Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of $^{235}$U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the $^{235}$U spectral shape to about 3\%. The ${}^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Optimized Dirac Woods-Saxon basis for covariant density functional theory

The Woods-Saxon basis has achieved great success in both nonrelativistic and covariant density functional theories in recent years. Due to its nonanalytical nature, however, applications of the Woods-Saxon basis are numerically complicated and computationally time consuming. In this paper, based on the deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum (DRHBc), we check in detail the convergence with respect to the basis space in the Dirac sea. An optimized Dirac Woods-Saxon basis is proposed, whose corresponding potential is close to the nuclear mean field. It is shown that the basis space of the optimized Dirac Woods-Saxon basis required for convergence is substantially reduced compared with the original one. In particular, it does not need to contain the bases from continuum in the Dirac sea. The application of the optimized Woods-Saxon basis would greatly reduce computing resource for large-scale density functional calculations.

Pseudo spin doublet bands and Gallagher Moszkowski doublet bands in $^{100}$Y

New transitions in neutron rich $^{100}$Y have been identified in a $^9$Be+$^{238}$U experiment with mass- and Z- gates to provide full fragment identification. These transitions and high spin levels of $^{100}$Y have been investigated by analyzing the high statistics $γ$-$γ$-$γ$ and $γ$-$γ$-$γ$-$γ$ coincidence data from the spontaneous fission of $^{252}$Cf at the Gammasphere detector array. Two new bands, 14 new levels and 23 new transitions have been identified. The $K^π=4^+$ new band decaying to an 1s isomeric state is assigned to be the high-$K$ Gallagher-Moszkowski (GM) partner of the known $K^π=1^+$ band, with the $π5/2[522] \otimes ν3/2[411]$ configuration. This 4$^+$ band is also proposed to be the pseudo spin partner of the new $K^π=5^+$ band with a 5$^{+}$ $π5/2[422] \otimes ν5/2[413]$ configuration, to form a $π5/2[422] \otimes ν[312$ $5/2,3/2]$ neutron pseudospin doublet. Constrained triaxial covariant density functional theory and quantal particle rotor model calculations have been applied to interpret the band structure and available electromagnetic transition probabilities and are found in good agreement with experimental values.

Observation of a cross-section enhancement near mass threshold in $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$

The process $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrowΛ\barΛ$ is studied using data samples at $\sqrt{s}=2.2324$, 2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. The Born cross section is measured at $\sqrt{s}$=2.2324 GeV, which is 1.0 MeV above the $Λ\barΛ$ mass threshold, to be $305\pm45^{+66}_{-36}$ pb, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The substantial cross section near threshold is significantly larger than that expected from theory, which predicts the cross section to vanish at threshold. The Born cross sections at $\sqrt{s}$=2.400, 2.800 and 3.080 GeV are measured and found to be consistent with previous experimental results, but with improved precision. Finally, the corresponding effective electromagnetic form factors of $Λ$ are deduced.

Toroidal states in $^{28}$Si with covariant density functional theory in 3D lattice space

The toroidal states in $^{28}$Si with spin extending to extremely high are investigated with the cranking covariant density functional theory on a 3D lattice. Thirteen toroidal states with spin $I$ ranging from 0 to 56$\hbar$ are obtained, and their stabilities against particle emissions are studied by analyzing the density distributions and potentials. The excitation energies of the toroidal states at $I=28$, 36, 44$\hbar$ reasonably reproduce the observed three resonances extracted from the 7-$α$ de-excitation of $^{28}$Si. The $α$ clustering of these toroidal states is supported by the $α$-localization function.

Stability of the linear chain structure for $^{12}$C in covariant density functional theory on a 3D lattice

The stability of the linear chain structure of three $α$ clusters for $^{12}$C against the bending and fission is investigated in the cranking covariant density functional theory, in which the equation of motion is solved on a 3D lattice with the inverse Hamiltonian and the Fourier spectral methods. Starting from a twisted three $α$ initial configuration, it is found that the linear chain structure is stable when the rotational frequency is within the range of $\sim$2.0 MeV to $\sim$2.5 MeV. Beyond this range, the final states are not stable against fission. By examining the density distributions and the occupation of single-particle levels, however, these fissions are found to arise from the occupation of unphysical continuum with large angular momenta. To properly remove these unphysical continuum, a damping function for the cranking term is introduced. Eventually, the stable linear chain structure could survive up to the rotational frequency $\sim$3.5 MeV, but the fission still occurs when the rotational frequency approaches to $\sim$4.0 MeV.

