The $ν$ EYE Neutrino Telescope: Conceptual Design Report

The {$\bfνEYE$} (``new eye'', Neutrino Experiment at YEmilab, \href{https://sites.google.com/korea.ac.kr/the-nueye-telescope} {\tt nuEYE.korea.ac.kr}) neutrino project leverages the existing large pit at Yemilab located in South Korea, to reveal the existence of sterile neutrino, the up-turn of the neutrinos from the Sun, and the first minimum of the neutrino oscillation over distances on the order of tens of kilometers for the first time. This initiative is expected to facilitate a wide range of significant scientific and technological advancements within both South Korean and international communities engaged in neutrino science and technology. The {$\bfνEYE$} aims to investigate the largely unexplored sector of almost-massless lepton in the elementary particle physics in detail. The emphasis will be placed on the study of real time nuclear processes and reactions involving possible sterile neutrinos on timescales down to nanoseconds in ultra-high intense or radioactive neutrino beams for the first time in the world; the {$\bfνEYE$} looks at to-be universal oscillation (``up-turn'' in the electron neutrino survival probability) of neutrinos predicted by the three neutrino oscillation paradigm. This will confirm or deny our current understanding on the particle interactions of the lepton sector; and measurement of the first oscillation minimum between the first and second neutrinos in mass.

Non-Standard Interaction of atmospheric neutrino in future experiments

We show the prospects of probing neutral-current non-standard interaction (NSI) in the propagation of atmospheric neutrinos in future large-volume neutrino experiments including DUNE, HK, KNO, and ORCA. For DUNE, we utilize its ability of identifying the tau neutrino event and combine the $ν_τ$ appearance with the $ν_μ$ disappearance. Based on our simulated results, the ten years of data taking of the atmospheric neutrinos can enormously improve the bounds on the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{μτ}, | \varepsilon_{μμ} - \varepsilon_{ττ} |$, $\varepsilon_{e μ}$, $\varepsilon_{e τ}$ and $| \varepsilon_{μμ} - \varepsilon_{e e} |$ by a couple of orders of magnitudes. In addition, we show the expected correlations between the CP-violation phase $δ_{CP}$ and the NSI parameters $\varepsilon_{eμ}, \varepsilon_{eτ}$, and $|\varepsilon_{ee} - \varepsilon_{μμ}|$ and confirm the potentials of DUNE, HK, KNO (combined with HK) in excluding the "No CP violation" hypothesis at 1$σ$, 2$σ$, and 3$σ$, respectively.

Oscillation tomography of the Earth with solar neutrinos and future experiments

We study in details the Earth matter effects on the boron neutrinos from the Sun using recently developed 3D models of the Earth. The models have a number of new features of the density profiles, in particular, a substantial deviation from spherical symmetry. In this connection, we further elaborate on relevant aspects of oscillations ($ε^2$ corrections, adiabaticity violation, entanglement, {\it etc.}) and the attenuation effect. The night excesses of the $νe-$ and $νN-$ events and the Day-Night asymmetries, $A_{ND}$, are presented in terms of the matter potential and the generalized energy resolution functions. The energy dependences of the cross-section and the flux improve the resolution, and consequently, sensitivity to remote structures of the profiles. The nadir angle ($η$) dependences of $A_{ND}$ are computed for future detectors DUNE, THEIA, Hyper-Kamiokande, and MICA at the South pole. Perspectives of the oscillation tomography of the Earth with the boron neutrinos are discussed. Next-generation detectors will establish the integrated day-night asymmetry with high confidence level. They can give some indications of the $η-$ dependence of the effect, but will discriminate among different models at most at the $(1 - 2)σ$ level. For high-level discrimination, the MICA-scale experiments are needed. MICA can detect the ice-soil borders and perform unique tomography of Antarctica.

