Complex Scaling in Neutrino Mass Matrix

Using the residual symmetry approach, we propose a complex extension of the scaling ansatz on $M_ν$ which allows a nonzero mass for each of the three light neutrinos as well as a nonvanishing $θ_{13}$. Leptonic Dirac CP violation must be maximal while atmospheric neutrino mixing need not to be exactly maximal. Each of the two Majorana phases, to be probed by the search for $0νββ$ decay, has to be zero or $π$ and a normal neutrino mass hierarchy is allowed.

Dwarf Galaxy $γ$-excess and 3.55 keV X-ray Line In A Nonthermal Dark Matter Model

Recent data from Reticulum II (RetII) require the energy range of the FermiLAT $γ$-excess to be $\sim$ $2-10$ GeV. We adjust our unified nonthermal Dark Matter (DM) model to accommodate this. We have two extra scalars beyond the Standard Model to also explain 3.55 keV X-ray line. Now the mass of the heavier of them has to be increased to lie around 250 GeV, while that of the lighter one remains at 7.1 keV. This requires a new seed mechanism for the $γ$-excess and new Boltzmann equations for the generation of the DM relic density. All concerned data for RetII and the X-ray line can now be fitted well and consistency with other indirect limits attained.

Extended scaling and residual flavor symmetry in the neutrino Majorana mass matrix

The residual symmetry approach, along with a complex extension for some flavor invariance, is a powerful tool to uncover the flavor structure of the $3\times3$ neutrino Majorana mass matrix $M_ν$ towards gaining insights into neutrino mixing. We utilize this to propose a complex extension of the real scaling ansatz for $M_ν$ which was introduced some years ago. Unlike the latter, our proposal allows a nonzero mass for each of the three light neutrinos as well as a nonvanishing $θ_{13}$. A major result of this scheme is that leptonic Dirac CP-violation must be maximal while atmospheric neutrino mixing need not be exactly maximal. Moreover, each of the two allowed Majorana phases, to be probed by the search for nuclear $0νββ$ decay, has to be at one of its two CP-conserving values. There are other interesting consequences such as the allowed occurrence of a normal mass ordering which is not favored by the real scaling ansatz. Our predictions will be tested in ongoing and future neutrino oscillation experiments at T2K, NO$ν$A and DUNE.

Constrained analytical interrelations in neutrino mixing

Hermitian squared mass matrices of charged leptons and light neutrinos in the flavor basis are studied under general additive lowest order perturbations away from the tribimaximal (TBM) limit in which a weak basis with mass diagonal charged leptons is chosen. Simple analytical expressions are found for the three measurable TBM-deviants in terms of perturbation parameters appearing in the neutrino and charged lepton eigenstates in the flavor basis. Taking unnatural cancellations to be absent and charged lepton perturbation parameters to be small, interrelations are derived among masses, mixing angles and the amount of CP-violation.

Nonthermal Two Component Dark Matter Model for Fermi-LAT $γ$-ray excess and 3.55 keV X-ray Line

