Effective Hamiltonian based Monte Carlo for the BCS to BEC crossover in the attractive Hubbard model

We present an effective Hamiltonian based real-space approach for studying the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to the strong-coupling Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) crossover in the two-dimensional attractive Hubbard model at finite temperatures. We introduce and justify an effective classical Hamiltonian to describe the thermal fluctuations of the relevant auxiliary fields. Our results for $T_c$ and phase diagrams compare very well with those obtained from more sophisticated and {\it cpu}-intensive numerical methods. We demonstrate that the method works in the presence of disorder and is useful for a real-space description of the effect of disorder on superconductivity. From a combined analysis of the superconducting order parameter, the distribution of auxiliary fields and the quasiparticle density of states, we identify the regions of metallic, insulating, superconducting and pseudogapped behavior. Our finding of the importance of phase fluctuations for the pseudogap behavior is consistent with the conclusions drawn from recent experiments on NbN superconductors. The method can be generalized to study superconductors with non-trivial order parameter symmetries by identifying the relevant auxiliary variables.

The role of disorder symmetry in a dirty superconductor: a Bogoliubov-deGennes (BdG) study

We study the effect of disorder symmetry in a disordered s-wave superconductor. We begin with an attractive Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice in the presence of diagonal- and off-diagonal disorder. The model is studied numerically using Bogoliubov-deGennes mean-field approach. We find that the off-diagonal disorder is much more efficient in destroying superconducting order. A detailed analysis brings out very distinct qualitative pictures in the two cases: diagonal disorder leads to formation of small scale isolated superconducting islands separated by large region of normal metal, whereas off-diagonal disorder leads to a connected network of superconducting region. Naively, it seems that the connected network of superconducting regions should have a large average value for superconducting order parameter, but this does not hold true for large disorder, as we demonstrate explicitly. Our qualititive picture is supported by real-space data on local order parameters.

Magnetic properties of interacting, disordered electron systems in d=2 dimensions

We compute the magnetic susceptibilities of interacting electrons in the presence of disorder on a two-dimensional square lattice by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Clear evidence is found that at sufficiently low temperatures disorder can lead to an enhancement of the ferromagnetic susceptibility. We show that it is not related to the transition from a metal to an Anderson insulator in two dimensions, but is a rather general low temperature property of interacting, disordered electronic systems.

Interacting lattice electrons with disorder in two dimensions: Numerical evidence for a metal-insulator transition with a universal critical conductivity

The dc-conductivity of electrons on a square lattice interacting with a local repulsion in the presence of disorder is computed by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We provide evidence for the existence of a transition from an Anderson insulator to a correlated disordered metal with a universal value of the critical dc-conductivity σ_{dc,crit} = (1.18 \pm 0.06) e^{2}/h at the transition.
