Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron at incident energies below 1.15 GeV

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $π^0 η$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $π^0 η$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πη}$, the $π^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πd}$, the $ηd$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{ηd}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $dσ/dΩ_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $dσ/dΩ_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $dσ/dM_{ηd}$ near the $ηd$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $ηd$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $η$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $π^0η$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $η$-nuclear interaction are also discussed.

Scintillator ageing of the T2K near detectors from 2010 to 2021

The T2K experiment widely uses plastic scintillator as a target for neutrino interactions and an active medium for the measurement of charged particles produced in neutrino interactions at its near detector complex. Over 10 years of operation the measured light yield recorded by the scintillator based subsystems has been observed to degrade by 0.9--2.2\% per year. Extrapolation of the degradation rate through to 2040 indicates the recorded light yield should remain above the lower threshold used by the current reconstruction algorithms for all subsystems. This will allow the near detectors to continue contributing to important physics measurements during the T2K-II and Hyper-Kamiokande eras. Additionally, work to disentangle the degradation of the plastic scintillator and wavelength shifting fibres shows that the reduction in light yield can be attributed to the ageing of the plastic scintillator.

Study of two color QCD on large lattices

We study two colors lattice QCD (QC$_2$D) with two flavors of staggered fermions on $40^4$ and $32^4$ lattices with lattice spacing $a =0.048$~fm in the wide range of the quark chemical potential $μ_q$. Our focus is on the confinement-deconfinement transition in this theory. Thus we compute the string tension from the Wilson loops and the static quark free energy from the Polyakov loops. We find that the deconfinement transition found earlier in the range $μ_q \approx 800 - 1000$ MeV is shifted to higher values. This shift is attributed to decreasing of the lattice spacing used in our simulations in comparison with the earlier study.

Zero-field current-induced Hall effect in ferrotoroidic metal

We have performed precise Hall measurements for the ferrotoroidic candidate material UNi4B. Below Neel temperature TN ~ 20 K (corresponding to the ferrotoroidic transition temperature), a Hall voltage becomes finite even at zero field and changes proportional to the square of current density; by contrast, it is almost zero above TN. Moreover, we have found that a current-induced magnetization estimated from our Hall effect measurements is qualitatively consistent with the previous directly measured value. These results provide strong evidence for a magnetoelectric phenomenon uniquely in ferrotoroidic metals -- a zero-field nonlinear Hall effect resulting from the current-induced magnetization connecting the ferrotoroidal moments.

Constraint on the Matter-Antimatter Symmetry-Violating Phase in Neutrino Oscillations

The current laws of physics do not explain the observed imbalance of matter and antimatter in the universe. Sakharov proposed that an explanation would require the violation of CP symmetry between matter and antimatter. The only CP violation observed so far is in the weak interactions of quarks, and it is too small to explain the matter-antimatter imbalance of the universe. It has been shown that CP violation in the lepton sector could generate the matter-antimatter disparity through the process called leptogenesis. The quantum mixing of neutrinos, the neutral leptons in the Standard Model, provides a potential source of CP violation through a complex phase dCP, which may have consequences for theoretical models of leptogenesis. This CP violation can be measured in muon neutrino to electron neutrino oscillations and the corresponding antineutrino oscillations, which are experimentally accessible with accelerator-produced beams as established by the T2K experiment. Until now, the value of dCP has not been significantly constrained by neutrino oscillation experiments. Here the T2K collaboration reports a measurement that favors large enhancement of the neutrino oscillation probability, excluding values of dCP which result in a large enhancement of the observed anti-neutrino oscillation probability at three standard deviations (3 sigma). The 3 sigma confidence level interval for dCP, which is cyclic and repeats every 2pi, is [-3.41,-0.03] for the so-called normal mass ordering, and [-2.54,-0.32] for the inverted mass ordering. Our results show an indication of CP violation in the lepton sector. Herein we establish methods for sensitive searches for matter-antimatter asymmetry in neutrino oscillations using accelerator-produced neutrino beams. Future measurements with larger data samples will determine whether the leptonic CP violation is larger than the quark sector CP violation.