A two component model of nonthermal dark matter is formulated to simultaneously explain the Fermi-LAT results indicating a $γ$-ray excess observed from our Galactic Centre in the 1-3 GeV energy range and the detection of an X-ray line at 3.55 keV from extragalactic sources. Two additional Standard Model singlet scalar fields $S_2$ and $S_3$ are introduced. These fields couple among themselves and with the Standard Model Higgs doublet $H$. The interaction terms among the scalar fields, namely $H$, $S_2$ and $S_3$, are constrained by the application of a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2\times \mathbb{Z}^\prime_2$ symmetry which breaks softly to a remnant $\mathbb{Z}^{\prime \prime}_2$ symmetry. This residual discrete symmetry is then spontaneously broken through an MeV order vacuum expectation value $u$ of the singlet scalar field $S_3$. The resultant physical scalar spectrum has the Standard Model like Higgs as $χ_{{}_{{}_1}}$ with $M_{χ_{{}_{{}_1}}}\sim 125$ GeV, a moderately heavy scalar $χ_{{}_{{}_2}}$ with $50 \,\,{\rm GeV} \leq M_{χ_{{}_{{}_2}}}\leq 80\,\,{\rm GeV}$ and a light $χ_{{}_{{}_3}}$ with $M_{χ_{{}_{{}_3}}} \sim 7$ keV. There is only tiny mixing between $χ_{{}_{{}_1}}$ and $χ_{{}_{{}_2}}$ as well as between $χ_{{}_{{}_1}}$ and $χ_{{}_{{}_3}}$. The lack of importance of domain wall formation in the present scenario from the spontaneous breaking of the discrete symmetry ${\mathbb{Z}_2^{\prime\prime}}$, provided $u\leq 10$ MeV, is pointed out. We find that our proposed two component dark matter model is able to explain successfully both the above mentioned phenomena $-$ the Fermi-LAT observed $γ$-ray excess (from the $χ_{{}_{{}_2}} \rightarrow {\rm b} \bar{\rm b}$ decay mode) and the observation of the X-ray line (from the decay channel $χ_{{}_{{}_3}}\rightarrowγγ$) by the XMM-Newton observatory.

Testable constraint on near-tribimaximal neutrino mixing

General lowest order perturbations to hermitian squared mass matrices of leptons are considered away from the tribimaximal (TBM) limit in which a weak flavor basis with mass diagonal charged leptons is chosen. The three measurable TBM deviants are expressed linearly in terms of perturbation induced dimensionless coefficients appearing in the charged lepton and neutrino flavor eigenstates. With unnatural cancellations assumed to be absent and the charged lepton perturbation contributions to their flavor eigenstates argued to be small, we analytically derive the following result. Within lowest order perturbations, a deviation from maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing and the amount of CP violation in neutrino oscillations cannot both be large (i.e. $12$-$17 \% $), posing the challenge of verification to forthcoming experiments at the intensity frontier.

Maximal zero textures of the inverse seesaw with broken $μτ$ symmetry

The inverse neutrino seesaw, characterised by only one source of lepton number violation at an ultralight $O$(keV) scale and observable new phenomena at TeV energies accessible to the LHC, is considered. Maximal zero textures of the $3\times 3$ lighter and heavier Dirac mass matrices of neutral leptons, appearing in the Lagarangian for such an inverse seesaw, are studied within the framework of $μτ$ symmetry in a specified weak basis. That symmetry ensures the identity of the positions of maximal zeros of the heavy neutrino mass matrix and its inverse. It then suffices to study the maximal zeros of the lighter Dirac mass matrix and those of the inverse of the heavier one since they come in a product. The observed absence of any unmixed neutrino flavour and the assumption of no strictly massless physical neutrino state allow only eight $4$-zero $\times$ $4$-zero, eight $4$-zero $\times$ $6$-zero and eight $6$-zero $\times$ $4$-zero combinations. The additional requirement of leptogenesis is shown to eliminate the last sixteen textures. The surviving eight $4$-zero $\times$ $4$-zero textures are subjected to the most general explicit $μτ$ symmetry breaking terms in the Lagrangian in order to accommodate the nonzero value of $θ_{13}$ in the observed range. A full diagonalisation is then carried out. On numerical comparison with all extant and relevant neutrino (antineutrino) data, seven of these eight combination textures in five neutrino matrix forms are found to be allowed, leading to five distinct neutrino mass matrices. Two of these permit only a normal (and the other three only an inverted) mass ordering of the light neutrinos.

$θ_{13}$, $μτ$ symmetry breaking and neutrino Yukawa textures

Within the type-I seesaw and in the basis where charged lepton and heavy neutrino mass matrices are real and diagonal, $μτ$ symmetric four and three zero neutrino Yukawa textures are perturbed by lowest order $μτ$ symmetry breaking terms. These perturbations are taken to be the {\it most general ones for those textures}. For quite small values of those symmetry breaking parameters, permitting a lowest order analysis, current best-fit ranges of neutrino mass squared differences and mixing angles are shown to be accommodable, including a value of $θ_{13}$ in the observed range, provided all the light neutrinos have an inverted mass ordering.

