Evolution of chirality from transverse wobbling in $^{135}$Pr

Chirality is a distinct signature that characterizes triaxial shapes in nuclei. We report the first observation of chirality in the nucleus $^{135}$Pr using a high-statistics Gammasphere experiment with the $^{123}$Sb($^{16}$O,4n)$^{135}$Pr reaction. Two chiral-partner bands with the configuration $π(1h_{11/2})^1\otimesν(1h_{11/2})^{-2}$ have been identified in this nucleus. Angular distribution analyses of the $ΔI = 1$ transitions connecting the two bands reveal a dominant dipole character, and quasiparticle triaxial rotor model calculations show good agreement with the data. Since the simultaneous observation of chirality and transverse wobbling in $^{135}$Pr relies critically on these angular distribution results, we also address and refute the experimental and theoretical criticisms raised in a recent work by Lv et al., presenting additional evidence that further strengthens our interpretation. This marks the first observation of both hallmarks of triaxiality-chirality and wobbling-in the same nucleus.

Effects of $\bm\la$ hyperons on the deformations of even-even nuclei

The deformations of multi-$\la$ hypernuclei corresponding to even-even core nuclei ranging from $^8$Be to $^{40}$Ca with 2, 4, 6, and 8 hyperons are studied in the framework of the deformed Skyrme-Hartree-Fock approach. It is found that the deformations are reduced when adding 2 or 8 $\la$ hyperons, but enhanced when adding 4 or 6 $\la$ hyperons. These differences are attributed to the fact that $\la$ hyperons are filled gradually into the three deformed $p$ orbits, of which the [110]1/2$^-$ orbit is prolately deformed and the degenerate [101]1/2$^-$ and [101]3/2$^-$ orbits are oblately deformed.

Pseudo spin doublet bands and Gallagher Moszkowski doublet bands in $^{100}$Y

New transitions in neutron rich $^{100}$Y have been identified in a $^9$Be+$^{238}$U experiment with mass- and Z- gates to provide full fragment identification. These transitions and high spin levels of $^{100}$Y have been investigated by analyzing the high statistics $γ$-$γ$-$γ$ and $γ$-$γ$-$γ$-$γ$ coincidence data from the spontaneous fission of $^{252}$Cf at the Gammasphere detector array. Two new bands, 14 new levels and 23 new transitions have been identified. The $K^π=4^+$ new band decaying to an 1s isomeric state is assigned to be the high-$K$ Gallagher-Moszkowski (GM) partner of the known $K^π=1^+$ band, with the $π5/2[522] \otimes ν3/2[411]$ configuration. This 4$^+$ band is also proposed to be the pseudo spin partner of the new $K^π=5^+$ band with a 5$^{+}$ $π5/2[422] \otimes ν5/2[413]$ configuration, to form a $π5/2[422] \otimes ν[312$ $5/2,3/2]$ neutron pseudospin doublet. Constrained triaxial covariant density functional theory and quantal particle rotor model calculations have been applied to interpret the band structure and available electromagnetic transition probabilities and are found in good agreement with experimental values.

$g$-factor and static quadrupole moment for the wobbling mode in $^{133}$La

The $g$-factor and static quadrupole moment for the wobbling mode in the nuclide $^{133}$La are investigated as functions of the spin $I$by employing the particle rotor model. The model can reproduce the available experimental data of $g$-factor and static quadrupole moment. The properties of the $g$-factor and static quadrupole moment as functions of $I$ are interpreted by analyzing the angular momentum geometry of the collective rotor, proton-particle, and total nuclear system. It is demonstrated that the experimental value of the $g$-factor at the bandhead of the yrast band leads to the conclusion that the rotor angular momentum is $R\simeq 2$. Furthermore, the variation of the $g$-factor with the spin $I$ yields the information that the angular momenta of the proton-particle and total nuclear system are oriented parallel to each other. The negative values of the static quadrupole moment over the entire spin region are caused by an alignment of the total angular momentum mainly along the short axis. Static quadrupole moment differences between the wobbling and yrast band originate from a wobbling excitation with respect to the short axis.

Coexistence of planar and aplanar rotations in $^{195}$Tl

The chirality suggested for the doublet bands B2 and B2a in $^{195}$Tl in $A\sim190$ region is reexamined. The potential-energy curves and the configurations together with the deformation parameters are obtained by the constrained covariant density functional theory. The corresponding experimental energy spectra, energy differences between doublet bands, and the available $B(M1)/B(E2)$ values are investigated by the fully quantal particle rotor model. Analysis on the basis of the angular momentum components, the $K$-plots, and the azimuthal plots suggest a planar rotation interpretation for the bands B2 and B2a. Hence, it coexists with the aplanar rotation in the other doublet bands B4 and B4a in $^{195}$Tl.