First combined measurement of the muon neutrino and antineutrino charged-current cross section without pions in the final state at T2K

This paper presents the first combined measurement of the double-differential muon neutrino and antineutrino charged-current cross sections with no pions in the final state on hydrocarbon at the off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The data analyzed in this work comprise 5.8$\times$10$^{20}$ and 6.3$\times$10$^{20}$ protons on target in neutrino and antineutrino mode respectively, at a beam energy peak of 0.6 GeV. Using the two measured cross sections, the sum, difference and asymmetry were calculated with the aim of better understanding the nuclear effects involved in such interactions. The extracted measurements have been compared with the prediction from different Monte Carlo generators and theoretical models showing that the difference between the two cross sections have interesting sensitivity to nuclear effects.

Nanoscale imaging of unusual photo-acoustic waves in thin flake VTe$_2$

Controlling acoustic phonons, the carriers of sound and heat, has been attracting great attention toward the manipulation of sonic and thermal properties in nanometric devices. In particular, the photo-acoustic effect using ultrafast optical pulses has a promising potential to optically manipulate phonons in picoseconds time regime. However, its mechanism has been so far mostly based on the commonplace thermoelastic expansion in isotropic media, limiting the spectrum of potential applications. We investigate a conceptually new mechanism of photo-acoustic effect involving the structural instability, by utilizing a transition-metal dichalcogenide VTe$_2$ with the ribbon-type charge-density-wave (CDW). Ultrafast electron microscope imaging and diffraction measurements reveal the generation and propagation of unusual acoustic waves in the nanometric thin plate associated with the optically induced instantaneous charge-density-wave dissolution. Our results highlight the capability of photo-induced structural instability as a source of coherent acoustic waves.

Search for heavy neutrinos with the T2K near detector ND280

This paper reports on the search for heavy neutrinos with masses in the range $140 < M_N < 493$ MeV/c$^2$ using the off-axis near detector ND280 of the T2K experiment. These particles can be produced from kaon decays in the standard neutrino beam and then subsequently decay in ND280. The decay modes under consideration are $N \to \ell^{\pm}_α π^{\mp}$ and $N \to \ell^+_α \ell^-_β ν(\barν)$ ($α,β=e,μ$). A search for such events has been made using the Time Projection Chambers of ND280, where the background has been reduced to less than two events in the current dataset in all channels. No excess has been observed in the signal region. A combined Bayesian statistical approach has been applied to extract upper limits on the mixing elements of heavy neutrinos to electron-, muon- and tau- flavoured currents ($U_e^2$, $U_μ^2$, $U_τ^2$) as a function of the heavy neutrino mass, e.g. $U_e^2 < 10^{-9}$ at $90\%$ C.L. for a mass of $390$ MeV/c$^2$. These constraints are competitive with previous experiments.

Simultaneous measurement of the muon neutrino charged-current cross section on oxygen and carbon without pions in the final state at T2K

This paper reports the first simultaneous measurement of the double differential muon neutrino charged-current cross section on oxygen and carbon without pions in the final state as a function of the outgoing muon kinematics, made at the ND280 off-axis near detector of the T2K experiment. The ratio of the oxygen and carbon cross sections is also provided to help validate various models' ability to extrapolate between carbon and oxygen nuclear targets, as is required in T2K oscillation analyses. The data are taken using a neutrino beam with an energy spectrum peaked at 0.6 GeV. The extracted measurement is compared with the prediction from different Monte Carlo neutrino-nucleus interaction event generators, showing particular model separation for very forward-going muons. Overall, of the models tested, the result is best described using Local Fermi Gas descriptions of the nuclear ground state with RPA suppression.

