Compact quantum group structures on type-I $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras

We prove a number of results having to do with equipping type-I $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras with compact quantum group structures, the two main ones being that such a compact quantum group is necessarily co-amenable, and that if the $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra in question is an extension of a non-zero finite direct sum of elementary $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras by a commutative unital $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebra then it must be finite-dimensional.

The quantum disk is not a quantum group

We show that the quantum disk, i.e. the quantum space corresponding to the Toeplitz C*-algebra does not admit any compact quantum group structure. We prove that if such a structure existed the resulting compact quantum group would simultaneously be of Kac type and not of Kac type. The main tools used in the solution come from the theory of type I locally compact quantum groups, but also from the theory of operators on Hilbert spaces.

Induction for locally compact quantum groups revisited

In this paper we revisit the theory of induced representations in the setting of locally compact quantum groups. In the case of induction from open quantum subgroups, we show that constructions of Kustermans and Vaes are equivalent to the classical, and much simpler, construction of Rieffel. We also prove in general setting the continuity of induction in the sense of Vaes with respect to weak containment.

Integrable actions and quantum subgroups

We study homomorphisms of locally compact quantum groups from the point of view of integrability of the associated action. For a given homomorphism of quantum groups $Π\colon\mathbb{H}\to\mathbb{G}$ we introduce quantum groups $\mathbb{H}/\!\kerΠ$ and $\overline{\mathrm{im}\,Π}$ corresponding to the classical quotient by kernel and closure of image. We show that if the action of $\mathbb{H}$ on $\mathbb{G}$ associated to $Π$ is integrable then $\mathbb{H}/\!\kerΠ\cong\overline{\mathrm{im}\,Π}$ and characterize such $Π$. As a particular case we consider an injective continuous homomorphism $Π\colon{H}\to{G}$ between locally compact groups $H$ and $G$. Then $Π$ yields an integrable action of $H$ on $L^\infty\;\!\!(G)$ if and only if its image is closed and $Π$ is a homeomorphism of $H$ onto $\mathrm{im}\,Π$. We also give characterizations of open quantum subgroups and of compact quantum subgroups in terms of integrability and show that a closed quantum subgroup always gives rise to an integrable action. Moreover we prove that quantum subgroups closed in the sense of Woronowicz whose associated homomorphism of quantum groups yields an integrable action are closed in the sense of Vaes.

The canonical central exact sequence for locally compact quantum groups

For a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb{G}$ we define its center, $\mathscr{Z}(\mathbb{G})$, and its quantum group of inner automorphisms, $\mathrm{Inn}(\mathbb{G})$. We show that one obtains a natural isomorphism between $\mathrm{Inn}(\mathbb{G})$ and $\mathbb{G}/\!\mathscr{Z}(\mathbb{G})$, we characterize normal quantum subgroups of a compact quantum group as those left invariant by the action of the quantum group of inner automorphisms and discuss several examples.

Quantum automorphism groups of finite quantum groups are classical

In a recent paper of Bhowmick, Skalski and Sołtan the notion of a quantum group of automorphisms of a finite quantum group was introduced and, for a given finite quantum group G, existence of the universal quantum group acting on G by automorphisms was proved. We show that this universal quantum group is in fact a classical group. The key ingredient of the proof is the use of multiplicative unitary operators, and we include a thorough discussion of this notion in the context of finite quantum groups.

Quantum groups with projection on von Neumann algebra level

We introduce an axiomatization of the notion of a semidirect product of locally compact quantum groups and study properties. Our approach is slightly different from the one introduced in the thesis of S.~Roy and, unlike the investigations of Roy, we work within the von Neumann algebraic picture. This allows the use of powerful techniques related to crossed products by actions of locally compact quantum groups. In particular we show existence of a "braided comultiplication" on the algebra spanned by slices of "braided multiplicative unitary".

Embeddable Quantum Homogeneous Spaces

We discuss various notions generalizing the concept of a homogeneous space to the setting of locally compact quantum groups. On the von Neumann algebra level we find an interesting duality for such objects. A definition of a quantum homogeneous space is proposed along the lines of the pioneering work of Vaes on induction and imprimitivity for locally compact quantum groups. The concept of an embeddable quantum homogeneous space is selected and discussed in detail as it seems to be the natural candidate for the quantum analog of classical homogeneous spaces. Among various examples we single out the quantum analog of the quotient of the Cartesian product of a quantum group with itself by the diagonal subgroup, analogs of quotients by compact subgroups as well as quantum analogs of trivial principal bundles.