Effective field theory for triaxially deformed odd-mass nuclei

The effective field theory for collective rotations of triaxially deformed nuclei is generalized to odd-mass nuclei by including the angular momentum of the valence nucleon as an additional degree of freedom. The Hamiltonian is constructed up to next-to-leading order within the effective field theory formalism. The applicability of this Hamiltonian is examined by describing the wobbling bands observed in the lutetium isotopes $^{161,163,165,167}$Lu. It is found that by taking into account the next-to-leading order corrections, quartic in the rotor angular momentum, the wobbling energies $E_{\textrm{wob}}$ and spin-rotational frequency relations $ω(I)$ are better described than with the leading order Hamiltonian.

Longitudinal Wobbling Motion in $^{187}$Au

The rare phenomenon of nuclear wobbling motion has been investigated for the nucleus $^{187}$Au. A longitudinal wobbling-bands pair has been identified and clearly distinguished from the associated signature-partner band on the basis of angular distribution measurements. Theoretical calculations in the framework of the Particle Rotor Model (PRM) are found to agree well with the experimental observations. This is the first experimental evidence for longitudinal wobbling bands where the expected signature partner band has also been identified, and establishes this exotic collective mode as a general phenomenon over the nuclear chart.

Multiple chiral bands in $^{137}$Nd

Two new bands have been identified in $^{137}$Nd from a high-statistics JUROGAM II gamma-ray spectroscopy experiment. Constrained density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations are used to assign configurations and investigate the band properties, which are well described and understood. It is demonstrated that these two new bands can be interpreted as chiral partners of previously known three-quasiparticle positive- and negative-parity bands. The newly observed chiral doublet bands in $^{137}$Nd represent an important support to the existence of multiple chiral bands in nuclei. The present results constitute the missing stone in the series of Nd nuclei showing multiple chiral bands, which becomes the most extended sequence of nuclei presenting multiple chiral bands in the Segré chart.

Prolate-to-oblate transition and backbending along the yrast line induced by quasiparticle alignment

The yrast lines in Kr isotopes with $N=42$, 44, and 46 are investigated in a beyond mean field framework with both prolate-oblate coexistence and quasiparticle alignment taken into account. Quasiparticle orbitals with high-$j$ and low-$Ω$ on the oblate side are shown to be responsible for the sharp backbending observed in $^{82}$Kr, by driving the yrast shape from prolate to oblate. This suggests that quasiparticle alignment may not be neglected in the investigation of the shape evolution along the yrast line.

Static quadrupole moments of nuclear chiral doublet bands

The static quadrupole moments (SQMs) of nuclear chiral doublet bands are investigated for the first time taking the particle-hole configuration $π(1h_{11/2}) \otimes ν(1h_{11/2})^{-1}$ with triaxial deformation parameters in the range $260^\circ \leq γ\leq 270^\circ$ as examples. The behavior of the SQM as a function of spin $I$ is illustrated by analyzing the components of the total angular momentum. It is found that in the region of chiral vibrations the SQMs of doublet bands are strongly varying with $I$, whereas in the region of static chirality the SQMs of doublet bands are almost constant. Hence, the measurement of SQMs provides a new criterion for distinguishing the modes of nuclear chirality. Moreover, in the high-spin region the SQMs can be approximated by an analytic formula with a proportionality to $\cosγ$ for both doublet bands. This provides a way to extract experimentally the triaxial deformation parameter $γ$ for chiral bands from the measured SQMs.

Tidal wave in $^{102}$Pd: An extended five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian description

The five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on the covariant density functional theory is applied to investigate the observed tidal wave mode in the yrast band of $^{102}$Pd. The energy spectra, the relations between the spin and the rotational frequency, and the ratios of $B(E2)/\mathcal{J}(I)$ in the yrast band are well reproduced by introducing the empirical $ab$ formula for the moments of inertia. This $ab$ formula is related to the fourth order effect of collective momentum in the collective Hamiltonian. It is also shown that the shape evolution in the tidal wave is determined microscopically by the competition between the rotational kinetic energy and the collective potential in the framework of the collective Hamiltonian.

