LSLS-category of moment-angle manifolds and higher order Massey products

Using the combinatorics of the underlying simplicial complex KK, we give various upper and lower bounds for the Lusternik-Schnirelmann (LS) category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$. We describe families of simplicial complexes and combinatorial operations which allow for a systematic description of the LS category. In particular, we characterise the LS category of moment-angle complexes $\zk$ over triangulated dd-manifolds KK for d≤2d\leq 2, as well as higher dimension spheres built up via connected sum, join, and vertex doubling operations. %This characterisation is given in terms of the combinatorics of KK, the cup product length of $H^*(\zk)$, as well as a certain Massey products. We show that the LS category closely relates to vanishing of Massey products in $H^*(\zk)$ and through this connection we describe first structural properties of Massey products in moment-angel manifolds. Some of further applications include calculations of the LS category and the description of conditions for vanishing of Massey products for moment-angle manifolds over fullerenes, Pogorelov polytopes and kk-neighbourly complexes, which double as important examples of hyperbolic manifolds.

The Free Loop Space Homology of (n−1)(n-1)-connected 2n2n-manifolds

Our goal in this paper is to compute the integral free loop space homology of (n−1)(n-1)-connected 2n2n-manifolds MM, n≥2n\geq 2. We do this when n≠2,4,8n\neq 2,4,8, or when n≠2n\neq 2 and H~∗(M)\tilde H^*(M) has trivial cup product squares, though the techniques used here should extend to a much wider range of manifolds. We also give partial information concerning the action of the Batalin-Vilkovisky operator.

The Homotopy Type of a Poincaré Duality Complex after Looping

We answer a weaker version of the classification problem for the homotopy types of (n−2)(n-2)-connected closed orientable (2n−1)(2n-1)-manifolds. Let n≥6n\geq 6 be an even integer, and XX be a (n−2)(n-2)-connected finite orientable Poincaré (2n−1)(2n-1)-complex such that Hn−1(X;Q)=0H^{n-1}(X;\mathbb{Q})=0 and Hn−1(X;Z2)=0H^{n-1}(X;\mathbb{Z}_2)=0. Then its loop space homotopy type is uniquely determined by the action of higher Bockstein operations on Hn−1(X;Zp)H^{n-1}(X;\mathbb{Z}_p) for each odd prime pp. A stronger result is obtained when localized at odd primes.

The Loop Space Homotopy Type of Simply-connected Four-manifolds and their Generalizations

We determine loop space decompositions of simply-connected four-manifolds, (n−1)(n-1)-connected 2n2n-dimensional manifolds provided n∉{4,8}n\notin\{4,8\}, and connected sums of products of two spheres. These are obtained as special cases of a more general loop space decomposition of certain torsion-free CWCW-complexes with well-behaved skeleta and some Poincaré duality features.

Modular representations and the homotopy of low rank pp-local CWCW-complexes

Fix an odd prime pp and let XX be the pp-localization of a finite suspended CWCW-complex. Given certain conditions on the reduced mod-pp homology $\bar H_*(X;\zmodp)$ of XX, we use a decomposition of ΩΣXΩΣX due to the second author and computations in modular representation theory to show there are arbitrarily large integers ii such that ΩΣiXΩΣ^i X is a homotopy retract of ΩΣXΩΣX. This implies the stable homotopy groups of ΣXΣX are in a certain sense retracts of the unstable homotopy groups, and by a result of Stanley, one can confirm the Moore conjecture for ΣXΣX. Under additional assumptions on $\bar H_*(X;\zmodp)$, we generalize a result of Cohen and Neisendorfer to produce a homotopy decomposition of ΩΣXΩΣX that has infinitely many finite HH-spaces as factors.

Homotopy Decompositions of Looped Stiefel manifolds, and their Exponents

Let pp be an odd prime, and fix integers mm and nn such that 0<m<n≤(p−1)(p−2)0<m<n\leq (p-1)(p-2). We give a pp-local homotopy decomposition for the loop space of the complex Stiefel manifold Wn,mW_{n,m}. Similar decompositions are given for the loop space of the real and symplectic Stiefel manifolds. As an application of these decompositions, we compute upper bounds for the pp-exponent of Wn,mW_{n,m}. Upper bounds for pp-exponents in the stable range 2m<n2m<n and 0<m≤(p−1)(p−2)0<m\leq (p-1)(p-2) are computed as well.
