Epitaxy enhancement in oxide/tungsten heterostructures by harnessing the interface adhesion

The conditions whereby epitaxy is achieved are commonly believed to be mostly governed by misfit strain. We report on a systematic investigation of growth and interface structure of single crystalline tungsten thin films on two different metal oxide substrates, Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ ($11\bar{2}0$) and MgO ($001$). We demonstrate that despite a significant mismatch, enhanced crystal quality is observed for tungsten grown on the sapphire substrates. This is promoted by stronger adhesion and chemical bonding with sapphire compared to magnesium oxide, along with the restructuring of the tungsten layers close to the interface. The latter is supported by ab initio calculations using density functional theory. Finally, we demonstrate the growth of magnetic heterostructures consisting of high-quality tungsten layers in combination with ferromagnetic CoFe layers, which are relevant for spintronic applications.

Co$_2$FeAl full Heusler compound based spintronic terahertz emitter

To achieve a large terahertz (THz) amplitude from a spintronic THz emitter (STE), materials with 100\% spin polarisation such as Co-based Heusler compounds as the ferromagnetic layer are required. However, these compounds are known to loose their half-metallicity in the ultrathin film regime, as it is difficult to achieve L2$_1$ ordering, which has become a bottleneck for the film growth. Here, the successful deposition using room temperature DC sputtering of the L2$_1$ and B2 ordered phases of the Co$_2$FeAl full Heusler compound is reported. Co$_2$FeAl is used as ferromagnetic layer together with highly orientated Pt as non-ferromagnetic layer in the Co$_2$FeAl/Pt STE, where an MgO(10 nm) seed layer plays an important role to achieve the L2$_1$ and B2 ordering of Co$_2$FeAl. The generation of THz radiation in the CFA/Pt STE is presented, which has a bandwidth in the range of 0.1-4 THz. The THz electric field amplitude is optimized with respect to thickness, orientation, and growth parameters using a thickness dependent model considering the optically induced spin current, superdiffusive spin current, inverse spin Hall effect and the attenuation of THz radiation in the layers. This study, based on the full Heusler Co$_2$FeAl compound opens up a plethora possibilities in STE research involving full Heusler compounds.

Evolution of Griffiths Phase and Critical Behaviour of La1-xPbxMnO3+-y Solid Solutions

Polycrystalline La1-xPbxMnO3+-y (x = 0.3, 0.35, 0.4) solid solutions were prepared by solid state reaction method and their magnetic properties have been investigated. Rietveld refinement of X-ray powder diffraction patterns showed that all samples are single phase and crystallized with the rhombohedral structure in the R-3c space group. A second order paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phase transition was observed for all materials. The Griffiths phase (GP), identified from the temperature dependence of the inverse susceptibility, was suppressed by increasing magnetic field and showed a significant dependence on A-site chemical substitution. The critical behaviour of the compounds was investigated near to their Curie temperatures, using intrinsic magnetic field data. The critical exponents (\b{eta}, γ and δ) are close to the mean-field approximation values for all three compounds. The observed mean-field like behaviour is a consequence of the GP and the formation of ferromagnetic clusters. Long-range ferromagnetic order is established as the result of long-range interactions between ferromagnetic clusters. The magnetocaloric effect was studied in terms of the isothermal entropy change. Our study shows that the material with the lowest chemical substitution (x = 0.3) has the highest potential (among the three compounds) as magnetic refrigerant, owing to its higher relative cooling power (258 J/kg at 5 T field) and a magnetic phase transition near room temperature.

