A convergence result for a local planning problem for mean field games and rigorous proof of a Freidlin-Ventchel-type Large Deviations Principle for the $1+1$ KPZ equation

We prove the convergence of a viscous approximation to an one dimensional local mean field type planning problem with singular initial and terminal measures. Then we use this result to give a rigorous proof to a Freidlin-Ventchel-type Large Deviations Principle for the height of the $1+1$ KPZ equation.

Interpolation results for pathwise Hamilton-Jacobi equations

We study the interplay between the regularity of paths and Hamiltonians in the theory of pathwise Hamilton-Jacobi equations with the use of interpolation methods. The regularity of the paths is measured with respect to Sobolev, Besov, Hölder, and variation norms, and criteria for the Hamiltonians are presented in terms of both regularity and structure. We also explore various properties of functions that are representable as the difference of convex functions, the largest space of Hamiltonians for which the equation is well-posed for all continuous paths. Finally, we discuss some open problems and conjectures.

Mean Field Game Approach to Bitcoin Mining

We present an analysis of the Proof-of-Work consensus algorithm, used on the Bitcoin blockchain, using a Mean Field Game framework. Using a master equation, we provide an equilibrium characterization of the total computational power devoted to mining the blockchain (hashrate). From a simple setting we show how the master equation approach allows us to enrich the model by relaxing most of the simplifying assumptions. The essential structure of the game is preserved across all the enrichments. In deterministic settings, the hashrate ultimately reaches a steady state in which it increases at the rate of technological progress. In stochastic settings, there exists a target for the hashrate for every possible random state. As a consequence, we show that in equilibrium the security of the underlying blockchain is either $i)$ constant, or $ii)$ increases with the demand for the underlying cryptocurrency.

Efficiency of the Price Formation Process in Presence of High Frequency Participants: a Mean Field Game analysis

This paper deals with a stochastic order-driven market model with waiting costs, for order books with heterogenous traders. Offer and demand of liquidity drives price formation and traders anticipate future evolutions of the order book. The natural framework we use is mean field game theory, a class of stochastic differential games with a continuum of anonymous players. Several sources of heterogeneity are considered including the mean size of orders. Thus we are able to consider the coexistence of Institutional Investors and High Frequency Traders (HFT). We provide both analytical solutions and numerical experiments. Implications on classical quantities are explored: order book size, prices, and effective bid/ask spread. According to the model, in markets with Institutional Investors only we show the existence of inefficient liquidity imbalances in equilibrium, with two symmetrical situations corresponding to what we call liquidity calls for liquidity. During these situations the transaction price significantly moves away from the fair price. However this macro phenomenon disappears in markets with both Institutional Investors and HFT, although a more precise study shows that the benefits of the new situation go to HFT only, leaving Institutional Investors even with higher trading costs.

The master equation and the convergence problem in mean field games

The paper studies the convergence, as $N$ tends to infinity, of a system of $N$ coupled Hamilton-Jacobi equations, the Nash system. This system arises in differential game theory. We describe the limit problem in terms of the so-called "master equation", a kind of second order partial differential equation stated on the space of probability measures. Our first main result is the well-posedness of the master equation. To do so, we first show the existence and uniqueness of a solution to the "mean field game system with common noise", which consists in a coupled system made of a backward stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi equation and a forward stochastic Kolmogorov equation and which plays the role of characteristics for the master equation. Our second main result is the convergence, in average, of the solution of the Nash system and a propagation of chaos property for the associated "optimal trajectories".

Scalar conservation laws with rough (stochastic) fluxes; the spatially dependent case

We continue the development of the theory of pathwise stochastic entropy solutions for scalar conservation laws in $\R^N$ with quasilinear multiplicative ''rough path'' dependence by considering inhomogeneous fluxes and a single rough path like, for example, a Brownian motion. Following our previous note where we considered spatially independent fluxes, we introduce the notion of pathwise stochastic entropy solutions and prove that it is well posed, that is we establish existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence in the form of a (pathwise) $L^1$-contraction. Our approach is motivated by the theory of stochastic viscosity solutions, which was introduced and developed by two of the authors, to study fully nonlinear first- and second-order stochastic pde with multiplicative noise. This theory relies on special test functions constructed by inverting locally the flow of the stochastic characteristics. For conservation laws this is best implemented at the level of the kinetic formulation which we follow here.

Scalar conservation laws with rough (stochastic) fluxes

We develop a pathwise theory for scalar conservation laws with quasilinear multiplicative rough path dependence, a special case being stochastic conservation laws with quasilinear stochastic dependence. We introduce the notion of pathwise stochastic entropy solutions, which is closed with the local uniform limits of paths, and prove that it is well posed, i.e., we establish existence, uniqueness and continuous dependence, in the form of pathwise $L^1$-contraction, as well as some explicit estimates.

Stochastic averaging lemmas for kinetic equations

We develop a class of averaging lemmas for stochastic kinetic equations. The velocity is multiplied by a white noise which produces a remarkable change in time scale. Compared to the deterministic case and as far as we work in $L^2$, the nature of regularity on averages is not changed in this stochastic kinetic equation and stays in the range of fractional Sobolev spaces at the price of an additional expectation. However all the exponents are changed; either time decay rates are slower (when the right hand side belongs to $L^2$), or regularity is better when the right hand side contains derivatives. These changes originate from a different space/time scaling in the deterministic and stochastic cases. Our motivation comes from scalar conservation laws with stochastic fluxes where the structure under consideration arises naturally through the kinetic formulation of scalar conservation laws.
