Classical Multiseparable Hamiltonian Systems, Superintegrability and Haantjes Geometry

We show that the theory of classical Hamiltonian systems admitting separating variables can be formulated in the context of ($ω, \mathscr{H}$) structures. They are symplectic manifolds endowed with a compatible Haantjes algebra $\mathscr{H}$, namely an algebra of (1,1)-tensor fields with vanishing Haantjes torsion. A special class of coordinates, called Darboux-Haantjes coordinates, will be constructed from the Haantjes algebras associated with a separable system. These coordinates enable the additive separation of variables of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We shall prove that a multiseparable system admits as many $ω\mathscr{H}$ structures as separation coordinate systems. In particular, we will show that a large class of multiseparable, superintegrable systems, including the Smorodinsky-Winternitz systems and some physically relevant systems with three degrees of freedom, possesses multiple Haantjes structures.

Generalized Nijenhuis Torsions and block-diagonalization of operator fields

The theory of generalized Nijenhuis torsions, which extends the classical notions due to Nijenhuis and Haantjes, offers new tools for the study of normal forms of operator fields. We propose a general result ensuring that, given a family of commuting operator fields whose generalized Nijenhuis torsion of level $l$ vanishes, there exists a local chart where all operators can be simultaneously block-diagonalized. We also introduce the notion of generalized Haantjes algebra, consisting of operators with a vanishing higher-level torsion, as a new algebraic structure naturally generalizing standard Haantjes algebras.

Higher Haantjes Brackets and Integrability

We propose a new, infinite class of brackets generalizing the Frölicher--Nijenhuis bracket. This class can be reduced to a family of generalized Nijenhuis torsions recently introduced. In particular, the Haantjes bracket, the first example of our construction, is relevant in the characterization of Haantjes moduli of operators. We shall also prove that the vanishing of a higher-level Nijenhuis torsion of a given operator is a sufficient condition for the integrability of its generalized eigen-distributions. This result (which does not require any knowledge of the spectral properties of the operator) generalizes the celebrated Haantjes theorem. The same vanishing condition also guarantees that the operator can be written, in a local chart, in a block-diagonal form.

A generalized permutation entropy for random processes

Permutation entropy measures the complexity of deterministic time series via a data symbolic quantization consisting of rank vectors called ordinal patterns or just permutations. The reasons for the increasing popularity of this entropy in time series analysis include that (i) it converges to the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of the underlying dynamics in the limit of ever longer permutations, and (ii) its computation dispenses with generating and ad hoc partitions. However, permutation entropy diverges when the number of allowed permutations grows super-exponentially with their length, as is usually the case when time series are output by random processes. In this Letter we propose a generalized permutation entropy that is finite for random processes, including discrete-time dynamical systems with observational or dynamical noise.

Critical behavior of su(1|1) supersymmetric spin chains with long-range interactions

We introduce a general class of su$(1|1)$ supersymmetric spin chains with long-range interactions which includes as particular cases the su$(1|1)$ Inozemtsev (elliptic) and Haldane-Shastry chains, as well as the XX model. We show that this class of models can be fermionized with the help of the algebraic properties of the su$(1|1)$ permutation operator, and take advantage of this fact to analyze their quantum criticality when a chemical potential term is present in the Hamiltonian. We first study the low energy excitations and the low temperature behavior of the free energy, which coincides with that of a $(1+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) with central charge $c=1$ when the chemical potential lies in the critical interval $(0,\mathcal E(π))$, $\mathcal E(p)$ being the dispersion relation. We also analyze the von Neumann and Rényi ground state entanglement entropies, showing that they exhibit the logarithmic scaling with the size of the block of spins characteristic of a one-boson $(1+1)$-dimensional CFT. Our results thus show that the models under study are quantum critical when the chemical potential belongs to the critical interval, with central charge $c=1$. From the analysis of the fermion density at zero temperature, we also conclude that there is a quantum phase transition at both ends of the critical interval. This is further confirmed by the behavior of the fermion density at finite temperature, which is studied analytically (at low temperature), as well as numerically for the su$(1|1)$ elliptic chain.

