Beam-Plasma Instability and Fast Particles: the Lynden-Bell Approach

The beam-plasma instability, i.e. the response of the plasma bulk to the injection of supra thermal charged-particle beams, results to be appropriately characterized by a long-range interaction system. This physical system hosts a number of very interesting phenomena and, in particular, the emergence of long-lived quasi-stationary states. We characterize the self-consistent distribution functions of such out-of-equilibrium states by means of the Lynden-Bell's theory. The prediction of this theory, based on the statistical mechanics of the Vlasov equation, are checked against the outcomes of numerical simulations of the discrete system. Moreover, a phenomenological study of the effective resonance band for the system response is also addressed. A threshold value has been found in the initial spread of beam-particle momenta. This threshold allows to discriminate between the resonant and non-resonant regimes. The analysis of the thermalization of a few percents of the beam population characterized by large initial momenta (with respect to the main part of the beam itself) is also performed and it confirms and deepens the understanding of the physical meaning of the mentioned threshold.

Accuracy of unperturbed motion of particles in a gyrokinetic semi-Lagrangian code

Inaccurate description of the equilibrium can yield to spurious effects in gyrokinetic turbulence simulations. Also, the Vlasov solver and time integration schemes impact the conservation of physical quantities, especially in long-term simulations. Equilibrium and Vlasov solver have to be tuned in order to preserve constant states (equilibrium) and to provide good conservation property along time (mass to begin with). Several illustrative simple test cases are given to show typical spurious effects that one can observes for poor settings. We explain why Forward Semi-Lagrangian scheme bring us some benefits. Some toroidal and cylindrical GYSELA runs are shown that use FSL.

Transport barrier for the radial diffusion due to the ExB drift motion of guiding centers in cylindrical confinement geometry

We consider the radial transport of test particles due to the ExB drift motion in the guiding center approximation. Using an explicit expression to modify the electrostatic potential, we show that it is possible to construct a transport barrier which suppresses radial transport. We propose an algorithm for the implementation of this local modification computed from an electrostatic potential known on a spatio-temporal grid. The number of particles which escape the inner region defined by the barrier measures the efficiency of the control. We show that the control is robust by showing a significant reduction of radial transport, when applied with a reduced number of probes aligned on a circle.

Derivation of a gyrokinetic model. Existence and uniqueness of specific stationary solutions

A finite Larmor radius approximation is derived from the classical Vlasov equation, in the limit of large (and uniform) external magnetic field. We also provide an heuristic derivation of the electroneutrality equation in the finite Larmor radius setting. Existence and uniqueness of a solution is proven in the stationary frame for solutions depending only on the direction parallel to the magnetic field and factorizing in the velocity variables.

Reduction and approximation in gyrokinetics

The gyrokinetics formulation of plasmas in strong magnetic fields aims at the elimination of the angle associated with the Larmor rotation of charged particles around the magnetic field lines. In a perturbative treatment or as a time-averaging procedure, gyrokinetics is in general an approximation to the true dynamics. Here we discuss the conditions under which gyrokinetics is either an approximation or an exact operation in the framework of reduction of dynamical systems with symmetry