Projective limits of quantum symmetry groups and the doubling construction for Hopf algebras

The quantum symmetry group of the inductive limit of C*-algebras equipped with orthogonal filtrations is shown to be the projective limit of the quantum symmetry groups of the C*-algebras appearing in the sequence. Some explicit examples of such projective limits are studied, including the case of quantum symmetry groups of the duals of finite symmetric groups, which do not fit directly into the framework of the main theorem and require further specific study. The investigations reveal a deep connection between quantum symmetry groups of discrete group duals and the doubling construction for Hopf algebras.

Closed quantum subgroups of locally compact quantum groups

We investigate the fundamental concept of a closed quantum subgroup of a locally compact quantum group. Two definitions - one due to S.Vaes and one due to S.L.Woronowicz - are analyzed and relations between them discussed. Among many reformulations we prove that the former definition can be phrased in terms of quasi-equivalence of representations of quantum groups while the latter can be related to an old definition of Podleś from the theory of compact quantum groups. The cases of classical groups, duals of classical groups, compact and discrete quantum groups are singled out and equivalence of the two definitions is proved in the relevant context. A deep relationship with the quantum group generalization of Herz restriction theorem from classical harmonic analysis is also established, in particular, in the course of our analysis we give a new proof of Herz restriction theorem.

Quantum families of maps

In this survey article we give basic introduction to the theory of quantum families of maps. We begin with a general look at non-commutative (or "quantum") topology. Then we formulate all our results in this language. Existence of quantum families possessing special properties is discussed and we show that these quantum spaces are canonically endowed with quantum semigroup structures. Classical analogy is emphasized at each step and many examples are described.

Examples of non-compact quantum group actions

We present two examples of actions of non-regular locally compact quantum groups on their homogeneous spaces. The homogeneous spaces are defined in a way specific to these examples, but the definitions we use have the advantage of being expressed in purely $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic language. We also discuss continuity of the obtained actions. Finally we describe in detail a general construction of quantum homogeneous spaces obtained as quotients by compact quantum subgroups.

On actions of compact quantum groups

We compare algebraic objects related to a compact quantum group action on a unital C*-algebra in the sense of Podleś and Baum et al. and show that they differ by the kernel of the morphism describing the action. Then we address ways to remove the kernel without changing the Podleś algebraic core. A minimal such procedure is described. We end the paper with a natural example of an action of a reduced compact quantum group with non-trivial kernel.

Property (T) and exotic quantum group norms

Utilizing the notion of property (T) we construct new examples of quantum group norms on the polynomial algebra of a compact quantum group, and provide criteria ensuring that these are not equal to neither the minimal nor the maximal norm. Along the way we generalize several classical operator algebraic characterizations of property (T) to the quantum group setting which unify recent approaches to property (T) for quantum groups with previous ones. The techniques developed furthermore provide tools to answer two open problems; firstly a question by Bédos, Murphy and Tuset about automatic continuity of the comultiplication and secondly a problem left open by Woronowicz regarding the structure of elements whose coproduct is a finite sum of simple tensors.

When is a quantum space not a group?

We give a survey of techniques from quantum group theory which can be used to show that some quantum spaces (objects of the category dual to the category of $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras) do not admit any quantum group structure. We also provide a number of examples which include some very well known quantum spaces. Our tools include several purely quantum group theoretical results as well as study of existence of characters and traces on $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras describing the considered quantum spaces as well as properties such as nuclearity.

From multiplicative unitaries to quantum groups II

It is shown that all important features of a $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebraic quantum group $(A,Δ)$ defined by a modular multiplicative $W$ depend only on the pair $(A,Δ)$ rather than the multiplicative unitary operator $W$. The proof is based on thorough study of representations of quantum groups. As an application we present a construction and study properties of the universal dual of a quantum group defined by a modular multiplicative unitary - without assuming existence of Haar weights.