Improved measurement of the absolute branching fraction of $D^{+}\rightarrow \bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ$

By analyzing 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at $\sqrt s=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0μ^{+}ν_μ)=(8.72 \pm 0.07_{\rm stat.} \pm 0.18_{\rm sys.})\%$, which is consistent with previous measurements within uncertainties but with significantly improved precision. Combining the Particle Data Group values of ${\mathcal B}(D^0\to K^-μ^+ν_μ)$, ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e})$, and the lifetimes of the $D^0$ and $D^+$ mesons with the value of ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ)$ measured in this work, we determine the following ratios of partial widths: $Γ(D^0\to K^-μ^+ν_μ)/Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0μ^{+}ν_μ)=0.963\pm0.044$ and $Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 μ^{+}ν_μ)/Γ(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e})=0.988\pm0.033$.

Measurement of the absolute branching fraction of $D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e}$ via $\bar K^0\toπ^0π^0$

By analyzing 2.93 fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt s=3.773$ GeV with the BESIII detector, we measure the absolute branching fraction of the semileptonic decay $D^+\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e}$ to be ${\mathcal B}(D^{+}\rightarrow\bar K^0 e^{+}ν_{e})=(8.59 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.21)\%$ using $\bar K^0\to K^0_S\to π^0π^0$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. Our result is consistent with previous measurements within uncertainties.

The Born cross sections are measured to be $(3.7 \pm 0.7 \pm 0.3)$ and $(3.9 \pm 0.8 \pm 0.3)$ pb at $\sqrt{s} = 4.226$ and $4.258$ GeV, respectively, where the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Upper limits at the 90% confidence level of the Born cross sections are also reported at other 12 energy points.

Observation of $h_{c}$ radiative decay $h_{c} \rightarrow γη'$ and evidence for $h_{c} \rightarrow γη$

A search for radiative decays of the $P$-wave spin singlet charmonium resonance $h_c$ is performed based on $4.48 \times 10^{8}$ $ψ'$ events collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Events of the reaction channels $h_{c} \rightarrow γη'$ and $γη$ are observed with a statistical significance of $8.4 σ$ and $4.0 σ$, respectively, for the first time. The branching fractions of $h_{c} \rightarrow γη'$ and $h_{c} \rightarrow γη$ are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(h_{c} \rightarrow γη')=(1.52 \pm 0.27 \pm 0.29)\times10^{-3}$ and $\mathcal{B}(h_{c} \rightarrow γη)=(4.7 \pm 1.5 \pm 1.4)\times10^{-4}$, respectively, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic uncertainties.

Observation of an anomalous line shape of the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ mass spectrum near the $p\bar{p}$ mass threshold in $J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$

Using $1.09\times10^{9}$ $J/ψ$ events collected by the BESIII experiment in 2012, we study the $J/ψ\rightarrowγη^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ process and observe a significant abrupt change in the slope of the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ invariant mass distribution at the proton-antiproton ($p\bar{p}$) mass threshold. We use two models to characterize the $η^{\prime}π^{+}π^{-}$ line shape around $1.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}$: one which explicitly incorporates the opening of a decay threshold in the mass spectrum (Flatté formula), and another which is the coherent sum of two resonant amplitudes. Both fits show almost equally good agreement with data, and suggest the existence of either a broad state around $1.85~\text{GeV}/c^{2}$ with strong couplings to $p\bar{p}$ final states or a narrow state just below the $p\bar{p}$ mass threshold. Although we cannot distinguish between the fits, either one supports the existence of a $p\bar{p}$ molecule-like state or bound state with greater than $7σ$ significance.

Tidal wave in $^{102}$Pd: An extended five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian description

The five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian based on the covariant density functional theory is applied to investigate the observed tidal wave mode in the yrast band of $^{102}$Pd. The energy spectra, the relations between the spin and the rotational frequency, and the ratios of $B(E2)/\mathcal{J}(I)$ in the yrast band are well reproduced by introducing the empirical $ab$ formula for the moments of inertia. This $ab$ formula is related to the fourth order effect of collective momentum in the collective Hamiltonian. It is also shown that the shape evolution in the tidal wave is determined microscopically by the competition between the rotational kinetic energy and the collective potential in the framework of the collective Hamiltonian.