Wobbling motion in $^{135}$Pr within a collective Hamiltonian

The recently reported wobbling bands in $^{135}$Pr are investigated by the collective Hamiltonian, in which the collective parameters, including the collective potential and the mass parameter, are respectively determined from the tilted axis cranking (TAC) model and the harmonic frozen alignment (HFA) formula. It is shown that the experimental energy spectra of both yrast and wobbling bands are well reproduced by the collective Hamiltonian. It is confirmed that the wobbling mode in $^{135}$Pr changes from transverse to longitudinal with the rotational frequency. The mechanism of this transition is revealed by analyzing the effective moments of inertia of the three principal axes, and the corresponding variation trend of the wobbling frequency is determined by the softness and shapes of the collective potential.

Collective Hamiltonian for wobbling modes

The simple, longitudinal, and transverse wobblers are systematically studied within the framework of collective Hamiltonian, where the collective potential and mass parameter included are obtained based on the tilted axis cranking approach. Solving the collective Hamiltonian by diagonalization, the energies and the wave functions of the wobbling states are obtained. The obtained results are compared with those by harmonic approximation formula and particle rotor model. The wobbling energies calculated by the collective Hamiltonian are closer to the exact solutions by particle rotor model than harmonic approximation formula. It is confirmed that the wobbling frequency increases with the rotational frequency in simple and longitudinal wobbling motions while decreases in transverse wobbling motion. These variation trends are related to the stiffness of the collective potential in the collective Hamiltonian.

Multiple chiral doublet bands of identical configuration in 103Rh

Three sets of chiral doublet band structures have been identified in the 103Rh nucleus. The properties of the observed chiral doublet bands are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. Two of them belong to an identical configuration, and provide the first experimental evidence for a novel type of multiple chiral doublets, where an "excited" chiral doublet of a configuration is seen together with the "yrast" one. This observation shows that the chiral geometry in nuclei can be robust against the increase of the intrinsic excitation energy.

Wobbling geometry in simple triaxial rotor

The spectroscopy properties and angular momentum geometry for the wobbling motion of a simple triaxial rotor are investigated within the triaxial rotor model up to spin $I=40\hbar$. The obtained exact solutions of energy spectra and reduced quadrupole transition probabilities are compared to the approximate analytic solutions by harmonic approximation formula and Holstein-Primakoff formula. It is found that the low lying wobbling bands can be well described by the analytic formulas. The evolution of the angular momentum geometry as well as the $K$-distribution with respect to the rotation and the wobbling phonon excitation are studied in detail. It is demonstrated that with the increasing of wobbling phonon number, the triaxial rotor changes its wobbling motions along the axis with the largest moment of inertia to the axis with the smallest moment of inertia. In this process, a specific evolutionary track that can be used to depict the motion of a triaxial rotating nuclei is proposed.

Collective Hamiltonian for chiral modes

A collective model is proposed to describe the chiral rotation and vibration and applied to a system with one $h_{11/2}$ proton particle and one $h_{11/2}$ neutron hole coupled to a triaxial rigid rotor. The collective Hamiltonian is constructed from the potential energy and mass parameter obtained in the tilted axis cranking approach. By diagonalizing the collective Hamiltonian with a box boundary condition, it is found that for the chiral rotation, the partner states become more degenerate with the increase of the cranking frequency, and for the chiral vibrations, their important roles for the collective excitation are revealed at the beginning of the chiral rotation region.

Evidence for Multiple Chiral Doublet Bands in $^{133}$Ce

Two distinct sets of chiral-partner bands have been identified in the nucleus $^{133}$Ce. They constitute a multiple chiral doublet (M$χ$D), a phenomenon predicted by relativistic mean field (RMF) calculations and observed experimentally here for the first time. The properties of these chiral bands are in good agreement with results of calculations based on a combination of the constrained triaxial RMF theory and the particle-rotor model.

Chiral geometry of higher excited bands in triaxial nuclei with particle-hole configuration

The lowest six rotational bands have been studied in the particle-rotor model with the particle-hole configuration $πh^1_{11/2}\otimesνh^{-1}_{11/2}$ and different triaxiality parameter $γ$. Both constant and spin-dependent variable moments of inertial (CMI and VMI) are introduced. The energy spectra, electromagnetic transition probabilities, angular momentum components and $K$-distribution have been examined. It is shown that, besides the band 1 and band 2, the predicted band 3 and band 4 in the calculations of both CMI and VMI for atomic nuclei with $γ=30^\circ$ could be interpreted as chiral doublet bands.