Engineering of spin mixing conductance in Ru/FeCo/Ru interfaces: Effect of Re Doping

We have deposited polycrystalline Re doped $(Fe_{65}Co_{35})_{100-x}Re_{x}$ (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 12.6 at\%) thin films grown under identical conditions and sandwiched between thin layers of Ru in order to study the phenomenon of spin pumping as a function of Re concentration. In-plane and out-of-plane ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy results show an enhancement of the Gilbert damping with an increase in Re doping. We found evidence of an increase in the real part of effective spin mixing conductance [Re($g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{eff}$)] with the increase in Re doping of 6.6 at\%, while a decrease is evident at higher Re doping. The increase in Re($g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{eff}$) can be linked to the Re doping induced change of the interface electronic structure in the non-magnetic Ru layer and the effect interfacial spin-orbit coupling has on the effective spin-mixing conductance. The lowest and highest values of Re($g^{\uparrow\downarrow}_{eff}$) are found to be 9.883(02) $nm^{-2}$ and 19.697(02) $nm^{-2}$ for 0 at\% and 6.6 at\% Re doping, respectively. The saturation magnetization decreases with increasing Re doping, from 2.362(13) T for the undoped film to 1.740(03) T for 12.6 at\% Re doping. This study opens a new direction of tuning the spin-mixing conductance in magnetic heterostructures by doping of the ferromagnetic layerr, which is essential for the realization of energy efficient operation of spintronic devices.

Spin pumping and spin torque in interfacial tailored Co2FeAl/\b{eta}-Ta layers

The Heusler ferromagnetic (FM) compound Co2FeAl interfaced with a high-spin orbit coupling non-magnetic (NM) layer is a promising candidate for energy efficient spin logic circuits. The circuit potential depends on the strength of angular momentum transfer across the FM/NM interface; hence, requiring low spin memory loss and high spin-mixing conductance. To highlight this issue, spin pumping and spin-transfer torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements have been performed on Co_2FeAl/β-Ta heterostructures tailored with Cu interfacial layers. The interface tailored structure yields an enhancement of the effective spin-mixing conductance. The interface transparency and spin memory loss corrected values of the spin-mixing conductance, spin Hall angle and spin diffusion length are found to be 3.40 \pm 0.01 \times 10^{19} m^{-2}, 0.029 \pm 0.003, and 2.3 \pm 0.5 nm, respectively. Furthermore, a high current modulation of the effective damping of around 2.1 % has been achieved at an applied current density of 1 \times 10^9 A/m^2 , which clearly indicates the potential of using this heterostructure for energy efficient control in spin devices

Non-Reciprocal Spin Pumping in Asymmetric Magnetic Trilayers

In magnetic trilayer systems, spin pumping is generally addressed as a reciprocal mechanism characterized by one unique spin mixing conductance common to both interfaces. However, this assumption is questionable in cases where different types of interfaces are present in the material. Here, we present a general theory for analyzing spin pumping in cases with more than one unique interface. The theory is applied to analyze layer-resolved ferromagnetic resonance experiments on the trilayer system Ni$_{20}$Fe$_{80}$/Ru/Fe$_{49}$Co$_{49}$V$_2$ where the Ru spacer thickness is varied to tune the indirect exchange coupling. The results show that the spin pumping in trilayer systems with dissimilar magnetic layers is non-reciprocal, with a surprisingly large difference between spin-pumping induced damping of different interfaces. Our findings have importance on dynamics of spintronic devices based on magnetic multilayer materials.

Interface characterization of Co2MnGe/Rh2CuSn Heusler multilayers

All-Heusler multilayer structures have been investigated by means of high kinetic x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, aiming to address the amount of disorder and interface diffusion induced by annealing of the multilayer structure. The studied multilayers consist of ferromagnetic Co$_2$MnGe and non-magnetic Rh$_2$CuSn layers with varying thicknesses. We find that diffusion begins already at comparably low temperatures between 200 $^{\circ}$C and 250 $^{\circ}$C, where Mn appears to be most prone to diffusion. We also find evidence for a 4 Å thick magnetically dead layer that, together with the identified interlayer diffusion, are likely reasons for the small magnetoresistance found for current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magneto-resistance devices based on this all-Heusler system.