Wobbling motion in $^{135}$Pr within a collective Hamiltonian

The recently reported wobbling bands in $^{135}$Pr are investigated by the collective Hamiltonian, in which the collective parameters, including the collective potential and the mass parameter, are respectively determined from the tilted axis cranking (TAC) model and the harmonic frozen alignment (HFA) formula. It is shown that the experimental energy spectra of both yrast and wobbling bands are well reproduced by the collective Hamiltonian. It is confirmed that the wobbling mode in $^{135}$Pr changes from transverse to longitudinal with the rotational frequency. The mechanism of this transition is revealed by analyzing the effective moments of inertia of the three principal axes, and the corresponding variation trend of the wobbling frequency is determined by the softness and shapes of the collective potential.

Impact of pairing correlations on the orientation of the nuclear

For the first time, the tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory with pairing correlations has been formulated and implemented in a fully self-consistent and microscopic way to investigate the evolution of the spin axis and the pairing effects in rotating triaxial nuclei. The measured energy spectrum and transition probabilities for the Nd-135 yrast band are reproduced well without any ad hoc renormalization factors when pairing effects are taken into account. A transition from collective to chiral rotation has been demonstrated. It is found that pairing correlations introduce additional admixtures in the single-particle orbitals, and, thus, influence the structure of tilted axis rotating nuclei by reducing the magnitude of the proton and neutron angular momenta while merging their direction.

Interplay between antimagnetic and collective rotation in Fe-58

The self-consistent tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory based on the point- coupling interaction PC-PK1 is applied to investigate the possible existence of antimagnetic ro- tation in the nucleus Fe-58. The observed data for Band 3 and Band 4 are reproduced well with two assigned configurations. It is found that both bands correspond to a rotation of antimagnetic character, but, due to the presence of considerable deformation, the interplay between antimag- netic rotation and collective motion plays an essential role. In particular for Band 4, collective rotation is dominant in the competition with antimagnetic rotation. Moreover, it is shown that the behavior of the ratios between the dynamic moments of inertia and the B(E2) values reflects the interplay between antimagnetic and collective rotation.

Collective Hamiltonian for wobbling modes

The simple, longitudinal, and transverse wobblers are systematically studied within the framework of collective Hamiltonian, where the collective potential and mass parameter included are obtained based on the tilted axis cranking approach. Solving the collective Hamiltonian by diagonalization, the energies and the wave functions of the wobbling states are obtained. The obtained results are compared with those by harmonic approximation formula and particle rotor model. The wobbling energies calculated by the collective Hamiltonian are closer to the exact solutions by particle rotor model than harmonic approximation formula. It is confirmed that the wobbling frequency increases with the rotational frequency in simple and longitudinal wobbling motions while decreases in transverse wobbling motion. These variation trends are related to the stiffness of the collective potential in the collective Hamiltonian.

Green's function method for single-particle resonant states in relativistic mean field theory

Relativistic mean field theory is formulated with the Green's function method in coordinate space to investigate the single-particle bound states and resonant states on the same footing. Taking the density of states for free particle as a reference, the energies and widths of single-particle resonant states are extracted from the density of states without any ambiguity. As an example, the energies and widths for single-neutron resonant states in $^{120}$Sn are compared with those obtained by the scattering phase-shift method, the analytic continuation in the coupling constant approach, the real stabilization method and the complex scaling method. Excellent agreements are found for the energies and widths of single-neutron resonant states.

Multiple chiral doublet bands of identical configuration in 103Rh

Three sets of chiral doublet band structures have been identified in the 103Rh nucleus. The properties of the observed chiral doublet bands are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. Two of them belong to an identical configuration, and provide the first experimental evidence for a novel type of multiple chiral doublets, where an "excited" chiral doublet of a configuration is seen together with the "yrast" one. This observation shows that the chiral geometry in nuclei can be robust against the increase of the intrinsic excitation energy.

Collective Hamiltonian for chiral modes

A collective model is proposed to describe the chiral rotation and vibration and applied to a system with one $h_{11/2}$ proton particle and one $h_{11/2}$ neutron hole coupled to a triaxial rigid rotor. The collective Hamiltonian is constructed from the potential energy and mass parameter obtained in the tilted axis cranking approach. By diagonalizing the collective Hamiltonian with a box boundary condition, it is found that for the chiral rotation, the partner states become more degenerate with the increase of the cranking frequency, and for the chiral vibrations, their important roles for the collective excitation are revealed at the beginning of the chiral rotation region.

