Model selection in the space of Gaussian models invariant by symmetry

We consider multivariate centered Gaussian models for the random variable $Z=(Z_1,\ldots, Z_p)$, invariant under the action of a subgroup of the group of permutations on $\{1,\ldots, p\}$. Using the representation theory of the symmetric group on the field of reals, we derive the distribution of the maximum likelihood estimate of the covariance parameter $Σ$ and also the analytic expression of the normalizing constant of the Diaconis-Ylvisaker conjugate prior for the precision parameter $K=Σ^{-1}$. We can thus perform Bayesian model selection in the class of complete Gaussian models invariant by the action of a subgroup of the symmetric group, which we could also call complete RCOP models. We illustrate our results with a toy example of dimension $4$ and several examples for selection within cyclic groups, including a high dimensional example with $p=100$.

Pattern recovery and signal denoising by SLOPE when the design matrix is orthogonal

Sorted $\ell_1$ Penalized Estimator (SLOPE) is a relatively new convex regularization method for fitting high-dimensional regression models. SLOPE allows to reduce the model dimension by shrinking some estimates of the regression coefficients completely to zero or by equating the absolute values of some nonzero estimates of these coefficients. This allows to identify situations where some of~true regression coefficients are equal. In this article we will introduce the SLOPE pattern, i.e., the set of relations between the true regression coefficients, which can be identified by SLOPE. We will also present new results on the strong consistency of SLOPE estimators and on~the~strong consistency of pattern recovery by~SLOPE when the design matrix is orthogonal and illustrate advantages of~the~SLOPE clustering in the context of high frequency signal denoising.

Nonresonant amplification of coherent spin waves through voltage-induced interface magnetoelectric effect and spin-transfer torque

We present new mechanism for manipulation of the spin-wave amplitude through the use of the dynamic charge-mediated magnetoelectric effect in ultrathin multilayers composed of dielectric thin-film capacitors separated by a ferromagnetic bilayer. Propagating spin waves can be amplified and attenuated with rising and decreasing slopes of the oscillating voltage, respectively, locally applied to the sample. The way the spin accumulation is generated makes the interaction of the spin-transfer torque with the magnetization dynamics mode-selective and restricted to some range of spin-wave frequencies, which is in contrary to known types of the spin-transfer torque effects. The interfacial nature of spin-dependent screening allows to reduce the thickness of the fixed magnetization layer to a few nanometers, thus the proposed effect significantly contributes toward realization of the magnonic devices and also miniaturization of the spintronic devices.

Wigner and Wishart Ensembles for graphical models

Vinberg cones and the ambient vector spaces are important in modern statistics of sparse models and of graphical models. The aim of this paper is to study eigenvalue distributions of Gaussian, Wigner and covariance matrices related to growing Vinberg matrices, corresponding to growing daisy graphs. For Gaussian or Wigner ensembles, we give an explicit formula for the limiting distribution. For Wishart ensembles defined naturally on Vinberg cones, their limiting Stieltjes transforms, support and atom at 0 are described explicitly in terms of the Lambert-Tsallis functions, which are defined by using the Tsallis $q$-exponential functions.

Experimental Evidence of Non-Negligible Imaginary Part of Spin Mixing Conductance and Its Impact on Magnetization Dynamics in Heavy-Metal|Ferromagnet Bilayers

The paper concerns experimental verification of the magnitude of imaginary part of spin mixing conductance in bilayers comprising heavy metals. We present results of broadband ferromagnetic resonance studies on heterostructures consisting of Finemet thin films covered by Pt and Ta wedge layers with the aim to observe spin pumping effects and to evaluate both the real and imaginary parts of the spin mixing conductance. The experimental results are analyzed in the framework of a recent microscopic theory which allows us to estimate the value of the interfacial spin-orbit interaction and confirm its important role. In particular, we show that the imaginary part of spin mixing conductance cannot be regarded as negligible and we discuss its influence on magnetization dynamics. For Finemet|Ta bilayers, the ratio $\mathrm{Re}[g_{eff}^{\uparrow\downarrow}]/\mathrm{Im}[g_{eff}^{\uparrow\downarrow}]=$ 0.38, that is, the field-like torque dominates over the damping-like torque in such system. Consequently, relatively small enhancement of precession damping with respect to significant total torque exerted on the magnetization in Finemet|Ta system offers an attractive perspective for an application in the next-generation magnetic random-access memory cells.

Inversion, duality and Doob $h$-transforms for self-similar Markov processes

We show that any $\mathbb{R}^d\setminus\{0\}$-valued self-similar Markov process $X$, with index $α>0$ can be represented as a path transformation of some Markov additive process (MAP) $(θ,ξ)$ in $S_{d-1}\times\mathbb{R}$. This result extends the well known Lamperti transformation. Let us denote by $\widehat{X}$ the self-similar Markov process which is obtained from the MAP $(θ,-ξ)$ through this extended Lamperti transformation. Then we prove that $\widehat{X}$ is in weak duality with $X$, with respect to the measure $π(x/\|x\|)\|x\|^{α-d}dx$, if and only if $(θ,ξ)$ is reversible with respect to the measure $π(ds)dx$, where $π(ds)$ is some $σ$-finite measure on $S_{d-1}$ and $dx$ is the Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{R}$. Besides, the dual process $\widehat{X}$ has the same law as the inversion $(X_{γ_t}/\|X_{γ_t}\|^2,t\ge0)$ of $X$, where $γ_t$ is the inverse of $t\mapsto\int_0^t\|X\|_s^{-2α}\,ds$. These results allow us to obtain excessive functions for some classes of self-similar Markov processes such as stable Lévy processes.