Photoinduced reduction of surface states in Fe:ZnO

Transition metal doping is known to increase the photosensitivity to visible light for photocatalytically active ZnO. We report on the electronic structure of nano-crystalline Fe:ZnO, which has recently been shown to be an efficient photocatalyst. The photo-activity of ZnO reduces Fe from 3+ to 2+ in the surface region of the nano-crystalline material. Electronic states corresponding to low-spin Fe 2+ are observed and attributed to crystal field modification at the surface. These states can be important for the photocatalytic sensitivity to visible light due to their deep location in the ZnO bandgap. X-ray absorption and x-ray photoemission spectroscopy suggest that Fe is only homogeneously distributed for concentrations up to 3%. Increased concentrations does not result in a higher concentration of Fe ions in the surface region. This is a crucial factor limiting the photocatalytic functionality of ZnO, where the most efficient doping concentration have been shown to be 2-4% for Fe doping. Using resonant photoemission spectroscopy we determine the location of Fe 3d states with sensitivity to the charge states of the Fe ion even for multi-valent and multi-coordinated Fe.

The anti-ordinary Hall effect in NiPt thin films

We study the anomalous Hall effect in binary alloys between the group-10 elements Ni and Pt. It is observed that the ordinary Hall effect is negative (electron-like) at any composition of the alloy. The extraordinary Hall effect is also negative except in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic quantum critical point. Close to the critical point the sign of the extraordinary Hall effect can be changed to positive (hole-like) by tuning either the temperature or the composition of the alloy. We attribute such an "anti-ordinary" Hall effect with opposite signs of the ordinary and the extraordinary contributions to a Berry phase singularity, moving away from the Fermi energy with increasing the ferromagnetic exchange energy.

Magnetocrystalline anisotropy and uniaxiality of MnAs/GaAs(100) films

We present an investigation of the magnetic behavior of epitaxial MnAs films grown on GaAs(100). We address the dependence of the magnetic moment, ferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_c$) and magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants on epitaxial conditions. From thorough structural and magnetic investigations, our findings indicate a more complex relationship between strain and magnetic properties in MnAs films than a simple stretch/compression of the unit cell axes. While a small increase is seen in the anisotropy constants the enhancement of the magnetic moment at saturation is significant. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism results show a behavior of the spin- and orbital-moment which is consistent with a structural transition at $T_c$. In particular, we find that the ratio of the orbital to spin moment shows a marked increase in the coexistence region of the ferromagnetic $α$- and paramagnetic $β$-phases, a result that is well in accord with the observed increase of the $c/a$-ratio in the same temperature region. The \textit{ab initio} density functional calculations reveal that the magnetic properties are more sensitive towards change in in-plane axis as compared to a change of the out-of-plane axis, which is explained by the analysis of band structures. The effects of electron correlation in MnAs using \textit{ab initio} dynamical mean field theory are also presented.

A novel wear-resistant magnetic thin film material based on a $Ti_{1-x}Fe_xC_{1-y}$ nanocomposite alloy

In this study we report on the film growth and characterization of thin (approximately 50 nm thick) Ti-Fe-C films deposited on amorphous quartz. The experimental studies have been complemented by first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Upon annealing of as-prepared films, the composition of the metastable Ti-Fe-C film changes. An iron-rich phase is first formed close to the film surface, but with increasing annealing time this phase is gradually displaced toward the film-substrate interface where its position stabilizes. Both the magnetic ordering temperature and the saturation magnetization changes significantly upon annealing. The DFT calculations show that the critical temperature and the magnetic moment both increase with increasing Fe and C-vacancy concentration. The formation of the metastable iron-rich Ti-Fe-C compound is reflected in the strong increase of the magnetic ordering temperature. Eventually, after enough annealing time ($\geq 10$ minutes), nano-crystalline $α$-Fe starts to precipitate and the amount and size of these precipitates can be controlled by the annealing procedure; after 20 minutes of annealing, the experimental results indicate a nano-crystalline iron-film embedded in a wear resistant TiC compound. This conclusion is further supported by transmission electron microscopy studies on epitaxial Ti-Fe-C films deposited on single crystalline MgO substrates where, upon annealing, an iron film embedded in TiC is formed. Our results suggest that annealing of metastable Ti-Fe-C films can be used as an efficient way of creating a wear-resistant magnetic thin film material.