Suppressing dynamical diffraction artefacts in differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy of long-range electromagnetic fields via precession

In differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (DPC-STEM), variability in dynamical diffraction resulting from changes in sample thickness and local crystal orientation (due to sample bending) can produce contrast comparable to that arising from the long-range electromagnetic fields probed by this technique. Through simulation we explore the scale of these dynamical diffraction artefacts and introduce a metric for the magnitude of their confounding contribution to the contrast. We show that precession over an angular range of a few milliradian can suppress this confounding contrast by one-to-two orders of magnitude. Our exploration centres around a case study of GaAs near the [011] zone-axis orientation using a probe-forming aperture semiangle on the order of 0.1 mrad at 300 keV, but the trends found and methodology used are expected to apply more generally.

T2K measurements of muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance using $3.13\times 10^{21}$ protons on target

We report measurements by the T2K experiment of the parameters $θ_{23}$ and $Δm^2_{32}$ which govern the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos in the three-flavor PMNS neutrino oscillation model at T2K's neutrino energy and propagation distance. Utilizing the ability of the experiment to run with either a mainly neutrino or a mainly antineutrino beam, muon-like events from each beam mode are used to measure these parameters separately for neutrino and antineutrino oscillations. Data taken from $1.49 \times 10^{21}$ protons on target (POT) in neutrino mode and $1.64 \times 10^{21}$ POT in antineutrino mode are used. The best-fit values obtained by T2K were $\sin^2\left(θ_{23}\right)=0.51^{+0.06}_{-0.07} \left(0.43^{+0.21}_{-0.05}\right)$ and $Δm^2_{32}=2.47^{+0.08}_{-0.09} \left(2.50^{+0.18}_{-0.13}\right)$\evmass for neutrinos (antineutrinos). No significant differences between the values of the parameters describing the disappearance of muon neutrinos and antineutrinos were observed. An analysis using an effective two-flavor neutrino oscillation model where the sine of the mixing angle is allowed to take non-physical values larger than 1 is also performed to check the consistency of our data with the three-flavor model. Our data were found to be consistent with a physical value for the mixing angle.

$ωN$ scattering length from $ω$ photoproduction on the proton near the threshold

Photoproduction of the $ω$ meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{ωp}$ and effective range $r_{ωp}$ between the $ω$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{ωp} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{ωp}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{ωp}$ and $r_{ωp}$ are determined separately for the first time. A small $P$-wave contribution does not affect the obtained values.

First Measurement of the Charged Current $\overlineν_μ$ Double Differential Cross Section on a Water Target without Pions in the final state

This paper reports the first differential measurement of the charged-current $\overlineν_μ$ interaction cross section on water with no pions in the final state. The unfolded flux-averaged measurement using the T2K off-axis near detector is given in double differential bins of $μ^+$ momentum and angle. The integrated cross section in a restricted phase space is $σ=\left(1.11\pm0.18\right)\times10^{-38}$ cm$^{2}$ per water molecule. Comparisons with several nuclear models are also presented.

Measurement of neutrino and antineutrino neutral-current quasielastic-like interactions on oxygen by detecting nuclear de-excitation $γ$-rays

Neutrino- and antineutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic-like interactions are measured at Super-Kamiokande using nuclear de-excitation $γ$-rays to identify signal-like interactions in data from a $14.94 \ (16.35)\times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target exposure of the T2K neutrino (antineutrino) beam. The measured flux-averaged cross sections on oxygen nuclei are $\langle σ_{ν{\rm -NCQE}} \rangle = 1.70 \pm 0.17 ({\rm stat.}) ^{+ {\rm 0.51}}_{- {\rm 0.38}} ({\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-38} \ {\rm cm^2/oxygen}$ with a flux-averaged energy of 0.82 GeV and $\langle σ_{\barν {\rm -NCQE}} \rangle = 0.98 \pm 0.16 ({\rm stat.}) ^{+ {\rm 0.26}}_{- {\rm 0.19}} ({\rm syst.}) \times 10^{-38} \ {\rm cm^2/oxygen}$ with a flux-averaged energy of 0.68 GeV, for neutrinos and antineutrinos, respectively. These results are the most precise to date, and the antineutrino result is the first cross section measurement of this channel. They are compared with various theoretical predictions. The impact on evaluation of backgrounds to searches for supernova relic neutrinos at present and future water Cherenkov detectors is also discussed.

