Anomalous magnetic properties of quasi two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnet Fe4GeTe2

We have studied the magnetic properties of quasi two-dimensional itinerant ferromagnet Fe4_4GeTe2_2 as functions of temperature and magnetic field (BB) with field parallel to the abab-plane (B∥abB\|ab) and cc-axis (B∥cB\|c) of the crystal. This van der Waals compound undergoes a continuous paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition below TCT_C = 270.0 K and a pronounced spin reorientation transition at around TSRT_{SR} ∼\sim 115 K where the easy axis of magnetization changes its direction from in-plane to out-of-plane. The temperature evolution of magnetization in the FM state is highly anomalous and extremely sensitive to the direction and strength of applied magnetic field. Magnetic entropy change (ΔSMΔS_M) has been estimated in the vicinity of TCT_C and TSRT_{SR}. ΔSMΔS_M(TT) is found to be almost isotropic around TCT_C while it shows very unusual behavior and is sensitive to the direction of applied field at low temperature close to TSRT_{SR}. For B∥cB\|c, ΔSMΔS_M is negative and decreases continuously with field and -ΔSMΔS_M(TT) shows a broad maximum around TSRT_{SR} similar to that observe at TCT_C. On the other hand, ΔSMΔS_M is positive in the vicinity of TSRT_{SR} below 1.4 T and -ΔSMΔS_M(TT) exhibits a peak at TSRT_{SR} which becomes very sharp at high field for B∥abB\|ab. These results suggest complex nature of the magnetic ground state of Fe4_4GeTe2_2, which is possibly due to the presence of multiple inequivalent Fe sites, their ordering and complexity of spin configuration.

Weak antilocalization effect and triply degenerate state in Cu-doped CaAuAs

The effect of 50\% Cu doping at the Au site in the topological Dirac semimetal CaAuAs is investigated through electronic band structure calculations, electrical resistivity, and magnetotransport measurements. Electronic structure calculations a suggest broken-symmetry-driven topological phase transition from the Dirac to triple-point state in CaAuAs via alloy engineering. The electrical resistivity of both the CaAuAs and CaAu0.5_{0.5}Cu0.5_{0.5}As compounds shows metallic behavior. Nonsaturating quasilinear magnetoresistance (MR) behavior is observed in CaAuAs. On the other hand, MR of the doped compound shows a pronounced cusplike feature in the low-field regime. Such behavior of MR in CaAu0.5_{0.5}Cu0.5_{0.5}As is attributed to the weak antilocalization (WAL) effect. The WAL effect is analyzed using different theoretical models, including the semiclassical ∼B\sim\sqrt{B} one which accounts for the three-dimensional WAL and modified Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka model. Strong WAL effect is also observed in the longitudinal MR, which is well described by the generalized Altshuler-Aronov model. Our study suggests that the WAL effect originates from weak disorder and the spin-orbit coupled bulk state. Interestingly, we have also observed the signature of chiral anomaly in longitudinal MR, when both current and field are applied along the cc axis. The Hall resistivity measurements indicate that the charge conduction mechanism in these compounds is dominated by the holes with a concentration ∼\sim1020^{20} cm−3^{-3} and mobility ∼102\sim 10^2 cm2^2 V−1^{-1} S−1^{-1}.

Anomalous Hall effect in half-metallic Heusler compound Co2_{2}TiXX (XX=Si, Ge)

Though Weyl fermions have recently been observed in several materials with broken inversion symmetry, there are very few examples of such systems with broken time reversal symmetry. Various Co2_{2}-based half-metallic ferromagnetic Heusler compounds are lately predicted to host Weyl type excitations in their band structure. These magnetic Heusler compounds with broken time reversal symmetry are expected to show a large momentum space Berry curvature, which introduces several exotic magneto-transport properties. In this report, we present systematic analysis of experimental results on anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in Co2_2TiXX (XX=Si and Ge). This study is an attempt to understand the role of Berry curvature on AHE in Co2_2TiXX family of materials. The anomalous Hall resistivity is observed to scale quadratically with the longitudinal resistivity for both the compounds. The detailed analysis indicates that in anomalous Hall conductivity, the intrinsic Karplus-Luttinger Berry phase mechanism dominates over the extrinsic skew scattering and side-jump mechanism.

Tip-induced Superconductivity Coexisting with Preserved Topological Properties in Line-nodal Semimetal ZrSiS

ZrSiS was recently shown to be a new material with topologically non-trivial band structure which exhibits multiple Dirac nodes and a robust linear band dispersion up to an unusually high energy of 2\,eV. Such a robust linear dispersion makes the topological properties of ZrSiS insensitive to perturbations like carrier doping or lattice distortion. Here we show that a novel superconducting phase with a remarkably high TcT_c of 7.5\,K can be induced in single crystals of ZrSiS by a non-superconducting metallic tip of Ag. From first-principles calculations we show that the observed superconducting phase might originate from dramatic enhancement of density of states due to the presence of a metallic tip on ZrSiS. Our calculations also show that the emerging tip-induced superconducting phase co-exists with the well preserved topological properties of ZrSiS.

Correlation between battery material performance and cooperative electron-phonon interaction in LiCoy_yMn2−y_{2-y}O4_{4}

Understanding the basic physics related to archetypal lithium battery material (such as LiCoy_yMn2−y_{2-y}O4_{4}) is of considerable interest and is expected to aid designing of cathodes of high capacity. The relation between electrochemical performance, activated-transport parameters, thermal expansion, and cooperativity of electron-phonon-interaction distortions in LiCoy_yMn2−y_{2-y}O4_{4} is investigated. The first order cooperative-normal-mode transition, detected through coefficient of thermal expansion, is found to disappear at a critical doping (y∼0.16y \sim 0.16); interestingly, for y≳0.16y \gtrsim 0.16 the resistivity does not change much with doping and the electrochemical capacity becomes constant over repeated cycling. The critical doping y∼0.16y \sim 0.16 results in breakdown of the network of cooperative/coherent normal-mode distortions; this leads to vanishing of the first-order transition, establishment of hopping channels with lower resistance, and enhancing lithiation and delithiation of the battery, thereby minimizing electrochemical capacity fading.

Dielectric anomaly at T_N in LaMnO3

We observe a distinct anomaly in dielectric permittivity (epsilon') as well as relaxation time (tao_0) versus temperature (T) pattern at the antiferromagnetic transition point (T_N) in single crystal of LaMnO3. The equivalent circuit analysis of the impedance spectra across T_N reveals clear anomaly in the capacitive component C_0 at T_N. Since no structural transition takes place across T_N, the anomaly in tao_0 and C_0 at T_N possibly signifies multiferroicity stemming from coupling between orbital and spin order in LaMnO3.
