Backscatter Communication Through Disordered Media Enabled by a Programmable Leaky Cavity

Retrieving information through disordered scattering systems remains a major challenge in wireless communication and sensing due to the severe distortion and attenuation caused by multiple scattering. Here, we demonstrate robust focusing through random media using a leaky cavity made programmable by reconfigurable metasurfaces. We show that the leaky cavity leverages backscattering from the disordered medium to enhance the degree of control over the transmitted field. We achieve an enhancement in focused intensity by an order of magnitude compared to a horn antenna. We further demonstrate robust communication through the medium using low-power amplitude-modulated signals, and finally implement a backscatter communication scheme in which the same cavity illuminates and decodes data from a passive reflectivity-modulating target embedded within the disorder. Our results open new possibilities for reliable communication and sensing in complex environments.

Radar Cross Section Measurement within Reverberation Chamber: Stirrer position issues

This paper presents the evaluation of the Radar Cross Section (RCS) of a metallic object by measurements accomplished within the diffuse-field environment produced by a Reverberation Chamber (RC). The method is based on the extraction of the ballistic wave between the antenna and the target that is mixed with the backscattering response of the RC. A good agreement is obtained when compared with classical RCS measurement inside an anechoic chamber. This communication also highlights the potential stirrer positioning issues and their impact on the retrieved RCS accuracy.

Measurement Method for Evaluating the Probability Distribution of the Quality Factor of Mode-Stirred Reverberation Chambers

An original experimental method for determining the empirical probability distribution function (PDF) of the quality factor (Q) of a mode-stirred reverberation chamber is presented. Spectral averaging of S-parameters across a relatively narrow frequency interval at a single pair of locations for the transmitting and receiving antennas is applied to estimate the stored and dissipated energy in the cavity, avoiding the need for spatial scanning to obtain spatial volume or surface averages. The effective number of simultaneously excited cavity modes per stir state, M, can be estimated by fitting the empirical distribution to the parametrized theoretical distribution. The measured results support a previously developed theoretical model for the PDF of Q and show that spectral averaging over a bandwidth as small as a few hundred kHz is sufficient to obtain accurate results.