Measurement of the muon neutrino charged-current single $π^+$ production on hydrocarbon using the T2K off-axis near detector ND280

We report the measurements of single and double differential cross section of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on carbon with a single positively charged pion in the final state at the T2K off-axis near detector using $5.56\times10^{20}$ protons on target. The analysis uses data control samples for the background subtraction and the cross section signal, defined as a single negatively charged muon and a single positively charged pion exiting from the target nucleus, is extracted using an unfolding method. The model dependent cross section, integrated over the T2K off-axis neutrino beam spectrum peaking at $0.6$~GeV, is measured to be $σ= (11.76 \pm 0.44 \text{(stat)} \pm 2.39 \text{(syst)}) \times 10^{-40} \text{cm}^2$~$\text{nucleon}^{-1}$. Various differential cross sections are measured, including the first measurement of the Adler angles for single charged pion production in neutrino interactions with heavy nuclei target.

Search for Electron Antineutrino Appearance in a Long-baseline Muon Antineutrino Beam

Electron antineutrino appearance is measured by the T2K experiment in an accelerator-produced antineutrino beam, using additional neutrino beam operation to constrain parameters of the PMNS mixing matrix. T2K observes 15 candidate electron antineutrino events with a background expectation of 9.3 events. Including information from the kinematic distribution of observed events, the hypothesis of no electron antineutrino appearance is disfavored with a significance of 2.40σ and no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions is found. A complementary analysis that introduces an additional free parameter which allows non-PMNS values of electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance also finds no discrepancy between data and PMNS predictions.

An event mixing technique for Bose-Einstein correlations of two pions in photoproduction around 1 GeV

We have developed an event mixing technique to observe Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between two identical neutral pions produced in photo-induced reactions in the non-perturbative QCD energy region. It is found that the missing-mass consistency cut and the pion-energy cut are essential for the event mixing method to effectively extract BEC observables. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used to validate these constraints and confirms the efficiency of this method. Our work paves the way for similar BEC studies at lower energies where the multiplicity of emitted bosons is limited.

Direct observation of the lattice dynamics of transition metals using ultrafast electron diffraction

We report the lattice dynamics of transition metal thin films by using the ultrafast electron diffraction. We observe a suppression of the diffraction intensity in a few picosecond after the photoexcitation, which is directly interpreted as the lattice heating via the electron-phonon interaction. The electron-phonon coupling constants for Au, Cu and Mo are quantitatively evaluated by employing the two-temperature model, which are consistent with those obtained by optical pump-probe methods. The variation in the lattice dynamics of the transition metals are systematically explained by the strength of the electron-phonon coupling, arising from the elemental dependence of the electronic structure and atomic mass.

Momentum-dependent sign-inversion of orbital polarization in superconducting FeSe

We investigate the electronic reconstruction across the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition in FeSe by employing polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on detwinned single crystals. Across the structural transition, the electronic structures around the G and M points are modified from four-fold to two-fold symmetry due to the lifting of degeneracy in dxz/dyz orbitals. The dxz band shifts upward at the G point while it moves downward at the M point, suggesting that the electronic structure of orthorhombic FeSe is characterized by a momentum-dependent sign-changing orbital polarization. The elongated directions of the elliptical Fermi surfaces (FSs) at the G and M points are rotated by 90 degrees with respect to each other, which may be related to the absence of the antiferromagnetic order in FeSe.