Sensitivities of future solar neutrino observatories to NSI

We study the matter effect caused by non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) in the future solar neutrino experiments, DUNE, HK and MICA. The upcoming reactor experiment, JUNO is expected to provide the most precise measurements of solar neutrino oscillation parameters and is going to open up the era of sub-percent precision in the leptonic mixing sector of the Standard Model (SM). Considering JUNO can measure $Δm ^2 _{21}$ and $θ_{12}$ by sub-percent precision and assuming SM as the null hypothesis, we study the possibility to constrain NSI parameters by the future solar neutrino experiments such as DUNE, HK and MICA. For this purpose, we study the effect of NSI on solar neutrino propagation in the Sun and Earth and explore the dependence of the day-night asymmetry on the NSI parameters. We also study the effect of NSI at the water Cerenkov detector on the simulated data for these experiments.

Using strong intense lasers to probe sterile neutrinos

A linearly polarized laser beam acquires its circular polarization by interacting with a neutrino beam for the reason that the gauge-couplings of left-handed neutrinos are parity-violated. Based on this phenomena, we study the oscillations of active and sterile neutrinos in short baseline neutrino experiments. Using the total fluxes of active and sterile neutrinos in the $3+1$ framework, we show that the rate of generating circular polarization oscillates as a function of the distance $L$ neutrinos propagating from the source to the detector. By measuring such oscillation, one can possibly determine the mixing amplitudes of active and sterile neutrinos and their squared-mass difference.

Revisiting the quantum decoherence scenario as an explanation for the LSND anomaly

We propose an explanation for the LSND anomaly based on quantum decoherence, postulating an exponential behavior for the decoherence parameters as a function of the neutrino energy. Within this ansatz decoherence effects are suppressed for neutrino energies above 200 MeV as well as around and below few MeV, restricting deviations from standard three-flavour oscillations only to the LSND energy range of 20--50 MeV. The scenario is consistent with the global data on neutrino oscillations, alleviates the tension between LSND and KARMEN, and predicts a null-result for MiniBooNE. No sterile neutrinos are introduced, conflict with cosmology is avoided, and no tension between short-baseline appearance and disappearance data arises. The proposal can be tested at planned reactor experiments with baselines of around 50 km, such as JUNO or RENO-50.

Shedding light on LMA-Dark solar neutrino solution by medium baseline reactor experiments: JUNO and RENO-50

In the presence of Non-Standard neutral current Interactions (NSI) a new solution to solar neutrino anomaly with $\cos 2θ_{12}<0$ appears. We investigate how this solution can be tested by upcoming intermediate baseline reactor experiments, JUNO and RENO-50. We point out a degeneracy between the two solutions when both hierarchy and the $θ_{12}$ octant are flipped. We then comment on how this degeneracy can be partially lifted by long baseline experiments sensitive to matter effects such as the NOvA experiment.

Constraining Super-light Sterile Neutrino Scenario by JUNO and RENO-50

The Super-light Sterile Neutrino Scenario (SSNS) has been proposed in the literature to explain the suppression of the upturn in the low energy solar data. In this scenario, the mass splitting between the new mass eigenstate, $ν_0$ and the standard $ν_1$ is of order of $Δm_{01}^2\sim 10^{-5}$ eV$^2$. Reactor neutrino experiments with baseline larger than $\sim$20 km can help us to probe this scenario. We study the potential of upcoming JUNO and RENO-50 reactor experiments for discovering the superlight sterile neutrino or constraining its mixing parameters. We study the dependence of sensitivity to the SNSS and find that the proposed JUNO setup is very close to the optimal setup for probing the SSNS.

Measuring Dirac CP-violating phase with intermediate energy beta beam facility

Taking the established nonzero value of $θ_{13}$, we study the possibility of extracting the Dirac CP-violating phase by a beta beam facility with a boost factor $100<γ<450$. We compare the performance of different setups with different baselines, boost factors and detector technologies. We find that an antineutrino beam from $^6$He decay with a baseline of $L=1300$ km has a very promising CP discovery potential using a 500 kton Water Cherenkov (WC) detector. Fortunately this baseline corresponds to the distance between FermiLAB to Sanford underground research facility in South Dakota.
