Grassmannians in the Lattice points of Dilations of the Standard Simplex

A remarkable connection between the cohomology ring H∗(Gr(d,d+r),Z){\rm H^{\ast}(Gr}(d, d+r),\Z) of the Grasssmannian Gr(d,d+r){\rm Gr}(d,d+r) and the lattice points of the dilation rΔdrΔ_{d} of the standard d-simplex is investigated. The natural grading on the cohomology induces different gradings of the lattice points of rΔdrΔ_{d}. This leads to different refinements of the Ehrhart polynomial LΔd(r)L_{Δ_{d}}(r) of the standard dd-simplex. We study two of these refinements which are defined by the weights (1,1,…,1)(1,1,\dots,1) and (1,2,…,d)(1,2,\dots, d). One of the refinements interprets the Poincaré polynomial P(Gr(d,d+r),z){\rm P(Gr}(d,d+r),z) as the counting of the lattice points which lie on the slicing hyperplanes of the dilation rΔdrΔ_d. Therefore, on the combinatorial level the Poincaré polynomial of the Grassmannian Gr(d,d+r)(d,d+r) is a refinement of the Ehrhart polynomial LΔd(r)L_{Δ_d}(r) of the standard dd-simplex ΔdΔ_{d}.

Refined Ehrhart series and bigraded rings

We study a natural set of refinements of the Ehrhart series of a closed polytope, first considered by Chapoton. We compute the refined series in full generality for a simplex of dimension d, a cross-polytope of dimension d, respectively a hypercube of dimension d<4, using commutative algebra. We deduce summation formulae for products of q-integers with different arguments, generalizing a classical identity due to MacMahon and Carlitz. We also present a characterisation of a certain refined Eulerian polynomial in algebraic terms.

Equivariant cohomology theories and the pattern map

Billey and Braden defined a geometric pattern map on flag manifolds which extends the generalized pattern map of Billey and Postnikov on Weyl groups. The interaction of this torus equivariant map with the Bruhat order and its action on line bundles lead to formulas for its pullback on the equivariant cohomology ring and on equivariant K-theory. These formulas are in terms of the Borel presentation, the basis of Schubert classes, and localization at torus fixed points.

Cohomological consequences of the pattern map

Billey and Braden defined maps on flag manifolds that are the geometric counterpart of permutation patterns. A section of their pattern map is an embedding of the flag manifold of a Levi subgroup into the full flag manifold. We give two expressions for the induced map on cohomology. One is in terms of generators and the other is in terms of the Schubert basis. We show that the coefficients in the second expression are naturally Schubert structure constants and therefore positive. These formulas also hold for K-theory, and generalize known formulas in type A for cohomology and K-theory.