Orbital anisotropy underlying the superconducting dome in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ superconductors

We investigate the in-plane anisotropy of Fe 3d orbitals occurring in a wide temperature and composition range of BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 system. By employing the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the lifting of degeneracy in dxz and dyz orbitals at the Brillouin zone corners can be obtained as a measure of the orbital anisotropy. In the underdoped regime, it starts to evolve on cooling from high temperatures above both antiferromagnetic and orthorhombic transitions. With increasing x, it well survives into the superconducting regime, but gradually gets suppressed and finally disappears around the non-superconducting transition (x = 0.7). The observed spontaneous in-plane orbital anisotropy, possibly coupled with anisotropic lattice and magnetic fluctuations, implies the rotational-symmetry broken electronic state working as the stage for the superconductivity in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2.

Lifting of xz/yz orbital degeneracy at the structural transition in detwinned FeSe

We study superconducting FeSe (Tc = 9 K) exhibiting the tetragonal-orthorhombic structural transition (Ts = 90 K) without any antiferromagnetic ordering, by utilizing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. In the detwinned orthorhombic state, the energy position of the dyz orbital band at the Brillouin zone corner is 50 meV higher than that of dxz, indicating the orbital order similar to NaFeAs and BaFe2As2 families. Evidence of orbital order also appears in the hole bands at the Brillouin zone center. Precisely measured temperature dependence using strain-free samples shows that the onset of the orbital ordering (To) occurs very close to Ts, thus suggesting that the electronic nematicity above Ts is considerably weaker in FeSe compared to BaFe2As2 family.

Low temperature limit of lattice QCD

We study the low temperature limit of lattice QCD by using a reduction formula for a fermion determinant. The reduction formula, which is useful in finite density lattice QCD simulations, contains a reduced matrix defined as the product of $N_t$ block-matrices. It is shown that eigenvalues of the reduced matrix follows a scaling law with regard to the temporal lattice size $N_t$. The $N_t$ scaling law leads to two types of expressions of the fermion determinant in the low temperature limit; one is for small quark chemical potentials, and the other is for larger quark chemical potentials.

Gluon propagators and center vortices in gluon plasma

We study electric and magnetic components of the gluon propagators in quark-gluon plasma in terms of center vortices by using a quenched simulation of SU(2) lattice theory. In the Landau gauge, the magnetic components of the propagators are strongly affected in the infrared region by removal of the center vortices, while the electric components are almost unchanged by this procedure. In the Coulomb gauge, the time-time correlators, including an instantaneous interaction, also have an essential contribution from the center vortices. As a result, one finds that magnetic degrees of freedom in the infrared region couple strongly to the center vortices in the deconfinement phase.

Quantum entanglement in SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills theory at zero and finite temperatures

We examine the entanglement properties of the Yang-Mills theory by calculating $α$ entanglement entropy with $α=2$ using a SU(3) quenched lattice gauge simulation both in the confinement and the deconfinement phases. In the confinement phase, the derivative of the $α$ entropy with respect to the size $l$ of the subregion, whose entanglement properties are interested in, scales as $1/l^3$, and a clear discontinuity cannot be found within our statistical errors. The $α$ entropy in the deconfinement phase saturates at large $l$. The saturation value is comparable with the thermal entropy of the pure Yang-Mills theory, indicating that the $α$ entropy obeys the volume law at large $l$ in the deconfinement phase.

Scaling study of the gluon propagator in Coulomb gauge QCD on isotropic and anisotropic lattices

We calculate the transverse and time-time components of the instantaneous gluon propagator in Coulomb gauge QCD by using an SU(3) quenched lattice simulation on isotropic and anisotropic lattices. We find that the gluon propagators suffer from strong discretization effects on the isotropic lattice; on the other hand, those on the anisotropic lattices give a better scaling. Moreover, on these two type of lattices the transverse parts are significantly suppressed in the infrared region and have a turnover at about 500 [MeV]. The high resolution to the temporal direction due to the anisotropy yields small discretization errors for the time-time gluon propagators, which also show an infrared enhancement as expected in the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario.

