Memory-based optical polarization conversion in a double-Λ atomic system with degenerate Zeeman states

Optical memory based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a double-Λatomic system provides a convenient way to convert the frequency, bandwidth or polarization of optical pulses by storing in oneΛchannel and retrieving in another. This memory-based optical converter can be used to bridge quantum nodes of different physical properties in a quantum network. However, in real atoms, each energy level usually contains degenerate Zeeman states and this may lead to additional energy loss, as have been discussed in our recent theoretical paper (Phys. Rev. A 100, 063843). Here, we present an experimental study on the efficiency variation in the EIT-memory-based optical polarization conversion in cold cesium atomsunder the Zeeman-state optical pumping. The experimental results support the theoretical predictions. Our works provide quantitative knowledge and physical insight useful to the practical implementation of EIT-memory-based optical converter.

Quantum storage and manipulation of heralded single photons in atomic quantum memories

We demonstrate the storage and manipulation of narrowband heralded single photons from a cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) source in the atomic quantum memory based on electromagnetically induced transparency. We show that nonclassical correlations are preserved between the heralding and the retrieved photons after storage process. By varying the intensity of the coupling field during retrieval process, we further demonstrate that the waveform or bandwidth of the single photons can be manipulated and the nonclassical correlation between the photon pairs can be even enhanced. Unlike previous works, our SPDC source is single mode in frequency, which not only reduces the experimental complexity arising from external filtering but also increases the useful photon generation rate. Our results can be scaled up with ease and thus lay the foundation for future realization of large-scale applications in quantum information processing.

Theoretical study on memory-based optical converter with degenerate Zeeman states

We present a theoretical study on the efficiency variation of coherent light conversion based on optical memories using the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) protocol in an atomic system with degenerate Zeeman states. Based on the Maxwell-Bloch equation, we obtain an approximate analytic solution for the converted light pulses which clarifies that two major factors affecting the efficiency of the converted pulses. The first one is the finite bandwidth effect of the pulses and the difference in the delay-bandwidth product of the writing and reading channel due to the difference in the transition dipole moment. The second one is the mismatch between the stored ground-state coherence and the ratio of the Clebsch-Gordan coefficient for the probe and control transition in the reading channel which results in a non-adiabatic energy loss. To correspond to real experimental conditions, we also perform a numerical calculation of the variation in conversion efficiency versus the Zeeman population distribution under the Zeeman-state optical pumping in storing a $σ^{+}$-polarized pulse and retrieving with $σ^{-}$ polarization in cesium atoms. Our work provides essential physical insights and quantitative knowledge for the development of a coherent optical converter based on EIT-memory.

Large Cross-Phase Modulations at the Few-Photon Level

We demonstrate an efficient cross-phase modulation (XPM) based on a closed-loop double-Λ system. The property of the double-Λ medium can be controlled by changing the phases of the applied optical fields. This phase-dependent XPM scheme can achieve large phase modulations at low-light intensities without requiring cavities or tightly focusing of laser beams. With this scheme, we observe a π-level phase shift with two pulses both consisting of 8 photons in cold rubidium atoms. Such novel scheme provides a simple route to generate strong interactions between photons and may have potential applications in all-optical quantum signal processing.

Phase-dependent double-Λ electromagnetically induced transparency

We theoretically investigate a double-Λ electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) system. The property of the double-Λ medium with a closed-loop configuration depends on the relative phase of the applied laser fields. This phase-dependent mechanism differentiates the double-Λ medium from the conventional Kerr-based nonlinear medium, e.g., EIT-based nonlinear medium discussed by Harris and Hau [Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 4611 (1999)], which depends only on the intensities of the applied laser fields. Steady-state analytical solutions for the phase-dependent system are obtained by solving the Maxwell-Bloch equations. In addition, we discuss efficient all-optical phase modulation and coherent light amplification based on the proposed double-Λ EIT scheme.