Generalized isotropic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models: ground state entanglement and quantum entropies

We introduce a new class of generalized isotropic Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models with su$(m+1)$ spin and long-range non-constant interactions, whose non-degenerate ground state is a Dicke state of su$(m+1)$ type. We evaluate in closed form the reduced density matrix of a block of $L$ spins when the whole system is in its ground state, and study the corresponding von Neumann and Rényi entanglement entropies in the thermodynamic limit. We show that both of these entropies scale as $a\log L$ when $L$ tends to infinity, where the coefficient $a$ is equal to $(m-k)/2$ in the ground state phase with $k$ vanishing su$(m+1)$ magnon densities. In particular, our results show that none of these generalized Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models are critical, since when $L\to\infty$ their Rényi entropy $R_q$ becomes independent of the parameter $q$. We have also computed the Tsallis entanglement entropy of the ground state of these generalized su$(m+1)$ Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick models, finding that it can be made extensive by an appropriate choice of its parameter only when $m-k\ge3$. Finally, in the su$(3)$ case we construct in detail the phase diagram of the ground state in parameter space, showing that it is determined in a simple way by the weights of the fundamental representation of su$(3)$. This is also true in the su$(m+1)$ case; for instance, we prove that the region for which all the magnon densities are non-vanishing is an $(m+1)$-simplex in $\mathbf R^m$ whose vertices are the weights of the fundamental representation of su$(m+1)$.

Generalized Sobolev orthogonal polynomials, matrix moment problems and integrable systems

We introduce a large class of Sobolev bi-orthogonal polynomial sequences arising from a $LU$-factorizable moment matrix and associated with a suitable measure matrix that characterizes the Sobolev bilinear form. A theory of deformations of Sobolev bilinear forms is also proposed. We consider both polynomial deformations and a class of transformations related to the action of linear operators on the entries of a given bilinear form. Transformation formulae among new and old polynomial sequences are determined. Finally, integrable hierarchies of evolution equations arising from the factorization of a time deformation of the moment matrix are presented.

Groups, Information Theory and Einstein's Likelihood Principle

We propose a unifying picture where the notion of generalized entropy is related to information theory by means of a group-theoretical approach. The group structure comes from the requirement that an entropy be well defined with respect to the composition of independent systems, in the context of a recently proposed generalization of the Shannon-Khinchin axioms. We associate to each member of a large class of entropies a generalized information measure, satisfying the additivity property on a set of independent systems as a consequence of the underlying group law. At the same time, we also show that Einstein's likelihood function naturally emerges as a byproduct of our informational interpretation of (generally nonadditive) entropies. These results confirm the adequacy of composable entropies both in physical and social science contexts.

On the characterization of integrable systems via the Haantjes geometry

We prove that the existence of a Haantjes structure is a necessary and sufficient condition for a Hamiltonian system to be integrable in the Liouville-Arnold sense. This structure, expressed in terms of suitable operators whose Haantjes torsion vanishes, encodes the main features of the notion of integrability, and in particular, under certain hypotheses, allows to solve the problem of determining separation of variables for a given system in an algorithmic way. As an application of the theory, we prove theorems ensuring the existence of a large class of completely integrable systems in the Euclidean plane, constructed starting from a prescribed Haantjes structure. At the same time, we also show that some of the most classical examples of Hamiltonian systems in n dimensions, as for instance the Gantmacher and Stäckel classes, all possess a natural Haantjes structure.

A new entropy based on a group-theoretical structure

A multi-parametric version of the nonadditive entropy $S_{q}$ is introduced. This new entropic form, denoted by $S_{a,b,r}$, possesses many interesting statistical properties, and it reduces to the entropy $S_q$ for $b=0$, $a=r:=1-q$ (hence Boltzmann-Gibbs entropy $S_{BG}$ for $b=0$, $a=r \to 0$). The construction of the entropy $S_{a,b,r}$ is based on a general group-theoretical approach recently proposed by one of us \cite{Tempesta2}. Indeed, essentially all the properties of this new entropy are obtained as a consequence of the existence of a rational group law, which expresses the structure of $S_{a,b,r}$ with respect to the composition of statistically independent subsystems. Depending on the choice of the parameters, the entropy $S_{a,b,r}$ can be used to cover a wide range of physical situations, in which the measure of the accessible phase space increases say exponentially with the number of particles $N$ of the system, or even stabilizes, by increasing $N$, to a limiting value. This paves the way to the use of this entropy in contexts where a system "freezes" some or many of its degrees of freedom by increasing the number of its constituting particles or subsystems.

A Parallel Space Saving Algorithm For Frequent Items and the Hurwitz zeta distribution

We present a message-passing based parallel version of the Space Saving algorithm designed to solve the $k$--majority problem. The algorithm determines in parallel frequent items, i.e., those whose frequency is greater than a given threshold, and is therefore useful for iceberg queries and many other different contexts. We apply our algorithm to the detection of frequent items in both real and synthetic datasets whose probability distribution functions are a Hurwitz and a Zipf distribution respectively. Also, we compare its parallel performances and accuracy against a parallel algorithm recently proposed for merging summaries derived by the Space Saving or Frequent algorithms.