Four lepton flavor violating signals at the LHC

Some yet unknown dynamics is expected to be at work behind the flavor puzzles of the Standard Model. Speculations exist that this may manifest itself in significant strength at the terascale. One consequence may be lepton flavor violation with total lepton number conserved. Already observed in neutrino oscillation experiments, such a phenomenon may show up more prominently at TeV energies, thus signaling a completely new physics. Proposed flavor violating charged dilepton states have already been studied with reference to the LHC. Here we study the production and detection at the LHC of flavor violating charged quadrileptons which are shown to have certain advantages over dileptons in searching for lepton flavor violation. A classification of all six-fermionic operators, in the chiral basis and contributing to such processes, is made and the corresponding cross section for each in 14 TeV pp collisions is computed under the hypothesis of single operator dominance. We further present the sensitivity reach of the new physics scale $Λ$ in terms of the integrated luminosity.

Heuristic based task scheduling in multiprocessor systems with genetic algorithm by choosing the eligible processor

In multiprocessor systems, one of the main factors of systems' performance is task scheduling. The well the task be distributed among the processors the well be the performance. Again finding the optimal solution of scheduling the tasks into the processors is NP-complete, that is, it will take a lot of time to find the optimal solution. Many evolutionary algorithms (e.g. Genetic Algorithm, Simulated annealing) are used to reach the near optimal solution in linear time. In this paper we propose a heuristic for genetic algorithm based task scheduling in multiprocessor systems by choosing the eligible processor on educated guess. From comparison it is found that this new heuristic based GA takes less computation time to reach the suboptimal solution.

Neutrino Yukawa textures within type-I see-saw

The arbitrariness of Yukawa couplings can be reduced by the imposition of some flavor symmetries and/or by the realization of texture zeros. We review neutrino Yukawa textures with zeros within the framework of the type-I seesaw with three heavy right chiral neutrinos and in the basis where the latter and the charged leptons are mass diagonal. An assumed non-vanishing mass of every ultralight neutrino and the observed non-decoupling of any neutrino generation allow a maximum of four zeros in the Yukawa coupling matrix $Y_ν$ in family space. There are seventy two such textures. We show that the requirement of an exact $μτ$ symmetry, coupled with the observational constraints, reduces these seventy two allowed textures to only four corresponding to just two different forms of the light neutrino mass matrix $M_{νA}/M_{νB}$, resulting in an inverted/normal mass ordering. The effect of each of these on measurable quantities can be described, apart from an overall factor of the neutrino mass scale, in terms of two real parameters and a phase angle all of which are within very constrained ranges. The masses and Majorana phases of ultralight neutrinos are predicted within definite ranges with $3σ$ laboratory and cosmological observational inputs. The rate for $0νββ$ decay, though generally below the reach of planned experiments, could approach it in some parameteric regions. Within the same framework, we also study Yukawa textures with a fewer number of zeros, but with exact $μτ$ symmetry. We further formulate the detailed scheme of the explicit breaking of $μτ$ symmetry in terms of three small parameters for allowed four zero textures. The observed sizable mixing between the first and third generations of neutrinos is shown to follow for a suitable choice of these symmetry breaking parameters.