On the Green function and Poisson integrals of the Dunkl Laplacian

We prove the existence and study properties of the Green function of the unit ball for the Dunkl Laplacian $Δ_k$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. As applications we derive the Poisson-Jensen formula for $Δ_k$-subharmonic functions and Hardy-Stein identities for the Poisson integrals of $Δ_k$. We also obtain sharp estimates of the Newton potential kernel, Green function and Poisson kernel in the rank one case in $\mathbb{R}^d$. These estimates contrast sharply with the well-known results in the potential theory of the classical Laplacian.

Wallach sets and squared Bessel particle systems

We determine the classical and the non-central Wallach sets $W_0$ and $W$ by classical probabilistic methods. We prove the Mayerhofer conjecture on $W$. We exploit the fact that $(x_0,β)\in W$ if and only if $x_0$ is the starting point and $2β$ is the drift of a squared Bessel matrix process $X_t$ on the cone $\bar{Sym^+(\mathbf{R},p)}$. Our methods are based on the study of SDEs for the symmetric polynomials of $X_t$ and for the eigenvalues of $X_t$, i.e. the squared Bessel particle systems.

Fisher Information and Exponential Families Parametrized by a Segment of Means

We consider natural and general exponential families $(Q_m)_{m\in M}$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ parametrized by the means. We study the submodels $(Q_{θm_1+(1-θ)m_2})_{θ\in[0,1]}$ parametrized by a segment in the means domain, mainly from the point of view of the Fisher information. Such a parametrization allows for a parsimonious model and is particularly useful in practical situations when hesitating between two parameters $m_1$ and $m_2$. The most interesting examples are obtained when $\mathbb{R}^d$ is a linear space of matrices, in particular for Gaussian and Wishart models.

Strong solutions of non-colliding particle systems

We study systems of stochastic differential equations describing positions x_1,x_2,...,x_p of p ordered particles, with inter-particles repulsions of the form H_{ij}(x_i,x_j)/(x_i-x_j). We show the existence of strong and pathwise unique non-colliding solutions of the system with a colliding initial point x_1(0)\leq ...\leq x_p(0) in the whole generality, under natural assumptions on the coefficients of the equations.

On the product formula on non-compact Grassmannians

We study the absolute continuity of the convolution $δ_{e^X}^\natural \star δ_{e^Y}^\natural$ of two orbital measures on the symmetric space $SO_0(p,q)/SO(p)\timesSO(q)$, $q>p$. We prove sharp conditions on $X$, $Y\in\a$ for the existence of the density of the convolution measure. This measure intervenes in the product formula for the spherical functions. We show that the sharp criterion developed for $\SO_0(p,q)/\SO(p)\times\SO(q)$ will also serve for the spaces $SU(p,q)/S(U(p)\timesU(q))$ and $Sp(p,q)/Sp(p)\timesSp(q)$, $q>p$. We also apply our results to the study of absolute continuity of convolution powers of an orbital measure $δ_{e^X}^\natural$.

Hitting half-spaces or spheres by the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type diffusions

The purpose of the paper is to provide a general method for computing hitting distributions of some regular subsets D for Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type operators of the form 1/2Δ+ F\cdot\nabla, with F bounded and orthogonal to the boundary of D. As an important application we obtain integral representations of the Poisson kernel for a half-space and balls for hyperbolic Brownian motion and for the classical Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. The method developed in the paper is based on stochastic calculus and on skew product representation of multidimensional Brownian motion and yields more complete results as those based on Feynmann-Kac technique.

On exit time of stable processes

We study the exit time $τ=τ_{(0,\infty)}$ for 1-dimensional strictly stable processes and express its Laplace transform at $t^α$ as the Laplace transform of a positive random variable with explicit density. Consequently, $τ$ satisfies some multiplicative convolution relations. For some stable processes, e.g. for the symmetric $\frac23$-stable process, explicit formulas for the Laplace transform and the density of $τ$ are obtained as an application.

Riesz measures and Wishart laws associated to quadratic maps

We introduce a natural definition of Riesz measures and Wishart laws associated to an $Ω$-positive (virtual) quadratic map, where $Ω\subset \real^n$ is a regular open convex cone. We give a general formula for moments of the Wishart laws. Moreover, if the quadratic map has an equivariance property under the action of a linear group acting on the cone $Ω$ transitively, then the associated Riesz measure and Wishart law are described explicitly by making use of theory of relatively invariant distributions on homogeneous cones.
