A spectral theorem for the semigroup generated by a class of infinitely many master equations

In this article we investigate the spectral properties of the infinitesimal generator of an infinite system of master equations arising in the analysis of the approach to equilibrium in statistical mechanics. The system under investigation thus consists of infinitely many first-order differential equations governing the time evolution of probabilities susceptible of describing jumps between the eigenstates of a differential operator with a discrete point spectrum. The transition rates between eigenstates are chosen in such a way that the so-called detailed balance conditions are satisfied, so that for a large class of initial conditions the given system possesses a global solution which converges exponentially rapidly toward a time independent probability of Gibbs type. A particular feature and a challenge of the problem under investigation is that in the natural functional space where the initial-value problem is well-posed, the infinitesimal generator is realized as a non normal and non dissipative compact operator, whose spectrum therefore does not exhibit a spectral gap around the zero eigenvalue in contrast to the finite-dimensional case.

On some Gaussian Bernstein processes in RN and the periodic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process

In this article we prove new results regarding the existence of Bernstein processes associated with the Cauchy problem of certain forward-backward systems of decoupled linear deterministic parabolic equations defined in Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension N, whose initial and final conditions are positive measures. We concentrate primarily on the case where the elliptic part of the parabolic operator is related to the Hamiltonian of an isotropic system of quantum harmonic oscillators. In this situation there are many Gaussian processes of interest whose existence follows from our analysis, including N-dimensional stationary and non-stationary Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, as well as a Bernstein bridge which may be interpreted as a Markovian loop in a particular case. We also introduce a new class of stationary non-Markovian processes which we eventually relate to the N-dimensional periodic Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process, and which is generated by a one-parameter family of non-Markovian probability measures. In this case our construction requires an infinite hierarchy of pairs of forward-backward heat equations associated with the pure point spectrum of the elliptic part, rather than just one pair in the Markovian case. We finally stress the potential relevance of these new processes to statistical mechanics, the random evolution of loops and general pattern theory.

Bernstein diffusions for a class of linear parabolic partial differential equations

In this article we prove the existence of Bernstein processes which we associate in a natural way with a class of linear parabolic initial-and final boundary value problems defined in bounded convex subsets of Euclidean space of arbitrary dimension. Under certain conditions regarding their endpoint distributions, we also prove that such processes become reversible Markov diffusions. Furthermore we show that those diffusions satisfy two Itô equations for some suitably constructed Wiener processes, and from that analysis derive Feynman-Kac representations for the solutions to the given equations. We then illustrate some of our results by considering the heat equation with Neumann boundary conditions both in a one-dimensional bounded interval and in a two-dimensional disk.

Forward-backward systems of stochastic differential equations generated by Bernstein diffusions

In this short article we present new results that bring about hitherto unknown relations between certain Bernstein diffusions wandering in bounded convex domains of Euclidean space on the one hand, and processes which typically occur in forward-backward systems of stochastic differential equations on the other hand. A key point in establishing such relations lies in the fact that the Bernstein diffusions we consider are actually reversible Itô diffusions.
