Effect of pairing fluctuations on the spin resonance in Fe-based superconductors

The spin resonance observed in the inelastic neutron scattering data on Fe-based superconductors has played a prominent role in the quest for determining the symmetry of the order parameter in these compounds. Most theoretical studies of the resonance employ an RPA-type approach in the particle-hole channel and associate the resonance in the spin susceptibility $χ_S (\mathbf{q}, ω)$ at momentum ${\bf Q} = (π,π)$ with the spin-exciton of an $s^{+-}$ superconductor, pulled below $2Δ$ by residual attraction associated with the sign change of the gap between Fermi points connected by ${\bf Q}$. Here we explore the effect of fluctuations in the particle-particle channel on the spin resonance. Particle-particle and particle-hole channels are coupled in a superconductor and to what extent the spin resonance can be viewed as a particle-hole exciton needs to be addressed. In the case of purely repulsive interactions we find that the particle-particle channel at total momentum ${\bf Q}$ (the $π$channel) contributes little to the resonance. However, if the interband density-density interaction is attractive and the $π-$resonance is possible on its own, along with the spin-exciton, we find a much stronger shift of the resonance frequency from the position of the would-be spin-exciton resonance. We also show that the expected double-peak structure in this situation does not appear because of the strong coupling between particle-hole and particle-particle channels, and $\mathrm{Im} χ_S ({\bf Q}, ω)$ displays only a single peak.

Quasiparticle interaction function in a 2D Fermi liquid near an antiferromagnetic critical point

We present the expression for the quasiparticle vertex function $Γ^{ω}(K_{F},P_{F})$ (proportional to the Landau function) in a 2D Fermi liquid (FL) near a $T=0$ instability towards antiferromagnetism. Previous studies have found that near an instability, the system enters into a critical FL regime, in which the fermionic self-energy is large near hot spots (points on the Fermi surface connected by the antiferromagnetic ordering vector $q_π=(π,π)$) and has much stronger dependence on frequency than on momentum. We show that to properly calculate the vertex function in this regime one has to sum up an infinite series of terms which were explicitly excluded in the conventional treatment. Besides, we show that, to properly describe the spin component of $Γ^{ω}(K_{F},P_{F})$ even in an ordinary FL, one has to include Aslamazov-Larkin terms. We show that the total $Γ^{ω}(K_{F},P_{F})$ is larger in a critical FL than in an ordinary FL, roughly by an extra power of magnetic correlation length $ξ$. However, the enhancement of $Γ^{ω}(K_{F},P_{F})$ is highly non-uniform: It holds only when, for one of the two momentum variables, the distance from a hot spot along the Fermi surface is much larger than for the other one. We show that the charge and spin components of the total vertex function satisfy the universal relations following from the Ward identities related to the conservation of the particle number and the total spin. We find that the charge and spin components of $Γ^{ω}(K_{F},P_{F})$ are identical to leading order in the magnetic correlation length. We derive the Landau parameters, the density of states $N_F$, and the uniform ($q=0$) charge and spin susceptibilities $χ^{l=0}_{c} = χ^{l=0}_s$. We show that the susceptibilities remain finite at $ξ= \infty$ despite that $N_F$ diverges as $\log ξ$.