Beyond the Shannon-Khinchin Formulation: The Composability Axiom and the Universal Group Entropy

The notion of entropy is ubiquitous both in natural and social sciences. In the last two decades, a considerable effort has been devoted to the study of new entropic forms, which generalize the standard Boltzmann-Gibbs (BG) entropy and are widely applicable in thermodynamics, quantum mechanics and information theory. In [23], by extending previous ideas of Shannon [38], [39], Khinchin proposed an axiomatic definition of the BG entropy, based on four requirements, nowadays known as the Shannon-Khinchin (SK) axioms. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we show that there exists an intrinsic group-theoretical structure behind the notion of entropy. It comes from the requirement of composability of an entropy with respect to the union of two statistically independent subsystems, that we propose in an axiomatic formulation. Second, we show that there exists a simple universal class of admissible entropies. This class contains many well known examples of entropies and infinitely many new ones, a priori multi-parametric. Due to its specific relation with the universal formal group, the new family of entropies introduced in this work will be called the universal-group entropy. A new example of multi-parametric entropy is explicitly constructed.

Galois differential algebras and categorical discretization of dynamical systems

A categorical theory for the discretization of a large class of dynamical systems with variable coefficients is proposed. It is based on the existence of covariant functors between the Rota category of Galois differential algebras and suitable categories of abstract dynamical systems. The integrable maps obtained share with their continuous counterparts a large class of solutions and, in the linear case, the Picard-Vessiot group.

On the robustness of the $q$-Gaussian family

We introduce three deformations, called $α$-, $β$- and $γ$-deformation respectively, of a $N$-body probabilistic model, first proposed by Rodríguez et al. (2008), having $q$-Gaussians as $N\to\infty$ limiting probability distributions. The proposed $α$- and $β$-deformations are asymptotically scale-invariant, whereas the $γ$-deformation is not. We prove that, for both $α$- and $β$-deformations, the resulting deformed triangles still have $q$-Gaussians as limiting distributions, with a value of $q$ independent (dependent) on the deformation parameter in the $α$-case ($β$-case). In contrast, the $γ$-case, where we have used the celebrated $Q$-numbers and the Gauss binomial coefficients, yields other limiting probability distribution functions, outside the $q$-Gaussian family. These results suggest that scale-invariance might play an important role regarding the robustness of the $q$-Gaussian family.

The Lazard formal group, universal congruences and special values of zeta functions

A connection between the theory of formal groups and arithmetic number theory is established. In particular, it is shown how to construct general Almkvist--Meurman--type congruences for the universal Bernoulli polynomials that are related with the Lazard universal formal group \cite{Tempesta1}-\cite{Tempesta3}. Their role in the theory of $L$--genera for multiplicative sequences is illustrated. As an application, sequences of integer numbers are constructed. New congruences are also obtained, useful to compute special values of a new class of Riemann--Hurwitz--type zeta functions.

Integrable maps from Galois differential algebras, Borel transforms and number sequences

A new class of integrable maps, obtained as lattice versions of polynomial dynamical systems is introduced. These systems are obtained by means of a discretization procedure that preserves several analytic and algebraic properties of a given differential equation, in particular symmetries and integrability [40]. Our approach is based on the properties of a suitable Galois differential algebra, that we shall call a Rota algebra. A formulation of the procedure in terms of category theory is proposed. In order to render the lattice dynamics confined, a Borel regularization is also adopted. As a byproduct of the theory, a connection between number sequences and integrability is discussed.

Generalized Lenard Chains, Separation of Variables and Superintegrability

We show that the notion of generalized Lenard chains naturally allows formulation of the theory of multi-separable and superintegrable systems in the context of bi-Hamiltonian geometry. We prove that the existence of generalized Lenard chains generated by a Hamiltonian function defined on a four-dimensional ωN manifold guarantees the separation of variables. As an application, we construct such chains for the Hénon-Heiles systems and for the classical Smorodinsky-Winternitz systems. New bi-Hamiltonian structures for the Kepler potential are found.

Group entropies, correlation laws and zeta functions

The notion of group entropy is proposed. It enables to unify and generalize many different definitions of entropy known in the literature, as those of Boltzmann-Gibbs, Tsallis, Abe and Kaniadakis. Other new entropic functionals are presented, related to nontrivial correlation laws characterizing universality classes of systems out of equilibrium, when the dynamics is weakly chaotic. The associated thermostatistics are discussed. The mathematical structure underlying our construction is that of formal group theory, which provides the general structure of the correlations among particles and dictates the associated entropic functionals. As an example of application, the role of group entropies in information theory is illustrated and generalizations of the Kullback-Leibler divergence are proposed. A new connection between statistical mechanics and zeta functions is established. In particular, Tsallis entropy is related to the classical Riemann zeta function.
