Mutual friction and vortex Hall angle in a strongly interacting Fermi superfluid

The motion of a quantized vortex is intimately connected with its microscopic structure and the elementary excitations of the surrounding fluid. In this work, we investigate the two-dimensional motion of a single vortex orbiting a pinned anti-vortex in a unitary Fermi superfluid at varying temperature. By analyzing its trajectory, we measure the yet-unknown longitudinal and transverse mutual friction coefficients, which quantify the vortex-mediated coupling between the normal and superfluid components. Both coefficients increase while approaching the superfluid transition. They provide access to the vortex Hall angle, which is linked to the relaxation time of the localized quasiparticles occupying Andreev bound states within the vortex core, as well as the intrinsic superfluid parameter associated with the transition from laminar to quantum turbulent flows. We compare our results with numerical simulations and an analytic model originally formulated for superfluid $^3$He in the low-temperature limit, finding good agreement. Our work highlights the interplay between vortex-bound quasiparticles and delocalized thermal excitations in shaping vortex dynamics in unitary Fermi superfluids. Further, it provides a novel testbed for studying out-of-equilibrium vortex matter at finite temperatures.

BCS-BEC Crossover and Pairing Fluctuations in a Two Band Superfluid/Superconductor: A T Matrix Approach

We investigate pairing fluctuation effects in a two band fermionic system, where a shallow band in the Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer--Bose--Einstein condensation (BCS-BEC) crossover regime is coupled with a weakly interacting deep band. Within a diagrammatic $T$ matrix approach, we~report how thermodynamic quantities such as the critical temperature, chemical potential, {and~momentum distributions} undergo the crossover from the BCS to BEC regime by tuning the intraband coupling in the shallow band. We also generalize the definition of Tan's contact to a two band system and report the two contacts for different pair-exchange couplings. The present results are compared with those obtained by the simpler Nozières--Schmitt--Rink approximation. We confirm a pronounced enhancement of the critical temperature due to the multiband configuration, as well as to the pair-exchange coupling.

Hidden Pseudogap and Excitation Spectra in a Strongly Coupled Two-Band Superfluid/Superconductor

We investigate single-particle excitation properties in the normal state of a two-band superconductor or superfluid throughout the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein-condensation (BEC) crossover, within the many-body T-matrix approximation for multi-channel pairing fluctuations. We address the single-particle density of states and the spectral functions consisting of two contributions associated with a waekly interacting deep band and a strongly interacting shallow band, relevant for iron-based multiband superconductors and multicomponent fermionic superfluids. We show how the pseudogap state in the shallow band is hidden by the deep band contribution throughout the two-band BCS-BEC crossover. Our results could explain the missing pseudogap in recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments in FeSe superconductors.

Condensed phase of Bose-Fermi mixtures with a pairing interaction

We study the condensed phase of a Bose-Fermi mixture with a tunable pairing interaction between bosons and fermions with many-body diagrammatic methods and fixed-node diffusion Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. A universal behavior of the condensate fraction and bosonic momentum distribution with respect to the boson concentration is found to hold in an extended range of boson-fermion couplings and concentrations. For vanishing boson density, we prove that the bosonic condensate fraction reduces to the quasiparticle weight Z of the Fermi polaron studied in the context of polarized Fermi gases, unifying in this way two apparently unrelated quantities.

Single-particle spectral functions in the normal phase of a strongly-attractive Bose-Fermi mixture

We calculate the single-particle spectral functions and quasi-particle dispersions for a Bose-Fermi mixture when the boson-fermion attraction is sufficiently strong to suppress completely the condensation of bosons at zero temperature. Within a T-matrix diagrammatic approach, we vary the boson-fermion attraction from the critical value where the boson condensate first disappears to the strongly attractive (molecular) regime and study the effect of both mass- and density-imbalance on the spectral weights and dispersions. An interesting spectrum of particle-hole excitations mixing two different Fermi surfaces is found. These unconventional excitations could be produced and explored experimentally with radio-frequency spectroscopy.

Grey solitons in a strongly interacting superfluid Fermi Gas

The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer to Bose-Einstein condensate (BCS to BEC) crossover problem is solved for stationary grey solitons via the Boguliubov-de Gennes equations at zero temperature. These \emph{crossover solitons} exhibit a localized notch in the gap and a characteristic phase difference across the notch for all interaction strengths, from BEC to BCS regimes. However, they do not follow the well-known Josephson-like sinusoidal relationship between velocity and phase difference except in the far BEC limit: at unitary the velocity has a nearly linear dependence on phase difference over an extended range. For fixed phase difference the soliton is of nearly constant depth from the BEC limit to unitarity and then grows progressively shallower into the BCS limit, and on the BCS side Friedel oscillations are apparent in both gap amplitude and phase. The crossover soliton appears fundamentally in the gap; we show, however, that the density closely follows the gap, and the soliton is therefore observable. We develop an approximate power law relationship to express this fact: the density of grey crossover solitons varies as the square of the gap amplitude in the BEC limit and a power of about 1.5 at unitarity.

Pairing and condensation in a resonant Bose-Fermi mixture

We study by diagrammatic methods a mixture of single-component bosons and fermions, with boson-fermion coupling tuned by a Fano-Feshbach resonance. For increasing coupling, the growing boson-fermion pairing correlations progressively reduce the boson condensation temperature and make it eventually vanish at a critical coupling. Such quantum critical point depends very weakly on the population imbalance and for vanishing boson densities coincides with that found for the polaron-molecule transition in a strongly imbalanced Fermi gas, thus bridging two quite distinct physical systems.

Integer-spin Heisenberg Chains in a Staggered Magnetic Field. A Nonlinear $σ$-Model Approach

We present here a nonlinear sigma-model (NL$σ$M) study of a spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain in an external commensurate staggered magnetic field. We find, already at the mean-field level, excellent agreement with recent and very accurate Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) studies, and that up to the highest values of the field for which a comparison is possible, for the staggered magnetization and the transverse spin gap. Qualitative but not quantitative agreement is found between the NL$σ$M predictions for the longitudinal spin gap and the DMRG results. The origin of the discrepancies is traced and discussed. Our results allow for extensions to higher-spin chains that have not yet been studied numerically, and the predictions for a spin-2 chain are presented and discussed. Comparison is also made with previous theoretical approaches that led instead to predictions in disagreement with the DMRG results.
