The JLMS formula in a large code with approximate error correction

Gauge/gravity duality is often described as a quantum error correcting code. However, as seen in the Jafferis-Lewkowycz-Maldacena-Suh (JLMS) formula, exact quantum error correction with complementary recovery (and thus entanglement wedge reconstruction) emerges only in the limit $G \to 0$. As a result, precise arguments controlling error terms have focused on what we call `small' codes which, as $G \to 0$, describe only perturbative excitations near a given classical solution. Such settings are quite restrictive and, in particular, they prohibit discussion of any modular flow that would change the classical background. As a result, they forbid consideration of modular flows generated by semiclassical bulk states at order-one modular parameters. In contrast, we present a single `large' code for the bulk theory that can accommodate such flows and, in particular, in the $G \to 0$ limit includes superpositions of states associated with distinct classical backgrounds. This large code is assembled from small codes that each satisfy an approximate Faulkner-Lewkowycz-Maldacena formula. In this extended setting we clarify the meaning of the (approximate) JLMS relation between bulk and boundary modular Hamiltonians and quantify its validity in an appropriate class of states.

Large and Small Corrections to the JLMS Formula from Replica Wormholes

The JLMS formula relates the bulk and boundary relative entropies and is fundamental to the holographic dictionary, providing justification for entanglement wedge reconstruction. We revisit the replica trick for relative entropy and find corrections of the JLMS formula in a variety of scenarios, even after accounting for effects of quantum extremality. We analyze the problem in the PSSY model, a model of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity coupled to end-of-the-world branes. We find non-perturbative (in $G$) corrections that are always present, arising from subdominant replica wormhole gravitational saddles that indicate the approximate error-correcting nature of AdS/CFT. Near entanglement phase transitions, these saddles can get enhanced to large corrections. We find $O\left(G^{-1/2}\right)$ corrections arising from area fluctuations and $O\left(G^{-1}\right)$ corrections from incompressible bulk quantum states. Lastly, we find our most surprising result, an infinite violation of the JLMS formula after the Page time arising from a rank deficiency in the bulk entanglement spectrum. We discuss similar calculations in tensor networks and comment on the implications for bulk reconstruction.

The Spacetime Geometry of Fixed-Area States in Gravitational Systems

The concept of fixed-area states has proven useful for recent studies of quantum gravity, especially in connection with gravitational holography. We explore the Lorentz-signature spacetime geometry intrinsic to such fixed-area states in this paper. This contrasts with previous treatments which focused instead on Euclidean-signature saddles for path integrals that prepare such states. We analyze general features of fixed-area state geometries and construct explicit examples. The spacetime metrics are real at real times and have no conical singularities. With enough symmetry the classical metrics are in fact smooth, though more generally their curvatures feature power-law divergences along null congruences launched orthogonally from the fixed-area surface. While we argue that such divergences are not problematic at the classical level, quantum fields in fixed-area states feature stronger divergences. At the quantum level we thus expect fixed-area states to be well-defined only when the fixed-area surface is appropriately smeared.

A Renyi Quantum Null Energy Condition: Proof for Free Field Theories

The Quantum Null Energy Condition (QNEC) is a lower bound on the stress-energy tensor in quantum field theory that has been proved quite generally. It can equivalently be phrased as a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of the relative entropy $S_{\text{rel}}(ρ||σ)$ of an arbitrary state $ρ$ with respect to the vacuum $σ$. The relative entropy has a natural one-parameter family generalization, the Sandwiched Renyi divergence $S_n(ρ||σ)$, which also measures the distinguishability of two states for arbitrary $n\in[1/2,\infty)$. A Renyi QNEC, a positivity condition on the second null shape derivative of $S_n(ρ||σ)$, was conjectured in previous work. In this work, we study the Renyi QNEC for free and superrenormalizable field theories in spacetime dimension $d>2$ using the technique of null quantization. In the above setting, we prove the Renyi QNEC in the case $n>1$ for arbitrary states. We also provide counterexamples to the Renyi QNEC for $n<1$.

Entanglement Wedge Cross Sections Require Tripartite Entanglement

We argue that holographic CFT states require a large amount of tripartite entanglement, in contrast to the conjecture that their entanglement is mostly bipartite. Our evidence is that this mostly-bipartite conjecture is in sharp conflict with two well-supported conjectures about the entanglement wedge cross section surface $E_W$. If $E_W$ is related to either the CFT's reflected entropy or its entanglement of purification, then those quantities can differ from the mutual information at $\mathcal{O}(\frac{1}{G_N})$. We prove that this implies holographic CFT states must have $\mathcal{O}(\frac{1}{G_N})$ amounts of tripartite entanglement. This proof involves a new Fannes-type inequality for the reflected entropy, which itself has many interesting applications.

Competing Chiral Orders in the Topological Haldane-Hubbard Model of Spin-1/2 Fermions and Bosons

Motivated by experiments on ultracold atoms which have realized the Haldane model for a Chern insulator, we consider its strongly correlated Mott limit with spin-$1/2$ fermions. We find that slave rotor mean field theory yields gapped or gapless chiral spin liquid Mott insulators. To study competing magnetic orders, we consider the strong coupling effective spin Hamiltonian which includes chiral three-spin exchange. We obtain its classical phase diagram, uncovering various chiral magnetic orders including tetrahedral, cone, and noncoplanar spiral states which can compete with putative chiral quantum spin liquids. We study the effect of thermal fluctuations on these states, identifying crossovers in the spin chirality, and phase transitions associated with lattice symmetry breaking. We also discuss analogous effective spin Hamiltonians for correlated spin-$1/2$ bosons. Finally, we point out possible experimental implications of our results for cold atom experiments.
