid, a fully polarized state and a supersolid. We find there is a supersolid emerging in a proper parameter space, where the diagonal long range order coexists with off-diagonal long range order. We show that the bilayer optical lattices can be realized by coupling two monolayer optical lattices and give an experimental protocol to observe those novel phenomena in the real experiments.