Spectral sum for the color-Coulomb potential in SU(3) Coulomb gauge lattice Yang-Mills theory

We discuss the essential role of the low-lying eigenmodes of the Faddeev-Popov (FP) ghost operator on the confining color-Coulomb potential using SU(3) quenched lattice simulations in the Coulomb gauge. The color-Coulomb potential is expressed as a spectral sum of the FP ghost operator and has been explored by partially summing the FP eigenmodes. We take into account the Gribov copy effects that have a great impact on the FP eigenvalues and the color-Coulomb potential. We observe that the lowest eigenvalue vanishes in the thermodynamic limit much faster than that in the Landau gauge. The color-Coulomb potential at large distances is governed by the near-zero FP eigenmodes; in particular, the lowest one accounts for a substantial portion of the color-Coulomb string tension comparable to the Wilson string tension.

preprint2009arXiv

Entanglement entropy of SU(3) Yang-Mills theory

We calculate the entanglement entropy using a SU(3) quenched lattice gauge simulation. We find that the entanglement entropy scales as $1/l^2$ at small $l$ as in the conformal field theory. Here $l$ is the size of the system, whose degrees of freedom is left after the other part are traced out. The derivative of the entanglement entropy with respect to $l$ hits zero at about $l^{\ast} = 0.6 \sim 0.7$ [fm] and vanishes above the length. It may imply that the Yang-Mills theory has the mass gap of the order of $1/l^{\ast}$. Within our statistical errors, no discontinuous change can be seen in the entanglement entropy. We discuss also a subtle point appearing in gauge systems when we divide a system with cuts.

Color confinement in Coulomb gauge QCD

We study the long-range behavior of the heavy quark potential in Coulomb gauge using a quenched SU(3) lattice gauge simulation with partial-length Polyakov line correlators. We show that the Coulomb heavy quark potential associated with the instantaneous part of gluon propagators in Coulomb gauge, presents a linearly rising behavior at large distances, and the resulting Coulomb string tension is greater than the Wilson loop string tension, which can be explained by Zwanziger's inequality. The linearly rising behavior of the Coulomb heavy quark potential persists even in the deconfinement phase. The heavy quark potential in Lorentz gauge shows completely different behavior than that in Coulomb gauge. Our SU(3) result, i.e., the Coulomb heavy quark potential is confining, qualitatively agrees with that of the SU(2) analysis carried out by Greensite, Olejnik and Zwanziger.

Properties of hadron screening masses at small baryonic density

The properties of hadron screening masses around the deconfinement phase transition at finite baryonic density can be studied by evaluating the Taylor coefficients with respect to the iso-scalar and iso-vector chemical potentials. We simulate 2-flavour lattice QCD with staggered fermions on a 12*12*24*6 lattice with ma = 0.05 and 0.10 and report investigations of nucleon, pseudo-scalar and vector mesons. We present new, strong evidence that in the confining phase, the screening masses at vanishing chemical potential have significant temperature dependence, but the effect of the iso-scalar chemical potential is very small. Above the critical temperature, the second derivative terms of mesons rapidly increase as contrasted to the case of baryon. We also study the responses of the screening masses to an iso-vector chemical potential and discuss some of the issues related to the properties of hadron masses at finite density.

Viscosities of Hot Gluon -- A Lattice QCD Study --

We present transport coefficients (shear viscosity, $η$, and bulk viscosity, $ζ$) for the gluon system obtained by the lattice QCD. This is an indispensable calculation towards the understanding of ``New State of Matter'' observed in RHIC. We study the temperature regions of RHIC ($1.4 \leq T/T_c \leq 1.8$) and much higher ones up to $ T/T_c \sim 20$. In RHIC regions, the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density, $η/s$, is around $\sim 0.1-0.4$, and satisfies the KSS bound. At high temperature, $η$ becomes two or three oder of magnitude larger. Our calculation has two limitations: (i) the use of the quench approximation, i.e., without quark pair creation-annihilation effects on vacuum, and (ii) the use of an ansatz for the spectral function. The first point has been well studied in calculations of the spectroscopy and the phase-transition behavior. To investigate the second point, we compare our results with perturbative calculations in high $T$-regions, and also check the effects of the modification of the spectral function on the viscosity.