Baryon asymmetry from leptogenesis with four zero neutrino Yukawa textures

The generation of the right amount of baryon asymmetry $η$ of the Universe from supersymmetric leptogenesis is studied within the type-I seesaw framework with three heavy singlet Majorana neutrinos $N_i\,\,(i = 1,2,3)$ and their superpartners. We assume the occurrence of four zeroes in the neutrino Yukawa coupling matrix $Y_ν$, taken to be $μτ$ symmetric, in the weak basis where $N_i$ (with real masses $M_i>0$) and the charged leptons $l_α\,\, (α= e,μ,τ)$ are mass diagonal. The quadrant of the single nontrivial phase, allowed in the corresponding light neutrino mass matrix $m_ν$, gets fixed and additional constraints ensue from the requirement of matching $η$ with its observed value. Special attention is paid to flavor effects in the washout of the lepton asymmetry. We also comment on the role of small departures from high scale $μτ$ symmetry due to RG evolution.

Neutrino masses, cosmological bound and four zero Yukawa textures

Four zero neutrino Yukawa textures in a specified weak basis, combined with $μτ$ symmetry and type-I seesaw, yield a highly constrained and predictive scheme. Two alternately viable $3\times3$ light neutrino Majorana mass matrices $m_{νA}/m_{νB}$ result with inverted/normal mass ordering. Neutrino masses, Majorana in character and predicted within definite ranges with laboratory and cosmological inputs, will have their sum probed cosmologically. The rate for $0νββ$ decay, though generally below the reach of planned experiments, could approach it in some parameter region. Departure from $μτ$ symmetry due to RG evolution from a high scale and consequent CP violation, with a Jarlskog invariant whose magnitude could almost reach $6\times 10^{-3}$, are explored.

'Mu-Tau' symmetry, tribimaximal mixing and four zero neutrino Yukawa textures

Within the type-I seesaw framework with three heavy right chiral neutrinos and in the basis where the latter and the charged leptons are mass diagonal, a near `mu-tau' symmetry in the neutrino sector is strongly suggested by the neutrino oscillation data. There is further evidence for a close to the tribimaximal mixing pattern which subsumes `mu-tau' symmetry. On the other hand, the assumption of a (maximally allowed) four zero texture in the Yukawa coupling matrix Y_nu in the same basis leads to a highly constrained and predictive theoretical scheme. We show that the requirement of an exact `mu-tau' symmetry, coupled with observational constraints, reduces the `seventy two' allowed textures in such a `Y_nu' to 'only four' corresponding to just two different forms of the light neutrino mass matrix `m_nu'. The effect of each of these on measurable quantities can be described, apart from an overall factor of the neutrino mass scale, in terms of two real parameters and a phase angle all of which are within very constrained ranges. The additional input of a tribimaximal mixing reduces these three parameters to `only one' with a very nearly fixed value. Implications for both flavored and unflavored leptogenesis as well as radiative lepton flavor violating decays are discussed. We also investigate the stability of these conclusions under small deviations due to renormalization group running from a high scale where the four zero texture as well as `mu-tau' symmetry or the tribimaximal mixing pattern are imposed.

Developments in high energy theory

This non-technical review article is aimed at readers with some physics background, including beginning research students. It provides a panoramic view of the main theoretical developments in high energy physics since its inception more than half a century ago, a period in which experiments have spanned an enormous range of energies, theories have been developed leading up to the Standard Model, and proposals -- including the radical paradigm of String Theory -- have been made to go beyond the Standard Model. The list of references provided here is not intended to properly credit all original work but rather to supply the reader with a few pointers to the literature, specifically highlighting work done by Indian authors.

Event shape discrimination of supersymmetry from large extra dimensions at a linear collider

The production of a charged lepton (e/mu) pair with a large missing energy at a linear collider is discussed as a means of distinguishing the minimal supersymmetry (MSSM) scenario from that with large extra dimensions (ADD) for parameter ranges where the total cross sections are comparable for both. Analyses in terms of event shape variables, specifically sphericity and thrust, are shown to enable a clear discrimination in this regard.

