A rotational hyperbolic theory for surface homeomorphisms

We develop a rotational hyperbolic theory for surface homeomorphisms. We use the equivalence relation on ergodic measures that have nontrivial rotational behaviour defined in [arXiv:2312.06249] to define a rotational counterpart of homoclinic classes. These allows to produce a network of horseshoes representing the whole rotational behaviour f the homeomorphism. We also study the counterpart of heteroclinic connections and give 5 different characterizations of such connections. The main technical tool is the forcing theory of Le Calvez and Tal [arXiv:1503.09127], [arXiv:1803.04557], and in particular a result of creation of periodic points that can also be seen as a statement of homotopically bounded deviations [arXiv:2511.14222]. This theoretical article is followed by a paper focused of some applications of it to the case of homeomorphisms with big rotation set [arXiv:2511.15220].

Bounded deviations in higher genus I: closed geodesics

This is the first article of a series of two where we study the problem of bounded deviations for homeomorphisms of closed surfaces of genus $\ge 2$. This first part studies bounded deviations with respect to closed geodesics. As a byproduct of our proofs, we also get a criterion of existence of periodic orbits in terms of big deviation with respect to some closed geodesic. The combination with the second part [arXiv:2511.14226] generalises to the higher genus case most of the bounded deviations results already known for the torus.

Bounded deviations in higher genus II: minimal laminations

This article follows and completes [arXiv:2511.14222], where we study the problem of bounded deviations for homeomorphisms of closed surfaces of genus $\ge 2$. This second part deals with bounded deviations relative to geodesic minimal laminations that are not reduced to a closed geodesic. The combination of both articles generalises to the higher genus case most of the bounded deviations results already known for the torus.

Surface homeomorphisms with big rotation set

This article consists in applications of [arXiv:2511.14232] in the case of homemomorphisms of higher genus surfaces whose homological rotation set is big enough -- a class of dynamics that is open. We first prove a structure theorem for the rotation set of such homeomorphisms: it is a finite union of convex sets, we get an optimal bound for the number of such pieces. This bound can be improved in the case of transitive (in this case the rotation set is convex) and non-wandering dynamics (and for such homeomorphisms we get the existence of a family of invariant essential open sets). We also get boundedness of deviations for homeomorphisms with big rotation set and some consequences of it, including a answer to Boyland's conjecture in our framework.

Homotopic rotation sets for higher genus surfaces

This paper states a definition of homotopic rotation set for higher genus surface homeomorphisms, as well as a collection of results that justify this definition. We first prove elementary results: we prove that this rotation set is star-shaped, we discuss the realisation of rotation vectors by orbits or periodic orbits and we prove the creation of new rotation vectors for some configurations. Then we use the theory developped by Le Calvez and Tal in [LCT18a] to obtain two deeper results:-- If the homotopical rotation set contains the direction of a closed geodesic which has a self-intersection, then there exists a rotational horseshoe and hence infinitely many periodic orbits in many directions.-- If the homotopical rotation set contains the directions of two closed geodesics that meet, there exists infinitely many periodic orbits in many directions.

Dirac physical measures on saddle-type fixed points

In this article we study some statistical aspects of surface diffeomorphisms. We first show that for a $C^1$ generic diffeomorphism, a Dirac invariant measure whose \emph{statistical basin of attraction} is dense in some open set and has positive Lebesgue measure, must be supported in the orbit of a sink. We then construct an example of a $C^1$-diffeomorphism having a Dirac invariant measure, supported on a hyperbolic fixed point of saddle type, whose statistical basin of attraction is a nowhere dense set with positive Lebesgue measure. Our technique can be applied also to construct a $C^1$ diffeomorphism whose set of points with historic behaviour has positive measure and is nowhere dense.

A Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets

In this paper, we generalize Minkowski's theorem. This theorem is usually stated for a centrally symmetric convex body and a lattice both included in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In some situations, one may replace the lattice by a more general set for which a notion of density exists. In this paper, we prove a Minkowski theorem for Meyer sets, which bounds from below the frequency of differences appearing in the Meyer set and belonging to a centrally symmetric convex body. In the later part of the paper, we develop quite natural applications of this theorem to Diophantine approximation and to discretization of linear maps.

On the genericity of the shadowing property for conservative homeomorphisms

We prove the genericity of the shadowing and periodic shadowing properties for both conservative and dissipative homeomorphisms on a compact connected manifold. Our proof is valid for topological manifolds and still holds in the dissipative case. As a consequence of this result, we establish the genericity of the specification property, the average shadowing property and the asymptotic average shadowing property in the conservative case.

Spatial discretizations of generic dynamical systems

How is it possible to read the dynamical properties (ie when the time goes to infinity) of a system on numerical simulations? To try to answer this question, we study in this manuscript a model reflecting what happens when the orbits of a discrete time system $f$ (for example an homeomorphism) are computed numerically . The computer working in finite numerical precision, it will replace $f$ by a spacial discretization of $f$, denoted by $f_N$ (where the order $N$ of discretization stands for the numerical accuracy). In particular, we will be interested in the dynamical behaviour of the finite maps $f_N$ for a generic system $f$ and $N$ going to infinity, where generic will be taken in the sense of Baire (mainly among sets of homeomorphisms or $C^1$-diffeomorphisms). The first part of this manuscript is devoted to the study of the dynamics of the discretizations $f_N$, when $f$ is a generic conservative/dissipative homeomorphism of a compact manifold. We show that it would be mistaken to try to recover the dynamics of $f$ from that of a single discretization $f_N$ : its dynamics strongly depends on the order $N$. To detect some dynamical features of $f$, we have to consider all the discretizations $f_N$ when $N$ goes through $\mathbf N$. The second part deals with the linear case, which plays an important role in the study of $C^1$-generic diffeomorphisms, discussed in the third part of this manuscript. Under these assumptions, we obtain results similar to those established in the first part, though weaker and harder to prove.

Discretizations of isometries

This paper deals with the dynamics of discretizations of isometries of $\mathbf R^n$, and more precisely the density of the successive images of $\mathbf Z^n$ by the discretizations of a generic sequence of isometries. We show that this density tends to 0 as the time goes to infinity. Thus, in general, all the information of a numerical image will be lost by applying many times a naive algorithm of rotation.

Model sets, almost periodic patterns, uniform density and linear maps

This article consists in two independent parts. In the first one, we investigate the geometric properties of almost periodicity of model sets (or cut-and-project sets, defined under the weakest hypotheses); in particular we show that they are almost periodic patterns and thus possess a uniform density. In the second part, we prove that the class of model sets and almost periodic patterns are stable under discretizations of linear maps.

Physical measures of discretizations of generic diffeomorphisms

What is the ergodic behaviour of numerically computed segments of orbits of a diffeomorphism? In this paper, we try to answer this question for a generic conservative $C^1$-diffeomorphism, and segments of orbits of Baire-generic points. The numerical truncation will be modelled by a spatial discretization. Our main result states that the uniform measures on the computed segments of orbits, starting from a generic point, accumulates on the whole set of measures that are invariant under the diffeomorphism. In particular, unlike what could be expected naively, such numerical experiments do not see the physical measures (or more precisely, cannot distinguish physical measures from the other invariant measures).

Propriétés dynamiques génériques des homéomorphismes conservatifs

This memoir is concerned with the generic dynamical properties of conservative homeomorphisms of compact manifolds. Several important techniques allowing to prove genericity results are presented: we emphasize the important role played by periodic approximations of homeomorphisms, and by the embedding of the space of homeomorphisms in the space of bi-measurable automorphisms.