Approximate ground state of a confined Coulomb anyon gas in an external magnetic field

We derive an analytic, albeit approximate, expression for the ground state energy of N Coulomb interacting anyons with fractional statistics nu, 0<= |nu| <= 1, confined in a two-dimensional well (with characteristic frequency omega_0 ) and subjected to an external magnetic field (with cyclotron frequency omega_c ). We apply a variational principle combined with a regularization procedure which consists of fitting a cut-off parameter to existing exact analytical results in the non-interacting case, and to numerical calculations for electrons in quantum dots in the interacting case. The resulting expression depends upon parameters of the system |nu|, N, omega_0, r_0, a_B and omega_c, where r_0 represents a characteristic unit length and a_B the Bohr radius. Validity of the result is critically assessed by comparison with exact, approximate, and numerical results from the literature.

Quenched charmonium spectrum

We study charmonium using the standard relativistic formalism in the quenched approximation, on a set of lattices with isotropic lattice spacings ranging from 0.1 to 0.04 fm. We concentrate on the calculation of the hyperfine splitting between eta_c and J/psi, aiming for a controlled continuum extrapolation of this quantity. The splitting extracted from the non-perturbatively improved clover Dirac operator shows very little dependence on the lattice spacing for $a \leq 0.1$ fm. The dependence is much stronger for Wilson and tree-level improved clover operators, but they still yield consistent extrapolations if sufficiently fine lattices, $a \leq 0.07$ fm ($a M(η_c) \leq 1$), are used. Our result for the hyperfine splitting is 77(2)(6) MeV (where Sommer's parameter, r_0, is used to fix the scale). This value remains about 30% below experiment. Dynamical fermions and OZI-forbidden diagrams both contribute to the remainder. Results for the eta_c and J/psi wave functions are also presented.

Renormalization group flow of SU(3) lattice gauge theory - Numerical studies in a two coupling space

We investigate the renormalization group (RG) flow of SU(3) lattice gauge theory in a two coupling space with couplings $β_{11}$ and $β_{12}$ corresponding to $1\times 1$ and $1\times 2$ loops respectively. Extensive numerical calculations of the RG flow are made in the fourth quadrant of this coupling space, i.e., $β_{11}>0$ and $β_{12}<0$. Swendsen's factor two blocking and the Schwinger-Dyson method are used to find an effective action for the blocked gauge field. The resulting renormalization group flow runs quickly towards an attractive stream which has an approximate line shape. This is numerical evidence of a renormalized trajectory which locates close to the two coupling space. A model flow equation which incorporates a marginal coupling (asymptotic scaling term), an irrelevant coupling and a non-perturbative attraction towards the strong coupling limit reproduces qualitatively the observed features. We further examine the scaling properties of an action which is closer to the attractive stream than the currently used improved actions. It is found that this action shows excellent restoration of rotational symmetry even for coarse lattices with $a \sim 0.3$ fm.

Responses of quark condensates to the chemical potential

The responses of quark condensates to the chemical potential, as a function of temperature T and chemical potential μ, are calculated within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. We compare our results with those from the recent lattice QCD simulations [QCD-TARO Collaboration, Nucl. Phys. B (Proc. Suppl.) 106, 462 (2002)]. The NJL model and lattice calculations show qualitatively similar behavior, and they will be complimentary ways to study hadrons at finite density. The behavior above T_c requires more elaborated analyses.

