Lipschitz mappings, metric differentiability, and factorization through metric trees

Given a Lipschitz map $f$ from a cube into a metric space, we find several equivalent conditions for $f$ to have a Lipschitz factorization through a metric tree. As an application we prove a recent conjecture of David and Schul. The techniques developed for the proof of the factorization result yield several other new and seemingly unrelated results. We prove that if $f$ is a Lipschitz mapping from an open set in $\mathbb{R}^n$ onto a metric space $X$, then the topological dimension of $X$ equals $n$ if and only if $X$ has positive $n$-dimensional Hausdorff measure. We also prove an area formula for length-preserving maps between metric spaces, which gives, in particular, a new formula for integration on countably rectifiable sets in the Heisenberg group.

The Coarea Inequality

The aim of this paper is to provide a self-contained proof of a general case of the coarea inequality, also known as the Eilenberg inequality. The result is known, but we are not aware of any place that a proof would be written with all details. The known proof is based on a difficult result of Davies. Our proof is elementary and does not use Davies' theorem. Instead we use an elegant argument that we learned from Nazarov through MathOverflow. We also obtain some generalizations of the coarea inequality.

A new characterization of the mappings of bounded length distortion

In this paper, we present a new characterization of the mappings of bounded length distortion (BLD for short). In the original geometric definition it is assumed that a BLD mapping is open, discrete and sense preserving. We prove that the first two of the three conditions are redundant and the sense-preserving condition can be replaced by a weaker assumption that the Jacobian is non-negative.

The Dubovitski\uı-Sard Theorem in Sobolev Spaces

The Sard theorem from 1942 requires that a mapping $f:\mathbb{R}^n \to \mathbb{R}^m$ is of class $C^k$, $k > \max (n-m,0)$. In 1957 Duvovitski\uı generalized Sard's theorem to the case of $C^k$ mappings for all $k$. Namely he proved that, for almost all $y\in \mathbb{R}^m$, $\mathcal{H}^{\ell}(C_f \cap f^{-1}(y))=0$ where $\ell = \max(n-m-k+1,0)$, ${\mathcal H}^{\ell}$ denotes the Hausdorff measure, and $C_f$ is the set of critical points of $f$. In 2001 De Pascale proved that the Sard theorem holds true for Sobolev mappings of the class $W_{\rm loc}^{k,p}(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{R}^m)$, $k>\max(n-m,0)$ and $p>n$. We will show that also Dubovitski\uı's theorem can be generalized to the case of $W_{\rm loc}^{k,p}(\mathbb{R}^n,\mathbb{R}^m)$ mappings for all $k\in\mathbb{N}$ and $p>n$.

On conditions for unrectifiability of a metric space

We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a Lipschitz map $f:\mathbb{R}E\to X$, into a metric space to have the image with the $k$-dimensional Hausdorff measure equal zero, $H^k(f(E))=0$. An interesting feature of our approach is that despite the fact that we are dealing with arbitrary metric spaces, we employ a variant of the classical implicit function theorem. Applications include pure unrectifiability of the Heisenberg groups and that of more general Carnot-Carathéodory spaces.

Weak contact equations for mappings into Heisenberg groups

Let k>n be positive integers. We consider mappings from a subset of k-dimensional Euclidean space R^k to the Heisenberg group H^n with a variety of metric properties, each of which imply that the mapping in question satisfies some weak form of the contact equation arising from the sub-Riemannian structure of the Heisenberg group. We illustrate a new geometric technique that shows directly how the weak contact equation greatly restricts the behavior of the mappings. In particular, we provide a new and elementary proof of the fact that the Heisenberg group H^n is purely k-unrectifiable. We also prove that for an open set U in R^k, the rank of the weak derivative of a weakly contact mapping in the Sobolev space W^{1,1}_{loc}(U;R^{2n+1}) is bounded by $n$ almost everywhere, answering a question of Magnani. Finally we prove that if a mapping from U to H^n is s-Hölder continuous, s>1/2, and locally Lipschitz when considered as a mapping into R^{2n+1}, then the mapping cannot be injective. This result is related to a conjecture of Gromov.