CP violation and matter effect for a variable earth density in very long baseline experiments

The perturbative treatment of subdominant oscillation and the matter effect in neutrino beams/superbeams, propagating over long baselines and being used to look for CP violation, is studied here for a general matter density function varying with distance. New lowest order analytic expressions are given for different flavour transition and survival probabilities in a general neutrino mixing basis and a variable earth matter density profile. It is demonstrated that the matter effect in the muon neutrino (antineutrino) flavour survival probability vanishes to this order, provided the depletion, observed for atmospheric muon neutrinos and antineutrinos at super-Kamiokande, is strictly maximal. This result is independent of the earth density profile and the distance L between the source and the detector. In the general variable density case we show that one cannot separate the matter induced asymmetry from a genuine CP effect by keeping two detectors at distances $L_1$ and $L_2$ from the source while maintaining a fixed ratio $L_1/E_1 = L_2/E_2$. This needs to be done numerically and we estimate the asymmetry generated by the earth matter effect with particular density profiles and some chosen parameters for very long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments.

New interactions in neutrino oscillations with three light flavors

If one assumes solar and LSND neutrino oscillations to explain the corresponding data, then the atmospheric neutrino deficit cannot be accommodated within the Standard Model with three light flavors, unless one ignores the data's zenith-angle dependence. We propose a novel solution to this problem by postulating large anomalous diagonal $ν_τ$-quark interactions which affect $ν_μ- ν_τ$ oscillations traversing the Earth and induce the observed zenith-angle dependence.

A general treatment of oblique parameters

A reexamination is made of one-loop oblique electroweak corrections. General definitions are given of the oblique parameters without reference to any $q^2$-expansion scheme. The old oblique parameters S,T and U are defined as differences of gauge boson vacuum polarization $Π$-functions and suffice to describe certain observable ratios on the Z-peak and the $ρ$ parameter at $q^2=0$. Regarding the new oblique parameters V,W and X, the first two are defined in terms of differences of $Π$-functions as well as the wavefunction renormalization of the corresponding weak boson, and the third in terms of the difference of differences of two $Π$-functions for $γ-Z$ mixing. Explicit expressions for measurable quantities involving all six oblique parameters are given and experimental bounds are obtained on the latter, some for the first time. A review of these constraints suggests that the linear approximation of Peskin and Takeuchi is robust.

Model of Four Light Neutrinos in the Light of All Present Data

Motivated by existing and recent data on possible neutrino oscillations, we propose a model of four light neutrinos ($ν_e, ν_μ, ν_τ$, and a singlet $ν_S$) with a pattern of masses and mixing derivable from a $Z_5$ discrete symmetry and the seesaw mechanism. Atmospheric neutrino oscillations occur between $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ as pseudo-Dirac partners; whereas solar neutrino oscillations occur between $ν_e$ and $ν_S$, a linear combination of which is massless. Additional oscillations may occur between $ν_e$ and $ν_μ$ to account for the recent observation of the LSND (Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector) experiment.

Constraints on Baryon-Nonconserving Yukawa Couplings in a Supersymmetric Theory

The 1-loop evolution of couplings in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, extended to include baryon nonconserving $(B\!\!\!/)$ operators through explicit $R$-parity violation, is considered keeping only $B\!\!\!/$ superpotential terms involving the maximum possible number of third generation superfields. If all retained Yukawa couplings $Y_i$ are required to remain in the perturbative domain $(Y_i < 1)$ upto the scale of gauge group unification, upper bounds ensue on the magnitudes of the $B\!\!\!/$ coupling strengths at the supersymmetry breaking scale, independent of the model of unification. They turn out to be similar to the corresponding fixed point values reached from a wide range of $Y_i$ (including all $Y_i$ greater than unity) at the unification scale. The coupled evolution of the top and $B\!\!\!/$ Yukawa couplings results in a reduction of the fixed point value of the former.

Radiative Electroweak Parameters

The status of the present precision measurements of electroweak observables is reviewed with specific reference to the radiative parameters $S,T,U$ or equivalently $ε_1,ε_2,ε_3$. The significance of the obliqueness hypothesis is underlined and the importance of the ``local fit'' method of extracting these parameters from the data is emphasized. Possible new physics implications are briefly touched upon.