Evidence for Multiple Chiral Doublet Bands in $^{133}$Ce

Two distinct sets of chiral-partner bands have been identified in the nucleus $^{133}$Ce. They constitute a multiple chiral doublet (M$χ$D), a phenomenon predicted by relativistic mean field (RMF) calculations and observed experimentally here for the first time. The properties of these chiral bands are in good agreement with results of calculations based on a combination of the constrained triaxial RMF theory and the particle-rotor model.

Microscopic understanding for the simplicity of the quadrupole moments newly observed in Cd isotopes

The simplicity in the nuclear quadrupole moments reported recently in $^{107-129}$Cd, i.e., a linear increase of the ${11/2}^-$ quadrupole moments, is investigated microscopically with the covariant density functional theory. Using the newly developed functional PC-PK1, the quadrupole moments as well as their linear increase tendency with the neutron number are excellently reproduced without any {\it ad hoc} parameters. The core polarization is found to be very important and contributes almost half of the quadrupole moments. The simplicity of the linear increase is revealed to be due to the pairing correlation which smears out the abrupt changes induced by the single-particle shell structure.

Progress on tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory for nuclear magnetic and antimagnetic rotation

Magnetic rotation and antimagnetic rotation are exotic rotational phenomena observed in weakly deformed or near-spherical nuclei, which are respectivelyinterpreted in terms of the shears mecha-nism and two shearslike mechanism. Since their observations, magnetic rotation and antimagnetic rotation phenomena have been mainly investigated in the framework of tilted axis cranking based on the pairing plus quadrupole model. For the last decades, the covariant density functional theory and its extension have been proved to be successful in describing series of nuclear ground-states and excited states properties, including the binding energies, radii, single-particle spectra, resonance states, halo phenomena, magnetic moments, magnetic rotation, low-lying excitations, shape phase transitions, collective rotation and vibrations, etc. This review will mainly focus on the tilted axis cranking covariant density functional theory and its application for the magnetic rotation and antimagnetic rotation phenomena.

Magnetic rotations in 198Pb and 199Pb within covariant density functional theory

Well-known examples of shears bands in the nuclei 198Pb and 199Pb are investigated within tilted axis cranking relativistic mean-field theory. Energy spectra, the relation between spin and rotational frequency, deformation parameters and reduced $M1$ and $E2$ transition probabilities are calculated. The results are in good agreement with available data and with calculations based on the phenomenological pairing plus-quadrupole-quadrupole tilted-axis cranking model. It is shown that covariant density functional theory provides a successful microscopic and fully self-consistent description of magnetic rotation in the Pb region showing the characteristic properties as the shears mechanism and relatively large B(M1) transitions decreasing with increasing spin.

Octupole deformation and Ra puzzle in reflection asymmetric covariant density functional theory

Reflection asymmetric covariant density functional theory(CDFT) based on the point-coupling interaction is established on a two-center harmonic-oscillator basis and applied to investigate the Ra puzzle, i.e., the anomalous enhancement of the residual proton-neutron interactions for Ra isotopes around N=135. The octupole deformation and shape evolution in the Ra and Rn isotopes are examined in the potential energy surfaces in(beta2, beta3) plane by the constrained reflection asymmetric calculations. The residual proton-neutron interactions extracted from the double difference of the binding energies for Ra isotopes are compared with the data as well as the axial and the triaxial calculations. It is found that the octupole deformation is responsible for the Ra puzzle in the microscopic CDFT.

Chirality in odd-$A$ Rh isotopes within triaxial particle rotor model

Adopting the fully quantal triaxial particle rotor model, the candidate chiral doublet bands in odd-$A$ nuclei $^{103}$Rh and $^{105}$Rh with $πg_{9/2}^{-1}\otimesνh^{2}_{11/2}$ configuration are studied. For the doublet bands in both nuclei, agreement is excellent for the observed energies over entire spin range and $B(M1)/B(E2)$ at higher spin range. The evolution of the chiral geometry with angular momentum is discussed in detail by the angular momentum components and their probability distributions. Chirality is found to change from chiral vibration to nearly static chirality at spin $I=37/2$ and back to another type of chiral vibration at higher spin. The influence of the triaxial deformation $γ$ is also studied.

The existence of M$χ$D phenomenon in $^{105}$Rh is highly expected.

