Topological Multipartite Entanglement in a Fermi Liquid

We show that the topology of the Fermi sea of a $D$-dimensional Fermi gas is reflected in the multipartite entanglement characterizing $D+1$ regions that meet at a point. For odd $D$ we introduce the multipartite mutual information, and show that it exhibits a $\log^D L$ divergence as a function of system size $L$ with a universal coefficient that is proportional to the Euler characteristic $χ_F$ of the Fermi sea. This provides a generalization, for a Fermi gas, of the well-known result for $D=1$ that expresses the $\log L$ divergence of the bipartite entanglement entropy in terms of the central charge $c$ characterizing a conformal field theory. For even $D$ we introduce a charge-weighted entanglement entropy that is manifestly odd under a particle-hole transformation. We show that the corresponding charge-weighted mutual information exhibits a similar $\log^D L$ divergence proportional to $χ_F$. Our analysis relates the universal behavior of the multipartite mutual information in the absence of interactions to the $D+1$'th order equal-time density correlation function, which we show exhibits a universal behavior in the long wavelength limit proportional to $χ_F$. Our analytic results are based on the replica method. In addition we perform a numerical study of the charge-weighted mutual information for $D=2$ that confirms several aspects of the analytic theory. Finally, we consider the effect of interactions perturbatively within the replica theory. We show that for $D=3$ the $\log^3 L$ divergence of the topological mutual information is not perturbed by weak short-ranged interactions, though for $D=2$ the charge-weighted mutual information is perturbed. Thus, for $D=3$ the multipartite mutual information provides a robust classification that distinguishes distinct topological Fermi liquid phases.

Translation symmetry-enriched toric code insulator

We introduce a two-dimensional electronic insulator that possesses a toric code topological order enriched by translation symmetry. This state can be realized from disordering a weak topological superconductor by double-vortex condensation. It is termed the toric code insulator, whose anyonic excitations consist of a charge-$e$ chargon, a neutral fermion and two types of visons. There are two types of visons because they have constrained motion as a consequence of the fractional Josephson effect of one-dimensional topological superconductor. Importantly, these two types of visons are related by a discrete translation symmetry and have a mutual semionic braiding statistics, leading to a symmetry-enrichment akin to the type in Wen's plaquette model and Kitaev's honeycomb model. We construct this state using a three-fluid coupled-wire model, and analyze the anyon spectrum and braiding statistics in detail to unveil the nature of symmetry-enrichment due to translation. We also discuss potential material realizations and present a band-theoretic understanding of the state, fitting it into a general framework for studying fractionalizaton in strongly-interacting weak topological phases.

Non-diagonal anisotropic quantum Hall states

We propose a family of Abelian quantum Hall states termed the non-diagonal states, which arise at filling factors $ν=p/2q$ for bosonic systems and $ν=p/(p+2q)$ for fermionic systems, with $p$ and $q$ being two coprime integers. Non-diagonal quantum Hall states are constructed in a coupled wire model, which shows an intimate relation to the non-diagonal conformal field theory and has a constrained pattern of motion for bulk quasiparticles, featuring a non-trivial interplay between charge symmetry and translation symmetry. The non-diagonal state is established as a distinctive symmetry-enriched topological order. Aside from the usual $U(1)$ charge sector, there is an additional symmetry-enriched neutral sector described by the quantum double model $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, which relies on the presence of both the $U(1)$ charge symmetry and the $\mathbb{Z}$ translation symmetry of the wire model. Translation symmetry distinguishes non-diagonal states from Laughlin states, in a way similar to how it distinguishes weak topological insulators from trivial band insulators. Moreover, the translation symmetry in non-diagonal states can be associated to the $\mathbf{e}\leftrightarrow\mathbf{m}$ anyonic symmetry in $\mathcal{D}(\mathbb{Z}_p)$, implying the role of dislocations as two-fold twist-defects. The boundary theory of non-diagonal states is derived microscopically. For the edge perpendicular to the direction of wires, the effective Hamiltonian has two components: a chiral Luttinger liquid and a generalized $p$-state clock model. Importantly, translation symmetry in the bulk is realized as self-duality on the edge. The symmetric edge is thus either gapless or gapped with spontaneously broken symmetry. For $p=2,3$, the respective electron tunneling exponents are predicted for experimental probes.

Local Probes for Quantum Hall Ferroelectrics and Nematics

Two-dimensional multi-valley electronic systems in which the dispersion of individual pockets has low symmetry give rise to quantum Hall ferroelectric and nematic states in the presence of strong quantising magnetic fields. We investigate local signatures of these states arising near impurities that can be probed via Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy (STM) spectroscopy. For quantum Hall ferroelectrics, we demonstrate a direct relation between the dipole moment measured at impurity bound states and the ideal bulk dipole moment obtained from the modern theory of polarisation. We also study the many-body problem with a single impurity via exact diagonalization and find that near strong impurities non-trivial excitonic state can form with specific features that can be easily identified via STM spectroscopy.

Coupled Wire Model of $Z_2 \times Z_2$ Orbifold Quantum Hall States

We construct a coupled wire model for a sequence of non-Abelian quantum Hall states occurring at filling factors $ν=2/(2M+q)$ with integers $M$ and even(odd) integers $q$ for fermionic(bosonic) states. They are termed $Z_2 \times Z_2$ orbifold states, which have a topological order with a neutral sector described by the $c=1$ orbifold conformal field theory (CFT) at radius $R_{\rm orbifold}=\sqrt{p/2}$ with even integers $p$. When $p=2$, the state can be viewed as two decoupled layers of Moore-Read (MR) state, whose neutral sector is described by the Ising $\times$ Ising CFT and contains a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ fusion subalgebra. We demonstrate that orbifold states with $p>2$, also containing a $Z_2 \times Z_2$ fusion algebra, can be obtained by coupling together an array of MR $\times$ MR wires through local interactions. The corresponding charge spectrum of quasiparticles is also examined. The orbifold states constructed here are complementary to the $Z_4$ orbifold states, whose neutral edge theory is described by orbifold CFT with odd integer $p$ and contains a $Z_4$ fusion algebra.

Restoration of tetragonal $C_4$ symmetry coexistent with filamentary superconductivity in the pressure induced intermediate phase in the iron-based superconductor Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

The hole doped Fe-based superconductors Ba$_{1-x}$A$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ (where A=Na or K) show a particular rich phase diagram. It was observed that an intermediate re-entrant tetragonal phase forms within the orthorhombic antiferromagnetically-ordered stripe-type spin density wave state above the superconducting transition [S. Avci et al., Nature Comm. 5, 3845 (2014), A. E. Böhmer et al., arXiv:1412.7038v2]. A similar intermediate phase was reported to appear if pressure is applied to underdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ [E. Hassinger et al., Phys. Rev. B 86, 140502(R) (2012)]. Here we report data of the electric resistivity, Hall effect, specific heat, and the thermoelectrical Nernst and Seebeck coefficients measured on a Ba$_{0.85}$K$_{0.15}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystal under pressure up to 5.5 GPa. The data reveals a coexistence of the intermediate phase with filamentary superconductivity. The Nernst coefficient shows a large signature of nematic order that coincides with the stripe-type spin density wave state up to optimal pressure. In the pressure-induced intermediate phase the nematic order is removed, thus confirming that its nature is a re-entrant tetragonal phase.