Screening mass responses to the chemical potential at finite temperature

On a $16 \times 8^2 \times \4$ lattice with two flavors of staggered quarks the first and second responses below and above $T_c$ are evaluated. Different behavior in the low and the high temperature phases are observed, which may be explained as a consequence of the chiral symmetry breaking and restoration.

Observation of anomalous single-magnon scattering in half-metallic ferromagnets by chemical pressure control

Temperature variation of resistivity and specific heat have been measured for prototypical half-metallic ferromagnets, R_0.6Sr_0.4MnO_3, with controlling the one-electron bandwidth W. We have found variation of the temperature scalings in the resistivity from T^2 (R = La, and Nd) to T^3 (R = Sm), and have interpreted the $T^3-law in terms of the anomalous single-magnon scattering (AMS) process in the half-metallic system.

Optical spectra measured on cleaved surfaces of double-exchange ferromagnet La1-xSrxMnO3

Optical reflectivity spectra were measured on cleaved surfaces of La1-xSrxMnO3 single crystals (x=0.175, T_C=283 K) over a temperature range 10-295 K. The optical conductivity $sigma(ω)$ shows, keeping single-component nature, incoherent-to-coherent crossover with increase of electrical conductivity. The $σ(ω)$ spectrum of low-temperature ferromagnetic-metallic phase (10 K) exhibits a pronounced Drude-like component with large spectral weight, contrary to the previous result. The present result indicates that the optical spectrum of the manganites is sensitive to condition of sample surfaces.

Recent topics of infrared effective lattice QCD

Three topics concerning infrared effective lattice QCD are discussed. (1)Perfect lattice action of infrared SU(3) QCD and perfect operators for the static potential are analytically given when we assume two-point monopole interactions alone. The assumption seems to be justified from numerical analyses of pure SU(3) QCD in maximally abelian gauge. (2)Gauge invariance of monopole dominance can be proved theoretically if the gauge invariance of abelian dominance is proved. The gauge invariance of monopole condensation leads us to confinement of abelian neutral but color octet states after abelian projection. (3)A stochastic gauge fixing method is developed to study the gauge dependence of the Abelian projection, which interpolates between the maximally abelian (MA) gauge and no gauge fixing. Abelian dominance for the heavy quark potential holds even in the gauge which is far from Maximally Abelian one.

Gluon Propagators and Confinement

We present SU(3) gluon propagators calculated on 48*48*48*N_t lattices at beta=6.8 where N_t=64 (corresponding the confinement phase) and N_t=16 (deconfinement) with the bare gauge parameter, alpha, set to be 0.1. In order to avoid Gribov copies, we employ the stochastic gauge fixing algorithm. Gluon propagators show quite different behavior from those of massless gauge fields: (1) In the confinement phase, G(t) shows massless behavior at small and large t, while around 5<t<15 it behaves as massive particle, and (2) effective mass observed in G(z) becomes larger as z increases. (3) In the deconfinement phase, G(z) shows also massive behavior but effective mass is less than in the confinement case. In all cases, slope masses are increasing functions of t or z, which can not be understood as addtional physical poles.

Scaling Study of Pure Gauge Lattice QCD by Monte Carlo Renormalization Group Method

The scaling behavior of pure gauge SU(3) in the region $β=5.85 - 7.60$ is examined by a Monte Carlo Renormalization Group analysis. The coupling shifts induced by factor 2 blocking are measured both on 32$^4$ and 16$^4$ lattices with high statistics. A systematic deviation from naive 2-loop scaling is clearly seen. The mean field and effective coupling constant schemes explain part, but not all of the deviation. It can be accounted for by a suitable change of coupling constant, including a correction term ${\cal O}(g^7)$ in the 2-loop lattice $β$-function. Based on this improvement, $\sqrtσ/Λ_{\overline {MS}}^{n_f=0}$ is estimated to be $2.2(\pm 0.1)$ from the analysis of the string tension $σ$.