Novel structure for magnetic rotation bands in 60Ni

The self-consistent tilted axis cranking relativistic mean-field theory based on a point-coupling interaction has been established and applied to investigate systematically the newly observed shears bands in 60Ni. The tilted angles, deformation parameters, energy spectra, and reduced M1 and $E2$ transition probabilities have been studied in a fully microscopic and self-consistent way for various configurations and rotational frequencies. It is found the competition between the configurations and the transitions from the magnetic to the electric rotations have to be considered in order to reproduce the energy spectra as well as the band crossing phenomena. The tendency of the experimental electromagnetic transition ratios B(M1)/B(E2) is in a good agreement with the data, in particular, the B(M1) values decrease with increasing spin as expected for the shears mechanism, whose characteristics are discussed in detail by investigating the various contributions to the total angular momentum as well.

The first candidate for chiral nuclei in the $A\sim80$ mass region: $^{80}$Br

Excited states of $^{80}$Br have been investigated via the $^{76}$Ge($^{11}$B, $α$3n) and $^{76}$Ge($^{7}$Li, 3n) reactions and a new $ΔI$ = 1 band has been identified which resides $\sim$ 400 keV above the yrast band. Based on the experimental results and their comparison with the triaxial particle rotor model calculated ones, a chiral character of the two bands within the $πg_{9/2}\otimes νg_{9/2}$ configuration is proposed, which provides the first evidence for chirality in the $A\sim80$ region.

Chiral geometry of higher excited bands in triaxial nuclei with particle-hole configuration

The lowest six rotational bands have been studied in the particle-rotor model with the particle-hole configuration $πh^1_{11/2}\otimesνh^{-1}_{11/2}$ and different triaxiality parameter $γ$. Both constant and spin-dependent variable moments of inertial (CMI and VMI) are introduced. The energy spectra, electromagnetic transition probabilities, angular momentum components and $K$-distribution have been examined. It is shown that, besides the band 1 and band 2, the predicted band 3 and band 4 in the calculations of both CMI and VMI for atomic nuclei with $γ=30^\circ$ could be interpreted as chiral doublet bands.

Octupole deformation for Ba isotopes in a reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach

The potential energy surfaces of even-even $^{142-156}$Ba are investigated in the constrained reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach with parameter set PK1. It is shown that for the ground states, $^{142}$Ba is near spherical,$^{156}$Ba well quadrupole-deformed, and in between $^{144-154}$Ba octupole deformed. In particular, the nuclei $^{148,150}$Ba with $N=92,94$ have the largest octupole deformations. By including the octupole degree of freedom, energy gaps $N=88$, $N=94$ and $Z=56$ near Fermi surfaces for the single-particle levels in $^{148}$Ba with $β_2\sim 0.26$ and $β_3\sim 0.17$ are found. Furthermore, the performance of the octupole deformation driving pairs ($ν2f_{7/2}$, $ν1i_{13/2}$) and ($π2d_{5/2}$, $π1h_{11/2}$) is demonstrated by analyzing the single-particle levels near Fermi surfaces in $^{148}$Ba.

Octupole degree of freedom for the critical-point candidate nucleus $^{152}$Sm in a reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach

The potential energy surfaces of even-even $^{146-156}$Sm are investigated in the constrained reflection-asymmetric relativistic mean-field approach with parameter set PK1. It is shown that the critical-point candidate nucleus $^{152}$Sm marks the shape/phase transition not only from U(5) to SU(3) symmetry, but also from the octupole-deformed ground state in $^{150}$Sm to the quadrupole-deformed ground state in $^{154}$Sm. By including the octupole degree of freedom, an energy gap near the Fermi surface for single-particle levels in $^{152}$Sm with $β_2 = 0.14 \sim 0.26$ is found, and the important role of the octupole deformation driving pair $ν2f_{7/2}$ and $ν1i_{13/2}$ is demonstrated.

Chirality in odd-$A$ nucleus $^{135}$Nd in particle rotor model

A particle rotor model is developed which couples several valence protons and neutrons to a rigid triaxial rotor core. It is applied to investigating the chirality in odd-$A$ nucleus $^{135}$Nd with $πh_{11/2}^2\otimesνh^{-1}_{11/2}$ configuration for the first time in a fully quantal approach. For the two chiral sister bands, the observed energies and the $B(M1)$ and $B(E2)$ values for the in-band as well as interband transitions are reproduced excellently. Root mean square values of the angular momentum components and their probability distributions are used for discussing in detail the chiral geometry of the aplanar rotation and its evolution with angular momentum. Chirality is found to change from a soft chiral vibration to nearly static chirality at spin $I=39/2$ and back to another type of chiral vibration at higher spin.
