Measurements of Beam Backgrounds in SuperKEKB Phase 2

The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider will result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgro\ unds in the interaction region. Understanding and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle~II experi\ ment. We report on the first background measurements performed after roll-in of the Belle II detector, a period known as SuperKE\ KB Phase 2, utilizing both the BEAST II system of dedicated background detectors and the Belle II detector itself. We also repor\ t on first revisions to the background simulation made in response to our findings. Backgrounds measured include contributions f\ rom synchrotron radiation, beam-gas, Touschek, and injection backgrounds. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds origina\ ting from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV elect\ ron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds for\ ward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector.

Analytical estimation of ATF beam halo distribution

In order to study the background status in the ATF2 beam line and the interaction point (IP), this paper developed an analytical method to give the estimation of ATF beam halo distribution based on K. Hirata and K. Yokoya's theory. The equilibrium particle distribution of beam tail in ATF damping ring, when each electron is being affected by, in addition to the synchrotron radiation damping effects, several stochastic processes, such as beam-gas scattring, beam-gas bremsstrahlung and intra-beam scattering, was presented. This method is common and can be applied on other electron rings.

Beam halo study on ATF damping ring

Halo distribution is a key topic for background study. This paper has developed an analytical method to give an estimation of ATF beam halo distribution. The equilibrium particle distribution of the beam tail in the ATF damping ring is calculated analytically with different emittance and different vacuum degree. The analytical results agree the measurements very well. This is a general method which can be applied to any electron rings.

In vacuum diamond sensor scanner for beam halo measurements in the beam line at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility

The investigation of beam halo transverse distributions is important for the understanding of beam losses and the control of backgrounds in Future Linear Colliders (FLC). A novel in vacuum diamond sensor (DSv) scanner with four strips has been designed and developed for the investigation of the beam halo transverse distributions and also for the diagnostics of Compton recoil electrons after the interaction point (IP) of ATF2, a low energy (1.3 GeV) prototype of the final focus system for the ILC and CLIC linear collider projects. Using the DSv, a dynamic range of $\sim10^6$ has been successfully demonstrated and confirmed for the first time by simultaneous beam core ($\sim10^9$ electrons) and beam halo ($\sim10^3$ electrons) measurements at ATF2. This report presents the characterization, performance studies and tests of the diamond sensors using an $α$ source as well as using the electron beams at PHIL, a low energy ($< 10$ MeV) photo-injector at LAL, and at ATF2. First beam halo measurement results using the DSv at ATF2 with different beam intensities and vacuum levels are also presented. Such measurements not only allow one to evaluate the different sources of beam halo generation but also to define the requirements for a suitable collimation system to be installed at ATF2, as well as to optimize its performance during future operation.

Non-interleaved FFS design

The requirements on the Final Focusing System (FFS) for a new linear collider has lead to lattice designs where chromaticity is corrected either locally or non-locally. Here, we present the status of an alternative lattice design developed for the current CLIC 500GeV beam parameters where chromaticity is corrected upstream the Final Doublet (FD) and the geometrical components in the vertical plane are corrected locally. The diagnose of this design showed to possible variations two the lattice : the second order dispersion and its derivative with respect to $s$ must be cancelled before the FD, or some dispersion must be tolerated at the sextupole located inside the FD.

Study of alternative ILC final focus optical configurations

The role of the ILC final focus system (FFS) is to demagnify the beam to the sizes at the IP required to meet the ILC luminosity goals. The current design of final focus performs perfect chromaticity correction in both horizontal and vertical planes. Based on this design a set of alternative optical configurations were studied in which the horizontal beam size at the IP is increased while at the same time the vertical one is decreased, with the goal of reducing beamsstrahlung emission. Luminosity reduction due to the hour glass effect must be considered because betay*/sigmaz* becomes much smaller in this case. The beam-beam interaction simulation by Guineapig++ was used for evaluation. Reduced bunch lengths are used to make sure that the obtained luminosities are not lower than those of the ILC original (nominal) configuration.

Forward Instrumentation for ILC Detectors

Two special calorimeters are foreseen for the instrumentation of the very forward region of the ILC detector, a luminometer designed to measure the rate of low angle Bhabha scattering events with a precision better than 10-3 and a low polar angle calorimeter, adjacent to the beam-pipe. The latter will be hit by a large amount of beamstrahlung remnants. The amount and shape of these depositions will allow a fast luminosity estimate and the determination of beam parameters. The sensors of this calorimeter must be radiation hard. Both devices will improve the hermeticity of the detector in the search for new particles. Finely segmented and very compact calorimeters will match the requirements. Due to the high occupancy fast front-end electronics is needed. The design of the calorimeters developed and optimised with Monte Carlo simulations is presented. Sensors and readout electronics ASICs have been designed and prototypes are available. Results on the performance of these major components are summarised.
